How can I raise enough money to buy this electric scooter?

redduke

I'm 13 and my birthday is in a week but the budget is only $50.00. I have some Friends in my neighborhood who have electric scooters and on every Saturday bring them to x-treme skateboard parks to jump them off ramps. They even play scooter tag in my neighborhood streets while I sit and watch. So, my question is, how can I raise enough money to buy this $400.00 scooter before school gets out in a month?

i know that sounds really stupid, but here's my thing: i'm really considering biking to work (in college, full time job, gas is out of hand) but obviously there's the sweaty issue. do you bike commuters all work where there's a shower in the building? why are you this lucky? or do you stop at a gym? i could stop at mine, but it's another 2 miles (down and up a hill) from there to my work. wouldn't that just negate my showering efforts?

Answer
Use an electric bike, over 20 thousand people use them for commuting to work in the USA.

Going to work Use just enough electric assist to prevent sweating.

On the way home, sweat all you want

What size of electric motor can carry someone?

umadbro

Whats the smallest motor that can probably move someone, for instance 49cc gas motor can move the bike and a person on it.

Can 1hp or 3 hp electric engine have enough power to move someone? Not on a bike necessarily

Answer
500 watts = 1/2 horsepower.

Electric mobility scooters and wheelchairs have about 1/2 horsepower motors.
Many recreational and commuter scooters also have 1/2 horsepower motors.

It's about gearing. You could easily use a 1/10 horsepower motor if you geared it to run a couple of miles per hour.

200 grand a day?

Actually the US Government could have given all of us a one billion dollars, and it still would have been cheaper than all the stimulus bills and job creation false starts we've seen now.

And 200 grand a day would be skimmed off with taxes, so it's more like 50 grand a day. I can still work with that.

I'd live like a king, that's for sure. Travel a lot, see interesting places, not the trendy tourist traps. Always wanted to drive across Australia's Outback. Go for a lengthy cruise because I love ships. I'd build my own speakers for every room, just because I would enjoy building them. I'd buy a 72 inch TV and use it as a computer monitor. I'd buy Alienware computers or Powermacs.

I'd have a nice house built, lots of big windows. I'd buy the road bike and mountain bike of my dreams. I'd buy the biggest SUV available.

I would also start some kind of self-sustaining charity. See a need and meet it ten or 20 fold. Does someone need to collect 100 blankets or winter coats, I'd meet it with 100 more. Or pay several families' heating bills for the entire winter, or keep them cool. I'd have the wiring torn out of poor peoples' homes and have it replaced with new up-to-date wiring, then add an air conditioners and pay their electric for the year.

I would also pledge to help my family, whatever they needed. Medical bills, the roof of their home was torn off in a storm, the entire plumbing or electrical in a house has to be replaced, things like that.

And no doubt, there would be new found friends and "family" I never knew I had!

Buying a scooter -2 options electric or gas?

best electric bike under 1500 on electric three wheel motorcycles, electric three wheel motorcycles ...
best electric bike under 1500 image

froggygeek

Hey I need help with a upcoming purchase I'm planning to make. I need a stand-up scooter to get to college/ back/ more every day next year. The state I live in does not permit a motorized bike/ moped ( or anything that is motorized with a seat) to be driven without a driver's or a motorcycle license- and I have neither.

I graduated early and because I'm going to college I have no money.. but because I don't need to pay for insurance on a car or motorcycle ( and I'm a young male so I'm glad ) I have managed to get a $1200 budget which is pretty fair I'd say.
----------------------------------------------
So I looked around online and found 2 respectable scooters - One is electric - On is petrol powered
and I would like to know which of these I should choose or if there is another option that would work better for me? -
The petrol version is a GoPed brand scooter - the GSr46R - Pretty fast 35 mph+ stock.. but because this is my little scooter, and like anyone with a car, I'm looking to tune it up.. and I have an arrangement that is just under 1200 dollars that will get this thing going upwards to 50+, of course I don't need that speed, but I figured if I'm spending this kinda money on a scooter, its gotta be nice, I also plan to use this as entertainment as well

The electric can be seen here - http://superscootersales.com/?wpsc-product=super-turbo-1000-lithium -
It took me quite a while to find a Lithium powered scooter for this price, and with this power... I refuse to get a Sealed Lead Acid battery because while I surely can do without the weight, and charging time.. the life span is what concerns me. This scooter company claims this thing will last upwards of 1000-1500 cycles which is pleasing... but with a top speed of (possibly) 32 mph its a little upsetting because again I don't need the speed for the general transportation, I would certainly use it if I could.

