My friend suggests we should by some electric bikes on sale ($200), and sell them for $350 (original price is $400. Is that ok?

Answer
It is legal. Lots of people make their money this way.

can anyone give me any idea about electric bike and how does it work ?

can anyone give me any idea about electric bike and how does it work ?

Answer
Simple... Over-priced & the charge in the battery always seems to run low or out in the wrong place at the wrong time. Then YOU are stuck pedaling a very heavy bicycle home under your own power. Why not just get a REAL up-to-date & lightweight bicycle?

It will improve your cardiovascular system, you'll become healthier - happier & still have $$$ left in your pocket. Want to waste $2,000 or more? Get an electric bicycle.

China makes a 3 wheel car that seats 4 and is a 4 door.India makes ans Selle's 3 wheel cars
that gets over 50 miles Gal.

Answer
Given that the internal combustion engine is so inefficient, even the most efficient lose more energy in radiation (heat) than they transfer to the back wheel, I think the next major step will be in electric motors with the advent of light(er)weight batteries. Of course these are not necessarily more environmentally friendly â creating the electricity creates greenhouse gases, even manufacturing the batteries is a dirty industry â but they have instant huge torque, have few moving parts, are reliable and simple, and can use forward movement and braking to claw back some charge. Would increasing the number of wheels or seats improve motorcycles? In many cases the compromise will enlarge the bike so much that it loses many of its advantages especially in towns.

Trying to decide between a 1972 Norton Commando and a 1969 triumph Trophy?

best buy electric bikes uk on Orange Mini Moto
best buy electric bikes uk image

Dennis Gal

what are the pros and cons between them? Thanks!

Answer
Well done, excellent classic choices.

BUT either will require re-engineering, consider if U are up to it. They will have had numerous previous botching owners, think in terms of a full strip and re-build.

The Norton mark IIA 'bendy' (as you had it in the US) 850cc nominal was the best of the bunch, pre the electric non working start (so, much lighter), the Trumpet '69 pre oil in frame was also the best of the crop, the single carb Trophy was the bees knees and actually went round corners (pre '65's didn't).

Both will kill you if the chassis isn't 100%, both will frustrate you if you don't love 'em.

Spares? You can build both from every nut bolt and washer now from stock, at a price, Norman Hyde (Triumph including racing parts) and Fair Spares or Norvil, all in the UK have every part - websites give details, downloadable parts lists etc. You can actually build either (for $$$$$) from scratch, using retail spares off the shelf. You can buy a new Norton from Fair Spares with modern materials for around $15000 plus shipping. I personally would sooner have Kenny Dyer's prototype and sort it........

I donated a Mk IIA to a chum (as I hate him, three years on he is still trying to re-assemle it) Friend of mine had a '68 TR6 (late relative of the Trophy) and it is worth a lot now, prettiest bike I ever saw, but required experienced blueprinting with modern spares to make it right. Here in UK it is $8000 in 'as seen' condition.

With these bikes, everything depends on previous owner's attitude. Join the owners' clubs, talk to the guys who run them, buy from within the club. Don't forget they are lawn-mower technology stretched to record breaking levels by a dying industry

If the bike is say $ 5000 for a cranky 'going concern', reckon on another at least $6000 for rebuilding it, but it is as stated, entirely possible mail order - everything for both models is now off the shelf, more so than when they were made even, at a price. Forget your man-hours - three winters at least!

Hope you do it, though, another piece of history resurrected.

The Norton is the most comfy long distance, the Trumpet the most style; the rest is up to you.

PS having ridden the Norton in a state of calamity, and having seen the Trumpet in immaculate Dream Machine paint, I would choose the Trumpet as a toy and the Norton to cross continents on, bad as she was, we made a European tour on her, albeit, only just. Be realistic buddy.

What are some effective but easy ways people can save energy?

Answer
Monitor your electricity use by buying a Kill-A-Watt or other such monitor.

http://the-gadgeteer.com/review/kill_a_watt_electric_usage_monitor_review

'An average household uses about 4300kWh of electricity each year. This results in emissions of over 2 tonnes of CO2 per household, or ¾ tonne per person - just for domestic electricity supply. In comparison, total CO2 emissions per person in the UK are around 10 tonnes, and emissions per person in India are about 1 tonne. Luckily, it is possible to cut domestic electricity use in half with simple energy efficiency measures.
'This table shows how electricity use is divided up in an average house (excluding electric heating):

Lighting 19%
Cold Appliances 18%
Wet Appliancs 15%
Cooking 15%
Consumer Electronics 19%
ICT (computers, etc) 9%
Other 5%'

â Wash full loads.
â Wash at lower temperatures.
â Dry washing outside.
â Avoid dishwashers.
â Reduce draughts.

