QnA

If I made a simple generator powered by a bike, would I be able to hook it up to a wet cell battery to recharge it, and then use the battery to power various appliances (lights, fans, microwave, computer, etc...?) How long do you think it would take to charge such a battery and how long would it last?

Answer
You could hook one up. It could only be used to power items which run on 12 volt DC, unless you use an inverter. Any battery you use would not last but a few minutes when powering more than a light or two. The effort you would have to expend in charging the battery would greatly outweigh the usefulness you would get out of it.

Why do people suggest new bikers start with a bike with lower engine displacement?

Dd

*Before anyone makes any assumptions, I am not looking to explain why I want a more powerful bike as my first. I haven't even taken a class yet; I've just been doing some reading to educate myself on the proper way to get into biking. I am not really considering any kind of bike until I take a class and see if I even enjoy riding, but I am leaning towards a small, light, low powered used bike to practice on first.

Virtually everything I have read has said first time bikers should stick to small, light bikes with lower cc. I've heard from a few people it depends on the person but the vast majority of the literature I've got my hands on has said its an accident waiting to happen because the bike is too "powerful" but they never elaborate on what they mean by "powerful". I understand that smaller and lighter bikes handle more easily in terms of making turns, but what exactly do they mean by "power"? Is it speed? Acceleration? Both?

I have gathered that bigger bikes tend to accelerate faster, and the logic is that if a beginner is on one of these more powerful bikes and accidentally accelerates too quickly, they could panic and lose control. Whereas if they were on a bike that accelerates slower, they would be able to recover more easily. Is that the concern, or am I misunderstanding something?

Other people who say it depends on the rider seem to believe that so long as the rider isn't trying to intentionally race or show off on the road they will be fine with a more powerful bike. Am I correctly understanding their argument?

Thanks for any clarification. One thing that stinks about books is you can't ask a question if the author isn't clear enough in their explanation.
@Candid That's exactly what I do not understand. What exactly do you mean by "limit"? I understand how physically larger and physically heavier bikes are harder to turn, so that makes sense. But can you explain why engine displacement matters? Hope that makes more sense, thanks

Answer
All the above good answers have there points. but I would like to add:

A larger displacement bike presents more opportunities for disaster. These potential disasters are overcome by acquired recovery skills. Either I've become more skilled or more mellowed out with age but; in my past I didn't come back from a ride on a 1,000cc sport bike without a recovery . (Now I can't recall a recent recovery.)

When I take the wife's 250 Ninja out to fill up the tank, charge battery, transit, etc. I in my memory have never had the power to break traction forcing my recovery skills into use. (that may just be fair weather or chance?) Years ago I gained recovery skills on a even smaller dirt bike but it required a wet surface.

Now I have experienced rides that I really don't care to repeat; being caught in the rain up in mountains and having to choose between going as fast as I can vs. deteriorating sunlight, being caught in snow and recovering, add loose debris on surfaces catching me by surprise and slipping and recovering. Throttle control and instinctive reactions must be correct! A larger bike has a wide window of error that isn't even present in a smaller displacement motorbike.

So what choice are you going to have for your introduction to a sport bike? A large displacement bike that will require finely honed skills to prevent or to recover from any slight speed or throttle error? Or will you choose to learn on a milder bike that will but rarely does present these issues that require fast correct responses to prevent a complete disaster?

I don't care how careful, cautious, mature,or responsible you are or call yourself you will place yourself in these situations that will require recovery skills. Wouldn't you prefer to experience them on the outside of the riding envelope instead of at every corner you enter too fast , apply too much throttle too early,or unseen surface debris on a turn with excessive throttle and need recovery skills to prevent a disaster?

Will the large countries (China, U.S., Russia) all fight each other with nuclear weapons to drill the last drops of oil? Or will our dependence on oil have diminished enough for it to not matter?

Answer
It takes oil to fight a war. More than likely oil will be so expensive that people will abandon their cars before a war can happen. Oil will be reserved for the rich and governments. Chinese will ride their bicycles again and Americans will get back on horses or electric cars.

Trust me, we will know it is coming because, gas prices will rocket up from the current $3.80 to $30.80 and then to $308 a gallon. I process will take many years. By that time, we may be able to find a mini- nuclear reactor at Wal-mart for a few thousand dollars.