Pros & Cons of the Gas Scooter-
Pros first-
Name Brand, Well known, & Trusted Company (and site)
Speed - Tuned, I can ride this thing going (up to) 55 which may be illegal but I don't mind ;)
Life Span - Some Years, I will take care of it
Perfectly Priced & Customized

Cons
Noise - This is the reason these things are illegal in other states and I don't want that to happen here, because of me. Its louder with the expansion chamber I would apply but I've put many silencers and smoother mechanisms into the design I wish to buy (hopefully will help)
Gas/Oil - Surely Gas isn't a problem, I believe it gets about 60+ mpg and runs 21 miles per 1.5l tank.. which is good.. but its partially oil.. I'm not sure how much is used per tank, I haven't crunched the numbers but it may concern me if I need to buy specific oil every now and then just to use this thing- depends on how often
Electric---------
Pros
1000 watt Battery - Best you can get in a stock scooter
Lithium - Lasts Longer, Lighter, More powerful, Faster Charge
32 mph top speed - Great for electric .. Might be worth it
Rechargeable.. simplicity is nice :P
Silent - Perfect
Cons
Brand - Good Product Reviews & Customer Service - Not as known as GoPed
Stock- No customization/ personality :(
Speed - Good & Bad - can't decide - I just don't want to be disappointed . and I know I wont with the gas version

I know that's alot to read .. And if you did, you rock you'll definitely have a better answer ;D than others who didn't read this.

Answer
I'd say. Go for the electric. Because i think GSr46R has a 2 stroke engine. so it would be much nosier and will produce a lot of smoke. And a small scooter like that is not very stable when you reach 45-50

Where in Southern California should I move to?

lilmisspun

I currently live about 20 miles south of Seattle (WA), and I've finally decided that I would like to move down to Southern California. I live in a decent (but small - 500 sq ft) apartment that I pay $675 for per month (that includes a base price for water, sewage, and garbage). At my current job my salary prior to taxes is 25k annually (I'm only 19). So I live a pretty decent lifestyle; I go out to eat a lot, I'm able to shop and whatnot without going broke.

I'm looking to move to Southern California sometime within the next year or two, but I have no idea where would be a good fit for me. I want to live in the best weather possible - the warmer the better, and I want there to be plenty of shopping and eating options. Living near the beach would be a plus, but I understand that its also way more expensive. I need somewhere affordable yet safe for a young girl such as myself.

I have a car, but I'll be willing to purchase a bike once I'm there in order to save money on gas, so I'd like all the necessities (maybe even my new place of work) to be easily accessible via bike. I have a few possibilities for living situations that range from being by myself in a studio or one bedroom (alone, I don't really care which as I don't need much space), or sharing a two bedroom with a friend.

Because I'm not from California, I really don't know much about affordability and whatnot for the area. I've done a bit of searching around for the following cities as possibilities, but I'm open to anything in the general area of them: LA, San Diego, Hollywood, Oceanside, Long Beach, Pasadena, etc. I don't want to go north of LA. Suggestions please? The more detailed, the better.

Answer
Our wages in the LA area are not much more, if at all, compared to other cities where expenses are much less, and rents are half or less than in LA. But the cost of living in the Seattle area is similar to LA, except in housing. Except I don't know anyone in LA that can go out a lot to eat on $25,000 a year, it is literally a starving student budget here. Maybe the differences are wider than reported, or it's just the difference in housing costs. Our job situation here is very bad, find a job here before moving.

The low end for a studio in LA is $800, and you might not like what that gets you. You won't likely find a legit situation that is less expensive, the reason is that Section 8 vouchers (welfare housing help for the most needy) are for about $900 for a studio, and $1200 for a one bedroom. Of course, these apartments tend to be in the least desirable areas, so apartments in nice, safe areas cost more. There is a lot more inventory in ok areas for $1000 for a studio, and $1500 for a one bedroom, add $500 more for the Westside, and $500 on top of that for decent close to the beach. This is not for fancy apartments with lots of amenities. Rents are going up in LA. As people were foreclosed on, there is more competition for apartments.