Use rechargeable batteries..
â Donât leave (re)chargers on for longer than is needed
â Only boil the water you need.
â Buy local produce.
â Reduce reuse and recycle - in that order
â Work from home. If possible work from home, it saves time and fuel travelling.
â Eat less meat and dairy products. Modern farming methods produce large quantities of greenhouse gases.
â Shower instead of bath.
â Conserve Water The less water you use the less energy is needed to pump it to your home or office and to deal with the waste at a sewerage treatment works.

â Drive a fuel efficient vehicle, if you have more than one vehicle use the most economical one more often.
â Walk or cycle to work or when taking the kids to schools, if you have to drive consider car sharing.
â Use public transport where possible
â Take a coach or train instead of using domestic flights.
â When replacing your vehicle look at diesel and liquid petroleum gas models.
â Combine multiple journeys into one and do your weekly shopping in a single trip.
â Stagger journeys where possible to avoid rush hour traffic and hold ups.
â Avoid harsh braking, accelerate gently, drive at a steady speed.
â Keep tyres properly inflated.
â Remove bike and ski and roof racks when not in use.
â Carrying unnecessary weight wastes fuel, declutter your vehicle.

Jasmine

I have no idea where to even start when buying a dirt bike. I am smallish and definately can't use a big bike. I have never ridden one before so I don't need anything too special. I hope you can help!

Answer
pmk is dead on with that one. Go sit on a CRF150F and a CRF230F to see which is a better fit. Then if you don't want to buy a new one, search cycletrader.com for a used one in your area and price range. I have ridden the 150 and owned the 230, both are super fun easy to ride bikes. All of the 230 year models have electric start and the 2008 150 also has it. I think previous 150's were kick start only.

What do I need to do and what should I know about moving out?

best electric bikes of 2013 on Your lipstick probably has lead in it | Grist
best electric bikes of 2013 image

Danny

I'm 19. I'm living with my parents. I don't go to college. I make about $180 a week from my job. I desperately want to move out within the next few months. When I do move, I'll probably want to go to another state. I don't have my license until June 15th or so (it was suspended). Even when that happens, I don't have a car I could legally take to move with me as the one I use is in my dad's name. Basically, I'm wondering what I need to do and actually take action on. I'm also asking for any knowledge I should have going through this. Any tips. That sort of thing.

I know I'll need money. I've barely started saving but it's happening.. slowly. I can wait on getting a car if it's someplace I don't necessarily need one. I could use other modes like taking the bus or biking. Or walking, if I'm in a city.

Something big that I have no idea about is health care and insurance and all that. Any information for someone who knows nothing would be great.

Sorry this is so scattered and disorganized. I'm just trying to figure out exactly what I need and what I need to do to move out. I'm tired of my living circumstances and I need to be around non-stressful people who can understand me, and I can understand them. I can't do that here, so I'm trying to change what I can. This is mainly aimed at people who have moved away from their parents, without the help of their parents. But any help at all is appreciated. Thank you.

Answer
Well, first let me congratulate you on your employment. It's not much, but it shows initiative.

First thing I would advise you to do (besides saving every penny you can) would be to get a job in the area in which you want to live! Do you currently work for a company where you could transfer to another one of their facilities? You may have to actually formally apply, and then show up for an interview, but with the economy the way it is, going into an unknown situation while unemployed is (or should be) a scary idea!

Do you have relatives or friends who currently live in an area where you'd want to relocate to? Having a safety net is a really good thing!

I wouldn't count on getting a place with an incredible walk score. Cost of living in cities with great public transportation are expensive. And on your budget, you'll probably have to look for something cheaper a little further out. And that is going to require a car. I'd also like to hedge a guess and say, no more underage drinking, k? :-) If you want to move out and live on your own, a valid license is mandatory. And lets think a head a little bit. What you do to your record AND credit rating now is going to be oh sooooo much more important to you ten years from now. So HUGE piece of advise here. Dont screw up your credit rating!

