Answer
I would suggest MR CANADA IMPORTS - www.mrcanadaimports.com, they are a distributor and wholesaler of brand name model electric e-bikes, Mountain Electric Cycle, Folding Electric Bike, and city e-bike versions, including a popular model for use is the stb-mountain bike "Series E03, E01, F02 older clients" < very good seller for us.

No matter if your located in USA or CANADA or UK, i would contact these guys, these models are unlike regular store brand electric bikes, as you will see when you see them, they feature 36V 10Ah Li-ion battery as you requested and much more.. The Emode time is the best on the market, highest electric mileage then any other model currently sold.

These have helped our sales for this coming season since we have sold-out
all our first stock via pre-orders. If i was you i would order some samples now, display in your store and base your orders on the demand of that model.

good luck on your ventures..
you might want to provide free replacement tires with each purchase to obtain those sales, this is what we offer with the puncture resistant K-shield tires in 3 of our stores, and the response has been very good :)
the wait time including delivery for us was an average of 45 days for 460 units.

electric bicycle question?

nitronorbe

i have some decent size 14.4 volt lithium batteries that i got from work and they are worth hundreds of dollars. i have a new 26 inch mountain bike and i thought it would be nice to convert it into an electric bicycle. does anyone know of the cheapest way to do this? i've been looking online at kits and stuff but it's pretty confusing and i don't know if 14.4 volts is enough or if i need to combine some batteries in series to make 28 volts. Also i know know if using 28 volts on 24 volt motors will damage the motor badly or not. Any advice is greatly appreciated. . Also i want a bigger motor with fast speed if possible.

Answer
I doubt very much that your mechanical and engineering skills are up to the job. All you have is some batteries. In order to build an electric bike you will have to design some kind of drive system, you need more than just a motor. You also have to design and build some kind of controller and a wiring harness to connect everything together. You also will have to build a holder for the batteries. Decent electric bikes sell for well over $1000 for good reason, the components are costly. Decent conversion kits can cost upwards of $1000 as well. There is no cheap way to do what you want to do, even if you had a complete machine shop, welding equipment and the knowledge to put everything together

Which countries now have full-electric car technology besides China and Japan?

Q. BYD e6 electric full-size SUV: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BYD_e6

Nissan LEAF compact electric car: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nissan_Leaf

* Chevrolet Volt is not full-electric besides it needs gasoline as fuel.

Answer
It depends upon what you mean by "full-electric car technology" and by asking "which countries"...

Electric cars are not a national phenomena. They are things. National policies can promote electric cars but to my knowledge no country has nationalized an electric car building company and is producing electric cars on their own. Corporations may give some a feeling of national pride or identity but many corporations are multi national and may hold allegiance to no country.

Countries and areas that promote electric cars with incentives are more likely to attract corporations that are making electric cars. Such companies are in some ways not very different than other corporations. If an area will provide certain grants, property, utilities, or tax incentives then companies are more likely to build a plant in that location. Having cheap labor and reasonable lines of supply are also a plus. Selling their products may require a different set of incentives to attract buyers.

A case in point may be "Better Place." http://www.betterplace.com/ This company does not make cars. They sell a battery swapping service. They have several international initial target locations including: Israel, Denmark, Australia and Hawaii, San Francisco and Canada. The nissan leaf was to be a part of their system and may be in the future. For now they are swapping batteries on the Renault Fluence ZE. http://www.betterplace.com/ By some measure this might be considered a "full-electric car technology," but to what country are you going to attribute this technology? Shai Agassi, the companies founder and CEO has lived in California and Israel.

The Tesla Roadster is an American company and a media success. It is now selling their cars internationally, but the actual number of vehicles sold is presently just over 1000.1 Their are many lessor known electric vehicle companies that may happily sell you a vehicle that is hardly a production run. For a full production run of a full electric vehicle (BEV: battery electric vehicle) that is fully highway capable in the US we are looking to the Nissan Leaf as a first. Zap vehicles have been built in China for years and sold by an American Company internationally as motorcycles but we might not necessarily put these in the same class as the Nissan Leaf. The same may be true of other of the ess expensive Chinese cars.

I would agree that the Volt is not a "full electric" vehicle, but it is more electric than the more parallel hybrid prius. From a purist point of view perhaps even a BEV is not a pure electric vehicle as it uses chemistry in the batteries. A pure electric might use ultracapacitors for storage or something like this: http://electric-vehicles-cars-bikes.blogspot.com/2009/08/korean-researchers-develop-electric.html

Advantage of electric powered car by means of transportation?

Destiny

I want to know what are the other good benefits of an electric powered car aside from being ecofriendly to a country or to the society..:D i want also to know if a car which is powered by electricity is faster than an ordinary one..