Be careful, there are lots of scams, Google: Los Angeles rental scams, and rental scams.

Almost anywhere in the LA area you'll find everything you need, but it's so spread out. Hollywood is high crime and mostly scuzzy, and expensive for what it is. I grew up there, I love it, but I don't live there anymore. Pasadena has a wide variety of living options at ok prices, it's about 1/2 hour from the beach, more in traffic. You might look into Sierra Madre (adorable small town on the east border of north east Pasadena), South Pasadena (small town, safe, but can be expensive), LaCanada-Flintridge (not many apartments, safe area), La Crescenta-Montrose, and Glendale, too.

LA safety info: http://www.lalife.com
More info: http://projects.latimes.com/mapping-la/neighborhoods/

It is very dangerous to bike in LA, even walking is dangerous - even in the most upscale, safest, small town areas with a stroller. Ugh. Roommates = hassles. What are you going to do when they run up $300+ a month in electric bills over the summer for air conditioning, and expect you to pay half, when you would have been happy with $50 worth? When their friends eat/drink/use/steal your stuff?

You should wait until you're 21 to consider moving here, most landlords in LA don't like to rent to under 21's, too many problems with underage drinking, etc.

Good luck!

The bike may need a little work but I was wondering if this bike would be suitable for commuting and touring. I am planning on using this bike for commuting to work and then this summer to do a little tour. After this tour I may also try doing the electric conversion, but my question is if this bike is suitable for commuting to work and for touring.

Thanks, for any answers, insight, or suggestions that you can give me.

Answer
It is capable of commuting and touring. "Suitable" depends on whether or not if the particular bike is reliable. You says it needs a little work -- cosmetics? Or it is something that will strand you 50 miles in the middle of nowhere?

how do I build an electric motor for my bike?

Cookie

I want to make my bike electric, how can I do that? Sites would be great, pictures would also be awesome. Anything helps! Thanks!

Answer
I would suggest the excellent engineering text on the subject:
Electric Bicycles, A Guide to Design and Use - Morchin & Oman 2006

It covers the trade-offs between brush and brushless motors and has good graphs for determining the torque-speed characteristic based on the output of the motor.

Best conversion is probably to just buy a good hub motor from a place like ebikes and then consider how you will power it and if you want only an assist when pedaling or an all-electric option. If you have access to a simulation program like PSIM Simulation for power electronics and motor control that can take a lot of guess work out of the various non-linearities involved with the contol of motors especially if you are going to design your own electronics and do your own boards.

whats the difference between these types of bikes?

Mountain Bikes
Comfort & Cruisers
Road Bikes
Electric Bikes
Tandem Bikes

Im looking for a bike that i can just ride to and from school and go around town on which would be best and whats the difference between these bikes?

Answer
Mountain bikes are designed for off road trails. Many people buy mountain bikes & ride them strictly on the streets - dumb. Road bikes are designed for strictly the streets, designed to go fast, but usually not very comfortable. Electric bikes are designed for people that need a little extra help getting uphill. Tandem bikes are a bicycle built for two. Fun, but takes some practice before the 2 riders get into sync.

A cruiser is different than a comfort bike. It usually has but one gear, sometimes 3. Often called beach cruisers because that's where they originated...on the boardwalk of beaches to ride on flat land - not needing any gears.

Comfort & Hybrid bikes are similar. The main difference being a comfort bike usually has the traditional 26" tires. Hybrids have taller & thinner 700C tires that roll easier & go a bit faster. Hybrid bikes have become very popular because they are versatile. You sit in a comfortable upright position, have many gears to handle hills, yet can go slightly off road on trails of packed earth or finely crushed gravel/stone. With a hybrid, you're basically getting a combination of a road bike, a mountain bike & a comfort bike. The best of all three. That's what I ride & recommend for most people looking for an all around good bike.

Can I use many lithium Ion batteries and send them through a controller to an electric motor?

