electric bike conversion kits?

snarf

hi gurus,
Does anyone have any recommendations on a reputable company that sells electric bike conversion kits? I've seen various companies on the web (amped bikes, go-hub, clean republic) but have no idea who is good vs. bad. Any guidance is much appreciated.

Answer
Guidance? Get on a real bicycle. The human body should be the motor.

know any Electric Bicycle kits from ebay can go at least 20mph?

Maverick

sellers are giving me strange details like 200rpm or 50kpm and I'm pretty sure the rpm was counted with out weight. Also what do you think would be the best battery?

Answer
Your speed on level ground with no pedaling will vary. If you have more than 750 watts power or go over 20mph then the bike is not an electric assist bicycle, but rather legally considered a motorcycle.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electric_bicycle_laws

The best battery is Lithium Iron Phosphate, but those will cost as much as the whole bike. The standard ebike comes with a sealed lead acid battery.

http://www.walmart.com/ip/eZip-Trailz-Electric-Bicycle/11988713

Is about $500 shipped to a store you choose for pickup. That is usually less exensive than doing a conversion yourself. The price for this bike has gone up a lot. I paid $375 for it 2 years ago.

How much is the cheapest electric bike cost in Canada (Vancouver)?

John F

Should i buy one in Canada or overseas?

Answer
Canada. heapest. dollar in a garage sale. But in stores it's aout 5 dollars. ost expensive...100 and more.

should i buy an xb-500 electric bike to got to work?

Evan R

Answer
Absolutely, (as long as you're within 15 miles from your work) - any time we can find something that will save the environment - I say, go for it! Plus they're pretty nice looking.
But I would first check your state motor vehicle laws before buying it just to be sure that you can drive it on the roads. Some states are funny about electric mopeds and scooters.
If you're in Canada (at least in Ontario) some electric bikes/scooters that have operating pedals don't even have to be registered.
Also, don't pay much over $650 (with shipping). This site has the best deals and shipping is low,

Are electric bikes noisy?

Hustler On

I was thinking of buying an electric bike, but I was wondering if they make any loud sounds that would distinct them from a regular bike. Thanks in advance.

Answer
Like anything it depends on the model and quality. None of them are what I would call loud though.
I've ridden some that are cheap and make significant whining noise, but again nothing remotely like a motorcycle or car..
Some of the better ones are nearly noiseless.
It really depends on the bike. Take the bike for a spin before buying. Don't bother with those from electronics stores. You can't test ride them and good luck getting any help after the sale.

whats a good old bike to for a beginer rider?

DespisesDi

i recently got my motorcycle license and ive been looking for a bike, i was thinking of getting an old bike from the years 1970 to 2005, any good recomendations would be highly appreciated.

Answer
It is great that you want to start off on a used bike. I own and restore old Hondas from the late '60s to late '70s. I just really like the old ones. There are lots of old Hondas out there. If you can, check Craigslist or some classified. A few tips for buying an old one.
1.) Make sure it runs. So many old ones are sold on promises of "just needs a battery/carb clean/fresh gas etc." You might have a costly project if it doesn't run. (If it runs badly, you might have a project for your repair shop...but not as expensive.)
2.) Try to get one that is complete and original. Two reasons. It will be easier to fix things if you can look at a schematic and see part numbers. It will make it more valuable when you go to resell it.
3.) Get one with electric start. If it has kick start also, all the better, but electric start will help you when you inevitably stall in traffic as you practice.
4.) There are more old Hondas than old bikes of the other brands for sale (in my area at least). There are new and used parts available for most old Hondas (more than the other brands). [Check websites like bike bandit and CMSNL.com before you buy one to see if it was a popular enough model to still have lots of parts for sale.]
In the 70's I would recommend a CB or CL 100cc to 360 cc. This website has a handy list according to engine size. http://www.motorera.com/honda/index.htm

Electric Motorbikes for kids?

Alex Sundb

I want to get a bike for my friend and he is 1 year younger than me (12) and i found razor motorcycles but they are pretty small. So please any good motorcycles that are road legal and are legal for kids that can fit a kid 5 feet?

Answer
There's no cheap electric bike that would fit you like it should. If you really want a bike, go with a gas powered. Like a Yamaha tt-r 125. Or of you don't want a actual dirtbike, a Baja db30 minibike is a great value. Check out my YouTube I have a modified Baja db30

best bang for your buck on a folding electrical bicycle.?

emilianos

I'm trying to buy a folding electric bicycle and there are not so many reviews on those? can anyone help me decide?
I'm currently comparing two specific electric folding bicycles, the reason I'm buying a folding one, is I need to take it with me on the NYC subway if I need to, the two bicycles are the Prodeco mariner ($899) and the other one is Cyclamatic $(699), the Prodeco comes with 2 years warranty, and the Cyclamatic comes with one year, the Prodeco is also lighter by few pounds. now if anyone can help me choose between these two, or even tell me about another one that I don't know about for $699 to $899 range that will be great, thanks

Answer
no
i wouldn;t expect much
range
weight
speed
power
cost
battery life
battery replacement cost

all will be disappointing

i am not a fan of either folding bikes or electric bikes
put both together, be ready for a sad spectacle

What is the best way to purchase a moped / electric scooter?

StraightBa

I have decided to buy a moped (or electric scooter) to use casually around my neighborhood (not for extremely long hauls).

Since I don't know much about mopeds, the only place I went to was vespa.com. Most of their options are extremely expensive. I'm looking to spend no more than $1,000.

I'm looking for recommendations about obtaining one. Are their other good companies besides vespa? Are their moped/dealer shops that I could visit locally to actually see the different options.

Should I go and test drive one, like I do with cars? Or is this something I should simply buy online (and go that route).

Any other things I should be looking for?

Answer
Mopeds have pedals, scooters have floorboards.
Vespas are scooters, expensive scooters. You can get around just as well on other brands like Kymco, Genuine, Piaggio, Yamaha, Sym, and Honda but you aren't going to get any of those new for $1000.
You might be able to get a Chinese scooter new for that but even that is doubtful since scooter prices have gone up quite a bit. Also from what I hear many of shops are out of scooters these days so you might want to call around to see who has what.
I read a good review on a Velocity electric scooter but I don't know the cost.
As far as mopeds you might call some bicycle stores and see if they carry electric bikes. I have never seen one in a scooter or motorcycle dealer.
You might be able to find something used on Craigslist.
Other things....
Check into what your local laws are for licensing. In CA we have to have a M2 license even for mopeds. Some states don't require anything for up to 50cc scooters.
Figure out how fast you will need to go before you buy something. Don't get a scooter that top ends at 30 when you have to get on roads where traffic goes 45.
If you want to get more info on drop ship (online) scooters check out the scootdawg forum. A lot of the people there own Chinese scooters and might be able to point you towards better brands and dealers.