Answer
An electric car can accelerate faster than a ICE vehicle due to full torque at 0 rpm: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=369h-SEBXd8

Batteries are usually placed on the bottom of an electric vehicle. This lowers the center of gravity improving handling and making it far more difficult for the vehicle to tip over: http://www.commutercars.com/

An electric car is about 6 times as efficient as an ICE vehicle:
"The [Tesla] Roadster's motor efficiency, battery-to-wheel, is 92% on average... For comparison, internal combustion engines have a tank-to-wheel efficiency of about 15%." http://www.absoluteastronomy.com/topics/Tesla_Roadster

An electric vehicle can travel further on the energy used to refine a gallon of oil then an ICE vehicle can travel using the refined product: see "How Much Electricity is used to run gasoline cars?" at: http://www.evnut.com/gasoline_oil.htm

An electric car is a zero emissions vehicle (ZEV.) If the electricity comes from a clean source the EV will be part of a Zero emissions vehicle transportation system. Even the combination of an electric vehicle and a coal fired power station is cleaner than a gasoline vehicle. http://www.electroauto.com/info/pollmyth.shtml
"Might as well leave the oil in the ground!" http://planet.betterplace.com/forum/topics/electricity-vs-oil

The electric vehicle can actually get cleaner as it gets older if the source of its electricity becomes cleaner. An ICE vehicle gets dirtier as it ages and the engine carbons up.

The electric vehicle uses a domestic fuel. Almost all the electricity used in the US is from domestic sources. (Some electricity is produced in neighboring countries and some is made from oil produced in foreign countries.)

If an electric vehicle has power transmitted to if from the roadway it does not need batteries: http://www.thedailygreen.com/living-green/blogs/cars-transportation/electric-highways-electric-cars-460909

Electric vehicles can easily be fitted with regenerative braking allowing them to recover some of the energy contained in forward movement. This increases efficiency and reduces wear on any braking system.

Electric vehicles have very few moving parts in the drive train and operate at far lower temperatures. This means maintenance will be far less than an ICE vehicle, parts will wear more slowly, with fewer parts repairs will cheaper and not usually required.

Electric vehicles have no oil or air filters, to change the control systems are electronic and not mechanical to go out of adjustment. There is no radiator to overheat or freeze. It requires no antifreeze.

Electric vehicles use an existing infrastructure, the power grid, for fuel. Some reports suggest over 84% of our present fleet of vehicles could be charged with existing equipment if they were charged at night. Electrified roadways would eliminate the need for charging or be used to charge vehicles as well as power them. http://www.redherring.com/Home/pages/print/posts/?bid=deb0b00e-4e3d-46d8-920f-3eb04aa32b13&mode=Full

When people try electric vehicles they like them: http://electric-vehicles-cars-bikes.blogspot.com/2010/06/smart-ev-trial-shows-that-electric.html?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+blogspot%2FpEcq+%28Electric+Vehicles%29

does anybody have any experience with electric bikes?

Bruce (Bil

I' really interested in Schwins . . . . .

Answer
I have some experience with electric bikes. Here's what I know.

Any of the cheaper electrics, $500 or less, will not last a long time. If you take care of it, treat it nice, do EXACTLY what the instructions say regarding charging and riding, you'll probably get 2 years of regular use out of it. That's really not bad in my opinion for an inexpensive bike. It will probably save you that much in gas if you use it enough.

That being said, there are some more expensive electrics out there that are really good. The one I have experience with is the Giant Suede E. It's $1000, and will probably last years longer than those cheaper ones. You still have to take proper care of the battery, and try not to ride it through lakes, or into the ocean, but it's a quality bike, made to ride often and be durable.

Either way, you're getting something that will make it easier to bike, so you can get your workout, but not have to worry about getting home. If you use it for short trips around town it can save you tons in gas, not to mention the environment, and frankly, they're just fun to ride.

Which pedal assist bicycle can I ride in the UK?

tarra

I have looked into the uk regulations in regard to the pedal assist bicycles. They are treated like normal bicycles in the UK and can be ridden on shared pathways (pedestrians/cyclists). They are plenty of these where I live so that isn't a problem. I don't want a bicycle that is expensive as all I want it for is to exercise my dog. I have trouble with my legs, they get tired with manual pedal ling so a pedal assist bicycle would be ideal to help me keep up with my dog.

My dilemma is which companies in the UK conform to the UK regulations in pedal Assist bicycles? If they meet the criteria of the UK regulations they don't need to be registered, road taxed or insured hence the need to pick the correct one. I am 5 ft 5 and am looking for an affordable assisted bicycle that will meet my need. I have no intention of riding it on the road as I wouldn't feel safe.

If anyone cn help me pick the correct bicycle I would appreciate it.

