Sophie Smi

Are any BBC fans aware of a tour in 2011?? and where theyre going??

Im a MASSIVE fan, and i promised my friend i would take her to one of their concerts, do you know when are where theyre playing??

THANK YOOOUU :)

Answer
Well a few NME issues ago they revealed they are working on a third album, electric like the first one, so a new album usually means new tour.

Basically I'd they they're definitely touring this year. But dates probably won't be revealed until the new album is released.
Hope I helped :)

some of the descriptions on the power, exhaust, suspension, wheels are a bit weird.

like no manufacture would say the power is "Wheelies in 2nd and 3rd gear!!" unless there a joke.

but this does sound kinda legit but it does depend on the price$.

if it is under $1000 i would say that is okay. if its over that dont bother, go on ebay.

BEST DIRT BIKE FOR A GIRL.. HELP!!!!?

starryblue

I WOULD LIKE TO START GETTING INTO DIRT BIKE RIDING.. MY BOYFRIEND HAS A STREET BIKE (2011 ZX-14) AND I ABSOLUTELY LOVE RIDING ON THE BACK, BUT I FEEL A STREET BIKE IS A LITTLE TOO DANGEROUS FOR ME, AND MY DAD WOULD KILL ME IF I BROUGHT ONE HOME. SO WITH THAT BEING SAID, I WOULD LIKE TO TRY DIRT BIKE RIDING INSTEAD. I HAVE BEEN ON ONE BEFORE BUT I OBVIOUSLY STILL CONSIDER MYSELF A NEWBIE RIDER. I AM 20 YEARS OLD, ABOUT 5'4 AND WEIGH 111 POUNDS. JUST WONDERING WHAT THE BEST DIRT BIKE FOR ME WOULD BE CONSIDERING MY RIDING EXPERIENCE AND WEIGHT/HEIGHT.

THANKS SO MUCH FOR HELPING OUT! MEANS A LOT!

Answer
My personal thought would be to go with a Yamaha TTR125le. My younger brother had that bike when he was about your size. It is very manageable with weight, and it has an electric start so you don't have to waist your time kicking all day. If you are looking for a little bigger big then i would go for a Honda crf 150F basically the same as the yamaha but is a little big and has a bit more power. but before buying any dirt bike, I would go to your local motorcycle dealer and sit on and test the weight of any bike before you buy it.

Where can I get a motor trike (3 wheel) in the Dallas / Ft. Worth area that I can make payments on?

redriverwo

If you know of someone or a dealership please provide me w/ the contact info and send to redriverwoman42@yahoo.com
I am looking for a motorcylce trike 3-wheeler such as a Honda Goldwing-something that the conversion has already been done on.

Answer
The Pep Boys auto parts stores, as well as AutoZone and others, sell very cheap Chinese ATV's and small electric and gas bikes. They are priced under $1000 in most cases, and some are even under $500 so making payments wouldn't be needed unless you're really broke.

dirt bike for a 13 year old girl?

Q. i only know a little about them and i really want to ride them. my parents had them when they where younger and at my dads cousins house they have a track because he races. i don't want something slow and i don't want anything super fast just something in the middle. im about 5`2 if that helps at all. could you tell me the basics of riding and what do you think would fit me best by the way it would probably be used from craigslist and under 1000 i was looking at like something from 1997 or up but i wouldn't really trust one that old. also what gear would i need.

Answer
Since you have never had a dirtbike, I HIGHLY recommend you stay away from 2-strokes...they are cheaper in price...but they are harder to learn on and more difficult to get the hang of. You are one inch shorter than me...I am 5'3 and I ride a crf150rb. There are two types of 150's...the race and the trail. I'm not sure which kind of bike you are looking for to start on, or if you are even wanting to race. This bike is not cheap...but you can find them used and they are amazing to start on. The crf150f is the trail version, it will have an electric start and not be as fast as the race bike. It will also have a smaller price tag. The crf150r or rb ( note that they are the same bike...the rb is just a little taller...) is a race bike. It is a pretty fast bike, but since it is a 4-stroke it does not demand being on the powerband 24/7 making it also a pretty good bike to learn on. These bikes are also excellent for your size. The bike first came out in 06 for the race version, and I'm not sure about how far back the trail version of the bikes goes.
Besides the bike, you will need some riding boots. Try some Thor Women's or Fox Comp 5 boots.
You will need a helmet. Any major mx manufactuer makes a wide variety of helmets.
You will need mx gear ( pants and jersey, gloves, googles.) You can pick whatever brand you like best for these items. There is Fox, Thor, One Industries, Answer, O'Neal, MSR, etc.
Have fun girl! Welcome to the dirtbike world! Hope you enjoy whatever you decide to get!

what is a good electric assist bicycle?

Rambo

Im kinda plump and find it hard to ride a reg bike, makes my legs/back hurt...anysuggestions?