Now lets talk housing. You'll need a good credit rating for this. Landlords check all 3 credit bureaus now days. You'll also need proof of employment with a wage sufficient to satisfy the landlords requirement. Although they are talking about Boston, this theory holds true anywhere these days. http://charlesgaterealty.com/2013/renting-advice/how-much-can-i-afford-in-rent-each-month/ Don't forget, just to get into a place you'll need first months rent, last months rent, a security deposit, and some landlords also request key deposits, garage door opener deposits, pet deposits, etc. Then there are the utilities. Between electric, heat, water, sewer, garbage, internet, phone, and whatever else it can easily be equal to rent. Some landlords may include things like elec, water, sewer, garbage and you may get lucky and find one with heat included too. But you're still going to have to cover phone, cable and internet. Basically, what I'm saying is; in the DC/MD/VA area you're not going to find much for $720 month.

Health care. That comes with a real job. Not usually when your working at McDonalds (although I could be wrong - never worked there!)

Now. With ALL THAT SAID! What I'd like to see you do is take that $180 week and march your butt down to your nearest community college and sign yourself up. If you cannot do that, then turn around and head over to your nearest Recruiters office and cross your fingers they'll take ya!

Good Luck in your future endeavors.

when do the 2013 dirt bikes come out?

Linda

im looking to get a new 250 dirt bike and i want to know when the 2013s come out. I am looking at honda, kawasaki, suzuki, ktm, yamaha...all the major brands.

Answer
All the bikes come out the same time, around the end of 2012. All the bikes are very similar, you're going to have to ride each of the bikes to find your preference.

KTM is way too much money, currency between Austria and the US isn't good. Yamaha is too advanced, their 2013 models are going to look like a futuristic robot, and it might even have electric start, which adds around 20 lbs.

Kawasaki is great as the 2012 model almost dominates the other bikes. I prefer the Suzuki, but it's all rider preference. Suzuki isn't over designed, it's the best bike in my opinion. Next years bikes could go from $8,000, but the KTMs... (Keep Throwing Money). Could go up to $10,000.

Child trailer with an electric bike?

Can you attach a child trailer to an electric bike? Or a scooter? I'm trying to find something for me and my son, who is four and 40 lbs, that will work with me. I have been walking the 3.5 miles for the last month and just want to find something that will cut down my time. I just think using a regular bike with a trailer will be too much and I will be stuck pushing the bike with the trailer up hills. I've also found child carriers, look very similar to car seats, that can be attached as well. Can those be used? They are actually on the bike, not trailing behind

Answer
Think you're bogging down now on a bike you pedal yourself? It'll be worse with the added weight of an electric assist bicycle. Learn how & when to shift gears. Learn about "spinning" the pedals at a high rpm or "cadence" in lower (easier) gears climbing hills. See links...

Questions about electric bike?

JK

Hi, I just got this electric bike second hand on craigslist - and it's working fine, but I have a few questions about it.

1. Do you remove batteries when you have the bike on the public bike rack to prevent theft? Or do you think that the lock mechanism is good enough to deter the theft? Of course I put U-shape lock on the bike body itself, but I wasn't sure what to do with the battery. It's removable, so for today, (first time out), I removed the battery and brought it with me to the office.

2. how long does this battery last? The previous owner told me she used the bike for two years. How do you know the battery is no good any more? She used it to climb up a hill (gradual, a short steep part, but not so terrible) daily about 1.5 miles. When should I consider getting new battery pack (and how much does it cost?)

3. Is there way to adjust the positioning of the switch to turn the power on because it's in a little awkward place to reach as of right now. (I like to turn it on and off to save battery as I climb up the hill).

Thanks!
to the first responder: I live in upstate NY and the town is full of hills. I dare you to climb the two large hills I just went down and climbed this morning. I'm a middle aged woman with shaky knees and I'm not going to put up with your nonsense. Perhaps you should think about what you say before you post it - and save some embarrassment. You won't dare say that to me in person.

to the second person: I want to turn it on and off because, if you've ever rode bike on a long hill, the incline is not even. Some parts are almost level, and I don't need the assist, but some other parts are steep, then I need assist.
And please only answer if you actually know anything about electric bike.
Also, this is the bike I got: http://www.giant-bicycles.com/en-us/bikes/model/twist.express/7335/44074/ I forgot to add this link in the initial post.

Answer
I would remove the battery. The battery life is determined by the type and the number of recharge cycles. If you turn it off to climb hills why bother with an electric bike. There is a good chance that you already need a new battery. The cost will depend on the type, Google is your friend.

