I was looking the 2011 WR250X, the 2011 WR250R and the 2012 TW200. I prefer the TW2000 cause is cheaper and dont know it looks nice. But i will like to know the pros and cons of each one, nore concentrated in the TW200. Thanks

Answer
Rule out the wr250x as its street tires will not be good off road.

The wr250r is a dual sport, powerful for a 250 and tall, so you will want to sit on one and see if it fits. While it won't be too comfortable on a highway it is fast enough for one. It would be a good off road bike based on the power and tires.

The TW200 has been sold for years so its easy to find one used, though I think very early models had kick starting only, so check the one you are looking at has electric start. It will be about half the price of the 250, less if you are buying used. Its 200cc engine is not very powerful, so it will not be fast enough for highway driving (top speed is around 60mph). It will be ok on easy trails, but a bit underpowered on anything with steep hills. If it doesn't matter to you about the higher speed and power of the 250, or the 250 is too tall, then I think the TW200 would be a good in town and trail bike, and fine for country riding, and will get really good gas mileage.

do you think the electric vehicle leasing scheme in hong kong will facilitate the use of electric vehicles?

anonymous

Answer
You obviously are responding to a bit of news. It would be best to cite an article or other reference when asking a question like this. What I could find was this article form 2010 that referred to a leasing scheme in Hong Kong as an attempt to combat air pollution in one of the most traffic congested cities in the world. http://blogs.wsj.com/hong-kong/2011/01/31/why-electric-cars-arent-selling/

While electric vehicles should help with pollution issues it might be best to consider the traffic issues as well and then determine that the best EV would be one that is either computer controlled, part of a public transit system, or both.

In addition while the EV will reduce pollution, the gains will not be as great as possible where industry and residences rely upon coal fired power plants, the predominant electric producing facility in China.

China has also already embraced another electric vehicle solution: ebikes. http://www.fastcoexist.com/1681004/electric-bikes-have-invaded-china-is-the-us-next#1 with now more than 120 million on the roads. Because it is smaller, lighter more of them can fit on to a roadway, they are cheaper to own and to operate. Ebikes as an electric vehicle are already a success in China.

I'm getting a new bike, i currently own a crf230f, and people tell me I am very skilled, I'm 14 and 6'3. Which bike would suit me, and please don't say get a yamaha or a honda, because I know I want one of these two bikes.
Cost doesn't matter btw.

Answer
you cant be very skilled if you ride a crf230. that bike will hold you back from you full potential. not baggin you just sayin, you can only get so good on a bike like that. KTM four strokes are behind the eight ball. the 11 isnt "better" than the 12 some people just prefer it over the newer model because they dont like the new linkage although the electric start is pretty mint. every seems to have different opinions and the general opinion is the kwaka is better. for 12 it has two injectors which gives heaps more power than the gutless 2011 model. they sorted the suspension and its pretty sweet. id say the kawi is better bike and cheaper to run. when you say money isnt a problem, you mean your parents are paying for every thing? 14 year olds dont have that type of money. when i was 14 the best i could do was a 2001 yz250f. the suzuki is probs the best bike and yamaha is mid way but is by far the most reliable. i bought a 2010 yamie for that reason only. no blocked injectors, no busted cranks like honda, and well over 100 hours out of piston and rings if you look after it. if just between green and orange, go the green. its better and way cheaper to run. the ktm is stupidly expensive to run if keeping it geniune. out of all bikes, go suzuki or yam. suzuki is the best, yamaha last the longest. to put ktm into perspective, dungey went to ktm and said the bike simply isnt competitive so he and roger built a hole no bike. dungey is not on a official ktm bike, it just has kato stickers on it. saying you are very skilled at 14 and on a 230 make you sound cocky by the way. you prob just ride fire trails. very skilled is lorreta lynn stuff. if you were skilled you would what you want from a bike. id just stay with any Japanese bike, since your comming off one, it takes slightly different ride style to get the kato working. oh and ktm has got pathetic bottom end so if ou ride tight stuff, stay away from kato.

Can I charge a Power wheels 12 v battery with a conventional charger?

best bike battery charger image

I have a 12/24v battery charger with aligator clips. Can use this with a Power Wheels Battery?
The port is the problem. Can I hook the clips to the Power Wheels connection on the battery?