In Texas do you have to have a license to drive a gas powered scooter?

sum1sbabyd

I will be going to school at Stephen F. Austin next year and was wondering if I need a license to drive a gas powered scooter(like a vespa) on campus. I know they're allowed on the campus but I don't know if I have to have a license for one.

Answer
License and helmet in Texas. The alternative is electric bicycles pedal assist machine like the Schwinn Campus, and World. My commuter bicycle is the Schwinn Continental 30 volt battery pack really great to silently ride around. On the bike paths it embarrasses many high performance riders. Vespas Are not cheep any more and the two stroke motors are dirty running at least you still get some exercise with a bike.

Norway Orthopedic Devices Investment Opportunities, Analysis and Forecasts to 2017 - new market research report:
The LEV industry is growing fast, with greatest strength in China today, but also clearly emerging fast in the rest of the world. Up until the last couple of years, ebike sales were concentrated in China, Japan, and the EU. In the last few years, nearly every nation has bought ebikes from China, and in some cases, the volumes are now significant. Sales will reach 130 million yearly before 2025, make it one of the world's largest industries. The 206 page report encompassing over 70 brands gives forecasts of sales numbers, unit prices and total market value for 2011-2021. 13 market drivers are balanced against many negative factors that are discussed in the report, which has 69 figures and tables and detail on standards and legislation.

LEVs are one of the largest and fastest growing electric vehicle markets. A Light Electric Vehicle LEV is a land vehicle propelled by an electric motor that uses an energy storage device such as a battery or fuel cell, has two or three wheels, and typically weighs less than 100kg. Most LEVs are and will remain ebikes. These are Power on Demand bikes controlled with a throttle. A significant percentage of ebikes sold are scooters in that they have the driver's feet rest on a platform - they are not straddled by the driver.

Today, the LEV industry is dominated by large bicycle companies, due to their access to distribution. We explain why, in the future, these companies will face major competition from, and may be pushed aside by car, motorcycle, and car parts companies. Supply chains for motors, batteries, chassis parts, and nearly every LEV component exist in Asia, primarily in China, Taiwan, Japan, and newly emerging South Korea. We reveal where the highest profits will be obtained in future and the opportunities in components as these change with lithium-ion batteries of several generations and supercapacitors being increasingly employed, for example. The more demanding future technical requirements of users and standards are investigated.

Adjoining sectors are also discussed such as heavy electric motorcycles and the bigger sector of mobility vehicles for the disabled, where ten year forecasts are presented. New crossover vehicles between LEVs and these sectors are presented.

Which yamaha dual sport bike is better?

Vertigo

I was looking the 2011 WR250X, the 2011 WR250R and the 2012 TW200. I prefer the TW2000 cause is cheaper and dont know it looks nice. But i will like to know the pros and cons of each one, nore concentrated in the TW200. Thanks

Answer
Rule out the wr250x as its street tires will not be good off road.

The wr250r is a dual sport, powerful for a 250 and tall, so you will want to sit on one and see if it fits. While it won't be too comfortable on a highway it is fast enough for one. It would be a good off road bike based on the power and tires.

The TW200 has been sold for years so its easy to find one used, though I think very early models had kick starting only, so check the one you are looking at has electric start. It will be about half the price of the 250, less if you are buying used. Its 200cc engine is not very powerful, so it will not be fast enough for highway driving (top speed is around 60mph). It will be ok on easy trails, but a bit underpowered on anything with steep hills. If it doesn't matter to you about the higher speed and power of the 250, or the 250 is too tall, then I think the TW200 would be a good in town and trail bike, and fine for country riding, and will get really good gas mileage.

Need advise on getting electric bike that goes at least 20 mph, 40 mile range?

LTD1

What electric bike should I get?
I need it to go at least 20 mph and at least 40 mile range, I don't mind doing some pedaling to get long range. Also, I want it to be super silent.
Is it better to convert a standard bike or to get an already assembled electric bike?
What should I expect to pay for this?

Thanks.

Answer
You will need to get a kit as most pre-assembled ebikes wont go over 20mph.

you can do this for about $1500 and your bike. this would be easy on a recumbent.