Answer
There are no "good" electric assist bicycles. Th cost is astronomical, the price of battery replacement is also sky high & the charge in the battery may run low or OUT at the wrong time at the wrong place. Then you are stuck pedaling a VERY heavy bicycle home under your own power.

Please don't give me that "I'm kinda plump" routine either. I started out several years ago at 315 lbs. I also have degenerative disc disease in the lower back and arthritic knees. By using the proper cycling posture & "spinning" the pedals at a "cadence" of around 70-90 rpm (if not more) at all times, you can do it too. If I can - anybody can.

Trek Electric Assist Bicycles - lowest priced one - $2,299.99 - http://www.trekbikes.com/us/en/collections/electric_assist/models/

My 2011 Raleigh Touring Road Bike - cost - $1,200 - http://www.raleighusa.com/archive/2011-steel-road/sojourn-11/

Started off on a straight hybrid with the upright sitting/riding position. Switched to road bikes about a year ago. Love 'em!!! Today I rode 26 miles! Again...don't give me that "I'm kinda plump" routine. If I can get fit & shed pounds - anyone can. Links below from the late Sheldon Brown. Please read.

this is what i bought:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/221046610777?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649

it doesn't come with a battery. But what i found is way overpriced. Someone help me find a compatible battery. Thanks.

Answer
Batteries for electric bikes are expensive and you have to buy one that will fit the connecters that go to the controller and the motor. In any case a cheap battery will end up costing more in the long run. IT won't hold as much energy, you won't be able to go as far, it won't last long, and it could even damage the rest of the system

Electric bike battery life?

vasu

For how many days electric bike batteries can work normally. What are the maintenance costs for that. In India is it registration for that.

Answer
It's not clear what you mean. There are 2 things:
1. How long the battery will run before recharging depends on its size, age & condition and how it is driven - the maker usually gives a figure for the bike's range (distance per charge), but this is an average based on a factory test. If the weather is very cold, if you drive faster or uphill, or with a heavy load, the distance will be shorter. If you drive more slowly, on level roads or downhill and are a small, light person the range will be more.
2. The lifetime of a battery depends on its type (lead-acid, lithium etc.) and how often it is charged/discharged. If a battery is stored in very hot conditions it will not last as long. Again the maker will advise the average lifetime.

Maintenance cost depends on a number of things:
1. If you charge the battery from mains electricity, the cost of charging. the easiest way to find this is to charge the battery ovenight and check your electricity meter, then you can calculate the cost.
If you have a solar panel or wind generator, the charging can be free but these chargers will cost you a lot of money to buy.
2. There will be other maintenance costs like servicing, new tyres and spare parts when the new ones wear out, you will only know these costs when you have used the bike for a long time, perhaps years.

Question about XB-502 E bike?

A C

I am thinking about getting this electric bike as an alternative to getting my drivers license when i turn 16 but I have a question for someone who owns this bike. I would like to know if this scooter can actually go up a hill. Nothing too steep but maybe around a 40 degree angle at most. If someone owns this scooter in CA, I would also like to know if it is completely legal to drive this scooter in the street (and use it as if it was a car) all without having a license and just being 16 years old. Thanks

Answer
Good News! It is can do 20 mph and will most hills.
Good News! It is a California legal "motorized bicycle" (MoPed.)

Bad News -- you are required to have a Class-M2 driver's motorcycle license to legally ride on the streets. You will have to take the Basic Ridercourse ($150) from the CMSP.

======

Looked at you other questions -- seems like you need help with the parents. I could help if:
1. you are local to me so I could talk to them face to face.
2. you are *already* riding a pedal bicycle on the streets.

You can LEGALLY ride a pedal bicycle on the streets and *should* have been riding the streets for at least four years already. Assuming you are already riding on the streets it will be *easy* to get your parents to get a motorcycle license.

If you are not already riding the streets, get that pedal bike on the streets!

WhaCan I use a 48v/600w motor controller for my 36v/500w electric bike motor?t would you like to ask?

solice_in_

Hi, I just wanted some advice from anyone experienced in electric motors please...I just bought an electric bike conversion kit. The kit came from someone who sold it to me without the controller because he said it was faulty, so I have to buy the controller now and I've come across a cheap one that has 48 volts, 600 watts....would this be too much for my 36v, 500w motor (if I get a 48v battery)?? I dont want to overload it. Which matters more for compatibility, the watts ot volts?
Thanks for your help!

Answer
The most important thing to consider is what type of motor is in your kit, brushed or brushless. There are hub-motor bike conversion kits in both types. A brushless motor kit will not work with a brush-type controller and vice versa. Most of the bike kits as well as most electric scooters have brushed motors. The brushless kits are the more expensive ones.