Edit:
You replied without giving any more information about the bike. Most have a Controller that determines how much energy you use.

what is stopping people from just replacing a gas engine with an electric engine?

best electric bikes for hills image
Q. What is stopping people from just replacing a gas engine with an electric engine. I know a little bit about cars but not enough to know this answer. What makes an engine go from 8000 rpm or so down back to like 1 or 2 thousand rpm when you shift gears. Could you do the same thing with an electric engine?
Where would i be able to look at find motors with the type of power a car would call for?

Answer
If you want the equivalent of a golf cart, there are companies that will make the conversion for you. It will cost you thousands of dollars and you won't be able to go from L.A. to Anaheim on a charge.

The biggest barrier is batteries.

Gasoline has an energy density of about 46.19 Newton-Meters per kilogram (energy units per unit of weight).

A lead acid battery (the cheapest kind) comes in at 0.11 NM/Kg. That means it takes more than 400 times as much lead-acid battery to get as much energy as the same weight of gas.

The next generation of battery, the nickel-metal-hydride (NMh) they use in most hybrids, has a better energy density, but it's still only twice as dense as a lead acid, or 200 times more weight for the same energy as gasoline. On an energy per cubic centimeter basis, it's a lot better, but still takes 100 times as much space per unit of energy.

The newest batteries, used in laptops and the all-electric Tesla sports car, are lithium-ion. An experimental Japanese sedan, the Eliica, with eight wheel motors and lithium-ion batteries ran 230 mph a few years ago, but it cost a fortune, and we haven't heard from it since. These batteries have an energy density by weight three times that of an NMh, and 5 times by volume. So gasoline is only18 times as dense by volume. Still, imagine having to find room for 18 gas tanks in your car!

As to gears, you need gears for mechanical advantage (like a lever) to allow the engine to remain in its most efficient operating range at varying speeds.

Most gas engines do their best work between about 2,400 rpms and 5,000 rpms. A high performance engine's range will be higher, but they all need gears, or else they either couldn't get going from rest (geared too high) or would run out of breath before they reached freeway speed (geared too low).

If you ever rode a ten-speed bike, you'll know that you need low gears for going up hills and high gears to keep up with the pedals going down. Same with a car.

the Tesla now has only one gear. That's because an electric motor produces its maximum torque (the force to move the car) at zero rpms (from a dead stop). If you want one, they are taking deposits. They only cost around $100,000.

BTW, if you want to avoid sounding uninformed, technically the electric unit is called a "motor" while the internal combustion one is called an "engine." It's an engineering distinction.

Why doesnt the electric start on my motorcycle work?

jamminjake

It fires up if I push it down a hill and drop it in gear, but the electric start doesnt even attepmt to crank the engine. Its a 2003 lifan 250 and I have absolutly no idea where to start looking for a problem. However I did check the fuse inline with the starter, unfortunatly, it was fine. Any suggestions?

Answer
How old is the battery? Even if they are well cared for a motorcycle battery usually only lasts about 3 years. If the battery is more than 3 years old, maybe it's time for a new one.

Are you positive the battery has a full charge. Don't judge by the lights. They can deceive you.

A motorcycle battery in good condition will lose about 1% charge every day. It is also bad to let a motorcycle battery go below 50% charge. Letting the battery go below 50% charge and sulfation can happen. This is a condition where sulfur crystals from the sulfuric acid in the battery will form on the lead plates. When this happens the battery doesn't release the amount of energy it should and it will not accept a full charge like it should. They even make solar powered float chargers if a power source is not available.

Best to keep the battery fully charged in storage. If you intend to not use the bike for about 3 weeks or more connect a battery tender, sometimes called a float charger to the battery. This will maintain the battery at 100% charge without overcharging.

If you must use a battery charger charge at a rate of no more than 2 amps. Anything more than 2 amps will cause permanent damage to the battery.

Check the acid level in the battery. Motorcycle batteries are usually translucent with high and low acid level marks on the case. If needed, fill with distilled water only. Tap water contains minute amounts of minerals and chemicals that will harm your battery.

Make sure your battery terminal connections are clean and corrosion free. Clean with a wire brush. You can also use a mixture of baking soda and water.

Once you get the connections clean, put a little dielectric grease on the cable ends and terminals. This will prevent corrosion in the future.

what are some examples of sustainable practices and stewardship that can protect the environment?