Q. I want to convert my current bike to an electric bike for less than $200. I'm really not that handy with electronics, but if some instruction to put A into B I can do it, I just wouldn't be able to figure out that A goes into B with out the instructions. Anyways, does anyone have some tips? All the sites that I've found are very unprofessional or non-specific so it's really hard to figure out anything from them. I would be willing to buy a kit.

Answer
An electric bike has to have a motor, controller, throttle, and battery pack.
Hub motors are the easiest to install.
overview:
You remove your old front wheel, put the new wheel where the old one was, align the wheel in the slots, adjust the brakes, secure the controller and the battery pack on the rear rack, put the throttle on the handle bars, route the wires safely and tie-wrap, connect the connectors together, turn every thing on and test.

To be of much use, you have to have at least 250watts, and hopefully more.

Largo scooters has a decent kit (go Hub)for $600 and is nice. Every once in a while you can find a WE or BD36 for maybe $350.

A Largo kit has keyed connectors so you cannot hook it up wrong.

Can an electric motor take different voltages?

SILVRSWT

I am interested in buying an electric bike that has 2 batteries that opperate at 12v @ 10 amp hours. They are designed to work together to deliver 24v to a 450 watt (peak) motor at the front wheel. Unfortunately these are heavy SLA batteries, and I would like to replace them with state of the art Nanophosphate Litihium Ion batteries.

Now the kicker: I can only find 36v versions for use in DeWalt power tools (though they are very energy dense).

So what I am wondering is if I can buy 2 / 4 of these and wire them to deliver no more than 36v continuous to the 24v motor and will it improve performance or just burn up the components.

Also as an added question, if it is not possible to run 36 volts directly is there a controller that could accomplish this.

Thanks!

The motor is from Currie Technologies, specialists in electric bikes.
I should add that the motor is DC as will be the current delivered to it.

Answer
Just replacing the 24V pair of batteries with a 36V group will very likely cause something to fail. It is possible that a controller could be designed to allow a 36V group of batteries to work with the motor, but it isn't something that you are likely to be able to easily find and mate up to the existing motor.

Additional information:
If you get a 36V PWM controller and set the current limit to the maximum continuous rating of the motor, that might keep you out of trouble. If the motor has a higher short-time current rating that you want to utilize, that might be difficult to set up.

Look at: http://www.dartcontrols.com/

More additional information:
It looks to me like Currie Technologies offers some models with a 3X12V 36V battery package, 36V controller and 450W motor.

or a bike generator (or is that the same as an alternator, im new at all this) im starting a project electric bike, and looking for ways to keep it running longer than the 3 or 4 hrs that it runs now...will this idea work or does anyone else have ant better ideas without breaking the bank.

Answer
It is simpler than that. If you go down hill the motor will generate and charge the battery. The problem is battery efficiency but if you use super capacitors instead of batteries you will be able to re-coupe some of your energy. With clever electronics you can get some power back when you brake but it is all a bit expensive. The simple bike is a really good mode of transport and has little room for improvement. I did assume you were not trying to invent a perpetual motion machine.

How can I lose weight from my legs besides using the bike?

Julissa

I'm 19 and I have big legs i mean I'm skinny and everything and everyone loves my kegs but me. I've always had a issue w them.. Besides going to the gym or buying a electric bike or watever wat r other ways to tone or lose weight from my legs??

Answer
bikes are not good for legs, once you lose fat mass you increase muscle mass, mine are huge and I still hold my HS leg press record.

The best way to lose is to target muscles individually, do a lot of stretches. Also try endurance based activities.

Try and avoid hills while cycling or running and stay on the flats.

Swimming would be my best suggestion.

I'm looking to make it though a Canadian winter without paying my electric bill.
I only need to be able to power a laptop, my phone, and a lamp.
I'm looking for options under $200.
I've already thought about making a bike powered generator, and I'm also looking into the cost of a thermoelectric generator that runs off wood, but I'm still not sure what the best option might be...
Does anyone have any cheap but effective suggestions?

Answer
Well, under 200 dollars probably won't happen, sorry.

You can get a 600 watt wind turbine for under 500 dollars, but you'll also need some batteries, and the rest of the kit.

And in Canada, I'd worry about heat too.

I suppose if that's not an issue, you could rig up a mechanical generator from scratch, but that will take a fair bit of effort, and you'd probably want batteries to go with it.