About the ratings: Watts are the measure of total power.
To determine Wattage, you multiply the system Voltage by the number of Amps being drawn. (Watts = Volts x Amps)

You can draw the same number of watts from a different voltage by limiting the Amps (current).
For example:
36V @ 13.88A = 500W
48V @ 10.41A = 500W
(approximately)

Assuming you have a common brush motor, and the controller is the correct type, you can run your 36v/500w motor at 48v. The result will be that the motor will have a higher top speed than it would have at 36v. You do risk overheating the motor if you run it for too long at full throttle at this higher voltage. But if you take it easy on the throttle, and keep it to about 75% or less for most of the time it should be fine. Even if you give it full throttle occasionally, just make sure you don't keep it at full throttle for more than about 1 or 2 minutes at a time.
And don't give it full throttle going up steep or long hills.
That is actually an upgrade that people have done to make 36v e-bikes go faster.

Don't forget that you will also need to get a new charger if the one that came with your kit is for a 36v pack.

If you already have a good 36v battery pack & charger, the easiest and cheapest way to go would probably be to locate a 36v controller similar to the original one. There are websites that sell scooter and e-bike parts where you can order one.

Where can i find information on hybrid cars and how good they are for the environment?

spitch

Answer
What Makes it a Hybrid?
Many people have probably owned a hybrid vehicle at some point. For example, a mo-ped (a motorized pedal bike) is a type of hybrid because it combines the power of a gasoline engine with the pedal power of its rider. In fact, hybrid vehicles are all around us. Most of the locomotives we see pulling trains are diesel-electric hybrids. Cities like Seattle have diesel-electric buses -- these can draw electric power from overhead wires or run on diesel when they are away from the wires. Giant mining trucks are often diesel-electric hybrids. Submarines are also hybrid vehicles -- some are nuclear-electric and some are diesel-electric. Any vehicle that combines two or more sources of power that can directly or indirectly provide propulsion power is a hybrid.
Most hybrid cars on the road right now are gasoline-electric hybrids, although French car maker PSA Peugeot Citroen has two diesel-electric hybrid cars in the works. Since gasoline hybrids are the kind you'll find at your local car dealership, we'll focus on those in this article.

The gasoline-electric hybrid car is just what it sounds like -- a cross between a gasoline-powered car and an electric car. Let's start with a few diagrams to explain the differences between a gasoline-powered car and a typical electric car.

A gas-powered car has a fuel tank, which supplies gasoline to the engine. The engine then turns a transmission, which turns the wheels.

Gasoline-powered car
Move your mouse over the parts for a 3-D view.

An electric car, on the other hand, has a set of batteries that provides electricity to an electric motor. The motor turns a transmission, and the transmission turns the wheels.

Electric car
Move your mouse over the parts for a 3-D view.

The hybrid is a compromise. It attempts to significantly increase the mileage and reduce the emissions of a gas-powered car while overcoming the shortcomings of an electric car.

To be useful to you or me, a car must meet certain minimum requirements. The car should be able to:

Drive at least 300 miles (482 km) between re-fueling
Be refueled quickly and easily
Keep up with the other traffic on the road
A gasoline car meets these requirements but produces a relatively large amount of pollution and generally gets poor gas mileage. An electric car, however, produces almost no pollution, but it can only go 50 to 100 miles (80 to 161 km) between charges. And the problem has been that the electric car is very slow and inconvenient to recharge.

A gasoline-electric car combines these two setups into one system that leverages both gas power and electric power. In the next section, you'll learn about two different hybrid structures: a parallel hybrid car and a series hybrid car
Hybrid Efficiency and Performance
The key to a hybrid car is that the gasoline engine can be much smaller than the one in a conventional car and therefore more efficient. Most cars require a relatively big engine to produce enough power to accelerate the car quickly. In a small engine, however, the efficiency can be improved by using smaller, lighter parts, by reducing the number of cylinders and by operating the engine closer to its maximum load.
There are several reasons why smaller engines are more efficient than bigger ones:

The big engine is heavier than the small engine, so the car uses extra energy every time it accelerates or drives up a hill.
The pistons and other internal components are heavier, requiring more energy each time they go up and down in the cylinder.
The displacement of the cylinders is larger, so more fuel is required by each cylinder.
Bigger engines usually have more cylinders, and each cylinder uses fuel every time the engine fires, even if the car isn't moving.
This explains why two of the same model cars with different engines can get different mileage. If both cars are driving along the freeway at the same speed, the one with the smaller engine uses less energy. Both engines have to output the same amount of power to drive the car, but the small engine uses less power to drive itself. But how can this smaller engine provide the power your car needs to keep up with the more powerful cars on the road?
Let's compare a car like the Chevy Camaro, with its big V-8 engine, to our hybrid car with its small gas engine and electric motor. The engine in the Camaro has more than enough power to handle any driving situation. The engine in the hybrid car is powerful enough to move the car along on the freeway, but when it needs to get the car moving in a hurry, or go up a steep hill, it needs help. That "help" comes from the electric motor and battery -- this system steps in to provide the necessary extra power.