Answer
No direct answer here, since the UK often believes it isn't part of Europe, but nevertheless:
- what I can find here (Germany) falls into two classes: Pedelecs with a top speed of 25 kph (and a few limitations), which are legal all across Europe and treated as bicycles, and electric bikes with a top speed of 40 kph (and some other limitations) which are sold only for use within Germany (and need insurance here).
- the basic limitations for the '25 kph' types are that the motor may only support while pedalling and the motor may not support above a speed of 25 kph. There are some types with a 'start assist' function that enables the motor to push without pedalling at speeds up to 6 kph, but while those are legal under German law as bicycles, some insurances don't know yet whether they're going to treat those as regular bicycles (i.e. they're included in any general liability insurance) or not (i.e. you'd need an additional insurance for them if you want it - usually a good idea).
- why don't you go down to your local bike store and ask the people who are selling those things?

in the uk what can a 14/15 year old drive?

k

moped? electric scooters? where? do i have to take a test?
ok so i know about mopeds but what about eletric scooters. this is the uk by the way. london specificly.

Answer
A Bicycle or a Skateboard........

When you hit 16 you're allowed a Scooter / Moped / Motorbike providing the engine doesn't exceed 50cc + top speed doesn't exceed 31mph (50kph).... and also have to take the CBT course / test.

When you hit 17yrs old, you can upgrade to a 125cc Motorbike / scooter / moped... or start learning to drive a car.

Looks similar to the lights I have for my bike. About 180 hours in the flashing mode. Half that long in the steady mode. I've replaced the AA batteries once in the headlight because I keep that on steady all the time. The rear light is still on the original factory batteries.

I want to convert my bicycle to electric motor, would a 250watt motor be strong enough?

tad t

I have a bike that I ride to work every day, I want to convert it to a bike similar to this http://www.peltzer.net/ebike/ But the motor on that bike is 700+ watt, and he says it goes up to ~27 mph, I am working if this motor would work for me, http://www.cloudelectric.com/product_p/mo-w13113099030.htm , Just a 250watt, I don't need much speed just want to get to and from work but there are some hills both to and from so I'm wondering if this would be strong enough

Answer
I looked at the peltzer site you mention. That was the scariest looking conversion I have seen. If you want random loss of limbs, use that. What you need is a kit which will supply a motor built into front or rear wheel; intelligent controller that varies power drawn from the battery according to need; brake levers that shut off power as well as stop the bike; twist grip or thumb throttle control; carrier for battery and proper lithium battery. I do not know where you live or what your local laws regulating electric bikes are. In the UK and rest of the EU, bicycles must be Pedelec with a maximum motor power of 250 watts and top speed under power of 15 mph. When pedaling only you can go as fast as you like. If you know all this, apologies for repeating it. I have just had my first longish run today on my first Pedelec bike, a Synergy Mistral, with those specs. It was actually quite thrilling in a funny way. I am 68 and have two other non powered bikes. Today's trip was just under twenty miles round trip with a following wind outward which was about 12 mph against me on the way home, plus two 14% hills also against me. 250 watts seems puny, but the controller is very efficient at adjusting to your needs. Remember that the Pedelec system assists your pedaling input. I managed an average speed of 9 mph over the return 10 miles, and was as puffed as a thirty year old. And I had full panniers weighing in at 24 kilos. Usually I managed 4 mph having to stop several times on the hills to avoid heart attack, or something.. I forgot to mention that I have arthritis in both knees, and weigh 19 stone. I have found cycling is an excellent form of exercise for this. I had to make the choice between converting one of my bikes using a kit, or buying a ready made Electric Bike. I chose the latter. The complete bicycle costs very little more than a kit and will be more reliable. Shop around on the internet. There are lots of bargains to be had, and careful searching will reward you.
I hope this helps,
Best Wishes,

Product Description
For aspiring little Grand Prix champs, this mini motorbike - complete with cool racing decals and realistic sounds - is the most excitement this side of the checkered flag!

My boys ages 2 and 4 love this bike! My two year old hadn't gotten the concept of steering in 1 year of owning his tricycle but in a few minutes on a motorized bike he figured it out after running into enough walls. Originally I purchased this bike for my older son only and got my 2 year old a three wheel smaller version from another company that was supposed to go the same speed...it didn't. My older son was running 3 laps around my younger son litterally as they rode around the house. I didn't think that my younger son would be able to handle the bigger bike but to our surprise when my oldest turned his back he jumped on his bike and took off!...so we sent his bike back and ordered him the mini motorcross as well. I like that they have to master coordinating their feet and steering and the switch of forward and reverse...very user friendly for the kids.