Answer
it all depends if you put in to much volts into the battery you rune it and if you put to little it doesn't charge if you can find one that puts in the same amount of volts then it should charge. don't use any phone chargers or bike chargers they alwas put out more volts then it says. 12 v wheel needs a 12 v charger that has the same type of port.

Which is the best brand of best battery charger?

and what ampere rating battery charger should I use for a yamaha
yzf-R6? what difference does the ampere rating make?
I'm looking at battery doc, yuasa, battery tender, and they come in all ampere ratings from 750mA to 1.5A.
answers from any owner of these battery charger are appreciated.
Thank you in advance.

Answer
I agree with the other folks who've recommended the Battery Tender,,it's a good charger.

Your question about Amp Rating.....
In simplest terms,,Amp rating determines the SPEED at which a battery can be recharged.

A Higher Amperage will recharge a given battery Faster.

"Speed" or "Faster" is usually considered a GOOD THING.

NOT SO on Battery Charging!!!
SLOWER is Better,,for several reasons.

HEAT is a major concern.
Higher Amp /Charging Rate will always produce Higher Battery Temps,,,even if it's all within acceptable Specs.

The Lower Charging Temps can be,,the Longer the Battery Life.
The Trade off is SLOWER Charge rate.

Time to Full Charge is figured according to Battery Amp capacity.
Example:
A 1A Charger will Fully Charge a 6A Battery in 6Hours(approx)
A 2A Charger would do it in 3Hrs
A 12A would fully charge a 6A Batt in 1/2 Hr or less!!
The same 1Amp Charger would fully Charge an 80Amp Car Battery....in 80 Hours--about 3 1/2 DAYS.

So in Principle(an in practice) ANY 12Volt Charger will Charge ANY 12 Volt Battery.
It's TRUE that "1 Size Fits All".
But there's Huge Differences in the Performance/Effects amongst the various combos of Batt Size/Charger rates.
In REALITY,,,that "rule" includes a huge compromise.

The Trade-off ranges from extreme OVERCHARGING ,,OverHeating,,Boiling out the Electrolyte,& Reducing Battery LIFE,,,,,,
To being simply "TOO SLOW" to be Practical for most situations.
No one wants to wait 2~3 DAYS for their battery to ReCharge when they need to get to work the next morning.

So the matter of determining " Best SIZE Charger/charge rate"
comes down to considering The Intended Use.

The SMALLER/SLOWER the Charger,,the BETTER,,,for Battery Life,,and "personal safety".

The BIGGER/FASTER the charger,,the Better for quick charge,,getting going in a hurry,etc.

In Your instance,,,and choice of 1.5A vs 750mA(3/4A) it doesn't SEEM like that big a difference.
One is TWICE the charge rate of the Other,,
it will Charge TWICE as Fast.
But it'll also (theoretically) be able to Heat the Battery Twice as much,,boil electrolytes Twice as fast, and generate twice the sulfation rate.

I "THINK" Your battey is an 8 Amp job?
From Fully Dead,,a 1.5A charger will fully charge it in 5 Hrs approx.
That's NOT "overcharging" a 7A~12A range Battery,,,but it's nearing Borderline of what's BEST for Battery Life.

A 3/4A~~ .750mA Charger would take about 10 Hours.
That's SLOWER for YOU,,but Much Better for the Battery.

If you,,left lights on and totally Drained Battery,,,
EITHER would Fully recharge it "overnight".
Either would also recharge it "enough" in 20~30 minutes to allow Kickstarting...provided the battery is in decent physical condition.

Which is also a consideration.
You surely want to keep your battery as Healthy & Happy as possible.
But you also want the capability to deal with "worst case" of a Drained battery to be able to get going in a reasonable amount of time.
20 minutes,,to an Hour WAIT might be fine for YOU,,,while a 4hour wait would "ruin your day"...just for example.

It comes down to what an Individual NEEDS /Wants/Expects.
And the choice should be made with the awareness of the Compromises,,the trade-offs that are inevitable.

And as Contrary as it seems to "BIGGER is BETTER" thinking,,,
Smaller Chargers,,LOWER Charge Rates are BETTER for Battery Life and Reliability.