The gas engine on a conventional car is sized for the peak power requirement (those few times when you floor the accelerator pedal). In fact, most drivers use the peak power of their engines less than one percent of the time. The hybrid car uses a much smaller engine, one that is sized closer to the average power requirement than to the peak power.

Besides a smaller, more efficient engine, today's hybrids use many other tricks to increase fuel efficiency. Some of those tricks will help any type of car get better mileage, and some only apply to a hybrid. To squeeze every last mile out of a gallon of gasoline, a hybrid car can:

Recover energy and store it in the battery - Whenever you step on the brake pedal in your car, you are removing energy from the car. The faster a car is going, the more kinetic energy it has. The brakes of a car remove this energy and dissipate it in the form of heat. A hybrid car can capture some of this energy and store it in the battery to use later. It does this by using "regenerative braking." That is, instead of just using the brakes to stop the car, the electric motor that drives the hybrid can also slow the car. In this mode, the electric motor acts as a generator and charges the batteries while the car is slowing down.

Sometimes shut off the engine - A hybrid car does not need to rely on the gasoline engine all of the time because it has an alternate power source -- the electric motor and batteries. So the hybrid car can sometimes turn off the gasoline engine, for example when the vehicle is stopped at a red light.

The frontal area profile of a small and large car

Use advanced aerodynamics to reduce drag - When you are driving on the freeway, most of the work your engine does goes into pushing the car through the air. This force is known as aerodynamic drag. This drag force can be reduced in a variety of ways. One sure way is to reduce the frontal area of the car. Think of how a big SUV has to push a much greater area through the air than a tiny sports car.
Reducing disturbances around objects that stick out from the car or eliminating them altogether can also help to improve the aerodynamics. For example, covers over the wheel housings smooth the airflow and reduce drag. And sometimes, mirrors are replaced with small cameras.

Use low-rolling resistance tires - The tires on most cars are optimized to give a smooth ride, minimize noise, and provide good traction in a variety of weather conditions. But they are rarely optimized for efficiency. In fact, the tires cause a surprising amount of drag while you are driving. Hybrid cars use special tires that are both stiffer and inflated to a higher pressure than conventional tires. The result is that they cause about half the drag of regular tires.

Use lightweight materials - Reducing the overall weight of a car is one easy way to increase the mileage. A lighter vehicle uses less energy each time you accelerate or drive up a hill. Composite materials like carbon fiber or lightweight metals like aluminum and magnesium can be used to reduce weight.
All of the hybrid cars on the market utilize some or all of these efficiency tricks. Let's take a look at the hybrid models you can buy right now.

Anyone with experience with A2B Electric Bikes or others?

Nathalie

Anyone have any experience with the A2B Electric Bikes?
http://www.ultramotor.com/us/product/

I'm thinking of getting one (or other brands if you have any other recommendations to look at) to ride to work, I'm about 12 miles from work and with some power-assist it would help be get there faster and not as sweaty as if I completely rode 12 miles on my mountain bike. (I've ridden to work before but my old house was 4 miles from work, now I'll be 12 miles away)

Not sure yet if I want the Hybrid or Metro model..

But in general, I'm wondering how these bikes are on ONLY peddle power? For example, say I want to mainly ride on my own peddle power and then use the electric motor once I get tired (either with or without peddling, although peddling shouldn't be too hard if power-assisted even if I'm tired)

I'm concerned with the bike being heavy (55 lbs or so I believe) how hard it is to peddle..

Anyone with experience on these or other electric bikes?

I have a motorcycle so I'm not looking for only a scooter.. I want the exercise but at the same time 12 miles is too much for me to only peddle to work, especially here in the heat of South Florida.

Thanks

Answer
I would ride the motorcycle to work and buy a nice road bike for the $2,300 that bike would cost you. You can travel at 15 mph very easily on a road bike, that's the max speed on the hybrid and you would have a $1,000 or so left over. If you want to get exercise do it after work when it won't hurt to sweat a little.

Does an electric bike really work?

Hi everyone, I was wondering if a 36 volt 600w conversion kit, new, off ebay would really work??!?!? And if I could simply add it onto my bicycle? Please help! are they worth the money?

Answer
The real problem with these conversion kits is the huge variation in quality. Without knowing what brand, what's included in it, and what type of battery is included, if any, it's impossible to tell.

The best conversions kits for the average bike are the ones with a motor in the front hub and a quality controller. These allow you to leave the standard drive-train alone and let it be an assist to normal pedaling. This provides much greater range than running purely electric. You should look up the laws about the wattage allowed in your state. These are listed under motor vehicle laws since this is most definitely a motor vehicle.

Last is the battery.
Good: Lead-acid deep discharge (not your car battery). Not outrageously expensive and decent life.
Better: Nickel Metal Hydride (NiMH). Better range, lighter, safe and durable.
Best: LiFePO4, or Lithium Iron Phosphate, is safer than your laptop battery, has the best range and durability. It is also the most expensive.