What kind of 250 dirt bike should i get?

j c

I have decided to get a 250 dirt bike next after having my xr 80 for 8 years. i will use it for mainly trail riding and racing the guys around town. what brand should i get, i have no clue what one is the best and what is the worse

Answer
There are a variety of good options for you. I would recommend a 4-stroke for trail riding for the wide powerband, the low end torque allows them to just keep on chugging. Though there are some perfectly capable 2-strokes out there for trails.
For trail riding, I would recommend against a moto-x or "racing" style bike. The gears are too close and the lowest ones are often too high for real technical trail stuff.
Some of the ones I am familiar with (through ownership) are the
WR-250 and the XR-250.
I moved up to the XR-250 from an XR-200 and it is a WORLD of difference. It surprised me greatly, so make sure you start carefully moving up from an 80. The engine is vastly superior, and it can do 3rd gear wheelies without popping the clutch :P. It's among the best off road machines I've ever ridden, the powerband is perfect. It also has disk brakes on both tires (unlike the 200), which you definitely want.

The racing derived bikes, like the WR (based off the YZ), is basically a racing bike with different gearing and a few trail oriented changes. Usually they keep the same high-output high-compression racing motors, which can be finicky. Some of them even recommend a rebuild after every racing season (or more frequent!), though trail riding doesn't put as much strain on it. The XR has an air cooled engine, which I've noticed can get VERY HOT in the summer when your not able to move very fast for a while. The racing derived bikes tend to be liquid cooled, but are a tad more high-strung. I've had issues with both bikes with hot starting, especially after being dropped (the XR not as bad, but sometimes it can be stubborn). If you get a bike that uses a decompress to help start (WR does, XR has one but doesn't need it), it helps if you can get one with an auto-decompress exhaust cam (greatly eases starting), or electric start (though I personally won't ride a bike that ONLY has an electric start). The WR I believe has come with a decompress standard for quite some time now (and I think electric start now too), but I had to retrofit my older model with the cam. 2-strokes do tend to start easier, I will concede that to them ;).

Things you want in a trail bike:
tons of low-end torque
disc brakes, front and back
lower, wide ratio, trail gearing
comfortable (enough) seat
probably more I'm forgetting...

almost all bike manufacturer's make a good trail bike around that displacement class. Hit up the bike forums and reviews and see what people have to say about the bikes your looking at.

best of luck on your decision and have a blast!

edit: forgot to mention, if you like the Honda CRF250, check out the CRF250X model, it is the Honda equivalent to the WR, with the different gearing, etc. from the full out racing bike.

Need a scooter/bike? Electric or Gas?

I need to find a electric or gas scooter, or a gas bike. I was wondering if the chinesse cheapy ones on ebay were fine. Such as. http://cgi.ebay.com/KIDS-YELLOW-49CC-GAS-POCKET-MINI-DIRT-BIKE-OFF-ROAD-50_W0QQitemZ380031419165QQihZ025QQcategoryZ75211QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
Has anyone had an experience with those. Or should i just go with a known brand. Please suggest bikes and scooters with links. Thanks. I plan on buying used. My budget is around 300-400-500

can you guys also tell me what you think about these...

Thanks, and if the ebay items finish. I will post new links. THANKS!
Okay Thanks you guys.
So looks like I am getting a Gas Scooter.
It does not have to be super fast. I plan on just using to commute for like groceries and school etc. etc. What are some good websites and brands I should look into? Also, I live in California. Is there any license I need?
Also, I am seeing that the gas engines need 2 cycle oil as well? Is their a certain ratio or should it say with the scooter? Where can I find 2 cycle oil? Suggestions?

Thanks everyone. Sorry if these are stupid questions.
I'm 13 yrs old. Turning 14 soon. I am 5' 4'' and 100lbs. Thanks

Answer
Search ebay for Kymco scooters I noticed last night there were several below dealer ship price. Kymco is the largest scooter manufactuer in the world very high quality and very resonable price. The only decent electric I know about is made by ZAP. You will just have search the web. It is a very good scooter just hard to find.

Does an electric bike really work?

Hi everyone, I was wondering if a 36 volt 600w conversion kit, new, off ebay would really work??!?!? And if I could simply add it onto my bicycle? Please help! are they worth the money?

Answer
The real problem with these conversion kits is the huge variation in quality. Without knowing what brand, what's included in it, and what type of battery is included, if any, it's impossible to tell.

The best conversions kits for the average bike are the ones with a motor in the front hub and a quality controller. These allow you to leave the standard drive-train alone and let it be an assist to normal pedaling. This provides much greater range than running purely electric. You should look up the laws about the wattage allowed in your state. These are listed under motor vehicle laws since this is most definitely a motor vehicle.

Last is the battery.
Good: Lead-acid deep discharge (not your car battery). Not outrageously expensive and decent life.
Better: Nickel Metal Hydride (NiMH). Better range, lighter, safe and durable.
Best: LiFePO4, or Lithium Iron Phosphate, is safer than your laptop battery, has the best range and durability. It is also the most expensive.