What Are Good Things To Cook in a Camping Stove?

iClimb_199

I am going camping/rock climbing this weekend and I have a Jetboil Flash stove, I would like to know some good meals that you guys cook while camping. And some things that are not really expensive or things that I will have to carry a lot to make.
Thank you guys so much!

Answer
Anything you can cook at home you can cook in the wilds. Bread, cakes, stews, soups, Indian, Chinese, French, anything ...even casseroles....yup, casseroles in an oven.
The oven is a biscuit tin. Nice over a slow burning heap of cinders but a camping stove will do it. Bit pricey on fuel though.
You can bake potatoes round a heap of cinders too wrapped in foil. And meat and fish. Does great for that. Or dig a pit for them and build the fire over it.
Cover the foil-wrapped goodies with an inch or two of earth first to get an even heat.
Pit oven. Good for rabbits, pheasant, partridge, briskets.
You can serve a three course meal on silver trays if you take some silver trays.
Extreme silver service gourmet dining anyone? We've done the ironing.
On bikes.. http://www.oneinchpunch.net/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2007/08/extreme-ironing-05.jpg . ..
From a rope..http://hovanitz.com/images_scc/2003ExtremeIroning.jpg . . . . .

Gourmet meals are easy outdoors.
Camp near a trout stream so you can cool the wine in it. Nice for catching dinner too....coming up.
And you can cook three lots at once if you take a couple of disposable barbeques.
They pack inside the biscuit tin and you don't have to barbeque things on them.
Boil stuff, use a frying pan, or your biscuit tin oven.
Bake bread or a cake in it, roast beef, lamb, fish, rice pudding, soufles (stand it the other way up for that...soufles rise). Fresh apple pie or banana loaf.
Use half what's provided to burn if you want. Empty half of it out and use it later.
Bacon and French omelettes for breakfast with camp bread, and a sweet and sour fish for lunch freshly cooked. Put the roast in the oven so it's cooking while you get up the White Lady or Jacob's Ladder.

Very good for camping is a wok...do a stir fry or steam fish or vegetables in it on a trivet. Fierce heat from a camp stove is better for stir fries than an electric cooker at home...get the heat up the side. Get the wok hot all over, not just the base. Tumble stuff around and everywhere it touches the wok cooks it. Light airy fried rice...not stodgy stuff cooked on the wok base instead of flying all over a very hot wok.
And done in half the time.
At home I use a big petrol stove outside for stir fries....proper stuff then. The electric stove is rubbish for it.
Done in seconds..extreme wok from an expert... hot

See how quick this egg browns...30 seconds.
Hot wok...light and fluffy then like a French Omelette.

It's just the same on the top of Ben Macdui cooked on a camp stove turned up to full power...no difference.

Heather baked trout is very nice if you're near a trout stream in the mountains.
Run your fingers along the heather stems to clean the leaves off. Just the tops but you soon get a tray full.
Lay the trout over the bed of freshly picked heather tops on a tray and seal it with foil so you don't lose any juices. They keep the heather soft then.
When cooked remove the trout and keep them warm in the oven while you prepare the sauce.
Add the water from the veg and thicken the juices and softly roasted heather tops the quick way with cornflour or properly as a roux sauce....butter and flour required for that but worth the trouble.
Do the same for loin chops or a small shoulder of lamb or a brisket but large briskets are best done overnight in the pit oven. Whisky (no e) in the heather works wonders.
Just take a few herbs and spices in small pots for the exotic things and for flavouring soups and casseroles.
Done it for years on mountains, in deserts and rain forest.
And on boats.
Catch it cook it and eat it. All in twenty minutes. Fresh fish that.

Put a tarpaulin on the ground when darkness comes.
Light a paraffin pressure lamp and hang it centrally over the tarpaulin.
Go to sleep.
In the morning get the hot oil going.

Fold the tarpaulin so it's got a central channel and pour all the fallen insects that got burnt round the lamp into a wide woven bamboo pan...all 2lbs of them.
4lbs if the night guard remembered to pump the lamp up half way through the night.
That's a bucketful.

Pick through it to get bits of muck and leaves out.
Oil is smoking hot now so pour all the lovely clean insects into it.
Deep fry for one minute or until crisp.
Scoop out, drain, and allow to cool.
While cooling prepare the milk from dry powder.
Distribute the crispy fried insects amongst the breakfast bowls
Pour on milk and add sugar.

...softly softly catchee trouteee
Softly stroke it's belly....hardly touching it....ickle trouty goes all Hmmmm that's nice....ahhh....gone all sleepy...ahh hmmmm..Ssshhhh....you're not there...ssshhh.

I have a long question about global warming and I want long answers. Can you stand up to it?

kung_foo_k

OK, here goes. HOW!?!?!?!?! How can all of you people who get mad about other people polluting the world live with yourselves? Name one thing you have ever done to reduce global warming, and I'm not talking about getting a hybrid car or anything because just having a car of any kind pollutes, you just like to feel superior. I drive a SUV that gets 15 mpg, and I don't regret it. Yes, the world is getting hotter, yes, the polar ice caps are melting, but, I know everyone will scream at me for this, how do we know it isn't a natural thing? I'm not pretending to be an expert or anything, I don't know the first thing about carbon emmisions, but those scientists who say cows release more methane than cars are probably right. So I think this is all a natural process. I'm not saying it's good, hundreds of millions of people could die, but don't get all angry about it if you are hurting just as much as everyone else. So my question is: What are your thoughts and opinions on the subject?

Answer
Well that was a lot of questions, so I'll answer them one by one.

What I do to reduce my impact on global warming:

I bought a Prius which more than doubled my car's fuel efficiency. Yes it still pollutes, but a lot less. I also drive it as little as possible.

In order to do so, I also bought an electric scooter to commute to work on the winter, and I alternate between scooter and biking the rest of the year.

I own a small house and have upgraded it to make it as energy efficient as possible. For example, replacing all bulbs with CFLs, got an EnergyStar fridge, smart power strips (smart strips), turn the thermostat way down in winter and way up in summer (right now it's at 60 deg F), etc. etc. My home now uses less than one-third the US national household energy use.