Last issue is of course the charger to keep your battery charged. The kit should include one.

All these little details are why the quality of the kit matters. If they have taken care of these and you are expecting a nice assist for the hills and a great range extender, these kits can be absolutely great.

If you are expecting a motorcycle like experience with long range and high speed, you are better off with an electic scooter or the new Brammo motorcycle available at Best Buy. The Brammo has a roughly 40 mile range (real world) and is a real motorcycle without the hassles of gas.

What are some everyday steps to reduce fossil fuel consumption?

jordan4391

Answer
1 - drive less (if you can walk, bike or take a bus/public transport there, do it)
2 - Check where your electricity comes from? If the plant that produces it is based off natural gas, burning coal, or anything other than nuclear or hydro-electric power (water running through a dam), then use less electricity by turning off the lights, setting the A/C to a higher temp, etc.
3 - Recycle! A lot of products are produced using fossil fuels (plastics, glass, etc)... Recycle your waste from what you consume!

What is the first steps in living "Green"?

bokeatong

I see the polution in the air, how do i get a good start living "green"?

Answer
I would recommend starting in small steps. There are certain areas that have large impacts on green living. For example, it makes absolutely NO sense to place solar panels on a poorly insulated house! So here's my list with the most critical items at the top:

1. Increase efficiency of the building envelope - windows, doors, walls, roof, foundations - through increased insulation and air sealing. $100 worth of caulk can pay for itself in less than a year in some climates. Seal around all windows and doors, along sill plate, at rim joists, and at all attic and basement penetrations. Contact a local Energy Star Home Energy Rater (HERS) in your area to have an analysis of your home completed.

2. Increase the energy efficiency of appliances and equipment. Make sure all HVAC, water heaters, and appliances are Energy Star certfied. Remember that once you increase your envelope efficiency, you can downsize your heating and AC equipment if you are buying new equipment. Insulate hot water heaters and water lines, put timer devices on hot water heaters so that you are only heating water when you need it hot. Tankless water heaters use HUGE amounts of electricity, so if you are on a solar system, they may not be a good idea. Some tankless companies make water heaters that are solar hot water heater-compatible. If you like the idea of tankless, consider a tankless/solar hybrid system.

3. Increase water efficiency. Fix leaks, get low flow toilets and faucets, stop using municipal water for landscaping and lawns (use a rainbarrel to collect water for outdoor uses instead)

4. Stop commuting. Discuss the idea of telecommuting - even if only for a few days each week - to reduce the amount of auto use. I telecommute 100% and my spouse works 5 days a week, for 9 months a year at a location 5 miles from our home. If you can reduce your commute to under 20 miles each way, you may consider purchasing or converting your car to an electric vehicle that you can charge overnight or at work. If you have solar panels on your roof, you can drive for free using the sun's energy. (or for pennies if you have a grid-tied solar system) Walk or ride a bike or high efficiency vehicle to work.

5. Stop mowing lawns. Increase the amount of landscaped area around your home and keep manicured lawn areas minimal. Use low mow grass mixes or xeriscaping depending on your climate. Use native plants to eliminate the need for watering, fertilizing, and mowing. As one book's title calls it, grow food, not lawns. Plant a garden.

6. Install a solar hot water heating system. They pay for themselves very quickly.

7. Make the choice not only to live green, but live healthy. Improve your indoor environment by increasing natural light, fresh air, and indoor plants. Indoor plants purify the air and combat toxins. Increased natural light decreases the amount of artificial light and electricity used. If energy efficient windows are used, bringing in natural light also reduces indoor heat loads by eliminating the need for interior artificial lights to be on durnig the day.

I could go on all day, but I'll stop at 7. Enjoy living green!

Any Electric Mountain Bikes under $400?

Ryan

Something not 300 pounds or ugly and bulky, but with good speed and light weight. Remember, under $400. Thanks.
or under $500.

Answer
"or under $500?"

NO Capital N. Capital O. NO. A true quality electric assist bicycle from Trek costs OVER $2,000.
http://www.trekbikes.com/us/en/collections/electric_assist/t80_plus_gl/#
And it's not a mountain bike.

For the price of just ONE electric assist bike, you could buy THREE of these...

Get off your lazy, fat @ss & ride a real bicycle.

New mountain Bike...Help?

John

I am looking at buying a new mountain bike and converting it to electric...I was thinking about getting the Mongoose Status 3.0 but I couldn't find a single review except on Amazon...any suggestions?
I'm 13, about 120 (I know I'm a lightweight) and 5' 6"...
The reason that I want to convert a mountain bike to electric is because I do a lot of rough street riding, and a hybrid just won't do the trick. Also, I didn't mean full electric, just a lightweight hub motor for use on longer rides. So eff off about the Lego crap...it's a serious question.
Also, I don't really need advice about the electric components, I know my stuff about that.

Answer
Converting it to electric. No. Don't do this. Spend you money getting a nicer bike with less friction and you can go much faster. Or just buy a cheap, old scooter. Why are you doing this? Project?