Last issue is of course the charger to keep your battery charged. The kit should include one.

All these little details are why the quality of the kit matters. If they have taken care of these and you are expecting a nice assist for the hills and a great range extender, these kits can be absolutely great.

If you are expecting a motorcycle like experience with long range and high speed, you are better off with an electic scooter or the new Brammo motorcycle available at Best Buy. The Brammo has a roughly 40 mile range (real world) and is a real motorcycle without the hassles of gas.

Solar Panel wattage for my Electric Bike?
I am looking to purchase an Electric Bike for transport to work. I work on an Organic farm and need to save some energy up those hills.

I need help figuring out what size solar panels would be needed to charge the battery, and whether its plausible.

I'm looking at Ebay in Australia as I am immigrating down there. I prefer to afford the foldable/portable solar panel system: 80 watt, 120 watt, 160 watt, but IF necessary a bit more.

300w 3 PHASE 36v ELECTRIC REAR WHEEL
THREE 12v 17ah SLA BATTERIES (Total 36v)

or

Motor: 250 Watt brush-less DC hub
Batteries: 24V/10Ah pack, valve regulated

can anyone out there help explain to me how to figure this out?

Answer
You will want to have some sort of voltage regulation.
If the panel voltage drops off you don't want to discharge the batteries on your bike.
And you would not want to overcharge your batteries.

Harbor Freight has a fold out 18 to 24 vdc solar recharger.(see link)

For a work/home commute you might not want to haul the charger around everyday.
Ask the folks at the farm if you could set up a solar charging station. They might even help.
I'd suggest a bicycle locker that has the panel on top and a couple spaces for bicycles with charging stations inside, out of the elements. Your employers may like the idea.

Electric Bike?

Q. Hey I'm going to be moving a ways away from my kung fu school. So I will have to bike there but we are talking like 30 miles away at least. So my question is if anyone knows what that bike adapter kit is where it lets you switch between pedaling and driving?

Answer
there are allot of electric bikes and kits out there, but the problem is weight, performance, and distance per charge, remember, if you use those batteries for 10-20 Miles they are bone dry, and you have to pedal with an additional 80 pounds of weight, so you think, i ll add more batteries, but then you add more weight, then you need a bigger motor, so on and so forth, to have a more efficient setup you would need lighter batteries that last longer, lithium ion, or nickle metal hybrid, but they are very pricey, and you would need allot of them.

electric biking is not yet a transportation alternative, unless your going very short distance.

but if you wait, I'm currently working on a revolutionary concept for power assisted bicycles that will be available on the market for the summer of 2007 and will give you a 250 mile autonomy, and will only add 9.2lbs.

Bike tire inflation?

knotty411

Hi,

I have a racing bike with 700c tires (120 psi max) and the tubes packaging say not to inflate with a compressor. I have a hand pump but no way can I get that high, I can't even get it high enough for a proper ride (it's an old pump).

So I was wondering, why does my tube packaging say not to pump with an air compressor? Is there a special reason and what would happen if I do? I need to put air in my tire and don't feel like buying a expensive air pump.

Thanks,

Bryan

Answer
Compressors intended for inflating car and truck tires can provide so much air so quickly that you can damage a bicycle tire and perhaps even the rim. Before I learned this from the bicycle pundits, I inflated my bike tires at the local filling station time after time without a problem. Be careful, because the pressure gauges on car/truck inflation compressors are not always accurate. The floor hand pump is best. Mine was about $20 at Performance. I also have a small electric home compressor that I've used for many years without a problem. The hand compressor is faster and easier for bikes.

Answer
An electric bicycle is basically a smaller scooter its a regular bike with an small engine to assist riders but its a lot heavier than regular bicycles . Your not going to notice the weight while riding because the motor is doing most the work for you if you want the exercise factor get a road/hybrid bicycle or a thinned tires on a MTB shall do it .

ELECTRIC BIKE QUESTION!!! ?

mike

Ok so I wanna convert my bike to a electric bike..I want to be able to travel like 30 or so miles on it at about 25mph is this possible under 300-350 dollars? I would even consider a used one on eBay
Oh ya and my bike just a regular comfort bike with 26 inch tires
Would it be better to buy one or use a electric bike conversion kit? Thanks!

Answer
I would take that $350 & look into a lighter hybrid or performance hybrid bicycle. Bikes with electric motors, either home built or store bought, always seem to drain the charge quickly and in the wrong place. Then what? You are stuck pedaling that behemoth home on leg power. The lighter the bicycle, the easier it usually is to pedal. Especially with the 700C tires found on hybrids & performance hybrids. They're taller & thinner than those found on your comfort bike.

