How does an electric bicycle work?

Kavi Dessa

When my dad first mentioned them to me, I though that they would work just about the same as an electric scooter. But when I actually looked it up, I saw that they still had pedals and looked almost exactly the same as any other bike. So where does the electric part come in if you're still pedaling? How does it work?

Thank you kindly.
:)

Answer
The motor is connected either thru the chain drive or is a part of the wheel (hub motor).

some models are throttle based where you push the throttle more, and more power goes to the motor (Power on Demand 'POD'), or, power can be initiated by a sensor that detects you are pedalling pretty hard, so it sends power to the motor to help out (pedelec).

On some models you must pedal, (pedalec) others you have your choice whether or not to pedal. Even moderate pedalling helps with the performance and range.

If an ebike follows the U.S. Federal law HR 727, it is legal where bikes are legal:

To be legal in most states, an e-bike must have less than 750 watts of power, pedals that really work, 2 or 3 wheels (not 4 wheels) and the motor should cut out at 20mph.

turn key ebikes can be purchased from Giant bicycle, Target online, and other places depending on your locale. there are many kit vendors; Cyclone is a chain drive, Bionx is a fancy high end hub motor, and Crystalyte is a value hub motor, along with other companies.

The motor enables people that have physical limitations to still ride and manage hills and headwinds. It also allows people to show up for work a lot less sweaty and allows an alternative to car transportation while still getting decent exercise. Prices for decent stuff starts at about $400, and goes up to almost $10K for an electric enclosed trike that can virtually replace a car. Properly chosen many better ebikes have a range of 25+ miles before having to recharge the batteries.

I am 60 years old and can bring home 40lbs of groceries on my ebike, and can use it to go most anyplace in my medium sized (500,000 population) town.

some newer ebikes are quite lightweight and bicycle like.

Ebikes increase health, decrease pollution, decrease auto traffic, save transportation dollars and consume no petroleum. REcharging takes about 4 hours and costs about 10 cents.

How much electric can I generate with a bike, and what is it worth.?

I have seen various web-sites that show that someone pedaling a bike that is hooked to a a generator can power various appliances. These web-sites say things like if you pedal for an hour you can power a laptop for three hours. Or they say that you can charge a 12 volt battery. What I want to know is the dollar value of electric that one could generate by pedaling for one hour on a bike that is hooked to some sort of electric generator. An estimate of the cost of each kilowatt hour would be fine.

Answer
Pennies. If you peddle your little heart out all day you might make enough for a cup of coffee. Think about it: Lets estimate that you can generate 100 watts per hour (which I believe is a pretty generous estimate). At $.10 (10 cents) per KwH, you will make $.10 (10 cents) for every 10 hours you peddle. Even if we increased our estimated production by ten fold (to 1,000 watts per hour) you would only make a dollar from ten hours of peddling. I think if this was a viable option for producing electricity, some joker in a 3rd world country would already have a warehouse full of people peddling away.

Can the pedaling energy charge the battery of an electric bike?

Drowzzy

Can the mechanical energy of pedaling be stored as electrical energy to be utilized later to run the bicycle automatically? I'm not talking about pure electric bikes that need regular charging, and not even about those that you pedal for a while as the bike stands still and then run it on electric power. I mean can you ride a bike and store the mechanical energy simultaneously? Will it be efficient? If so, then are such e-bikes available in the market, and what are they called so that I may Google for them?

Here's the scenario: I need a bicycle for regular commute, may be even for covering long distances. It's not feasible for a layman to pedal continuously for more than 5 to 10 miles. So I'm looking for a bike that you pedal for sometime, and when you're exhausted, you simply flick a button to make it run on electrical power which has been converted and stored from the mechanical energy of pedaling the bike; and then pedal again and auto-ride again and so forth. Will something like that be technically efficient, since you're moving the bike while pedaling as well as storing your spare energy?

Hope I haven't confused you. Thanks :)

Answer
Yes, it can!

Electric cycles are readily available. You normally charge them from a mains supply and then you can part-pedal / part-drive them on your commute. You can often adjust the amount of assistance to be supplied by the motor enabling you to go faster but less far or vice versa. If you want to pedal the bike and store 50% (say) of your energy for later you can do so but you will be doing double the work when pedalling, so your commute will be, so to say, twice as hard or half as fast and take twice as long. That doesn't seem to make much sense, especially since electric cycles are heavy and pedalling them (with no motor assistance) even without any of your energy going to storage, will be quite slow and tediously tough.