I also try to teach people about the science behind global warming here on Yahoo Answers (I'll get to that later), support politicians who make the environment a top priority, etc. etc.

Basically I do whatever is within my means to reduce my global warming impact.

Cows:

Yes, livestock are responsible for more greenhouse gas emissions than cars worldwide, but not for the reason you think. Methane emissions from livestock account for 5% of anthropogenic (man-made) greenhouse gas emissions, whereas cars account for 9%. When you factor in things like land use change (using what used to be forest or grassland for cattle pasture), livestock account for 18% of anthropogenic GHG emissions.

http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=Ahj_9Ts6XCPlEPR8x0ZiSSPsy6IX?qid=20070904123859AAhh6Iw

This doesn't mean it's a natural process. The reason they're considered man-made emissions is that there wouldn't be huge herds of cattle roaming around if we weren't raising them for beef. So another thing I've done to reduce my global warming impact is to reduce my beef consumption.

http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AonFW47X2YQV0vuWYaDTed0jzKIX;_ylv=3?qid=20070905112410AAY1IqC

How we know it's not natural:

There are many basic scientific facts which can only be explained if the current global warming is being caused by an increased greenhouse effect due to carbon dioxide accumulating in the atmosphere from humans burning fossil fuels.

For example, the planet is warming as much or more during the night than day. If the warming were due to the Sun, the planet should warm a lot more during the day when the Sun has influence. Greenhouse gases trap heat all the time, so they warm the planet regardless of time of day. Another example is that the upper atmosphere is cooling because the greenhouse gases trap the heat in the lower atmosphere. If warming were due to the Sun, it would be warming all layers of the atmosphere.

http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AiYUrYRGadqG8IBJkxgXFDDty6IX;_ylv=3?qid=20071215102828AAxyWW6

We know it's warming, and we've measured how much:

http://www.epa.gov/climatechange/science/recenttc_triad.html

Scientists have a good idea how the Sun and the Earth's natural cycles and volcanoes and all those natural effects change the global climate, so they've gone back and checked to see if they could be responsible for the current global warming. What they found is:

Over the past 30 years, all solar effects on the global climate have been in the direction of (slight) cooling, not warming. This is during a very rapid period of global warming.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/6290228.stm
http://www.pubs.royalsoc.ac.uk/media/proceedings_a/rspa20071880.pdf

So the Sun certainly isn't a large factor in the current warming. They've also looked at natural cycles, and found that we should be in the middle of a cooling period right now.

"An often-cited 1980 study by Imbrie and Imbrie determined that 'Ignoring anthropogenic and other possible sources of variation acting at frequencies higher than one cycle per 19,000 years, this model predicts that the long-term cooling trend which began some 6,000 years ago will continue for the next 23,000 years.'"

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Milankovitch_cycle#The_future
http://www.sciencemag.org/cgi/content/abstract/207/4434/943

So it's definitely not the Earth's natural cycles. They looked at volcanoes, and found that

a) volcanoes cause more global cooling than warming, because the particles they emit block sunlight

b) humans emit over 150 times more CO2 than volcanoes annually

http://volcano.und.edu/vwdocs/Gases/man.html

So it's certainly not due to volcanoes. Then they looked at human greenhouse gas emissions. We know how much atmospheric CO2 concentrations have increased over the past 50 years:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Mauna_Loa_Carbon_Dioxide.png

And we know from isotope ratios that this increase is due entirely to human emissions from burning fossil fuels. We know how much of a greenhouse effect these gases like carbon dioxide have, and the increase we've seen is enough to have caused almost all of the warming we've seen over the past 30 years (about 80-90%). You can see a model of the various factors over the past century here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Climate_Change_Attribution.png

This is enough evidence to convince almost all climate scientists that humans are the primary cause of the current global warming.

Is a 2005-2006 kawasaki klx 125 a good dirt bike?

Tim

Im getting a klx 125 soon. Its either 05 or 06. I just didnt know if it was a good, fast dirt bike.

Answer
Hello,
I cannot answer about the performance of how fast or weight and handling.I can answer about the engine and mechanics of the bike.As you know it is Japanese made with pride and quality as good as any other Japanese bike like Honda Etc in my opinion because I am a certified mechanic and work mainly on all Japanese bikes. The 2006 model has only the kick start and some of these came only set up for dirt or meaning off road, make sure when you purchase you ask about the title in case it is or has been set up for the on road use.It has the mikuni carburetor with drum brakes front and back with cdi electronic ignition. The 2012 Klx 125 Kawasaki is a endure and off road bike meaning you can title the bike and drive it on the road legally or just use it off road your choice but it does come with all the federal regulated electronics like horn lights blinkers headlight and so on.It is a dual overhead cam putting out around 10.9 horsepower with fuel injection digital dc-cdi ignition meaning no carburetor or points to deal with and a 5 speed manual transmission electric start and kick start, twin caliper front brake system for exceptional braking a 1.85 gallon of fuel that will probably take you near 150 miles or more depending on how you drive it.The older model 2003 has all the same except it has a mikuni carburetor. The engines are your basic 4 stroke oil forced lubrication with a sinle piston and dual valves. These engines are bullet proof,I have worked on a few only to tune them up and install new rings and valve job.The top end is the only thing that really wears on the bike like all good Japanese bikes meaning after many miles of riding sometimes you have to install new rings and grind the valves to keep the horsepower up to where ir should be and a valve job with some new gaskets and your ready to put another several thousand miles on the bike. The parts are relatively inexpensive as well and very economical to maintain as a whole bike.It is a very nice bike to use on road and off.If you are a beginner rider then this bike would be for you because it is very easy to learn on easy to ride light in weight corners the road easily with excellent handling and braking power. You will not be disappointed if you purchase a Kawasaki klx 125,just remember to keep the oil changed at regular intervals along with the air cleaner filter fuel filter and you will have years of use with several thousand enjoyable inexpensive miles of riding.Good luck with your purchase and if you have anymore questions please ask and I'll answer them as I can. Please let us know your decision as I would like to know if you like the bike after your purchase.Take care ride safe and always wear a helmet.

kx250f or 2012 sxf250? opinions please?