Electric motor for bike?

Q. I have a recumbent bike - E-Z Sport. I am looking for an electric motor for it - for a good price. The best I can find is an E4 for $700. Can anyone help me find a better deal? I love biking but have become disabled and need a motor in order to contine biking with family.
I can't use a moped on bike trails. I want to continue biking with my family on bike trails.

Answer
I assume your U.S. have a look at this kit. The motor is very efficient (>95%). This will give you the best range out of what ever batteries you choose.

http://www.cyclone-usa.com/store.php?crn=199
You can buy the kit or just the motor/gearbox.

Being a recumbent you should be able to mount the motor near your idler pulley and keep your original chainrings. The down side to this method will be that you need to pedal when the motor is on. Depending on your disability you may wish to go with the freewheeling chainring that they supply with the kit.

A front hub motor will not work so well on a recumbent (not enough weight on the wheel)

I'll give you a hint: Hub motors have some disadvantages compared to motors that drive the bicycles chain, namely low speed thrust for climbing steep hills with heavy loads. But that never actually becomes a factor because your speed never drops too far when you ride an electric bike. The good outweighs the bad when it comes to hub motors.

I recommend Crystalyte 5000 series hub motors. And absolutely pay a little extra and get lithium batteries. The lighter weight means longer range and better performance, and they pay for themselves in the long run because they have a longer life span.

It's going to cost you some money if you want the best quality. If you don't like the sticker shock, walmart sells an electric bicycle you can search for on their website. It's dirt cheap and it will last a few years if you take care of it.

1.) How long do they last before "burning out"
2.) How many miles can you typically travel on one without having to pedal?
3.) When going up a steep hill, is the bike powerful enough to move upward without having to pedal at all?

Answer
We will just use my Giant Lafree Lite as a sample"

1)How long do they last before "burning out"?
I am 230 lbs,and have ridden this bike 4K miles over 3 years and NO problems other than flat tires.

2.) How many miles can you typically travel on one without having to pedal? I have to pedal on this bike. I can go 30miles on this ebike designed in 2002 and costing $1300.

3.) When going up a steep hill, is the bike powerful enough to move upward without having to pedal at all?
Again, this ebike requires me to pedal, as you should on most ebikes. I have arthritis and asthma, but I can make it up a 7% hill at 7mph carrying 20lbs of groceries

Electric Bikes?

Q. Hi, for next christmas I was hoping to buy an electric bike.

However I dont know where I could get one from.

If you could please give me some links, advice, whats needed and costs for them I would be most greatful.

Thanks!
thanks alot...

Answer
There is no one "best" ebike for all situations, dont let anyone tell you different. There are many factors to consider, such as: the bicycle frame, your price range, your performance needs, your installation requirements, and after market service needs.

So lets take some well rated ebikes (all of which I have sold and still service) and compare them:

Giant suede-e (no longer sold, a few still available new, still have service and parts) a little low on power for big guys hauling large loads in tough terrain, BUT VERY Reliable and pretty light weight. Un modifiable. Turnkey- no installation issues and no service or parts issue. $1.1k

Cyclone Kit currrently sold on the internet and a few places across the US (Including me in Colorado) GREAT power. Can be a pain to install, so you have to have a specific bike for it to fit, and someone to help with or do the install unless you are pretty darn good with tools. good value, can make slight modifications, parts available, but not much service.

Bionx Kit, 36v more power than than Giant suede-e, lots of nifty hard to find features, Very bicycle-like for a kit, fairly pricy, easy install, parts available, some service. unmodifiable.

EZee bikes and kits, pretty reliable, good parts, some service, can be either a kit or a turnkey bike. moderate performance. a little pricey, but not a lot. minor mods.

Crystalyte. can be anything you want it to be, not real bicyle like. Lots of parts and internet service advise. reasonable price, controller less than the most reliable. You install- easier than a cyclone, harder than a bionx.

If you need the best performance for the money and you can work with tools and pick out your bike, then Cyclone might be best.

For today total turnkey, maybe an EZEE.

Really want to retain the bicyle feel & arent having extremes of demands- try Bionx.

With all ebikes, all connections are the biggest reliability issue, next are throttles then controllers unless stated above.

You will need to look at some discussion groups to get the best lowdown for your situation.

electric bike kits?

Answer
Electric bikes usually have a limited range power limits and/or limited speed. Most cyclist find that they are not a great deal of help and after a relatively short distance they will actually slow them down.

There are many different versions of electric bike.most fall into these categories.

Friction drive.. They have a roller of some type that runs onto the tyre.

Hub motors electric motor built into either the front or rear wheel.

Chain or belt drives. Either feed into the crank system or drive one of the wheels separately.

To find a kit do a general search on electric bike kits.