Johnny Fre

This is a complex question I know. I know little about electrical engineering but I want to build an electric bike. I could buy the same materials others have used but I'd like to use Lithium Ion Batteries. So can I connect wires from many bats to a standard controller and then to an electric motor? I assume I can, energy is energy, but what should I look out for. Has anyone tried this?

Answer
This is basically what they do for car batteries in hybrid motors, so yes, this is doable.

When I go to websites to look up dirt bikes it always has motocross bikes and off road bikes in different categories what is the difference between them?

Answer
A world of Difference: Racing/Trails
>motocross bikes are designed for speed, so have solid power, suspension, and have no extras that would incorporate weight.
>trail bikes or "enduros" are built for tackling technical trails and have a smoother ride. They are heavier than motocross bikes carying electric starters, headlites, and kickstands.
>both bikes may have the same displacement and look the same but are completely different................the trail bike on the track is a heavy watered down version of the motocross................and vise versa..........the motocross on technical trail is choked back to the point of stalling, and lacks some helpful equipment.
>I wouldnt take a trail bike to the track but i have ridden motocross bikes on technical trails, it is a challenge

Answer
Yes, you'll be fine. You can ride a super-ped if you like. The Piaggio MP3 variants.
The only 250cc 400cc or 500 cc bikes you can ride in the UK with only a normal car driving license, no bike license needed.
They are petrol/electric hybrid 3-wheel bikes with very good fuel economy, excellent road grip, tilting suspension on the two front wheels and a decent performance including a quoted 0 - 60mph in 5 seconds for the 500cc but some people have had reliability problems with them, and they are not cheap.

when do the 2013 dirt bikes come out?

Linda

im looking to get a new 250 dirt bike and i want to know when the 2013s come out. I am looking at honda, kawasaki, suzuki, ktm, yamaha...all the major brands.

Answer
All the bikes come out the same time, around the end of 2012. All the bikes are very similar, you're going to have to ride each of the bikes to find your preference.

KTM is way too much money, currency between Austria and the US isn't good. Yamaha is too advanced, their 2013 models are going to look like a futuristic robot, and it might even have electric start, which adds around 20 lbs.

Kawasaki is great as the 2012 model almost dominates the other bikes. I prefer the Suzuki, but it's all rider preference. Suzuki isn't over designed, it's the best bike in my opinion. Next years bikes could go from $8,000, but the KTMs... (Keep Throwing Money). Could go up to $10,000.

I am looking for an electric bike for exercise for under $500. I want electric because my area is very hilly and I want to get exercise but I'm just not in shape enough to make it up the hills without some help. Ideas for the best in my price range?

Answer
Forget the electric bike they are hard to pedal and using the motor wont give you any exercise. If you want exercise get a used stationary bike off of Craig's list or better yet go to the local bike shop and get a good hybrid bike. It will take time to be able to climb hills, if you have to get off and walk.

Why have ebikes, electric mopeds and electric scooters largely disappeared from North American cities?

the best electric bikes in india image

sally

Who is "killing" the Electric Bike (aka Electric Scooter) in US and Canada? Many retail shops have closed, from Boston to Vancouver. North American manufacturers (Nova Cruz, Wavecrest, Bionx, Egovehicles) have gone under or are selling much less than they did before.

In comparison, in most of Asia, sales of ebikes are surging? Is it the economy collapse? Is it government? Is it the big auto companies? Is it battery companies? Is it some other factor?

Answer
All these smaller vehicles are disappearing mainly because of our affluence. As all the household get affluent they do not want smaller bikes and cars and go for bigger ones. Also it creates a fashion and so the not so affluent also aim to buy it. In due course there is no takers and they die a natural death.
Take the case of China where a decade ago there were thousands of cycles in the main cities and now they are all replaced with bikes and cars. So is the case of India. Once it was having a lot of 100 cc bikes but now it is n the decline. So it is the life style and not the government or oil companies who are responsible for it.

Should I Buy A Electric Pit Bike Or Standard Kick Start Only Pit Bike?

A54D

I want to buy one of the following pit bikes as I am on a low budget and just want a pit bike for fun this summer, I like the electric start pit bike as it has a battery and I can add extras like lights and indicators to it, but it's engine looks like dirt and I don't know how it will perform, but the standard one looks like a better engine and it performs well as I had the same one a few years ago. Christine

I am looking for a bike light that is tough (against rain and hard use), doesn't need to be plugged in to recharge the batteries (because I'll be camping a lot) and is bright as hell. Any suggestions?