What an electric cycle does do is re-charge the batteries when you go downhill giving you back at least a good fraction of the energy expended in climbing up. But that produces a braking effect and the speed of descent is reduced. What inevitably goes lost is the energy taken by friction and wind resistance. Storing and using later is also subject to a degree of loss.

In short, if you don't want to use a commercial energy source to "fuel" your bicycle, get a conventional one - you'll do vastly better.

what is stopping people from just replacing a gas engine with an electric engine?

Q. What is stopping people from just replacing a gas engine with an electric engine. I know a little bit about cars but not enough to know this answer. What makes an engine go from 8000 rpm or so down back to like 1 or 2 thousand rpm when you shift gears. Could you do the same thing with an electric engine?
Where would i be able to look at find motors with the type of power a car would call for?

Answer
If you want the equivalent of a golf cart, there are companies that will make the conversion for you. It will cost you thousands of dollars and you won't be able to go from L.A. to Anaheim on a charge.

The biggest barrier is batteries.

Gasoline has an energy density of about 46.19 Newton-Meters per kilogram (energy units per unit of weight).

A lead acid battery (the cheapest kind) comes in at 0.11 NM/Kg. That means it takes more than 400 times as much lead-acid battery to get as much energy as the same weight of gas.

The next generation of battery, the nickel-metal-hydride (NMh) they use in most hybrids, has a better energy density, but it's still only twice as dense as a lead acid, or 200 times more weight for the same energy as gasoline. On an energy per cubic centimeter basis, it's a lot better, but still takes 100 times as much space per unit of energy.

The newest batteries, used in laptops and the all-electric Tesla sports car, are lithium-ion. An experimental Japanese sedan, the Eliica, with eight wheel motors and lithium-ion batteries ran 230 mph a few years ago, but it cost a fortune, and we haven't heard from it since. These batteries have an energy density by weight three times that of an NMh, and 5 times by volume. So gasoline is only18 times as dense by volume. Still, imagine having to find room for 18 gas tanks in your car!

As to gears, you need gears for mechanical advantage (like a lever) to allow the engine to remain in its most efficient operating range at varying speeds.

Most gas engines do their best work between about 2,400 rpms and 5,000 rpms. A high performance engine's range will be higher, but they all need gears, or else they either couldn't get going from rest (geared too high) or would run out of breath before they reached freeway speed (geared too low).

If you ever rode a ten-speed bike, you'll know that you need low gears for going up hills and high gears to keep up with the pedals going down. Same with a car.

the Tesla now has only one gear. That's because an electric motor produces its maximum torque (the force to move the car) at zero rpms (from a dead stop). If you want one, they are taking deposits. They only cost around $100,000.

BTW, if you want to avoid sounding uninformed, technically the electric unit is called a "motor" while the internal combustion one is called an "engine." It's an engineering distinction.

Which commute bicycle is best for me?

Tara

I am looking for a bicycle for a commute to work of about 8-10 miles and would consider an electric model. Can anyone offer any specific models? There is so much out there to choose from. The area where I live can be fairly hilly, so higher number of speeds would be best, and I'm wondering how often there would have to be battery replacement on an electric bike. Any help would be appreciated, preferably from personal experience, but speculation from an experienced rider would also help. Thanks.

Answer
You can get a good electric assist bicycle - for a few THOUSAND dollars. http://www.trekbikes.com/us/en/collections/electric_assist/models/ Or...you could take the initiative to get a nice entry level "performance hybrid" with the gears to pull hills under your own power. And this bike may just come factory equipped with fenders & a rear rack for under $400! You will get & stay fit. Electric assist bicycles make you fat & lazy. What if the charge in the battery runs low or out at the wrong time & in the wrong place? Then you are faced pedaling an extremely heavy bike home under your own power. See these two links...

How do I hook up a fuse holder with a fuse to a electric bike. I've searched online for methods and came up with nothing relevant. Yes, I'm probably not looking hard enough but I want to cut out the bullshit and get to the point. My idea was to connect the holder's positive to the positive lead to the battery then to the switch that turns the power on/off. I didn't wire the bike I'm modifying it to work for me. Yes, I don't know everything and don't claim to, that's were you come in. It would be helpful if you can provide an image showing how.

I cannot decide if I want to wait one more year and get a car, or convert another car to electric like I had planned to do. I am afraid that if my dad and I buy the car for conversion, he will not be as willing to put in as much money for my first real car (we have already decided that he will help pay). Which way should I go?