What will happen to NASCAR when the air pollution activists get their way?

uncleneal

It is coming... the environmentalists are going after NASCAR, Formula One, Grand Prix, and drag racing because they use a lot of fossil fuels and pollute the environment... what will happen to the sport if they place restrictions on air flow and fuel use?
I know some of you have answered that it doesn't use enough fuel, but some will argue that it does use too much fuel compared to average cars, and the amount of air pollution put out is not restricted in any way at all right now...

Answer
First of all, race cars cause little to no pollution, even on petrolium gasoline with alot of lead in it. There is a simple scientific explanation for this. The emissions from vehicles, industrial facilities etc., are infact the chemical components that do not get completely burned off in the prossesses. Because racing engines are more powerful than the rest, (even though the milleage is much worse because of this) they actually have a much more complete burn of the fuel, & the more the horsepower, the more this is true. Infact, some levels of petrolium gasoline burning race engines in Drag Racing (like in Pro Stock & Pro Modified for example) actually achieve complete burn of the gas, thus leaving zero emissions from thier exhaust. The Canadian federal government banned racing gas back in the '90's, but that didn't last long because they were wrong, & now we are allowed to use the high-lead racing gas here again. However, many Drag Racers who race in classes that do not have much restriction on what type of fuel you can use, actually are now using ethanol or methanol (both are types of alcohol) for thier fuel because it is only half the cost of the racing gas, runs cooler (meaning the engine temperatures are lower), & makes more horsepower than the petrolium gasoline does. I have been told that the gas is more consistant for indexed & bracket racing, but many people are opting for the alcohol due to the gas prices. There are a few classes where the petrolium gasoline is still required. These are Stock, Super Stock, Pro Stock, & some (if not all) of the classes in the NSCA-style "Fast Street Car Drag Racing" scene. That's mainly because the cars on the public roads are still mostly using conventional (tho now mostly unleaded) gas & these classes have to maintain a certain amount of similarity to what the public are driving. NASCAR is the same way. As for the Indy Cars, they have never, ever been forced to use alcohol for fuel. They have been running on alcohol for several decades now, by thier own choice, for some of the same reasons that kind of fuel is popular in Drag Racing (except for cost, as alcohol fuel used to be twice the price of racing gas at one time). There are alcohol-only classes in Drag Racing that have been around for several decades too. Top Fuel Dragsters run on rocket propellant-based fuel, believe it or not. As for the enviromentalist going after NASCAR etc., some of thes enviromentalists don't really know that much about the enviroment, & they can't force anyone to do anything anyways. Racing's sanctioning bodies (NASCAR, IRL, F1, NHRA, IHRA, etc.) are the governing bodies in racing, & the politicians can have some effect ofcourse, but they need to please as many of thier people as they can. Ofcourse facts are fact, tho sometimes facts can be ignored. I worry a little, as you never know what can happen. I worry about the future of antique & classic cars too. Will people still be able to restore cars to original & still be able to enjoy them in the future? Only time will tell. These cars too could also run on ethanol or methanol. All they need to do is use different materials for gaskets & fuel lines than the original materials. This does not visually look too different from the original look. They could change the jetting in the carburetors to run better on the alcohol, which is internal & does not effect the original look. The fuel lines could have a coating on the outside to look original. Sorry to get a little off topic there. Also of note, I have a buddy up here in Canada that races in NEDRA (National Electric Drag Racing Association) down in the states. This is not a scale model racing group. These folks actually drive full-sized electric cars, electric bikes, & electric-powered dragsters, competing in electric-powered Drag Racing events! Some people would like to have an excuse to put a stop to motorsports, especially Drag Racing, any excuse, just because they happen to be predjudice, or don't understand. I consider these people to have a serious lack of morals & I consider it as serious as racism. That is how I honestly feel. There are some people who believe that Drag Racing is sort of like "the sleeping giant of the sports, entertainment, & hobby industries", & it would not surprse me if someday in the future Drag Racing becomes bigger than soccer throughout the world. A car that runs on something other than gas (school essay)?

This is for a school essay. The topic is, "if you could invent anything, what would it be?" And I thought a car that runs on something other then gas. Now the 2nd half of the essay is, "how would you go about making it?" I'm only in high school with NO background in engineering whatsoever. I would gladly accept any answers/help/advice, thank you!