If you're going to be using it as a mountain bike, it need not be electric, as that's dangerous. If you're using it as a scooter, it need not be a mountain bike: hybrid's. If this is a project and you're 13 and not rich, I'd pick a different project. One of the Lego Robots would make a good project with electricity(i.e. Lego's Mindstorm). Provide more info and I will too.

Kids get so angry these days.

Motor-Assisted Bicycle Question?

Mary R

Can anyone out there tell me if they know of a motor-assisted bicycle (brand name and model) that would fit the following requirements;

* is fitted with pedals that are operable at all times to propel the bicycle;
* weighs not more than 121 lbs. (55 kilograms);
* has no hand or foot operated clutch or gearbox driven by the motor and transferring power to the driven wheel;
* has a piston displacement of not more that 20 cubic inches (50 cubic centimetres); and,
* does not attain a speed greater than 31 mph (50 km/hr) on level ground within a distance of 1.24 Miles (2 km) from a standing start.

Thank you in advance to anyone who can give me an answer.

Answer
My dad used to have something like this (they're called mopeds and are rare, haveing been superseeded by the motor scooter). It had a 1 cylinder 2 stroke air cooled engine with a centrafugal clutch and IV (Infinately Variable) gearbox (effectively a simple automatic gearbox).

You won't find anything like that that doesn't need a lot of TLC to keep it going though.

Far more common nowadays are electrically assisted bikes (using an electric motor and batteries).

What is riding one of the electric power assist bicycles like?

Q. The only thing I've heard is that they even out hills a little. What else have you heard? Are they worth the high price?

Answer
You can buy a nice shop quality bike for the same price as a cheap electric bike. You will benefit from the exercise and be a lot healthier. Don't expect the batteries to last long on the cheap bikes so you end up with a 70 lb bicycle or ending up pedaling harder then a regular bike. Expect to buy a new battery pack every 6 months or so.

What is the best economically priced electric bike for hills ?

Fred E

Under $800

Answer
The better the battery the better the performance of an electric bike. Lead acid batteries are the mainstay to electric bikes in the lower echelon. Lead acid batteries tend to be heavy, bulky and good for relatively short bursts of power then they die. Nimh batteries can better sustain a drag on its power, it tends to be lighter, less cumbersome to manage and the service life of the charge out lasts lead acid batteries by a long shot. Then their are the lithium ion batteries. For the moment they are proven and the best of the best. Most laptop computers use lithium ion batteries. These batteries are better tied to higher performance, lower discharge rates, higher charging capacities, thus higher discharging capacities, not as bulky relatively slim and a reliably stronger pedaling assist as compared to its peers.

The price point for the electric bikes in the US is directly related to the type of battery. Electric bikes from Currie that can be purchased at a big box store can be purchase below the $800 price point with a lead acid battery. Giant and Trek both use lithium ion batteries. Their bikes are priced from $1800 to 2,600 USD. The long view would be how lucky are you to purchase a less expensive bike for $800 and you will get a trouble free 5 year service life. If you have to keep putting money into this great idea we know as an electric bike to keep it on the road, then the return on investment will be delayed or may never come. If you purchase two bikes at the $800 price point and allow for inflation of 5% or greater due to increased consumer demand and the product cycle of improvements; the cost of the two bikes within a 3-5 year period equals the original cost of a Giant or Trek sample from jump.

Best.

I am looking for an electric bike for exercise for under $500. I want electric because my area is very hilly and I want to get exercise but I'm just not in shape enough to make it up the hills without some help. Ideas for the best in my price range?

Answer
Forget the electric bike they are hard to pedal and using the motor wont give you any exercise. If you want exercise get a used stationary bike off of Craig's list or better yet go to the local bike shop and get a good hybrid bike. It will take time to be able to climb hills, if you have to get off and walk.

in comparision of hiking, biking is more effective for losing weight?

Hillary

my coach tell me that inappropriate exericise can make you more strong.
so i dont want muscle,i just want to lose my fat
http://www.aurora-bike.com/products/aurora-bike/New.html

Answer
"Strong" doesn't necessarily mean "bulky". There are lots of female athletes who are plenty strong, and plenty hot, ie, they don't look like the incredible Hulk. Runners, cyclists, and triathletes especially fall in the non-Hulk category, although they tend to be less chesty due to low body fat. Either you misunderstood your "coach" or he's more than a little confused. Women are not hormonally equipped to bulk up unless they spend excessive time and effort in the weight room.

Hiking and biking are both effective at burning calories, which of course is the objective when you're trying to shed fat. Neither does much in the way of building bulk muscle. There is no reason to choose. Do both, and more. You're more likely to keep up your exercise program if you're not doing the same old thing day in day out.

I'm not sure what your link has to do with your question. An electric bike isn't exercise.

dirt bike for a 13 year old girl?