Answer
What do you want to achieve? How much budget do you have? What sort of driving do you do?

If most of your journeys are long distance, or high speed, then forget electric cars right now: they're not the right power source for the job. If most of your journeys are short and on slower roads, then an electric car is in its ideal environment.

If you are converting a car, you'll probably end up with a car with a range of 40-60 miles and a top speed of 55-60mph (depending, of course, on what budget you have). You will end up with something that is unique, but it will probably be fairly slow.

If most of your driving is in a built up area, then that probably isn't an issue for you. In which case, you can go the self-build route if you want an electric car. If you are using new components, then budget $3-4000 for the conversion, on top of the price of the car: more if you want the latest lithium batteries (between you and me, don't go there: they're troublesome. Stick with lead acid batteries which are a lot easier to implement for a home conversion).

If you want a more practical car, that will have great performance and a decent range, you'll have to go the purchase route. Mitsubishi will have their 'i' electric car out in the US very shortly. I've used one in Europe for a year and it is a very good car. Nissan have their LEAF electric car out now, and again that is a superb car: in Europe, it won 'European Car of the Year' award, as voted by the top automotive journalists across Europe.

I've been driving various different electric cars over the past five years, and before that ran a company selling electric bikes. I am the author of 'The 2011 Electric Car Guide'.

What sort of material can be shaped for the body of a bike?

Keir Sta

After realizing that building an ultra light weight aircraft would require time that i didn't care to spend, I decided it was maybe time to be a little more realistic. So I am now in the process of building an electric motorcycle, in the design of the "light Cycle" from the Tron movies. I've built the frame and have all the electronics.. buuut I haven't the slightest idea how to design the outer shell.

Sheet metal sounds ideal, but it DOES NOT like to be bent in multiple directions. I need a material that can be shaped without the need for an English-wheel or any other crazy machinery. Just keep in mind that it does not have to be hard or reliable, it's going to be more like a trophy than an actual drivable bike.

Oh and with this economy, lets keep the prices reasonable, okay?

Here's a picture to give you an idea about the shaping that's required.

Answer
As you are building a one-off I would recommend using the fiberglass over foam method. You carve a 3d mock up from conventional insulation foam and then laminate both sides with fiberglass. Then apply a little bondo then a gel coat over it. Unlike with carbon fiber or kevlar fiberglass does not require a pressurized mold, or any mold, and can be laid by hand. this works with any shape including compound curves. If touching resin doesn't appeal to you you might invest in a compressed air powered chopper gun. fiberglass over foam is by far the cheapest method, for something small like a motorcycle you probably wont spend more the 500 bucks for all the materials.
This is how most low budget movie props are made.

idk.idkk

i had a 180 watt, 8 amp motor and it blew a 30 amp fuse. i ordered a 1000 watt (at 36v) (745 watt at 25v) motor. it's rated current is 34 amps. what rated amp fuse should i use?

o and it's for an electric bike motor. if anyone knows: could i use a resettable breaker? if so where could i get one that can run off 24 or 36 volts dc??

thanks.

Answer
Electric motors draw a large amount of current on startup and much smaller amounts after they come up to speed. What you need is called a "slow blow fuse". Such fuses can handle up to 10 times the current they are rated to handle for a short period of time, a few seconds or less. The actual fuse rating should be specified by the manufacturer of the motor. In the absence of such a recommendation, use a fuse rated the same or slightly higher than the continuous current rating.

A properly rated circuit breaker should work in place of a fuse.

Here's a 24V resettable circuit breaker rated for 40A. This one should be suitable, since it's intended purpose is to operate a motor and the added startup current would have already been considered in the design.

How do you put a chain driven motor on a bike with suspension?

Dug

I was thinking about putting a motor on an electric motocross bike so it goes faster, the only problem is is that the motorbike has suspension in the back and I was wondering if a chain driven motor can be mounted so when I hit a bump with the suspension the chain won't pop off or become stressed.

Answer
The sprocket needs to be roughly lined up with the center-line of the swing arm and not far from the pivot point. Just a random gas engine has nearly a zero percent chance of working since the output shaft is usually centered and too high on the engine. That, and you would have to find a clutch for it, make sure the sprockets line up perfectly, and fabricate a mounting system. You would also have to make a functional gas tank unless there was one mounted to the engine.

By the time you were done, you could have sold your old bike and bought a real dirt-bike. I see older used ones for sale in my local CL for $500-1000 all the time.