I'm 19, 5'5 , 140lbs and im looking for a next dirtbike for trail riding but have troubles if i dump the bike getting on and starting it because of seat hight. its very fustrating. The bikes i have ridden are 1st-1982 mx175, 2nd- 2002 yz125, 3rd-2008 crf150rb, 4th- 2007 kx100. experienced seat hight trouble with yz 125 (seat hight-39in)
kx250f seat hight 37in and have considered shaving seat and lowering by forks but the new 2012 ktm sxf250 has electric start which would make things much easyer but seat hight is 39in as well. Not sure what too do or what would be the reasonable choice.

Answer
If your wanting to save some money and your stuck between the 2 id say the kawi. ktm's are the most spendy for sure (KTM = Kost Too Much.) Although I love mine but i ride woods and nothing else really. They do make a great bike but you'll be spending more... I'd also look into the CRF's if I were you. I had a CRF250f and LOVED it. As for the height problem.... You'll get more comfortable the more you ride and theres ways of lowering your rear shock and front forks but its kinda spendy. You could also cut some seat foam but i personally prefer a nice seat and not hard plastic.

Electric bicycle experiences?

Dana1981

I recently ordered an electric bicycle:

http://www.northerntool.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_6970_200333249_200333249?cm_sp=Customer%20driven-_-Recently%20Viewed-_-Product%20Page

for my commute to and from work. It's about 13 miles each way and takes me about an hour on my regular hybrid bike. Making this ride twice a day can wear me out by the end of the week, particularly since I often have to go against a stiff headwind. Plus it's gotten as hot as 108°F this summer during my ride home.

Basically I'd like to cut down on the time and work it takes to make this trip, while still getting exercise and minimizing my greenhouse gas emissions. I should be able to recharge the batteries at work, so that will prevent them from getting discharged much more than halfway. I did some research, and this particular bike seemed fine and is relatively very cheap.

So I was wondering if anyone with some electric bike experiences had any tips about electric bikes and biking.
Yes I'm planning on pedalling essentially the whole route. The electric motor is simply to make the pedalling easier and make the trip quicker.
Good tips 1x1, thanks.

Answer
I've sold many different kinds of electric bikes in the shop, and some are good and others are not so good. The batteries don't last long on the inexpensive ones, so take good care of it. Charge it exactly as long as they recommend, exactly as often as they recommend. The motors are usually pretty good, you probably won't have any problems with it. I'd try to get different tires, something like the Kenda Kwest, 26x1.5 would be good. It'll make the whole thing a little easier and faster than the inexpensive tires that come on the bike, and that's the whole point, right? Unless you're a pretty good mechanic, I'd also have a shop assemble the bike. If everything gets adjusted properly from the beginning, it'll last a lot longer.

Are cops stern with electric bike laws in NYC?

R-man

I'm planning to purchase one of those e-bikes/scooters. I know that they are illegal in NY but I really don't care. I just want to ask my fellow e-bikers how frequent do you get pulled over by the popo, are they even anal about this trivial law? And of course how much would it cost me if I was to receive a ticket for the violation?
By the way, I live the suburb areas in Queens. (bayside)

Answer
I run an Electric Bike Shop and have sold about 50 electric bikes to people in New York state. I have not heard a single thing from any of my customers about cops bothering them. This is always a question I get about the legality of electric bicycles in New York, but most electric bikes look just like regular bikes and no police ever bother with them, in fact there are a number of electric bike companies based in new york. electric bicycle question?

nitronorbe

i have some decent size 14.4 volt lithium batteries that i got from work and they are worth hundreds of dollars. i have a new 26 inch mountain bike and i thought it would be nice to convert it into an electric bicycle. does anyone know of the cheapest way to do this? i've been looking online at kits and stuff but it's pretty confusing and i don't know if 14.4 volts is enough or if i need to combine some batteries in series to make 28 volts. Also i know know if using 28 volts on 24 volt motors will damage the motor badly or not. Any advice is greatly appreciated. . Also i want a bigger motor with fast speed if possible.

Answer
I doubt very much that your mechanical and engineering skills are up to the job. All you have is some batteries. In order to build an electric bike you will have to design some kind of drive system, you need more than just a motor. You also have to design and build some kind of controller and a wiring harness to connect everything together. You also will have to build a holder for the batteries. Decent electric bikes sell for well over $1000 for good reason, the components are costly. Decent conversion kits can cost upwards of $1000 as well. There is no cheap way to do what you want to do, even if you had a complete machine shop, welding equipment and the knowledge to put everything together

walmart razor pocket bike?

my 5 yr old nephews bday is coming up and i want to get him a really cool gift, and was wondering how fast it would acturally go with a 45 lb person - 150 lbs., still 15mph? and for taller ppl is it harder, or uncomfortable to drive? also after the 45min of riding does it just cut off, or just starts going slower?

Answer
electric pocket bikes or the dirt bike lookin gones also don't even last 45 min. more like 20-30 because it all depends on terrain and weight, it'll only go 15mph and with a heavier person it'll go slower, 150 pound rider would make it go slower about 10mph, it's an electric motor it's not going to be the best for anything, the batterys take forever to charge also, it'll be a cool gift but they'll hate that they only get to ride it a short while.

Is the x9 pocket bike gas or electric?

Maada

Answer
Gas.

shawn, none of the X bikes can be made street legal. Carefully check your state laws.
Don't misinform people if you can help it.
Actual law in my state:
"265:123-a Operation Prohibited. â No person shall operate a pocket bike upon any way or allow a pocket bike owned by him or her to be operated upon any way. No pocket bike shall be issued a vehicle registration or certificate or title. "

And the guy who sells it must tell you so:
"265:123-b Disclosure to Purchaser. â Every seller of pocket bikes shall provide a written disclosure to buyers at the time of purchase that advises buyers that their existing insurance policies may not provide coverage for these devices and that they should contact their insurance agent or company to determine if coverage is provided. Such disclosure shall also advise buyers that the devices are not legal for operation upon public ways.

A pocket bike is a toy, not a real motorcycle, no matter how much it looks like one or how the advertising tries to deceive you. They ARE legal, legally toys.

I am looking for an electric bike for exercise for under $500. I want electric because my area is very hilly and I want to get exercise but I'm just not in shape enough to make it up the hills without some help. Ideas for the best in my price range?

Answer
Forget the electric bike they are hard to pedal and using the motor wont give you any exercise. If you want exercise get a used stationary bike off of Craig's list or better yet go to the local bike shop and get a good hybrid bike. It will take time to be able to climb hills, if you have to get off and walk.

Does anyone know anything about brushed motors for electric bikes?