Answer
In Your Home â Conserve Energy
Clean or replace air filters on your air conditioning unit at least once a month.
If you have central air conditioning, do not close vents in unused rooms.
Lower the thermostat on your water heater to 120.
Wrap your water heater in an insulated blanket.
Turn down or shut off your water heater when you will be away for extended periods.
Turn off unneeded lights even when leaving a room for a short time.
Set your refrigerator temperature at 36 to 38 and your freezer at 0 to 5 .
When using an oven, minimize door opening while it is in use; it reduces oven temperature by 25 to 30 every time you open the door.
Clean the lint filter in your dryer after every load so that it uses less energy.
Unplug seldom used appliances.
Use a microwave when- ever you can instead of a conventional oven or stove.
Wash clothes with warm or cold water instead of hot.
Reverse your indoor ceiling fans for summer and winter operations as recommended.
Turn off lights, computers and other appliances when not in use.
Purchase appliances and office equipment with the Energy Star Label; old refrigerators, for example, use up to 50 more electricity than newer models.
Only use electric appliances when you need them.
Use compact fluorescent light bulbs to save money and energy.
Keep your thermostat at 68 in winter and 78 in summer.
Keep your thermostat higher in summer and lower in winter when you are away
Insulate your home as best as you can.
Install weather stripping around all doors and windows.
Shut off electrical equipment in the evening when you leave work.
Plant trees to shade your home.
Shade outside air conditioning units by trees or other means.
Replace old windows with energy efficient ones.
Use cold water instead of warm or hot water when possible.
Connect your outdoor lights to a timer.
Buy green electricity - electricity produced by low - or even zero-pollution facilities (NC Green power for North Carolina - www.ncgreenpower.org). In your home-reduce toxicity.

In Your Home â Reduce Toxicity
Eliminate mercury from your home by purchasing items without mercury, and dispose of items containing mercury at an appropriate drop-off facility when necessary (e.g. old thermometers).
Learn about alternatives to household cleaning items that do not use hazardous chemicals.
Buy the right amount of paint for the job.
Review labels of household cleaners you use. Consider alternatives like baking soda, scouring pads, water or a little more elbow grease.
When no good alternatives exist to a toxic item, find the least amount required for an effective, sanitary result.
If you have an older home, have paint in your home tested for lead. If you have lead-based paint, cover it with wall paper or other material instead of sanding it or burning it off.
Use traps instead of rat and mouse poisons and insect killers.
Have your home tested for radon.
Use cedar chips or aromatic herbs instead of mothballs.

Ways To Protect Our Air

Ask your employer to consider flexible work schedules or telecommuting.
Recycle printer cartridges.
Shut off electrical equipment in the evening when you leave work.
Report smoking vehicles to your local air agency.
Don't use your wood stove or fireplace when air quality is poor.
Avoid slow-burning, smoldering fires. They produce the largest amount of pollution.
Burn seasoned wood - it burns cleaner than green wood.
Use solar power for home and water heating.
Use loco or water-based paints, stains, finishes and paint strippers.
Purchase radial tires and keep them properly inflated for your vehicle.
Paint with brushes or rollers instead of using spray paints to minimize harmful emissions.
Ignite charcoal barbecues with an electric probe or other alternative to lighter fluid.
If you use a wood stove, use one sold after 1990. They are required to meet federal emissions standards and are more efficient and cleaner burning.
Walk or ride your bike instead of driving, whenever possible.
Join a carpool or van pool to get to work.

Ways to Protect Our Water

Re vegetate or mulch disturbed soil as soon as possible.
Never dump anything down a storm drain.
Have your septic tank pumped and system inspected regularly.
Check your car for oil or other leaks, and recycle motor oil.
Take your car to a car wash instead of washing it in the driveway.
Learn about your watershed.

The 206 page report encompassing over 70 brands gives forecasts of sales numbers, unit prices and total market value for 2011-2021. 13 market drivers are balanced against many negative factors that are discussed in the report, which has 69 figures and tables and detail on standards and legislation.

LEVs are one of the largest and fastest growing electric vehicle markets. A Light Electric Vehicle LEV is a land vehicle propelled by an electric motor that uses an energy storage device such as a battery or fuel cell, has two or three wheels, and typically weighs less than 100kg. Most LEVs are and will remain ebikes. These are Power on Demand bikes controlled with a throttle. A significant percentage of ebikes sold are scooters in that they have the driver's feet rest on a platform - they are not straddled by the driver.

Today, the LEV industry is dominated by large bicycle companies, due to their access to distribution. We explain why, in the future, these companies will face major competition from, and may be pushed aside by car, motorcycle, and car parts companies. Supply chains for motors, batteries, chassis parts, and nearly every LEV component exist in Asia, primarily in China, Taiwan, Japan, and newly emerging South Korea. We reveal where the highest profits will be obtained in future and the opportunities in components as these change with lithium-ion batteries of several generations and supercapacitors being increasingly employed, for example. The more demanding future technical requirements of users and standards are investigated.