....................................................
I see you're in Illinois,,,and assume your Biking is limited during winter weather.

If that's so,,and you plan to keep your battery on maintenance charger for the several months of downtime,,,here's a suggestion.

Disconnect the battery cables,,to isolate it from the electrical system.

Keep an eye on the "water Level",,,and use ONLY Distilled Water if you need to add some.
Every grocery store,walmart,etc has it,,$1/gal
I know thats been said a Gazillion times over the last 50 million years,,,and we violate the "Distilled Water ONLY" Rule TWICE that many times and get away with it.
But it DOES make a Huge Difference, especially on Small Batteries.
The chemical/mineral elements in Tap Water/Mineral Water are "electrically" the equivalent of putting a steel screwdriver across the 2 battery terminals,,,,and/or Insulating the internal plates from electron flow.
It's a FAINT effect,,so the bad results take Time to kill the battery.
But it DOES have a distinct and CERTAIN bad effect on Batt Life & reliability.
A GOOD batt that wears out,,Gradually gets weakers and Declines in power,,,giving you "fair warning"

A "Bad" battery from effects of Overcharging,,improper maintenace,,and Wrong Water/Electrolytes--Tap Water,,,
They're "Fine" one day,,and DEAD the next...NO warning.
I dont mean run-down/discharged,,I mean DEAD>Deceased.

"Old News" on Distilled Water,we all know that,so just a reminder.

If you Do plan a "total shutdown" thru winter,,,of course you can Manually charge your battery occasionally during that time.
It's not that much hassle.

The Type of chargers your considering are made to be left on for extended periods anyway.

Ideal,,for both personal convenience And Battery health would be a TIMER that switches the Charger Itself on/off.
Switch charger ON a while,,,let the Charger's Circuitry do IT'S job,,then OFF and let both the charger & battery rest a few days.
YOUR requirement would only be maybe a monthly check of Batt's water level.

Multi-Day Timers are somewhat expensive.
You could buy a New battery next spring for "same price".
So it becomes a rather "false economy",,,any NEW battery is always gonna be better than even BEST-maintained one.

One alternative that tends to "split the difference" is the Single day/24 Hr Timers.
They're cheap enough ,,Under $10 at places like Walmart.
You can set them for a few hours of ON-time each day.
1~2 Hrs Daily Run-Time of the "Smart Chargers" will keep your Batt at Optimum Level,,,,while reduce Total Time of Charger operation.
Saves Energy,LegWork,Battery,,and Charger.
It also constitutes a sort of "extra safety" in the event the battery is "forgotten" on the charger.
Instead of Charger running on maintenance mode all day,,it gets switch OFF automatically.

A Small,Frequent Charge will maintain a battery better than Less-Frequent,more extended charge.

Granted,,that may be a Moot Point,,or even Totally Pointless for many folks.
But a cheap, simple On/Off Timer can be a very useful "charging accessory" for SOME situations.

One example,,not "scientific" and not directly comparable is the "Seasonal" Boats down here on Gulf Coast area.
I know a Bunch of people who replace a SET of batteries every Year at season's beginning,,even after "charging them thru the Off-Season"(Innefectively,,Obviously)
Well,,the simple addition of a Timer & leaving the charger connected "Full Time",,,the batteries are now giving 2 and 3 Years of Reliable Service.
In THAT application,,it's a $10~$50 Timer ,,saving $150~200 Battery set annual expense---forestalling that expense a year or 2. They can "live in the boat shed" for 6 months unattended with no worries about ever overcharging,,or going dead & sulphating themselves to death.

.................
Last Small but important point.
Batt VENT HOSE.
Make sure it's open and not pinched anywhere,,obviously.
Also consider it's Routing path,,particulrly where the Open End is positioned.

Batts make a gas(Hydrogen) which gets "blown away" by airflow during riding.
But that gas also Condenses in the tube,,and some LIQUID "battery acid" exits the tube.
Very Corrosive,,so make sure and drips can't be blown onto Bike Parts while Riding.

A Different environment and conditions exist while Charging the batt.
Any "drips" from the vent are gonna go SOMEWHERE.
With No Road Wind,,naturally they'll fall straight down.
If Damage to your FLOORING is a concern,,,use some kinda drip pan----something plastic is best,,,some common Baking Soda sprinkled in it both retains any acid,,And neutralizes it.