Student

I have a crystalyte sparrow brushed motor and for some reason by electric bike isnt working. Could it be that the brushes are gone. I only had my motor kit for 1 year and i did not leave brushed motor in cold. Could it be controller or throttle. Thanks

Answer
Take two

There could be any number of problems. The battery the controller the throttle, the motor, a brake switch, the on switch or the wiring.

I would be checking for loose wires bad connections, and blown fuses in the controller first. Then the battery. Sometimes a bit of dirt can get jammed in the brush holder or bend it

If you can get it beside one that works try plugging in your bits to see which one/s don't work

The sparrow is a brushed motor. Try your place of purchase or contact these guys for spare parts or repairer. The problem could be anywhere so it could be cheap or expensive. You could get brushes from an auto electrician if stuck. (The auto electrician may be able to fix it)

Electric bicycle conversion kit vs electric bicycle?

PETER P

Considering purchasing an electric bike kit. My main objective is it must be inconspicuous(I don't think their legal in NY?) and be able to tackle a 3mile hill on a 10mile trip to where I could recharge it. I think the kit less conspisious with the battery pack consealed in a back pack over the rear fender or saddle bags?

Answer
Personally I don't care much for motorised bicycles unless dealing with disabilities. A fit rider can usually ride about as quickly and for longer distances.

A kit is usually a better option since the motor can be removed with reasonable ease. And you can still ride the bike with it off. There are many different types of kits. Friction drives. Hub motors and one's that utilise the drive chain.

The friction drives tend to wear out your tyres quickly. The hub motors are a bit expensive and do not run efficiently at all speeds. The drive chain type are quite efficient and work through your gears so are more flexible. These ones are claimed to be greater than 95% efficient.

I know of similar designs but I don't think they are available in the U.S.

Still they are better than a car.

Bicycle and Pedestrian laws in the State of New York

MOTORIZED BICYCLES
Section 2268. Motor-assisted vehicle. Notwithstanding any other provision of this chapter, a vehicle which is primarily designed to be propelled by human power shall not be entitled to registration as a limited use vehicle because of the addition of a motor. The commissioner shall determine whether any vehicle is primarily designed to be propelled by human power.

http://www.oginski-law.com/library/bicycle-and-pedestria.cfm

The commissioners discretion. Here is a proposed bill that seems to outline the guidelines .You would have to be unlucky to get booked if you follow these.

??????NOT PASSED YET ??????

Section 1 of the bill adds a new Section 102-c to the vehicle and traffic law, defining electric assisted bicycles as:

A bicycle with two or three wheels which has a saddle and fully operative pedals for human propulsion, and also has an electric motor.

However, the electric motor should not have a power output of more than one thousand watts, and should be incapable of propelling the device at a speed of more than twenty miles per hour on level ground. The electric motor should also be incapable of further increasing the speed of the device when human power alone is used to propel the device at or more than twenty miles per hour.

Section 2 adds an exception in section 125 of the vehicle and traffic law to the statutory definition of motor vehicle for electric assisted bicycles.

Section 3 adds a new section 1240 to the vehicle and traffic law, making the rules, regulations and provisions of the vehicle and traffic law applicable to bicycles applicable to electric assisted bicycles; makes the federal equipment and manufacturing requirements for bicycles or motor driven cycles applicable to electric assisted bicycles; and adds the following operational and safety requirements for electric assisted bicycles: electric motor disengagement criteria; all operators and passengers are required to wear bicycle helmets; and no-one under the age of 16 may operate or as a passenger on an electric assisted bicycle and establishes the civil fine and enforcement procedures for failure to wear a helmet.

Section 4 is the effective date.

Can anyone recommend an electric mini-bike?

DarkSerge5

I am newly interested in small recreational motor vehicles and am interested in purchasing a beginning minibike. I was looking at the Serengeti Badger 450, and wanted to try and find other bikes like it. Problem is, that seems to be the only electric one I came across with that look. Can anyone recommend to me any electric minibikes similar to the Badger and within the same price range?

Answer
Yamaha do an effective ( it works) electric bicycle, but it is pricy, however, it works and here in the UK it is being purchased.
Everything depends on the battery technology, which has a way to go yet.

I would wait about 5 years myself, then they could get good. Meantime, look at the Dutch diesel bikes this may be a better way to go

Motor-Assisted Bicycle Question?

Mary R

Can anyone out there tell me if they know of a motor-assisted bicycle (brand name and model) that would fit the following requirements;

* is fitted with pedals that are operable at all times to propel the bicycle;
* weighs not more than 121 lbs. (55 kilograms);
* has no hand or foot operated clutch or gearbox driven by the motor and transferring power to the driven wheel;
* has a piston displacement of not more that 20 cubic inches (50 cubic centimetres); and,
* does not attain a speed greater than 31 mph (50 km/hr) on level ground within a distance of 1.24 Miles (2 km) from a standing start.

Thank you in advance to anyone who can give me an answer.

Answer
My dad used to have something like this (they're called mopeds and are rare, haveing been superseeded by the motor scooter). It had a 1 cylinder 2 stroke air cooled engine with a centrafugal clutch and IV (Infinately Variable) gearbox (effectively a simple automatic gearbox).

You won't find anything like that that doesn't need a lot of TLC to keep it going though.

Far more common nowadays are electrically assisted bikes (using an electric motor and batteries).

What is riding one of the electric power assist bicycles like?

Q. The only thing I've heard is that they even out hills a little. What else have you heard? Are they worth the high price?

Answer
You can buy a nice shop quality bike for the same price as a cheap electric bike. You will benefit from the exercise and be a lot healthier. Don't expect the batteries to last long on the cheap bikes so you end up with a 70 lb bicycle or ending up pedaling harder then a regular bike. Expect to buy a new battery pack every 6 months or so.

What's your opinion about the electric car?

donutdan41

I was thinking about it today, and I find it to be a real shame that the US hasn't really adopted the electric car yet. What scares me most, is that the US is pushing for the hydrogen car, even though the technology for the electric car is much more promising...
So, would you buy one if it cost the exact same price as a normal car, assuming that it can only go 60 miles on a single charge, takes 8 hours to charge, and let's say it has tires that never need to be changed?