Adjoining sectors are also discussed such as heavy electric motorcycles and the bigger sector of mobility vehicles for the disabled, where ten year forecasts are presented. New crossover vehicles between LEVs and these sectors are presented.

I have a suspended license from a DUI. However I need to get to work. do you need a license to ride an electric bike, scooter, or electric cycle?
this scooter is 600 watts and has pedels

Answer
Well, this is kind of a complicated answer ... yes, you can and no, you can't. A lot of it depends on several factors. If the scooter you are planning on using is a "sit-down" model with any kind of engine that can go over 15 mph then you would need to license it with the DMV, and you would need a class M1 drivers license. If its the kind of scooter you normally use your foot to propel (like the kind my 8 year old niece uses), but it has a small electric motor to help with inclines then no, you wouldn't need a license. The same goes for electric cycles ... if it is considered the primary means of power then you would need to license it as "street legal," and have a proper drivers license. Bicycles with small electric motors (below 10 CC's) are not considered differnt from regular bicycles. Then there is also the situation of powered wheelchairs and those "hoverround" scooters old people use to get around -- those do not require a license, but then again they don't go very fast either.

As a general rule of thumb if you have to ask yourself if you need a license to operate something chances are you do ... it should be self-evident what you don't need a license to drive. And, if there is a placard in which to place a license plate then the answer should be obvious.

You could always get a Segway ...

Edit: A 600 Watt scooter would be classified as a "motorized" vehicle ... they can travel up to 25 mph, and the electrical motor is considered the primary mode of operation. You'd be fine using it to ride around the neighborhood, but if you try using it to commute long distances you might get in trouble. You wouldn't be cited for driving without a license (per se) but operating an unlicensed vehicle. Since it is a motorized vehicle you cannot use it on sidewalks or bike lanes, and since it cannot go over 45 mph you cannot use it on roads either ...

1984-6 VF700F Honda Interceptor for commuting and touring?

Dylan R

The bike may need a little work but I was wondering if this bike would be suitable for commuting and touring. I am planning on using this bike for commuting to work and then this summer to do a little tour. After this tour I may also try doing the electric conversion, but my question is if this bike is suitable for commuting to work and for touring.

Thanks, for any answers, insight, or suggestions that you can give me.

Answer
It is capable of commuting and touring. "Suitable" depends on whether or not if the particular bike is reliable. You says it needs a little work -- cosmetics? Or it is something that will strand you 50 miles in the middle of nowhere?

Which type of Exercise Bike is the best?

I definitely prefer an upright bike over a recumbent one, simply because the latter is for lazy snobs. I've seen bikes with electronic controls and bikes with mechanical ones, and I wonder what type of features the electronic ones have? Which ones are more lasting and feel smoother?

Answer
electronic ones are a more high tech than manual ones of course.
the electronic ones, can set different resistance for you, and it has different types of workout plans digitally installed in its programs. It also tells your heart rate, distance, and speed.

Manual ones though, will hold up better over time, since they don't use all these fancy gadgets. Just pedal and go, and thats all about it.

I recommend getting an electric one if you can, but if you are on a budget, a manual one will do fine also.

Save for first car or go through with electric car build?

Alex King

I cannot decide if I want to wait one more year and get a car, or convert another car to electric like I had planned to do. I am afraid that if my dad and I buy the car for conversion, he will not be as willing to put in as much money for my first real car (we have already decided that he will help pay). Which way should I go?

Answer
What do you want to achieve? How much budget do you have? What sort of driving do you do?

If most of your journeys are long distance, or high speed, then forget electric cars right now: they're not the right power source for the job. If most of your journeys are short and on slower roads, then an electric car is in its ideal environment.

If you are converting a car, you'll probably end up with a car with a range of 40-60 miles and a top speed of 55-60mph (depending, of course, on what budget you have). You will end up with something that is unique, but it will probably be fairly slow.

If most of your driving is in a built up area, then that probably isn't an issue for you. In which case, you can go the self-build route if you want an electric car. If you are using new components, then budget $3-4000 for the conversion, on top of the price of the car: more if you want the latest lithium batteries (between you and me, don't go there: they're troublesome. Stick with lead acid batteries which are a lot easier to implement for a home conversion).