Answer
Have you given up on the water car then?

My personal favorite would be a practical velomobile that could be used for commuting. http://pedalyourselfhealthy.org/ This is essentially a three wheeled recumbent bicycle that is covered with a fairing. (wind screen) They are made but perhaps you could "invent" a cheap convertible that would become very popular. Popularizing such a vehicle would recognize that for a personal transportation system to reach a mass market the correct supporting infrastructure must also exist. So we really can't think just about the vehicle.

Second choice would be an electric vehicle system that did not depend upon batteries. See my long answer here with cites: http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20130219144323AAAji2Z

The third choice I will offer is a vehicle that runs on heat. This combines two technologies already in existence. The first is a stirling engine. This works by applying heat to one side of the engine. An efficient design would be to use the quasi turbine stirling engine: https://sites.google.com/site/quasiturbines/enginetypes/etypestirling For the heat source we would use chemical heat batteries similar to those researched by MIT that are charged with solar energy: http://cleantechnica.com/2011/07/29/21st-century-stable-thermal-energy-storage/

I am sure you might come up with a few yourself if you spent some time doing a little research into "alternative engines" or "alternative vehicles."

Best of luck with your essay.

How do I make a motor for a electric bike what pieces do I need ?

Answer
To make a high-quality one that can go fairly fast, you probably couldn't.

On the other hand, if you don't want to go above 15-20mph, you could probably make one for under $100. Buy a cheap broken electric scooter. Chances are the motor on it still works and you can use that. Those motors can get you going close to 20mph with the right gear ratios.

A motor controller could also be obtained from a scooter, or, if the motor you are using is not significantly powerful (<36v), you could probably buy a brand new controller for fairly cheap.

Batteries may cost a little more, but you could get sealed lead acid batteries for under $100 for sure.

Plus, their are the little things like the throttle, which is generally a potentiometer. These can be very cheap on Ebay.

Should China move the capital from Beijing to somewhere in the interior heartland because of overcrowding?

Q. I know that South Korea is looking to move their capital out of Seoul because of the same reason.
I read this article on the BBC News about the proliferation of electric bicycles in Beijing:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/asia-pacific/8538221.stm

Then I thought, wouldn't moving the capital to an interior location help in economic development there?
Would you support such a move?

Answer
Most traditional capitals tend to be the largest city around. Though some countries, like Australia, have their capital in the what amounts to the countryside (canberra).

China has a huge government, moving it would be difficult. Certainly many of the government people might not want to go.

In addition, beijing is one of the traditional capitals. They could move the capital to Nanjing (another traditional capital). While nanjing is smaller, it is much more crowded than Beijing.

Finally, I really have not seen many reasonably sized cities that were overcrowded. For this reason many citis are moving their government functions out of the city to the surrounding countryside.

How can I figure out how fast my electric bike would go?

morbeckbra

I'm trying to put together an electric bike, with parts from http://www.electricscooterparts.com/. I'm using a standard bike frame that weighs about 30 pounds. How can I calculate how fast a hypothetical electric powered bike will go just from looking at the voltages and amperages of the batteries/motors listed on the website?

Answer
wrong data. you need motor rpm and drive train ratios. voltage and amperage gives you power, watts or horsepower. which will let you figure how long it will take to get to top speed.

example: a hub motor with no gears, running at 250 rpm will move a 26 inch bike wheel at about 20 mph.

Answer
You are comparing a far lighter but very inefficient vehicle (motorcycle) to a far heavier but very efficient vehicle (Nissan Leaf,) and I am left to wonder what you want.

Your bike is getting 60 mpg on a good day. The Leaf will get a little less than twice that with no oil changes or other maintenance.

As a heavier and enclosed vehicle the leaf will give you more protection from the elements.

The motorcycle insurance is cheaper than that of a car because the smart people there have noticed it is more likely that you will be killed on a bike than you will kill someone. This will probably make the motorcycle cheaper with more personal risk...

and lets face it ... thrills... although the first time I drove an EV it reminded me of the acceleration of a 750cc bike.

What kind of motorbike should I get?