The GAS that exits the vent during charging is Hydrogen Gas.
That's not only Flammable,,it's Explosive.
It dont just Burn,,it DETONATES.
Like the difference between lighting a Candle and a Firecracker.

It's WAY lighter than Air,,Lighter than even Helium.
(You may be famliar with the HINDENBURG BLIMP which exloded/Burned in the '40's)It was filled with HYDROGEN.
I can't imagine of a better example.

The implication to a person charging their Battery on a bike is this:
Most all bikes have their Batt Vent Tubes routed Down and exitting at Bottom of Bike.

While sitting still,,and Batt being Charged,,and Hydrogen being produced,,,,
Where's the vented GAS going??
RIGHT,,it's wafting STRAIGHT BACK UP,,"through the Motorcycle".
Your Bike is like a chicken getting smoked on a grille,,,Except it Aint Hickory.
It's Corrosive,Acidic,Flammable Hydrogen Gas.

The "cure" is simple,,,get a length of tubing that'll slip snugly over your existing Batt Vent Tube,,,and route it AWAY from the bike.
Simply to avoid the fumes from drifting straight up back onto your bike.

The Volume of Gas produced by a charging battery is Very Small,as far as Flammability concerns.
In a normal garage,or storage shed,,,the AIR:Gas ratio is really too lean to support combustion.
BUT!!!!,,If You happen to use a COVER,,or Tarp,or whatever which DOESN'T "breathe Freely".....
It's POSSIBLE to Fill it with the extremely LIGHT Hydrogen Gas.
In effect,,a sorta "Hydrogen Balloon".
It WILL displace the Air under such a canopy.
You may not actually be creating a "Little Hindenburg Balloon-Bomb" under Your Bike's Cover,,,
But You would CERTAINLY be storing it in a Cloud of Corrosive Hydrogen Gas,,,at minimum.

Routing the Batt Vent AWAY from the Bike is a simple enough solution....and doesnt need to be anything fancy , elaborate,or expensive.

Zillions of batteries get charged doing "everything Wrong",,,and do just fine anyway,,or at least apparently Good Enough.

But a few small principles can be Better for Bike,it's Battery,,the Charger,the bike's Storage Area,,and owner's convenience ,safety,,and pocketbook.

Quick recap:
**Smaller/Slower Charger is generally Better
**Mind Batt Water Level,,stick with actual Distilled Water to add
**A cheap Timer MIGHT offer convenience & may add maintenance efficiency
**Mind the Battery Vent's Condition And Position
--Under Riding Conditions
--And,,under Parked > Batt-Charging conditions

So,,Just some ideas that may be of use in certain instances.

Take care.

I was putting together a bike when a friend started fooling around with the Kick Start. I hadn't even put the battery in, but for some reason it froze up. Then after I got the Kick level to move, it still won't start. As if there is no spark. It tries to start but won't. Did my friend do something to my bike?

Answer
If you have spark to the spark plug it's not electrical. And I can't think of any reason your kick starter would affect your electrical. But as said in another answer pull your spark plug, hold the threaded part of the plug against the outside of the head for a ground, with the plug wire on and turn the bike over with the key on. Do it in a fairly dark place and look for spark at the end of your plug. Assuming your getting fuel and your pretty sure it should run take to a steep hill, get it rolling down, put it in second or third gear, not first you'll most probably just slide the rear tire, and let the clutch out. This is of course assuming the motor turns over with the electric start or kicker.

Should he get me a electric bike or a conversion which is cheaper I've been wanting one for a while now it would climbing those steep hills easier especially the bridges I didn't think i would make it
Riding the Williamsburg bride I was to embarrassed to stop n rest because everybody else was making look so easy anyway I live in ny so if u no any E bike shop with low prices

Answer
Electric assist bicycles are VERY heavy. And the charge always runs out at the most in-opportune time. This leaves you pedaling that VERY heavy bicycle home - unassisted.

For the price of an electric assist bicycle, you could buy one hell-of-a good road or hybrid bike with the gears to conquer hills. So why did it look so easy for everyone else? Ever thought about that? Probably because they are on their bike every day - or close to every day. Cycling will improve your heart, build stamina, tone legs muscles & take off body fat proportionately all over.