Here is a few that I know of. (I'm biased toward the last group there are a bit more efficient)

electric bike???

Q. does an electric bike or motor cycle (please tell me about both) require license to drive on the roads????

Answer
Electric assist only:

Since the passing of HR727, a federal law from 2003, most states have adopted the following:

If a bicycle of 2 or 3 wheels has a small electric helper motor of less than 750 watts ( 1 horsepower) , has working pedals and the motor cuts out at 20mph or less, then it is considered a bicycle, not a motor vehicle.

Most states (other than Hawaii, and New York) honor this, but check your state to be sure.

Some states are even more liberal and allow 1000 watts. Some states add a weight limitation of 100 pounds (Texas). some will add a minimum age, or mandatory helmets.

But the basics are in the first paragraph here and require no license.

Child trailer with an electric bike?

Jennifer H

Can you attach a child trailer to an electric bike? Or a scooter? I'm trying to find something for me and my son, who is four and 40 lbs, that will work with me. I have been walking the 3.5 miles for the last month and just want to find something that will cut down my time. I just think using a regular bike with a trailer will be too much and I will be stuck pushing the bike with the trailer up hills. I've also found child carriers, look very similar to car seats, that can be attached as well. Can those be used? They are actually on the bike, not trailing behind

Answer
Think you're bogging down now on a bike you pedal yourself? It'll be worse with the added weight of an electric assist bicycle. Learn how & when to shift gears. Learn about "spinning" the pedals at a high rpm or "cadence" in lower (easier) gears climbing hills. See links...

Questions about electric bike?

JK

Hi, I just got this electric bike second hand on craigslist - and it's working fine, but I have a few questions about it.

1. Do you remove batteries when you have the bike on the public bike rack to prevent theft? Or do you think that the lock mechanism is good enough to deter the theft? Of course I put U-shape lock on the bike body itself, but I wasn't sure what to do with the battery. It's removable, so for today, (first time out), I removed the battery and brought it with me to the office.

2. how long does this battery last? The previous owner told me she used the bike for two years. How do you know the battery is no good any more? She used it to climb up a hill (gradual, a short steep part, but not so terrible) daily about 1.5 miles. When should I consider getting new battery pack (and how much does it cost?)

3. Is there way to adjust the positioning of the switch to turn the power on because it's in a little awkward place to reach as of right now. (I like to turn it on and off to save battery as I climb up the hill).

Thanks!
to the first responder: I live in upstate NY and the town is full of hills. I dare you to climb the two large hills I just went down and climbed this morning. I'm a middle aged woman with shaky knees and I'm not going to put up with your nonsense. Perhaps you should think about what you say before you post it - and save some embarrassment. You won't dare say that to me in person.

to the second person: I want to turn it on and off because, if you've ever rode bike on a long hill, the incline is not even. Some parts are almost level, and I don't need the assist, but some other parts are steep, then I need assist.
And please only answer if you actually know anything about electric bike.
Also, this is the bike I got: http://www.giant-bicycles.com/en-us/bikes/model/twist.express/7335/44074/ I forgot to add this link in the initial post.

Answer
I would remove the battery. The battery life is determined by the type and the number of recharge cycles. If you turn it off to climb hills why bother with an electric bike. There is a good chance that you already need a new battery. The cost will depend on the type, Google is your friend.

Edit:
You replied without giving any more information about the bike. Most have a Controller that determines how much energy you use.

Electric bike conversion kit that recharges as you pedal?

ChemTalk

Basically what's in the question just wondering if there are any electric bike conversion kits that will partially recharge while you pedal. Kind of like a hybrid; and if you guys have any could you point me to them?

Answer
no
recharge as you pedal?
that would be about .001% efficient

if you are going to pedal, why not let THAT run the bike
instead of pushing a generator, letting that charge a battery, letting the battery run a motor
all of which have losses

just charge from the wall for about 1 cent a day

there is no need to 'charge' from pedaling

Anyone with experience with A2B Electric Bikes or others?

Nathalie

Anyone have any experience with the A2B Electric Bikes?
http://www.ultramotor.com/us/product/

I'm thinking of getting one (or other brands if you have any other recommendations to look at) to ride to work, I'm about 12 miles from work and with some power-assist it would help be get there faster and not as sweaty as if I completely rode 12 miles on my mountain bike. (I've ridden to work before but my old house was 4 miles from work, now I'll be 12 miles away)

Not sure yet if I want the Hybrid or Metro model..

But in general, I'm wondering how these bikes are on ONLY peddle power? For example, say I want to mainly ride on my own peddle power and then use the electric motor once I get tired (either with or without peddling, although peddling shouldn't be too hard if power-assisted even if I'm tired)

I'm concerned with the bike being heavy (55 lbs or so I believe) how hard it is to peddle..