Answer
Quiet, smooth, smell free,, refuel at home or work, low maintenance,
yes I have bought one (an old fashioned conversion) http://www.batteryvehiclesociety.org.uk/

Moden batteries will give a range of 200 miles http://www.teslamotors.com and out perform a ferrari
and can be recharged in 10 minutes http://www.phonixmotorcars.com

and the batteries will last 20 years and are fully recyclable (unlike most of an infernal combustion engine)

And even if you don't have your own home generator, well to wheel electric is stilll more efficient & less polluting because large generators using unrefined fuel, close to source, constantly monitored & maintained , running at optimm load & temperature, & distributed via a 90% efficient grid, then electric motors give max torque from 0rpm from cold, plus regenerative braking & no consumption when idle.

But driving an electric car is just a much more pleasent, fun & strees free experience than an old clunky infernal combustion fossil.

The tyres still wear out though, and require about 8 gallons of oil to make. (the higher torque/acceleration could even mean that you could wear them out faster if you want to drive fast) see the drag bike burn outs at http://www.killacycle.com

How much would it cost to get a moped?

Richiboi

I'm 16, live in the UK and want to get a moped. How much would this cost?

So far I've found four main costs

1)The Moped itself
2)Driving lessons/test
3)Helmet and gloves
4)Insurance

Can anyone give me some average prices for these things?

Answer
In the U.K the best price to get yourself a descent moped (50cc) is around £650!

My CBT (Moped Training) took one day from 9am untill 3pm and it cost me £120 but the prices range from roughly £90 to £130... The test is very easy though, provided you do it on a automatic and not a manual!

Helmet will cost you £50 but i dont know anyone who wears motorcycle gloves on a moped cause it looks kind of cheesy, you know wearing a motorcycle costume on a little scooter!

Insurance costs me £28 a month on third party (the cover only the other driver and not you) and fully comp was about £60... The cheapest third party insurance company for me was motorcycles direct.

Also when you buy your bike do a few checks:
>If its liquid cooled, take the cap off the coolant tank and smell it; if it smells like exhaust fumes, the gasket is gone
>Check the frame numbers, on my bike its on the bottom right hand side under the foot rests; and if the frame numbers looks welded in any way and not properly indented in there, the bike is most probably a ringer
>Check the electrics for example the electric start, indicators, lights etc.
>And if the suspension appears to be leaking oil then do not buy unless they are upright forks and u can get the fork seals changed

How do I open the Bell Radian Bike Light battery compartment?

I don't know how to replace the battery on my bike light. This is the exact one I have: http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/41rjekme6JL._SL500_AA300_.jpg

Answer
Take out the rubber stopper from thee back of the lights. Then hold down the button that has the battery and the three arrows on it while pulling out the light part of the bike lights.

How many hours will these bike lights last (see link)?

Scott

I had these lights fitted with the bike when I bought it. I was wondering how long the batteries will last.

Answer
Looks similar to the lights I have for my bike. About 180 hours in the flashing mode. Half that long in the steady mode. I've replaced the AA batteries once in the headlight because I keep that on steady all the time. The rear light is still on the original factory batteries.

Don't believe me? bring a mechanic, everything works perfect, but timing is off, its a 1 hour job at any motorcycle shop.

Title is in my name and is registered for 2013 till decemberThe bike fires up real quick with electric starter, even in cold weather. runs in top shape, feels like it's brand new.It was my daily runner until i upgraded. I wouldn't hesitate to take this bike cross country, it rides great.new batterycleaned carbnew sparkplugsnew oilnew top end rebuild (piston, cylinder head, plugs, valve job)barely used tires, still have PLENTY of life leftIt has custom body work and gas tank, although the gas tank has a small spot that needs new paint, by the gas cap see picsit gets 75mpg and goes easily 85mph with a 170lb rider29xxx miles on it, not a lot for an older bikegreat beginner bike, good for lane splitting, one seater, always get looks while ridingstill has original blue plates

Answer
NO. Don't get me wrong, I love the old bikes. This guy knows SO MUCH about this bike, telling you it reassuringly, but he doesn't know how to call a tow truck or a friend to get it somewhere to get it fixed. Don't buy from this guy and don't bother with anything that doesn't run. Unless, of course, you are doing it for the love of a particular bike and you want a big, expensive project.

Californians: do you agree with the liberals that run our state that we do not pay enough for gas?

Liberals don't care how much we pay for gas... They want us all to ride bikes, electric scooters, fly on magic carpets and whatever else liberals do. Gas prices suck and so does this state. Sick of this state and its controlling govt with high taxes to pay for more dumb programs and have them tell what I need and don't need. California needs to split 3 ways, north, south, and Bay Area. All the libs can stay in the bay and have their way, republicans up top, dems down below, everyone's happy and the libs aren't making legislature for anyone but themselves.

How is it balancing on a ezip 500 electric scooter?

I am looking for a scooter that doesn't require a license to just ride for recreation primarily and maybe getting to the shops by my house/library if I feel like it. Can anyone tell me how the balance is on one of these, both standing and sitting? I have not tried one yet or any electric scooter for that matter.

Additional info: 5' foot tall female, average weight.

Answer
Have not seen the 500 in action (Australia has these odd laws about electric bikes/scooters, nothing over 200w is allowed, anything above this is classed as a motor bike requiring a license and registration)
But we do have the smaller brothers of the 500 and they are quite good and pretty stable.
Looking at the images of the 500 it has it battery pack under the floor pan and sizable pneumatic wheels which all should add to it's ride quality.
It is made by Currie, a company with a long history of making electric bikes and scooters
http://www.ezipusa.com/13-ezip-e-500-.html
As with anything like this, range is dependent on the weight of the rider and the terrain (i.e. hills or the lack of them) the maximum range given for the 500 is 8 miles but that would be on the flat with the lightest possible rider, the real world number is usually less, say 5-6 as an optimistic guess, less if hills are in the equation. But 4-5 miles is still quite a good distance, I would certainly buy one of these if they were allowed here.

Which countries now have full-electric car technology besides China and Japan?

Q. BYD e6 electric full-size SUV: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BYD_e6

Nissan LEAF compact electric car: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nissan_Leaf

* Chevrolet Volt is not full-electric besides it needs gasoline as fuel.

Answer
It depends upon what you mean by "full-electric car technology" and by asking "which countries"...

Electric cars are not a national phenomena. They are things. National policies can promote electric cars but to my knowledge no country has nationalized an electric car building company and is producing electric cars on their own. Corporations may give some a feeling of national pride or identity but many corporations are multi national and may hold allegiance to no country.