Penny

I'm 14, about 1.68m and 65kgs. I want to get a dirt bike to learn to ride on, and to ride around my farm. I was thinking something like a Honda CRF 230F, or something like that. I have never ridden before, but I'm a fast learner, and am pretty good at driving quad bikes. Also, if it matters at all, I'm a girl.
Please help?

Answer
You could go for a 230... They are big bikes though and have a lot of bottom end power.. but not much top end... great if you want to slowly power up a steep hill.. not so good if you want a bit more speed and power at the top end.. I personally would get like a Suzuki RM 125... they are light, fast, ALOT of power.. especially at top end.. cheaper, easy and cheaper to fix... the 230 is big and heavy.. the upsides of it are electric start and you are less likely to flip it on a steep hill... but for fun (disregarding safety) id go for a light two stroke machine :)... You will probably flip the 125 up a steep hill though.. especially at first.. but yeah.. its alot cheaper and easy to fix.. lighter as well.. just be sure to get the fuel to two stroke oil mix correct and dont use a cheap oil.. it will wear out your piston rings... To be honest ive ridden plenty 230's... i got board real quick.. but if you dont mind a bit less speed and adrenaline.. go for it :) hope i helped.

Is a motorcycle practical?

Have a GRE

My husband and I need a second vehicle and I really want a motorcycle, but is it practical? I think Im safe to assume that a motorcylce gets better gas mileage than a car right? But by how much? Of course we will still have the car to get groceries and to haul around stuff. The motorcylce is mainly for me to get back and forth from work and school because i work in the city and my husband works closer. Oh and by the way Ive been riding dirt bikes and motorcycles for years so yes I know what Im doing lol. So, what do you think?

Answer
As a 'motorcycle only' kinda guy, I may be biased! But looking at it logically, yes it is.

To answer your sub-question, yes motorcycles get better mileage than cars - although it has to be considered what bike you're talking about. An average 500cc twin for example can get 50-70mpg, but a litre sized sportsbike really isn't much better than your average 'sensible' car. It very much depends how you ride of course - burying the needle in the redline or using maximum exceleration doesn't help! The main benefit (fuel wise) is that you make more efficient use of the fuel, by safely filtering you're not sitting stationery while fuel is being pointlessly burned away.

The other issue is weather, you really need good gear if you're going to make a go of it. You can buy an average textile jacket for £70-140, it will last 3 months of British weather. A good investment is paying a little more for long lasting and quality gear, such as Rukka. For many years I bought cheap waterproof trousers for £60'ish and they lasted 3 to 6 months. I've had my Rukka trousers for 3 years now and they've never let me down - and that includes in severe downpours. They cost £180 BUT they're guarranteed for 5 years - so do the maths and they work out cheaper! As yet I've not managed to save up for one of their £400+ jackets...that's just too much in one lump!

If you didn't have children I would even suggest selling the car and just hiring one when you need it. For £25 you can get a reasonable sized car for a day, all taxed, mot'd and insured. That's not applicable for you so I won't go on!

In this petrol dependant world we live in, you may even want to save money by considering an electric scooter for the shorter journeys your husband makes. It's not macho but large cc's and short journeys are not a good mix for maintaining reliability. An example (top end) electric scooter is a Vectrix (I may have mis-spelt), here is the spec:

100% charge takes 3 hours (cost equivalent to boiling the kettle for a brew)
80% in 2 hours)
60-70mile range
62mph top speed
re-charges going downhill
has a reverse gear(possible due to weight)
Informative display (precise)
3metre charging cable with typical 3 pin UK plug
£0.00 Road TAX.
Battery lasts approx 10 years
downside is price tag: £5,500. :-(

Motorcycles do need more TLC than cars, for example a chain driven (shaft is easier to live with, but boring) bike needs regular lubing and adjustment - although the latter is a more regular thing for powerful bikes. Then there's tyres - bikes do wear them out quicker than cars - and you can't go and buy cheap rubber as you need stability and grip.

Then there's the safety - "everyone on the road is an idiot". To ensure your children continue to have parents I would advise you enroll in some sort of 'advanced' training. There are many organisations and the police organise this themselves, although there are others. IAM and RoSPA immediately come to mind, These are very different in skill levels and IAM is generally much much easier than RoSPA, but nonetheless beneficial.

Just something to consider, hope that helps!

Keep the rubber side down!

Electric bike conversion kit that recharges as you pedal?