If you want a more practical car, that will have great performance and a decent range, you'll have to go the purchase route. Mitsubishi will have their 'i' electric car out in the US very shortly. I've used one in Europe for a year and it is a very good car. Nissan have their LEAF electric car out now, and again that is a superb car: in Europe, it won 'European Car of the Year' award, as voted by the top automotive journalists across Europe.

I've been driving various different electric cars over the past five years, and before that ran a company selling electric bikes. I am the author of 'The 2011 Electric Car Guide'.

What is the difference between a "bicycle working prototype" and a "bicycle market prototype"?

fsacuiu

For the same bicycle product/concept there are many production phases to be accomplished until a market product get alife. During these phases different prototypes are built if required.

Answer
There can be a lot of difference. A working prototype is often cobbled together by a mechanic. A market prototype is more refined , and is an element in test marketing.
I have had experience with building prototype bicycles, and I have a few photos to share:

This is Type 3, which has a fairing made of Kevlar (Dupont trademark aramid fiber) built in 1987:
http://i134.photobucket.com/albums/q119/hotbike/00000008-1.jpg

After testing it on people, other suggestions were taken into consideration. The next photo is of the Type 9, built in 1993, and made of fiberglass. The fairing is smaller because testing the larger fairing in Florida revealed that the riders got to hot, it blocked off air. Also, the newer fairing has a storage compartment big enough for 12 x 12ounce beverage cans. And the new design has the fairing mounted to the frame, not the handlebars, so it is much more stable. This bike cost $270.00 to build and sold (Dutch Auction) for $1,200.00.
http://i134.photobucket.com/albums/q119/hotbike/00000023-1.jpg

This photo is of the Type 7, which I did not sell. The fairing was designed by the same women who designed the Type 9:
http://i134.photobucket.com/albums/q119/hotbike/photo003.jpg

I skipped using the number eight, because , like a game of pool, I want the eightball to be last.

Since building these bikes , there has been a lot of electric bikes going into production in China, some 16 million per year. So I would like to cut my losses by bringing in bikes from China. Maybe I will continue to build my own on a one-time, custom basis, but the consumer is only concerned about cost.

im looking to get a new 250 dirt bike and i want to know when the 2013s come out.

Could go up to $10,000.

what engines are capable to run 100% on hho, h2, hydrogen gas for vehicles?

David Schw

Is there ideal engines for the conversion? I want to construct a van that holds enough hydrogen to operate 200 miles power day ++ and cover it with solar panels & a bracket to hold a1,500 watt windmill. Ideally,I would use an AC outlet to produce the hydrogen but with added options to make its own too. This is the ultimate bug out vehicle. I will probably wonder off into the wilderness forever once its complete.

Answer
Sounds like an interesting project. There are some car companies that make hydrogen internal combustion engines/cars but they are hugely expensive and conversions from gas to hydrogen has some problems. A propane engine design might be suitable for adaptation to hydrogen. The fuel/air mixture is much different for hydrogen requiring special carbs and engine timing changes and hydrogen embrittlement of engine parts or exhaust can lower engine life and other parts.
Storing hydrogen is another issue as it requires a large volume of gas under very high pressures to have a suitable range you're looking for.....special tanks, lines, valves, refueling, etc..

There are some new methods coming out to make on-demand low pressure hydrogen gas using chemical processes like sodium silicides or cobalt catalysts which could alleviate some of the problems with onboard storage/use. You can also make hydrogen from urine which has twice the hydrogen molecules as water and splits apart in electrolysis at lower voltages..

Q. I want to convert my current bike to an electric bike for less than $200. I'm really not that handy with electronics, but if some instruction to put A into B I can do it, I just wouldn't be able to figure out that A goes into B with out the instructions. Anyways, does anyone have some tips? All the sites that I've found are very unprofessional or non-specific so it's really hard to figure out anything from them. I would be willing to buy a kit.

Answer
An electric bike has to have a motor, controller, throttle, and battery pack.
Hub motors are the easiest to install.
overview:
You remove your old front wheel, put the new wheel where the old one was, align the wheel in the slots, adjust the brakes, secure the controller and the battery pack on the rear rack, put the throttle on the handle bars, route the wires safely and tie-wrap, connect the connectors together, turn every thing on and test.

To be of much use, you have to have at least 250watts, and hopefully more.

Largo scooters has a decent kit (go Hub)for $600 and is nice. Every once in a while you can find a WE or BD36 for maybe $350.

A Largo kit has keyed connectors so you cannot hook it up wrong.

So an electric bike whether violate local law?