Now it's up to you. Want to keep getting weaker & weaker? Or would you rather grow stronger & get over that Williamsburg bridge on your own?

Is there an australian company that makes bicycle generators.?

Gee 18

Like a training bike connected to an electric motor that charges a battery. I can buy one from america but want to shop local.

Answer
Yes, there are a few different brands. While Yahoo Shopping Australia and NZ didn't have many leads, I was able to find the motor kits, and the bicycles by doing a search: AUSTRALIAN ELECTRIC BICYCLES.

Check out NavTrak, which features hybrid bicycles:

http://energy.sourceguides.com/businesses/byP/ev/eBike/byGeo/byC/Australia/Australia.shtml

I would contact a few dealers directly because it wasn't clear, on the models I saw, whether the battery recharges while peddling. Usually, the generator is small and only powers the lights.

Check out the Australia Bike companies:

http://electric-bikes.com/retailers.htm#Europe

There is a brand called "Charger" that is based in San Francisco. It's models feature battery recharging while pedaling. Maybe a local bicycle shop would order one for you.

Here's a list of a few bicycle clubs in Australia that may be able to help with more info:

So I don't know how to drive despite being of age and have some questions on the driving test?

So sue me I'm scared of cars.

Okay the thing is I want to know that since my driving permit expired years ago will I need to retake the test when I go in for an actual license? Can someone link me to where I can take a review test or go over the information Ill need for the real test? I live in IL , USA.

Answer
You cannot drive with an International Driver's Permit (IDP) in mainland China; China has not signed the convention which created IDPs. You need a Chinese license to drive in China. (Hong Kong, Macau or Taiwan issued licenses are not considered Chinese licenses.)
PRC laws say that foreign residents can have driver's licenses and that an IDP can be converted to a local license, possibly with an additional examination. It is now possible to get a provisional driver's license very easily in major cities like Beijing. You can get one directly from the counters at Beijing Capital Airport without any tests. Actually, getting a regular license may be quite complicated. The particular complications seem to vary from place to place and over time.
First, there is a computerized theory test of 100 out of over 1300 multiple choice questions with 90% as a pass mark; if you do not pass, you can do a second test without paying any further fee. In major cities, these tests are available in multiple languages. In smaller places, the officials may insist you do it in Chinese. Some allow you to bring a translator; others do not. It is common that besides just translating, the translator will dictate you correct answers and expect a small fee of not more than 100 yuan.
Generally, but not always, you are excused from the actual driving test if you have a foreign license.
Some foreigners report that Chinese friends suggested a small gift to the local officials and it helped greatly; others have been told by their Chinese friends that such a move would be foolish and dangerous.
The easiest way for a foreigner to get a Mainland license is to take the following action: in Hong Kong, convert your foreign license into a Hong Kong license for about US$120. Then, go to Mainland (Guangzhou is probably the easiest place) and convert your HK license into a Mainland license.
It is quite possible to pass the test all by yourself. The paperwork (registration for the test, testing, fetching license) is all done in the driving test centre, eg. in Xili for Shenzhen area. It is quite time expensive though, because you have to go there several times. Better way is to ask one of the small driving schools, which can be found at every second corner in Shenzhen to do all the paperwork for you. The test can be done everywhere in at least English, but the English questions are not officially available anymore. [1], [2], [3] On January 1, 2013 a new motor vehicle driver training teaching and examination syllabus came into force in China. The new pool of exam questions has been extensively updated and 90% of the questions are new. The new question bank is not going to be published by the Traffic Management Bureau as it is their intention that students must learn the traffic regulations and understand the intention of the rules rather than memorize answers to questions.
Larger companies whose employees do not have time or self-employed mainly use a service in obtaining the license
In most places, private tutoring is allowed given common sense and reasonable care: that means in practice that at least one person in the car must have a valid license but not necessarily the driver.
At least in some cities electric scooters are legally treated as bicycles. You do need to register the vehicle but only with a bicycle license which is cheaper and easier than a motorcycle license. You do not need a driver's license to ride it. Some cities completely ban the use of electric bicycles. There may be restrictions in where you can ride it, eg: not in the main traffic lanes.
[edit]Self Drive tours
There are self-drive tours of various areas, often with service that includes getting a China Drivers License for the foreign driver and renting a car for the trip include

How to prepare for a hurricane storm ?