Answer
there will not be any light that is both bright and has a solar recharger
you will have to get those 2 separately somehow

i like the magicshine lights for brightness
availlable from dealextreme.com
geomangear.com

strangely, not at bike stores

==oh
i see i forgot the hub generator style lights
never have to recharge
but they cost ###$$$%$$$

and you can;t just move them to another bike fast
and they are heavy
but if you roll, you have light

only question is brightness

i;d consider another solution - *n ot riding at night!*
if you only do that occasionally, you could get by with less money devoted to this minor issue

Can anyone tell me what the battery life on this bike light is?

John

Halfords Super Bright LED Bike Lights.

I picked my bike up today and forgot to ask the management. They fitted the accessories for me as I bought them with the bike, but I have no manual for the lights etc.

Anyone know "roughly" how long the battery will last?
Thanks everyone, and Mick, I did google but couldn't find any information on the life of battery!

Didn't you already ask this? See link below...

Answer
That is cool! Good for him. Gas or electric?
I have built a few with lawn mower engines and Mongoose kick scooters. They are a blast.

I do not know about Canada, but in California any motorized scooter (has to have a scooter kick plate....place to stand up) that does not exceed 15mph may be ridden in the bike lane without a license.

Where in Canada can I buy a 28 inch motorcycle rim?

Ian

I need a rim only and can have it shipped or I can buy it in Toronto (where I live)
nope, i mean 28 inch. I have an electric road bike and want to upgrade the wheel strength.
Cool, didnt know I was asking for something that rediculous lol. guess ill have to go with a really strong bike rim.

Answer
Motorcycle rim or bicycle rim? you noted electric road bike and the ones I've seen locally are large bicycles. As a bicycle rim- the 28 inch is available for 2.25/2.50 wide tires and a Raleigh(?) rim width shows as use able for a 3 inch commercial tire. Trek has a 28 inch on the 'large' adult cruiser cycles and three wheelers. check Raleigh dealer for that size 'postal/police' rim meant for the hard users, commercial rough road users. 36 spokes needed about 10 gauge? 40 spokes?
Huffy has 'large' rim 28 inch also with 40 spokes. Motorcycle rims with 28 inch -- now your talking pre WW2 antiques like Excelsiors and early Indians.

Always thought that it was cool the way the lead guy, I think his name was Michael Parks? Just blew off his drab life and hit the road! His friend died, and left him his bike.

Answer
Bronson's Bike - On the drama THEN CAME BRONSON/NBC/1969-70, Michael Parks starred as San Francisco obituary writer Jim Bronson. After the suicide of his close friend, Nick Oresko [who jumped off a bridge in Jimâs presence] Jim quits his job, buys back a red motorcycle left at the jump site from Nickâs widow, Gloria and then heads south toward Big Sur looking for adventure and some meaning to his life. During his travels Jim drove a red Harley Davidson Sportster 883cc motorcycle with knobby tires [license: 723795]. The gas tank sported a triangle with an image of an eye [similar to the one the back of a dollar bill.] On occasion, Jimâs ride broke down or got banged up from all the wear and tear from its many road races, hill climbs and highway cruising. Some of the minor damages included the time a gas station attendant accidentally put weed killer into his gas tank; and when his rear wheels seized up and he had to get a new drive chain. Throughout his journey Jim wore his trademark Navy blue watch cap and a leather jacket. A press release from MGM describing changes to the "Bronson Bike" appeared in the February 1970 issue of Cycle magazine. It reads as follows:

"For afficionados, the changes are as follows. The front wheel was replaced with a 21" aluminum rim carrying a 3.00 x 21 ribbed tire. The front fender was changed to a chromeplated, bobbed piece and the headlight nacelle, or housing, was removed and a chrome sports light replaced it. A Harley-Davidson CH gas tank replaced the standard tank, and the oil tank and rear shock springs were chrome plated. A kickstarter was added although the Sportster carries an electric starter. The seat was replaced with a custom leather unit and a short chrome hand-hold was mounted behind the passenger seat. The chain guard cover and the voltage regulator cover were chrome plated. The rear fender was bobbed 5 inches and the tail light replaced with an old style English light. The motorcycle was repainted with a specially mixed formula which is called, from this point on, Bronson Red. The final touch was the addition of the Bronson "Eye" insignia to the gas tank."