Q. An electric bike with taillight and headlight that provided power not by battery but by moto mill. In other words, if the electric bike is running, the taillight and headlight will light. if the electric bike stop, they will be turn off. I want to know this device whether violate local law? After google a long time, but I can't find anything about that content.you'd batter give me a address about the content, thank you for replying.

Answer
contact the dept of motoe vehicles they will have answer if not them contact local police dept they will know since they would be the ones to issue ticket.

What do I need to do and what should I know about moving out?

Danny

How are you going to cope with higher fuel costs?

iamacarguy

I am looking into converting a car to electric, probably an electric car with an onboard alternator. I have taken steps to increase my fuel economy ie my driving habits, organizing my trips for running errands, making sure I have the correct air pressure (on the high end) in the tires, etc.

What are you doing?

Answer
To the first poster... It is cheaper to charge an electric car (both for you the consumer, and less pollution overall to generate the electricity). The cost of gasoline is more expensive compared to your electric bill to charge a car!!!

An electric car would be nice. An electric motorcycle would be even better (other than it would be heavy). A cruiser style would work well because they usually have a lower center of gravity by design.

What I'm doing...
All vehicle tires are pumped to max pressure (watching for tire wear issues, balding in the center).
Watch air filters closely.
Park in parking spots where I can pull through (so that I do not have to back out of the spot, less movement and idle time).
Slower cruising speeds. Running 80 consistantly in my truck I get 17-18. 75 = 18-19. Just did a 270mi trip runnin 70 and I got 21.5mpg. It will pay for itself over time, plus in the distance I drove, it cost me about 35min in travel time, but I had the time to spare...
i've been riding my motorcycle a lot when weather permits. I altered the final drive ratio by changing the sproket sizes (chain drive) and was able to gain 6mpg on my bike!

What are some everyday steps to reduce fossil fuel consumption?

jordan4391

Answer
1 - drive less (if you can walk, bike or take a bus/public transport there, do it)
2 - Check where your electricity comes from? If the plant that produces it is based off natural gas, burning coal, or anything other than nuclear or hydro-electric power (water running through a dam), then use less electricity by turning off the lights, setting the A/C to a higher temp, etc.
3 - Recycle! A lot of products are produced using fossil fuels (plastics, glass, etc)... Recycle your waste from what you consume!

I am thinking about getting a motorcycle instead of a car for college. The university I am going to has a very large, closed in campus which isnt quite walkable, so I wanted to get a bike to get around quickly and efficiently, as well as go to the store for groceries (ill just get saddle bags, not a big deal). It will also be used to drive around a large city (Seattle), and taken on the I-5 highway occassionally, but not often. I dont need or want my bike to be very fast, just enough for the highway.

The Kawasaki Ninja 250 is a solid contender for me, mostly because of its price and positive reviews. I definitely want either a sport or naked bike, preferably under $3-4k, so it fits the bill. It isnt very fast either, which is frankly a plus for me. Is the Ninja a good bike for my uses? ie: every day use, commute, convenience in daily life, city riding.

The biggest concern for me is cost. I know the bike itself it cheap enough, but how about the insurance? What would I expect to pay with the good grades discount, being 18-19 years old, college student? Also on a family plan most likely, so some discounts can be expected there.

Thanks alot, I hope someone has some answers for me :)

Answer
Yes, 250 or 300 both are the very good bikes and you don't be worry with the price difference. Compare the all specification and then you may be find which bike to choose. For insurance related query you can ask to your local agent.

Dirt bike question?!?

Amanda

I was wondering if anyone experienced in dirt bikes could help me out.

I am looking to buy a dirt bike but im not sure what one I should get.
I mostly want the back for track riding and not for trail riding. I am a female 5'1 and 100 pounds. I do not want to get a beginners bike but would rather have one I can keep for years to come. I do have a small amount of experience in riding. I was looking more towards a Yamaha but any brand could work.
I want a fast back with a good amount of power. Any help would be much appreciated.
Oh and im 19 almost 20 if that makes any difference.
What about something like a YZ 250F or YZ 250?? Not sure whats better though 2-stroke or 4.

Answer
The seat height on the YZ 125s and 250s will be too much for you. They are almost 40 inches. You will never be able to touch the ground. The ideal situation is sit on the seat and at least be able to touch your toes to the ground on both sides.

Check out the 2013 TTR125 LE 34" seat height, front disc brake, 4 stroke and electric start. Probably would work good for you.

I'm not looking for an electric bike, rather a rear-wheel conversion kit for a reasonably priced rear wheel conversion kit for a mountain bike which is available or ships to India.