DOMINIQUE

Live in new orleans and hurricane Issac is coming . My family is not leaving , so how could i prepare myself ?

Answer
Here are the 10 things off the top of my head that should be on your lists that most people forget to do if you decide to stay and are usually not listed on most safety manuals.

1. Let people know that you are staying. This will make search and rescue easier if someone can tell them for sure that there were people inside the structure that used to be your home.

2. Make sure your home is not in a flood prone area or in an area where if a nearby levee goes, you home will be flooded. If you do live in this type of area, make sure you know where you can go if flood waters starts to enter your home. Keep life jackets on or nearby in case you need to use them

3. Make sure that you have at least 1 week supply of food and water for the entire family and be prepared for at least one week to one month without gas and electric power. It usually take much longer than people think to restore basic services.

4. If you plan to move up to the attic as flood water rises in your home, make sure you bring a saw. Many people who take shelter in the attic may get trapped in the attic if the flood water levels rises above the rooftop level. A saw will help you cut a hole so that you can escape.

5. Once the storm starts, it is better to stay put than to panic and try to get to one of the safe shelters in your community. It is very dangerous to try to move during a storm with winds as strong as hurricane strength.

6. Make sure all the windows and doors have plywood to prevent any blowing debris from entering your house and c damage and injury or death to any family members taking shelter inside. During the storm, stay away from doors and windows even if they are protected by plywood.

7. Make sure that you fill your gas tank in your car before the storm hits. Bring a bicycle inside to protect them. They maybe the best way that you can get around relatively quickly after a storm has ended. Remember to watch out for down power lines and live wire after the storm.

8. Have all cell phones charged up as well as any rechargeable batteries you have in your home. Use flashlights with LED bulbs...they are bright and last much longer than other kinds of flash lights.

9'. Make sure you have designated a place that all your family will know if they get lost or if something happens that will force your family to scattered. Also the family should agree on a location or a place where hand written messages can be left for other family members after the storm.

10, Make sure you have a NOAA weather or NOAA All-Hazards radio with fresh batteries and backup so that you can monitor the latest update on the storm situation.

Oh, one more thing. Wear bright color or fluorescence color clothes so that it will be easy for you to find one another after the storm or for others to find you.

There are many other standard advices that can be found easily on the net that you should review.

How to fix a flat tire on electric moped?

best tyres for electric bikes image

I got a mini electric moped from one of my friends just to screw around on. The back tire is messed up and will not even air up. Is there something i can put in is that will harden the whole thing or anything at all i can do. I dont really want to buy a whole new tire for it. I just want something to fix it or make it so it wont be flat. Any ideas?

Thank you

Answer
Kz, there should be a tube in the tire, remove the wheel first. Have someone who has patched a bike tire before show you how to remove the tube, and repair the tube with a glue patch.

Then air it up & check the tube for leaks with a spray bottle of soapy water, replace the tube & wheel, and go.

How often should I check my tire pressure for my ATV?

Ben W

I have a 2008 yamaha grizzly that I ride everyday of the week. How often should I check the tire pressure for it?

Answer
What is the recommended tire pressure as by the owner's manual for this vehicle? The higher the pressure, like in bicycles, the higher the rate of leakage. My bike pressure is 75 psi and I have to add air each and every time I ride it, just prior to starting, I have an electric pump powered from the cigarette lighter outlet. Smaller tires do have higher pressures. If you ride every week and you check the pressure each week and each week the pressure is OK then you can go to checking every two weeks. I would check the tires for damage, cuts, general condition as they do a lot of work over non paved trails before you ride it just to make sure they are OK to ride. Do you carry a spare and tools? Best to be safe before you get going. OK? Good question. Best regards.

Who is "killing" the Electric Bike (aka Electric Scooter) in US and Canada? Many retail shops have closed, from Boston to Vancouver. North American manufacturers (Nova Cruz, Wavecrest, Bionx, Egovehicles) have gone under or are selling much less than they did before.

In comparison, in most of Asia, sales of ebikes are surging? Is it the economy collapse? Is it government? Is it the big auto companies? Is it battery companies? Is it some other factor?