Anyone with experience on these or other electric bikes?

I have a motorcycle so I'm not looking for only a scooter.. I want the exercise but at the same time 12 miles is too much for me to only peddle to work, especially here in the heat of South Florida.

Thanks

Answer
I would ride the motorcycle to work and buy a nice road bike for the $2,300 that bike would cost you. You can travel at 15 mph very easily on a road bike, that's the max speed on the hybrid and you would have a $1,000 or so left over. If you want to get exercise do it after work when it won't hurt to sweat a little.

electric bike kits?

vinny

Electric Bike?

Q. Hey I'm going to be moving a ways away from my kung fu school. So I will have to bike there but we are talking like 30 miles away at least. So my question is if anyone knows what that bike adapter kit is where it lets you switch between pedaling and driving?

Answer
there are allot of electric bikes and kits out there, but the problem is weight, performance, and distance per charge, remember, if you use those batteries for 10-20 Miles they are bone dry, and you have to pedal with an additional 80 pounds of weight, so you think, i ll add more batteries, but then you add more weight, then you need a bigger motor, so on and so forth, to have a more efficient setup you would need lighter batteries that last longer, lithium ion, or nickle metal hybrid, but they are very pricey, and you would need allot of them.

electric biking is not yet a transportation alternative, unless your going very short distance.

but if you wait, I'm currently working on a revolutionary concept for power assisted bicycles that will be available on the market for the summer of 2007 and will give you a 250 mile autonomy, and will only add 9.2lbs.

need to find a battery for electric bike conversion kit.?

Blah Blah

this is what i bought:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/221046610777?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649

it doesn't come with a battery. But what i found is way overpriced. Someone help me find a compatible battery. Thanks.

Answer
Batteries for electric bikes are expensive and you have to buy one that will fit the connecters that go to the controller and the motor. In any case a cheap battery will end up costing more in the long run. IT won't hold as much energy, you won't be able to go as far, it won't last long, and it could even damage the rest of the system

Answer
I don't know. Extremely heavy bike. The motor is probably needed just to move the extra weight of the motor.

I found 1 review of this bike, you might want to find a bike that has been reviewed more.

Need advice on these electric scooters?

lil miss

The description from the guys selling them was that they were Phanthom IV and Sola models but I can't find a review online anywhere. He wants $400 dollars for both of them... we live about three 4-5 miles from work and we just want a way to commute back and forth in a cheap way. Are these good?

http://s307.photobucket.com/albums/nn292/mrs_strawn/?action=view&current=small_1927961214682457.jpg

Answer
Well the price is certainly good. As grizz mentioned the problem will be getting a replacement battery for the Phantom IV. The Sola shouldn't be a problem.

http://www.batteriesplus.com/products/78-0/6111-Scooter-Batteries--Electric/253517-Sola-Scooters/Night-Rider/1.aspx

Bear in mind that both of these scooters have a top speed of about 15 mph, so they're not exactly speedy. That's about as fast as you can go on a decent bicycle.

But again, the price is really good. The only issue is that the batteries will eventually need replacing, and you're probably up a creek when the Phantom battery dies. A bicycle or even electric bicycle wouldn't be a bad option either.

electric bike???

Q. does an electric bike or motor cycle (please tell me about both) require license to drive on the roads????

Electric bike motor?

Will B

I am looking for a good bike motor. It has to do more than 15 MPH, and electric. Not a gas runner, just electricity. Plus it must include a charger and easy instructions. Please (if possible) $100 or less, including shipping. I know thats a little low, but I'm kind of on a budget with gas prices. I don't mind online stores, so give me what info you got.

Answer
I have seen ads for those kits on eBay stores, the only catch will be the price, it will be hard to find one that really works for less than $100 plus shipping.

Anyone have experience with adding an electric motor to your bicycle?

Mark

I have an old trike frame and want to add on an electric motor. This will be my main form of transportation for about 3/4 of the year, and I only need to cover short distances (5-10 miles at the most), but it would be cool if I could go farther!

I will have to rebuild the 3-speed hub, the pedals drive the back axle, and I am wanting to add one of those electric motors that fits *inside* the front wheel hub.

Of course, I'm on a budget, so cost is a big factor. The electric motor and batteries will be the main costs. I am considering using 2 car batteries, 24 volts, and want to add on a small 5 or 10-watt solar battery charger.

I'm not the most mechanically inclined person, but I know enough to find my way around doing a basic engine tune-up on a car, and I have built a lot of desktop computers. I don't figure it will be beyond my capabilities to figure this job out, but I know I'll need to have a good web-site and advice to do it properly.

Anybody with any experience with this kind of project, links to good web-sites, etc. is highly appreciated for leaving a response.