Q. i only know a little about them and i really want to ride them. my parents had them when they where younger and at my dads cousins house they have a track because he races. i don't want something slow and i don't want anything super fast just something in the middle. im about 5`2 if that helps at all. could you tell me the basics of riding and what do you think would fit me best by the way it would probably be used from craigslist and under 1000 i was looking at like something from 1997 or up but i wouldn't really trust one that old. also what gear would i need.

What is the brightest bike head light with the longest lasting battery?

Hey guys,

I'm looking for the brightest bike light with a HUGE run times. Under $300...

Answer
Technically speaking I think the brightest lights are measured in lumens. You will find no standard of measurement for bike lights. Some will point to candle power, watts or lumens. They all appear bright. When I looked at Light in Motion I was convinced on the measurements in lumens to satisfy the same question you raise. The link below further explains the thinking by Light in Motion.

LED strip light installation?

Arif

I wanted to install LED strip lights on my bike and i really dont know what excatly do i need. Can some one please help me with things i need and also if any one can find me a diagram of wiering?

i know i need the following:
1) Strip lights.
2) On/Off switch.
3) Fuse.

Thanks,
I agree on that but looking at my knowledge i think i feel comfortable with having on/off switch rather then with ignition.

do i need anything else from there or no? some one mentioned to me that i would need some converter box orr something like that, can some one help me find on on ebay of what excately it is?.

Thanks,

Thanks,
I did went to couple of mechanic shops and they are rangeing me from $350 to $500 which is pretty rediciolus, thats why i decided to do it myself. I did alot of research and to be honest it seemes pretty simple and easy to me its just a matter of connecting the LED's with switch and to the battery.

Since i do not know the law for NYC on bike neon lights i think i would want to have that on/off switch so i can turn it on when ever i want and turn it off when ever i need to.

Please throw me any suggestions you have.

Thanks,

Answer
I've installed LED lights on several bikes in the past year. I wire all of mine using a relay to activate the lights whenever the ignition is on, mostly because when you use a switch, and wire direct to the battery, you will eventually leave the power on for the LEDs and could run your battery down!

The LEDs I use are WATERPROOF SMD LEDs, which I purchase in 5-meter rolls or the silicone encased 12" long strips of SMD LEDs. Either work well, and can be purchased from Amazon, eBay, or locally for <$20 for the strip-lights or <$10-for a set of 4 or more of the 12" silicone-encased units.

Place the lights where you want them, under the tank, seat, fenders, etc., wire them to the switch or relay, and you're good to go... really it only takes a few minutes if you know where you want them, and know your way around the bike's electrical system.

As for NYC regulations... check with your local law enforcement or DMV regulations, but I'm pretty sure you are restricted to no flashing lights, blue may be illegal anywhere on the bike, red can only face to the rear, and amber cannot face rear. White should be legal as long as it does not face rear as well.

Tips for using stationary bike for weight loss?

emily

I am looking to set realistic weight loss goals in 2011. I am not looking for a miracle but would like to loose about 50 pounds (approx 1lb per week)

I used to be in weight watchers when I was younger, but now I can't afford that. I also can't afford to go to a gym. I am also a newlywed who now lives in a dangerous area due to financial burdens, so its not a good idea to go walking outside.

BUT what I do have is a stationary bike that I bought when I was younger as well that my mom will be bringing up to me in the next couple of weeks.

It is not electric, it does have a battery operated, speedometer and odometer, but I am not sure how accurate they are. I read somewhere a couple years ago that 20-30 minutes was the recommended amount of walking for a healthy adult and an overweight adult should walk for 50 minutes. About how many minutes on the bike is this? Would you bike for an hour? (Obviously I would probably take breaks and do arm exercises or something in between or just split it into 30 mins morning and afternoon)

What are your thoughts?

Answer
I'm sort of in your boat and here's what I've learned (although I can't swear to it's accuracy). My Dr told me that I HAD to work more and and exercise bike seems to be the best fit for me. My blood pressure, cholesterol, and weight were all dangerously high. My blood sugars were borderline diabetic and my 'good' cholesterol is low.

Diet and meds helped for much-but after 6 months, I seemed to hit a plateau and that's when I started working on the bike. This was about 6 weeks ago. I discovered that 'recommended time to get 'benefit' begins (like you said) at 20 minutes and longer is better. In fact I've been told that even if it means pushing myself a little less in order to build up endurance, longer is better (although I've a hunch that you need to go hard enough to work up a good sweat).I started out by doing 5 miles, which took about 20 minutes for me then-and that gave me a good workout. I've since worked up to 10 miles in about 30 minutes---and now I've slowed down somewhat and am doing 15 miles a 'sitting' in about 50 minutes. In a few days I intend to start doing 20 miles at a time and hope to do it in about 65 minutes.