Answer
All these smaller vehicles are disappearing mainly because of our affluence. As all the household get affluent they do not want smaller bikes and cars and go for bigger ones. Also it creates a fashion and so the not so affluent also aim to buy it. In due course there is no takers and they die a natural death.
Take the case of China where a decade ago there were thousands of cycles in the main cities and now they are all replaced with bikes and cars. So is the case of India. Once it was having a lot of 100 cc bikes but now it is n the decline. So it is the life style and not the government or oil companies who are responsible for it.

Who knows that where is ROMAI Electric bike in India?

Can the pedaling energy charge the battery of an electric bike?

Can the mechanical energy of pedaling be stored as electrical energy to be utilized later to run the bicycle automatically? I'm not talking about pure electric bikes that need regular charging, and not even about those that you pedal for a while as the bike stands still and then run it on electric power. I mean can you ride a bike and store the mechanical energy simultaneously? Will it be efficient? If so, then are such e-bikes available in the market, and what are they called so that I may Google for them?

Here's the scenario: I need a bicycle for regular commute, may be even for covering long distances. It's not feasible for a layman to pedal continuously for more than 5 to 10 miles. So I'm looking for a bike that you pedal for sometime, and when you're exhausted, you simply flick a button to make it run on electrical power which has been converted and stored from the mechanical energy of pedaling the bike; and then pedal again and auto-ride again and so forth. Will something like that be technically efficient, since you're moving the bike while pedaling as well as storing your spare energy?

Hope I haven't confused you. Thanks :)

Answer
There is already such a motor on the market. The name escapes me right now but it is a hub built into the rear wheel and it costs about $2000... not the Erbike hub motor... I think it is Electricrider or something like that.

To your request, yes, it is possible and a project I am working on right now. No, I can't and won't divulge details but CAN tell you that you'll see it relatively soon and it WILL be expensive- more expensive than a small motorcycle at this point.

By the way... I typically commute 24 miles (one way) to work on a bicycle, no problem. 5-10 mile commute is simple for most committed riders.

Answer
You will have to pedal extra hard to keep the bike going and to charge the battery. It could be done, but it would be easier and more efficient to pedal a regular (lighter) bike.

Maybe you could use a large solar panel to power the bike

What is the maximum cc you can use on a bike without needing a motorcycle license in illinois?

Nick

I want to make a push bike with the biggest cc motor and want to know what is the max I can go without breaking the law. Something to get to the grocery store and back pretty much. save a little on gas. thank you for your help. :)

Answer
Illinois is a bit picky about requiring license for 'motor vehicles' including 'motorcycles' class that includes the 'mopeds' in other states- they do have a 'light/beginners' license required on the little 50cc scooters up to 150cc and a 'full' motorcycle license' for larger cycles. What you're inquiring about is a sort of grey area of a 'bicycle with motor assist'- and the few notes I've seen say they let electric motored with pedals bikes be treated as bicycles--but a gas engined on the street is a 'motor vehicle' requiring various bits and pieces, license plate and a motorcycle operators license. other post imply they get away with 1hp and under 20mph top speed on a previously registered 'bicycle' that still has operating pedals- it is a 'assisted' bicycle, not a 'motor vehicle' and the old case law in Illinois on Whizzer kits treated them as bicycles so unless legislative act or Illinois DOT has a specific administrative rule you can argue in court and MAYBE get away with it if you quoted the old case laws- and prosecutor didn't have a counter. Don't ride at night without lights, don't get drunk, and check your local police for a 'upgrade' of the bicycle municipal registration.

What are the pros and cons of buying a motor for a bicycle?

I'm 14 and am thinking about getting a summer job. I have a mountain bike, and want to be able to get to work without freakin' pedaling everywhere. I am looking at a 80cc (66cc) bike kit that I want to put on my bike. What are the pros of a bike motor, and what are the cons (weather, reliability)

Answer
Gas motors on bicycles are called mopeds! There are reasons mopeds and motorcycles are built the way they are and not like a standard bike.

Pros to gas bike motor: None.
Cons:
Fire hazard
Gasoline fumes which are a known carcinogen or cancer causing agent
Unreliable
Extra weight when the motor dies or you run out of gas
Expensive
Depending on where you live they might be illegal

If you must have a motor other than yourself, buy an electric assist bicycle. They'll help you start from a standstill and get you to a comfortable cruising speed without too much sweat.