How do I prevent officers from unlawfully stopping me on a scooter?

best electric assist bicycle image

dan

I was riding an electric scooter on the side of the road like a bicycle(not in traffic). An officer gave me a ticket for operating an unregistered motor vehicle. Although New Jersey law dictates that it is classified as a moped, which must be registered and insured, under federal law any two or 3 wheeled vehicle under 1hp and has a top speed of less than 20mph and functioning pedals, it's actually considered an "electronically assisted bicycle" and is regulated with the same laws as regular bicycles, not as a motor vehicle. This federal law also specifically states that this law supersedes any state law which regulates such vehicles more stringently. I plead not guilty and when I brought this to the judges attention he dropped the ticked. The problem is, since getting the ticket thrown out, I was stopped again and given the same ticket. I tried to explain the situation to the officer, but he wasn't having it. How do I go about insuring that I can ride my legal scooter without being harassed by misinformed police officers?
Jacob- In order to take an issue to the supreme court, or any appeals court, you have to be contesting a decision made by a judge. That is not the case here, as the judge sided with me. There is nothing to appeal, and im sure when i return to court the judge will again dismiss the ticket. The issue is that the cops dont know the law, and think they are justified in continuing to stop me and write tickets. Unfortunately for me, when explaining myself to an officer, it sounds to the officer exactly like all the other mounds of BS they hear come out of peoples mouths who are just trying to get out of consequences for a truly illegal activity on a daily basis, so they dont pay any attention to it.
Joey-You are incorrect. It is federally mandated (see link below) that this scooter is regulated by state governments as a bicycle, not a motor vehicle. As such, an officer stopping me on the scooter and writing a ticket for an unregistered motor vehicle is the equivalent to an officer stopping someone on a normal bicycle and writing them a ticket for an unregistered motor vehicle. In addition i find the tone of your comment unnecessary and abusive and you will be reported.

http://www.gpo.gov/fdsys/pkg/PLAW-107publ319/pdf/PLAW-107publ319.pdf
Kenneth C-Thank you for your input. I actually did stumble across the segway argument in ny during my research. However, you have failed to consider the provision in the federal law which not only allows you to own the low speed electric bicycle, but dictates that it is to be considered and regulated as a normal bicycle(which you ARE allowed to operate on the roadways). The issue in question here is not whether it is legal to ride the scooter on the street, as that has already been confirmed by a judge. The question is how to display and prove to misinformed police officers the already established FACT that it IS legal to ride it on the street.

In addition, this federal law supersedes any and all state laws including new yorks, which means this low speed electric bicycle is legally operable on any roadways where bicycles are legally operable in new york as well as anywhere else in the us. Unfortunately since segways do NOT have fully operable foot pedals, they do not fall into the cat

Answer
NYS has something similar. Here is the caveat. YES. You can own that scooter. The the federal law allows you to own that and as many as you want. The way NYS has it though, which I assume is similar to Jersey is that in NYS, any vehicle that is powered by other than human power must be registered. NYS will not register the electric bicycle. There was a similar argument with those Segways in NYS and though it is legal to own one, it is illegal to ride one because they are not registerable.

I know, it's silly. And though you provide a good argument, the police are not wrong in giving you the summons. I do not understand personally why these are unregisterable, but in some states, they are. I guess now I know Jersey is one of those states.

Edit - Before I continue, I disagree with the fact that your scooter is considered "unregisterable". That said, in looking at section (d) of the federal statutes, it does state "This section shall SUPERSEDE ANY STATE LAW OR REQUIREMENT
with respect to low-speed electric bicycles to the extent that such
State law or requirement is more stringent than the Federal law
or requirements referred to in subsection (a).ââ.

Now section (a) states, "SEC. 38. (a) Notwithstanding any other provision of law, lowspeed
electric bicycles are consumer products within the meaning
of section 3(a)(1) and shall be subject to the Commission regulations
published at section 1500.18(a)(12) and part 1512 of title 16, Code
of Federal Regulations.".

What I interpret from reading those two sections is that YES, this low speed electrical bicycle is considered a consumer product. The law doesn't dictate that the state can't regulate how this product is used. It never stated that this bicycle must be registered if it is owned. You can own a car, but you can't drive it unless it is registered. The fault is not in the police officer's giving you the ticket. (You would think they have better things to do than to break your shoes over this nonsense) The fault is in the state for not allowing this to be registered. (For the life of me I still don't know why it wouldn't be). Not trying to split hairs, but I would be more angry with your state's legislatures than with the cops. (Although the cops should have better things to do than to deal with this nonsense as long as you are not trying to run people over or behave recklessly on it.) It's not that I am debating you to debate you, I just wouldn't want to see you keep getting tickets, regardless of principle.