I had another blood work with the Dr a couple weeks ago-he said that even with the meds, he is shocked at the improvement I've achieved in the last 7 months since my first appt with him. Wt down almost 30 lbs, cholesterol down almost 150 pts, blood sugar down to acceptable levels. I wish you well

If you do a web search you should easily find several sites that will show you how many calories you burn at different intensity levels for your current wt and sex. I find them interesting and a source to help keep me going

I'm getting a new bike, i currently own a crf230f, and people tell me I am very skilled, I'm 14 and 6'3. Which bike would suit me, and please don't say get a yamaha or a honda, because I know I want one of these two bikes.
Cost doesn't matter btw.

you cant be very skilled if you ride a crf230. that bike will hold you back from you full potential. not baggin you just sayin, you can only get so good on a bike like that. KTM four strokes are behind the eight ball. the 11 isnt "better" than the 12 some people just prefer it over the newer model because they dont like the new linkage although the electric start is pretty mint. every seems to have different opinions and the general opinion is the kwaka is better. for 12 it has two injectors which gives heaps more power than the gutless 2011 model. they sorted the suspension and its pretty sweet. id say the kawi is better bike and cheaper to run. when you say money isnt a problem, you mean your parents are paying for every thing? 14 year olds dont have that type of money. when i was 14 the best i could do was a 2001 yz250f. the suzuki is probs the best bike and yamaha is mid way but is by far the most reliable. i bought a 2010 yamie for that reason only. no blocked injectors, no busted cranks like honda, and well over 100 hours out of piston and rings if you look after it. if just between green and orange, go the green. its better and way cheaper to run. the ktm is stupidly expensive to run if keeping it geniune. out of all bikes, go suzuki or yam. suzuki is the best, yamaha last the longest. to put ktm into perspective, dungey went to ktm and said the bike simply isnt competitive so he and roger built a hole no bike. dungey is not on a official ktm bike, it just has kato stickers on it. saying you are very skilled at 14 and on a 230 make you sound cocky by the way. you prob just ride fire trails. very skilled is lorreta lynn stuff. if you were skilled you would what you want from a bike. id just stay with any Japanese bike, since your comming off one, it takes slightly different ride style to get the kato working. oh and ktm has got pathetic bottom end so if ou ride tight stuff, stay away from kato.

The profile picture is not me. its my mom.
please be a 2012.

Answer
Ummm... Kinda hard to say. Which 2012 Honda doesn't have a good stock gas tank, engine, springs (suspension right?), and a nice pair of brakes? I personally wouldn't buy a 2012 dirt bike simply because you can get one a few years old for darn near lot half the money. You need a good price, but it's got to be a 2012, right? Why not a used 2010? You need electric start, you're 4'5", so you automatically need a detuned trail bike, like a CRF80F. Oh, almost forgot, it's gotta be cool looking. I say get pops to buy a cheap used 2002-ish XR80R, or a 50, whatever fits you best, and get some seat time.

Should probably go with Cody on this one.

Would this be legal on uk roads/paths?

Hey, im wondering if this electric bicycle would be legal on UK's roads and paths?
http://stealthelectricbikesunitedkingdom.com/the-bikes.html
Top speed: 30mph or 50mph depending on which bike

Answer
Both are illegal for use on public roads and paths. An electric bike must be limited to 15 mph under power, although there is nothing to stop you peddling it (or free wheeling down hill) faster if you can. It also can not exceed 200w, the one you have linked to is 750w.
You must also be over 14 years old to ride one.

Yamaha MT-03 and Kawasaki Eliminator 250 - Electric problems?

ChiosNic

My partner is looking to buy either of these two bikes. Living on a Greek island he is concerned whether they have a reputation for problems with the electrics. We have an excellent mechanic nearby for 'nuts and bolts' problems but anything more 'technical' might be difficult.

Hands on experience with either greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

Thanks for all the info. Its not goats we have to worry about in the village, its the wrinklies who are not expecting anything faster than a donkey and just cross the road anywhere!

Answer
Hi
I have an mt-03 great bike load of fun to throw about!
The problem is like most new bikes the MT has an ecu chip which does require a Yamaha dealer with a laptop/software to reset certain things like immoblisers etc.if they go wrong and since they are built in italy they can go wrong!
The engine is bullet proof as it's been around a longtime made by morini of italy.the valves need checking at 8000miles,oil filter needs changing at 600miles and every 4000miles after that or once a year,
also it's fuel injected not carb.
Electrics are simple really no different from any other bike, the odd fuse can go but easy to change.
but the things your partner should really think about is the tyres;
As they are 'road' tyres not meant for any kind of sand/grit or bad surfaces.... u'll slide off when the firstime a goat/donkey comes out of somewhere unexpectedly!
Then there's the warranty (2yrs) you get and "we" mt owners have had problems with the clocks and paint finish on the oiltank at the front/bottom of the bike and if it's not serviced by a yam dealer they can void your warranty (if your buying from new).
any way it's a gr8 bike have a look at the mtownersclub in the uk or if your greek i think they have 1 to.