This is a complex question I know. I know little about electrical engineering but I want to build an electric bike. I could buy the same materials others have used but I'd like to use Lithium Ion Batteries. So can I connect wires from many bats to a standard controller and then to an electric motor? I assume I can, energy is energy, but what should I look out for. Has anyone tried this?

Answer
This is basically what they do for car batteries in hybrid motors, so yes, this is doable.

What are the Michigan laws on licensing and riding ebikes on the streets?

detrich200

Im considering buying an electric bike (1000 watts/ 1 hp) and Im wondering what the laws are on riding them in the streets of michigan. Im thinking it would be the same as electric scooter law. But I dont know what they are.

Answer
In California a 1000 watt e-bike would have to be licensed and registered. You would also have to have a driver's license to ride it. I have a 600 watt which is considered a bicycle in CA. It does not require registration nor a DL to ride it. Google X treme ebike for info on your state.

Answer
Yes, it can!

Electric cycles are readily available. You normally charge them from a mains supply and then you can part-pedal / part-drive them on your commute. You can often adjust the amount of assistance to be supplied by the motor enabling you to go faster but less far or vice versa. If you want to pedal the bike and store 50% (say) of your energy for later you can do so but you will be doing double the work when pedalling, so your commute will be, so to say, twice as hard or half as fast and take twice as long. That doesn't seem to make much sense, especially since electric cycles are heavy and pedalling them (with no motor assistance) even without any of your energy going to storage, will be quite slow and tediously tough.

What an electric cycle does do is re-charge the batteries when you go downhill giving you back at least a good fraction of the energy expended in climbing up. But that produces a braking effect and the speed of descent is reduced. What inevitably goes lost is the energy taken by friction and wind resistance. Storing and using later is also subject to a degree of loss.

In short, if you don't want to use a commercial energy source to "fuel" your bicycle, get a conventional one - you'll do vastly better.

I am designing an electric bike for commuters to use day in, day out. I am asking you guys who live on the outskirts of cities to give me what you want in the perfect personal transport. This product is made for the masses and made by the masses. Any answers will be appreciated and taken into account. Thanks all!
May i add that this is a conceptual design project :)

Answer
I've been working on the same thing for different clients for years, but I'll tell you what things designers are trying to overcome:

1) Weight. The current technologies simply do not allow an e-bike that weighs under 50 pounds. A good target weight should be in the mid-20s;

2) Battery size. The size of even the smallest battery right now takes up precious space for carrying other stuff, and if the battery gets too small the range is reduced tremendously. Right now, Mitsubishi probably makes the best battery/motor combination;

3) Loaded range. Put a rider and 35 pounds of gear on the bike and ride it up a 5% grade, 1 mile long hill two or three times. Nuff said.

What is your best advice for an electrical bicycle?

Tryphon To

Friends

I have an aluminium bicycle and was thinking of adding an electric wheel. However, I fancy those bikes that that recharge downhill.

Besides I am looking to pedal at constant speed and let the electric motor adjust to increasing demands.

What kind of bike is suitable for this?

I was thinking of outfitting my own bike, because I am tall and have the feeling that the electric bikes may not fit me, or, do these come in large sixes?

Thanks

Rehman of Multan

Answer
recharge downhill?
that doesn;t work

no electric bike is really powerful or long range

if the batteries die, they are too heavy to pedal up any hill at all

what is a 'multan'?

There are some custom bikes that have been made but no production bikes. Try doing some searches on "feet forward bikes" or ff motorcycles, etc...

How do you think a company like Black and Decker can improve sales, with the poor housing market?

I have a project for business strategy and I need to survey people for ideas. I have several, but want to see if other people could come up with something new.

Black and Decker makes tools and fasteners, and are currently struggling since the construction market is struggling.

Answer
Well, I build Electric Bicycles, and a Fiberglass Ladies Bicycle (that my Daughter designed).
There is a market for electric motor kits, to motorize bicycles.
Think:
Black & Decker is well known for quality electric motors, maybe they should build an electric bike with the B&D name brand on it.?