Countries and areas that promote electric cars with incentives are more likely to attract corporations that are making electric cars. Such companies are in some ways not very different than other corporations. If an area will provide certain grants, property, utilities, or tax incentives then companies are more likely to build a plant in that location. Having cheap labor and reasonable lines of supply are also a plus. Selling their products may require a different set of incentives to attract buyers.

A case in point may be "Better Place." http://www.betterplace.com/ This company does not make cars. They sell a battery swapping service. They have several international initial target locations including: Israel, Denmark, Australia and Hawaii, San Francisco and Canada. The nissan leaf was to be a part of their system and may be in the future. For now they are swapping batteries on the Renault Fluence ZE. http://www.betterplace.com/ By some measure this might be considered a "full-electric car technology," but to what country are you going to attribute this technology? Shai Agassi, the companies founder and CEO has lived in California and Israel.

The Tesla Roadster is an American company and a media success. It is now selling their cars internationally, but the actual number of vehicles sold is presently just over 1000.1 Their are many lessor known electric vehicle companies that may happily sell you a vehicle that is hardly a production run. For a full production run of a full electric vehicle (BEV: battery electric vehicle) that is fully highway capable in the US we are looking to the Nissan Leaf as a first. Zap vehicles have been built in China for years and sold by an American Company internationally as motorcycles but we might not necessarily put these in the same class as the Nissan Leaf. The same may be true of other of the ess expensive Chinese cars.

I would agree that the Volt is not a "full electric" vehicle, but it is more electric than the more parallel hybrid prius. From a purist point of view perhaps even a BEV is not a pure electric vehicle as it uses chemistry in the batteries. A pure electric might use ultracapacitors for storage or something like this: http://electric-vehicles-cars-bikes.blogspot.com/2009/08/korean-researchers-develop-electric.html

Electric bike battery life?

vasu

For how many days electric bike batteries can work normally. What are the maintenance costs for that. In India is it registration for that.

Answer
It's not clear what you mean. There are 2 things:
1. How long the battery will run before recharging depends on its size, age & condition and how it is driven - the maker usually gives a figure for the bike's range (distance per charge), but this is an average based on a factory test. If the weather is very cold, if you drive faster or uphill, or with a heavy load, the distance will be shorter. If you drive more slowly, on level roads or downhill and are a small, light person the range will be more.
2. The lifetime of a battery depends on its type (lead-acid, lithium etc.) and how often it is charged/discharged. If a battery is stored in very hot conditions it will not last as long. Again the maker will advise the average lifetime.

Maintenance cost depends on a number of things:
1. If you charge the battery from mains electricity, the cost of charging. the easiest way to find this is to charge the battery ovenight and check your electricity meter, then you can calculate the cost.
If you have a solar panel or wind generator, the charging can be free but these chargers will cost you a lot of money to buy.
2. There will be other maintenance costs like servicing, new tyres and spare parts when the new ones wear out, you will only know these costs when you have used the bike for a long time, perhaps years.

What size dirt bike is good for me im 5,10 250 pounds?

Mark M

Looking for a trail bike not new to motorcycles but never rode a dirtbike

Answer
first off, I am 6'3" ~260 lbs and have been riding motorcycles for roughly 45 years, dirt mostly...

if you are looking for a less expensive trail bike, find a good used XR400 ('99-2004), 500 (82-85), 600 (mid 80s-mid 90s) that is in decent running shape.... don't worry so much about the normal wear parts like tires, chain, sprockets, brakes as those can all be upgraded and are readily available still. these bikes are bullet proof air cooled 4 stroke with all the latest (for their era) performance equipment with plenty of torque ... but they are very heavy (280-300 lbs). I owned probably 10 of these from '82 up thru the late '90s, they will not let you down and are great trail bike for a heavier rider.

other alternates would be a DRZ400 or KLX400 but might be a little more pricey (not much though).

others that are going to be a pretty good jump in price would be moving to a CRF450X or WR400 / 450 but these are newer models. also you might even look into the XR650 too.

then moving on up higher in price but well worth it are the KTM EXC (prior to 2007) models or the XC-W (2007 and later) models in either a 400 / 450cc or 520 / 525 / 530 but these all have the latest high performance aftermarket parts on the bike coming from the factory.

if you are looking for a good trails bike, stay away from the MX bikes as these were designed for high rpm track riding and will easily overheat at lower rpm on the trails, also have very small capacity oil and will be higher maintenance in the long run... this would be any of the bikes like CRF, YZF, KXF, RMZ, KTM SX... not to mention these are not designed for torque in pulling hills unless you have it rev'd up ...

if you want to go with a 2 stroke, something in the 250cc range like a CR, YZ, KX, RM and then merely play a little with sprocket gear ratios and the addition of a 9-14 oz flywheel weight to give you more rotational mass to increase the torque and make it not as peaky (tones the 2 stroke power band down)... also look at the KDX 200 /220 which is set up for enduro that already has the gearing & added weight from the factory (these are just a bit too short front to back for my height but alot of fun to ride).

another very good option is the CRF230 which is based on the XR line engine with an electric start but is limited in suspension & brake performance parts but it's a great little bike. I ride my daughters probably more than my KTM 525 EXC just due to it being a bit shorter seat height and makes it easier to get off and on when I am working cattle or running fence lines...

anyway, that should give you a pretty wide range of things to start looking for that would suite your size pretty well. find one that fits your price range and you will be set...

Suzuki drz400 dual purpose dirt bike using it for jumps?

Rynj

Is this bike too heavy for jumps? approx weight 350lbs bike plus 170 lbs rider , when I took a jump at 35km /p hour the nose end went down first hard landing for me , I know your suppose to land gradually back end to front , what can I do to this bike to lighten the weight or improve my jumping , besides speeding up and getting a smaller bike

Answer
It's too heavy, plus the suspension on the thing is pretty soft for it's weight. Only way to loose weight is to get rid of the headlight, battery, and electric starter.

It sounds like your suspension is really soft. I suggest you stiffen the compression and make the rebound faster. On most 4 strokes, the compression adjustment screw is on the top of each fork, and the rebound is on the bottom. It just takes a flat head screwdriver.

Would an electric moped scooter make it 75 miles without dying?

[Oris] [

I work at the United States Post Office and deliver mail to about 50 mailboxes a day on average. The mail route is about 72 miles a day total. Since I am only a part-time employee at the post office, they don't pay for my gas, thus, I end up spending about $200-$270 a month on it. I was seriously considering buying an electric moped scooter or something of the sort. However, how long can they go for before they need to be charged up again? Would the moped handle going about 72 miles Tuesday - Friday? Also, I deliver in a place with winding roads and two very steep hills, would it be able to go up them?