I am thinking of buying one, how do you like riding yours? If you are in the state of Florida, have you ever been stopped for riding it without a drivers license? If yes, what was the outcome? Looks like Florida drivers license laws are about to change, I don't want to jeopardize a chance to get mine back so I will not buy an elec assist bike if I could be arrested for driving it w/o a license.

Bikes like the razor mx650?

George

I'm 16 now and I am looking for miniature dirt bikes that are preferably electric (i don't want to have to pay for gas) and are also under 300-400 dollars. I am having trouble finding anything that goes fasterthan the razor mx650 that is under $1000. I am also 6'0'' if that helps with anything because I don't want to be too big for it. Thanks a bunch!!!!

Answer
George, you have run out of options, given your height you really have only two left. Step up to something in a dirt bike that is suitable for your height and there fore will be petrol powered or to take up another sport. OK, you are only 16 years old but you have outgrown "miniature" dirt bikes and already be confident on a full sized 125cc engine rather than a look like you are caught in a time warp on an underpowered electric bike suitable for a 6 year old, or younger.

Sorry to be blunt but you are 16 years old, it's time to step up to a 16 year olds dirt bike...

best electric bike conversion kit on 800 Watt Electric Bicycle Conversion Kit - 48 Volt | Buy New Online
best electric bike conversion kit image
Q. More specifically can I build a go cart usin motorized bike wills from a conversion kit to make any bike an electric bike.

Answer
Yes you can. However yor will have a quadracycle. The smallest hub motors you can get for a bike are 16 inch.

Check with your state dmv for regs on motorized biks. Some will consider an electric bike a moped and require its registration there are also speed and power limits that must not be exceeded in order to be legal. Also a four wheeled cycle can be classified differently and require a registration to be allowed on the road where as a two of three wheeled one doesn't. a quadracycle can be treated like a car for the purpose of registration requiring insurance. Basically the Dmv is discouraging the use of quadracycles because they are wide slow moving vehicles that can't get out of the way of automotive .
traffic.

In Mass a narrow two wheeled vehicle like a bike is legal to operate on the road while a wide segway is not.

How do you turn a bicycle into a electric powered bike without buying a conversion kit?

When I say without a kit I mean buying all the parts and assembling it yourself.

Looking for a full component, REAL bike - not a small wheeled toy.

Answer
Here are some real folding bikes;

(ignore the electric assist)

but it kind of depends on how you travel; its hard to travel with 26" wheeled folding bikes without paying real high excess baggage charges.

Brompton review http://www.foldabikes.com
A Considered Opinion:

"---- The fact is - and we might as well get this over with - the Brompton is more or less unassailable in terms of practicality, ride and foldability. We've never seen a bike come close: a few 20-inch big wheelers are faster (not all though), a handful of machines have a rudimentary luggage carrying system, and some fold quite well, but the Brompton scores 8/10 in all these areas, so it can't be beaten. Not yet, anyway."

I like Giatex for good ride-ability but still folds down easily at a decent price.

What is the best electricscooter or bike? ?

Derek

I need one that is foldable, seated, goes above 20 mph, has a key start and maybe a throttle.

it doesn't have to be exactly like this but as close as possible.

Answer
The best bicycle is one that you pedal. Electric bicycles have a short charge period. The charge always seems to run out in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Can I use many lithium Ion batteries and send them through a controller to an electric motor?

Johnny Fre

This is a complex question I know. I know little about electrical engineering but I want to build an electric bike. I could buy the same materials others have used but I'd like to use Lithium Ion Batteries. So can I connect wires from many bats to a standard controller and then to an electric motor? I assume I can, energy is energy, but what should I look out for. Has anyone tried this?

Answer
This is basically what they do for car batteries in hybrid motors, so yes, this is doable.

It seems like we are so behind in electric bicycle compared to China, Taiwan, Netherlands, etc....

Answer
Get a nice test ride for speed and hill climbing.
Get all warranties in writing.

Try a Bionx Dealer, Bioinx is pretty reliable.

So here is a partial Bay area listing:

Try Santa Cruz, they have a bunch.

Dave's Custom Bikes is located at 910 Soquel Avenue, across from the Albertsonâs shopping center and Tony and Albaâs Pizza, 3 1/2 blocks up the hill from Ocean Street, in Santa Cruz.