Child trailer with an electric bike?

Jennifer H

Can you attach a child trailer to an electric bike? Or a scooter? I'm trying to find something for me and my son, who is four and 40 lbs, that will work with me. I have been walking the 3.5 miles for the last month and just want to find something that will cut down my time. I just think using a regular bike with a trailer will be too much and I will be stuck pushing the bike with the trailer up hills. I've also found child carriers, look very similar to car seats, that can be attached as well. Can those be used? They are actually on the bike, not trailing behind

Answer
Think you're bogging down now on a bike you pedal yourself? It'll be worse with the added weight of an electric assist bicycle. Learn how & when to shift gears. Learn about "spinning" the pedals at a high rpm or "cadence" in lower (easier) gears climbing hills. See links...

I am planning on getting a electric hybrid bicycle kit and I don't think they come with a battery meter. I would like to know if I am going on a 10 mile trip how much battery life I have left so, for example I can know whether I need to charge it up on the return trip or whether I have sufficient charge to get me home.

Specs: 408 watt brushed, 36 volt, 25 amp hour motor.
ahhha! thank you. Very good to know. It will in fact not be a Lead Acid battery though, but a NiMH. Would something like this work?
--> http://cgi.ebay.com/36-VOLT-BATTERY-METER_W0QQitemZ6065243018QQcmdZViewItem

Answer
get a 'carbon pile tester'...it's a resistance type tester that'll give you a reading based on resistance on the life of the battery set. I work around construction equipment and we use one daily to diagnose charging system and battery sets...they'll tell you the state of charge and the voltage that's being put out.

Hi, I have just got a hyosung 125gtr and I don't have any gear yet atall. what I would like to know is what gear I need, where to get it and how much it costs? Links to items would be great!

Also any starter riding tips, stuff to look out for and maintenence would be great!

Please only people from the UK answering as American websites and currency is no help to me! Thanks alot.

Answer
Hi Gregg F

Your local bike shops maybe alot more help with the riding gear you need.
But in saying that I spend half the year living and riding in Europe and there is one place I source most of my riding gear from www.louis.eu
They are a German company and on there site you will find a link to there catalogue of products which is very extensive. There may be a agent for Louis in the UK. I suggest you order the paper back version of their catalogue.

I have a little experience with the weather in the UK and as such would advise you to buy a pair of waterproof textile pants, a waterproof textile jacket, a pair of waterproof boots and 2 pair of gloves. If you intend to ride in the winter get a pair of electric heated gloves or at least some handle bar warmers. The problem with most winter gloves is that if they get soaked in the rain and you go to remove them they pull the lining out and it is a hassle to get the lining back in and feeling right.

Hope this helps

Why do Americans refuse to reduce gas use? Should car companies be forced to produce higher mileage cars?

don1862

I think we need higher gas taxes until Americans quit using so much.

Answer
American's don't *refuse* to reduce gas.

Here are some examples of problems, just from my point of view:

1) My fiance bought a kit to convert my mountain bike into an electric powered bicycle so I could ride it to work. BUT, I just found out electric powered bicycles in New York state are ILLEGAL!! And cops won't even bother ticketing you. You're subject to arrest on the spot. So much for trying to go "green," right? This law stands in many states.

2) American public transportation outside of large cities are AWFUL compared to Europe. The funding just isn't there.

3) The media promotes bigger and/or faster vehicles such as sports cars, SUV's, Hummers, etc. as status symbols. Unfortunately, people are stupid enough to "buy into" the hype, rather than keeping to an economically viable option... And if the media doesn't win people over with the "status symbol" - they tell people large vehicles are "safer" - so untrue.

4) Other than the dent in our wallets, there isn't much incentive or other options for many people to consume less gas.

5) Car companies will often buy patents just to shelve them. "Green" inventions that improve gas mileage ARE out there. The greedy oil industry - including congress people - don't want to get away from oil. There's a LOT of money invested in the oil industry. Can you imagine someone wanting to give up their wealth and power?

I'll add more examples as I think of them...