You have the best idea. Because there is no any kind of air pollution or sound pollution while using the electronic bikes, electronic motors. You can buy it from the bike showrooms. These kind of stuffs are rarely found in the present world. Best of luck.

Electric scooter or electric bike?

David

I would like to have an electric scooter or an electric bike. The scooters I like are the Ezip 500, and the Ezip 750. They both can go about 17mph with my weight. The ezip 500 only has an 8 mile range. The Ezip 750 has a 12 mile range but is more expensive. I am trying to decide if I might like an electric bike better(I'm a guy so i don't know if that might look wierd). It goes the same speed as the scooters and has a 15 mile range. I only will go on short 5 mile rides. I love how the scooters ride but the bike goes farther. Also I havn't ever riden an electric bike. I don't know any1 that has one. Which one would be easier to maintain. Are there any other electric vehicles UNDER 400$. Are there any other brands. What is best for me???

Answer
These guys specialise in electric bikes

The cheapest place I have seen hub motor kits is ebay $200-400 a retail one is more like 800-1000.

where can we get smart Li-Ion battery packd with power switch for our HID bike light?

sakura ish

Answer
I'd stick with the OEM replacement battery. Although maybe you could remove the old battery and read the battery labels carefully. It might be a standardized battery from the digi camera or video camera market.

Bad battery? I was riding my motorcycle when all of a sudden, no power or lights and...?

Sass

the batter smells almost like rotten eggs.
also when i turn the key to on the lights flicker (if they even come on) and it make a high pitch humming noise.
would you say this is a bad battery?

thanks!

Answer
The smell you are detecting is sulphuric acid gas cooking off from the battery. The lights flickering SOUNDS like loose cables. From the sounds of things, I am going on experience here, because I can't physically check out the bike, your battery cables are loose and vibrating when riding, also, it sounds like you have an old fashioned screw-top or (maintenance free) lead acid style battery. They are ancient history, out-dated junk technology.
Go get yourself a Factory HD battery or DEKA AGM battery---Absorbed Glass Mat (Deka, manufactured by East Penn Mfg, who is also the company that manufactures HD's batteries). They will come pre-charged and are totally sealed...EXTRA HEAVY DUTY that no other battery on the market compares to. You will also want to get a BATTERY TENDER, hook up the "pigtail" to the battery and plug it into the charger whenever you are not riding, it will maintain the battery for you and keep it fully charged at all times. NEVER USE A STANDARD TRICKLE CHARGER ON AN AGM BATTERY----IT WILL KILL IT!!!.....Use ONLY a Battery Tender!!! Agm batteries require a very special type of charging procedure that only a Battery Tender (or similar "float" charger) can provide. ALSO...NEVER load test an AGM battery...let a HARLEY DEALER do this for you, AGM's do not use the same load testing procedures as the old-style lead/acid batteries. Properly maintained, an AGM battery will last 4-6 years as compared to 1-2 years for old-style batteries, and they also have a higher Cold Cranking Amp rating.
Once you have a new, fresh battery installed, check your charging system output with a voltmeter on the battery terminals. At 2000 rpm and above, you should read around 14.2 volts. Any lower than 14, you have an issue with either your regulator, stator or rotor, or a combination of all three...this can get involved in repairing and recommend letting a shop do it. If the stator is bad, the primary drive must come off in order to replace it.

what is a good electric assist bicycle?

Rambo

Im kinda plump and find it hard to ride a reg bike, makes my legs/back hurt...anysuggestions?

Answer
There are no "good" electric assist bicycles. Th cost is astronomical, the price of battery replacement is also sky high & the charge in the battery may run low or OUT at the wrong time at the wrong place. Then you are stuck pedaling a VERY heavy bicycle home under your own power.

Please don't give me that "I'm kinda plump" routine either. I started out several years ago at 315 lbs. I also have degenerative disc disease in the lower back and arthritic knees. By using the proper cycling posture & "spinning" the pedals at a "cadence" of around 70-90 rpm (if not more) at all times, you can do it too. If I can - anybody can.

Trek Electric Assist Bicycles - lowest priced one - $2,299.99 - http://www.trekbikes.com/us/en/collections/electric_assist/models/

My 2011 Raleigh Touring Road Bike - cost - $1,200 - http://www.raleighusa.com/archive/2011-steel-road/sojourn-11/

Started off on a straight hybrid with the upright sitting/riding position. Switched to road bikes about a year ago. Love 'em!!! Today I rode 26 miles! Again...don't give me that "I'm kinda plump" routine. If I can get fit & shed pounds - anyone can. Links below from the late Sheldon Brown. Please read.

Answer
most pit bikes have 4 gears....

some of the descriptions on the power, exhaust, suspension, wheels are a bit weird.

like no manufacture would say the power is "Wheelies in 2nd and 3rd gear!!" unless there a joke.

but this does sound kinda legit but it does depend on the price$.

if it is under $1000 i would say that is okay. if its over that dont bother, go on ebay.

by the way pit bikes can get a bit boaring after a while. i suggest get a motocross bike.

Difference between regular bike and electric bike?

Cassandra

Also I wanna buy like the cruiser one. Is it okay for a 17 year old girl?

Answer
An electric bicycle is basically a smaller scooter its a regular bike with an small engine to assist riders but its a lot heavier than regular bicycles . Your not going to notice the weight while riding because the motor is doing most the work for you if you want the exercise factor get a road/hybrid bicycle or a thinned tires on a MTB shall do it .

Questions about electric bikes?

Robert Ful

1.) How long do they last before "burning out"
2.) How many miles can you typically travel on one without having to pedal?
3.) When going up a steep hill, is the bike powerful enough to move upward without having to pedal at all?

Answer
We will just use my Giant Lafree Lite as a sample"

1)How long do they last before "burning out"?
I am 230 lbs,and have ridden this bike 4K miles over 3 years and NO problems other than flat tires.

2.) How many miles can you typically travel on one without having to pedal? I have to pedal on this bike. I can go 30miles on this ebike designed in 2002 and costing $1300.

3.) When going up a steep hill, is the bike powerful enough to move upward without having to pedal at all?
Again, this ebike requires me to pedal, as you should on most ebikes. I have arthritis and asthma, but I can make it up a 7% hill at 7mph carrying 20lbs of groceries