If my kill switch on my motorcycle was broke off will the motorcycle still start?

J P

Sorry guys... it is a 1982 kawasaki kz1100 .It was in storage and the key was lost also the kill switch on the throttle grip was broken i was wondering if after i get a key made if i am going to have problems with this switch being broken...

Answer
The kill switch on a motorcycle is basically exactly what it says. A means to kill the engine. It does so by shorting out the electric by grounding it to the handlebar.
If the switch was broke in such a way that the wire touched the handlebar it won't start. If it was broke and the wire didn't hit the bar it would start but render the switch inoperative.
As another said you didn't mention the make or style of the bike. If it has an ignition you can use it to shut off the bike. Some use the kill switch to shut them down. If this is the case you can make another switch easily by using what we did when racing. Attach the wire to a piece of metal, (we used a piece of hacksaw blade) wrap tape around the handlebar and the blade so that the blade has tape to keep it off the bar on one end and lays on the bar on the other. This shorts out the bike and it wont run. Now put a small piece of leather under the one end of the blade and the bike will start and run. Pull out the leather and it shorts out again. We used this in hill climbing and racing by attaching the leather by a strap wrapped around our wrist. If we left the bike the strap would pull out and the bike would kill.

How can I make a relatively cheap motorized bicycle with either electric or gas motor?

Krazy Karl

I'm looking far into the future for a summer project and am thinking of trying to put together a motorized bicycle from home parts. I've been searching the net trying to find some guidance, just so I don't kill myself, but I'm having difficulties. I'm searching for ANY help, plans, possible parts, past experience, anything. Thanks!

Karl

Answer
Motorizing isn't the problem. The problem is that there isn't a bicycle out there that is safe at a speed faster than what you can pedal and mostly because of the poor quality of the brakes with which they're equipped. When I was stationed in 'Nam they had some hybrid bicycles which you started off pedaling and then pulled a lever which dropped a small motor down so the small wheel on the motors output shaft contacted the front wheel of the bike and turned it. Even though it had a better braking system than a standard bike I saw a lot of young ladies (which was mostly what rode them) taking some real nasty spills when they couldn't stop in time at intersections.
Also a buddy of mine, back in the early 50's had a motor bike which was built by the Schwinn Corp. It used a belt drive on the rear and had decent brakes, similar to a motor cycles.

thank you!

Answer
Yes, you'll be fine. You can ride a super-ped if you like. The Piaggio MP3 variants.
The only 250cc 400cc or 500 cc bikes you can ride in the UK with only a normal car driving license, no bike license needed.
They are petrol/electric hybrid 3-wheel bikes with very good fuel economy, excellent road grip, tilting suspension on the two front wheels and a decent performance including a quoted 0 - 60mph in 5 seconds for the 500cc but some people have had reliability problems with them, and they are not cheap.

when do the 2013 dirt bikes come out?

Linda

im looking to get a new 250 dirt bike and i want to know when the 2013s come out. I am looking at honda, kawasaki, suzuki, ktm, yamaha...all the major brands.

Answer
All the bikes come out the same time, around the end of 2012. All the bikes are very similar, you're going to have to ride each of the bikes to find your preference.

KTM is way too much money, currency between Austria and the US isn't good. Yamaha is too advanced, their 2013 models are going to look like a futuristic robot, and it might even have electric start, which adds around 20 lbs.

Kawasaki is great as the 2012 model almost dominates the other bikes. I prefer the Suzuki, but it's all rider preference. Suzuki isn't over designed, it's the best bike in my opinion. Next years bikes could go from $8,000, but the KTMs... (Keep Throwing Money). Could go up to $10,000.

How do I convert a normal pedal bike into an electric powered pedal bike?

best electric bikes uk image

Henry R

I need a list of required components (preferably cheaplyl sourced) and tools required. Also any changes that will need to be made to the bike and the motor used. I'm a fast learner and want to try it but I have no technical knowledge. I want a pollution free transport method but I can't afford to buy an expensive new one (cost over GBP500!). Based in UK.

Answer
You can purchase a kit for about $200 with everything you need included. Including wheels if you ened them - with 16" through 26" wheels.

Kit includes self-contained removable power unit, mounting rack, and mounting hardware. The power unit is designed for easy installation and removal so the bicycle that it is attached to can be ridden as an electric bicycle with the power unit installed, or ridden as a regular bicycle with the power unit removed.

Powered by two fresh Universal Power Group® SLA batteries with a 12 month manufacturers warranty.