Minh

Basically what's in the question just wondering if there are any electric bike conversion kits that will partially recharge while you pedal. Kind of like a hybrid; and if you guys have any could you point me to them?

Answer
no
recharge as you pedal?
that would be about .001% efficient

if you are going to pedal, why not let THAT run the bike
instead of pushing a generator, letting that charge a battery, letting the battery run a motor
all of which have losses

just charge from the wall for about 1 cent a day

there is no need to 'charge' from pedaling

wle.

What is riding one of the electric power assist bicycles like?

Q. The only thing I've heard is that they even out hills a little. What else have you heard? Are they worth the high price?

Answer
You can buy a nice shop quality bike for the same price as a cheap electric bike. You will benefit from the exercise and be a lot healthier. Don't expect the batteries to last long on the cheap bikes so you end up with a 70 lb bicycle or ending up pedaling harder then a regular bike. Expect to buy a new battery pack every 6 months or so.

Is it illegal to ride a motor scooter around in your neighborhood?

Audrey McC

My child just got a little kid motorcycle, which goes max 10 mph and is battery powered, and i want to know if it's illegal to ride it around the neighborhood.

Answer
sorry it doesn't say where you are from.

in the uk it is illegal to ride anything on the pavement including a bicycle, however the police understand that it is wrong for children to ride on the road so it is overlooked until they are of a responsible age. in the uk that is 12

a battery powered bike is mechanically powered and would require licensing tax and an mot. again however its a toy and would be overlooked. this is different to a battery assisted bicycle where it is manually powered but assisted.

if you were in the uk it would be illegal to ride on the path and to ride on the road but it is standard presidure to ignore both

My question is; does a motorcycle with and electric ignition require a key to start?

2012 Yamaha Zuma not starting with the electric start?

My 2012 Yamaha Zuma 50 isn't starting with the electrical start it doesn't have a kickstart I live in Wisconsin and I'm a student and I haven't had it running since Thursday, February 29. I went to started yesterday on Monday and when I went to apply the front brake and press the electric start button the moped made a surging noise but didn't start I went to try and started again today and it's doing the same thing any ideas on how I can get this resolved? It's cold out here.

Answer
It appears to be the battery. The surging noise I would expect to be the solenoid. Just charge the battery or take it to a garage to be charged shouldn't cost much. This is why you always buy low displacement bikes with a kickstart. Hope this helped

How do you find what amp fuse to use for electric motor.?

best electric bike for 1000 image

idk.idkk

i had a 180 watt, 8 amp motor and it blew a 30 amp fuse. i ordered a 1000 watt (at 36v) (745 watt at 25v) motor. it's rated current is 34 amps. what rated amp fuse should i use?

o and it's for an electric bike motor. if anyone knows: could i use a resettable breaker? if so where could i get one that can run off 24 or 36 volts dc??

thanks.

Answer
Electric motors draw a large amount of current on startup and much smaller amounts after they come up to speed. What you need is called a "slow blow fuse". Such fuses can handle up to 10 times the current they are rated to handle for a short period of time, a few seconds or less. The actual fuse rating should be specified by the manufacturer of the motor. In the absence of such a recommendation, use a fuse rated the same or slightly higher than the continuous current rating.

A properly rated circuit breaker should work in place of a fuse.

Here's a 24V resettable circuit breaker rated for 40A. This one should be suitable, since it's intended purpose is to operate a motor and the added startup current would have already been considered in the design.

How do you put a chain driven motor on a bike with suspension?

Dug

I was thinking about putting a motor on an electric motocross bike so it goes faster, the only problem is is that the motorbike has suspension in the back and I was wondering if a chain driven motor can be mounted so when I hit a bump with the suspension the chain won't pop off or become stressed.

Answer
The sprocket needs to be roughly lined up with the center-line of the swing arm and not far from the pivot point. Just a random gas engine has nearly a zero percent chance of working since the output shaft is usually centered and too high on the engine. That, and you would have to find a clutch for it, make sure the sprockets line up perfectly, and fabricate a mounting system. You would also have to make a functional gas tank unless there was one mounted to the engine.

By the time you were done, you could have sold your old bike and bought a real dirt-bike. I see older used ones for sale in my local CL for $500-1000 all the time.
