Lights on a mini bike?

I have a mini bike no battery but i wanna put lights on it somehow its 6.5 tecumseh on it. Is it possible?

Answer
Forget it: Your mini bike has no way of powering lights--no battery and no charging circuit.

Mini-bike light question?

Ken

I bought my son a Baja Motorsports Doodlebug Mini-bike for Christmas. I would like to add a head/tail light combo for added vis/safety. The engine is a pull start Briggs/Stratton type, Is there a way to use the stator in conjunction with a small regulator to power a LED light kit? If I am overthinking it, can anyone recommend a rechargeable LED light kit strong enough to use as a headlight/taillight combo? I don't want to do massive mods to the bike, just provide some light.
I appreciate the answer about adding a starter, but I don't want to mod the bike that much. It is a pull start with no battery. I guess I need someone to recommend a good light kit.

Answer
Unfortunately no the engine would have to have been equipped with an electric start to have a lighting/charging coil, a different flywheel with another magnet and the lugs to bolt the coil to, which yours wont have, although there a few manufactures of the 6.5 Honda Clone engine with the electric start feature, run ya around $250 on Ebay, other than that it's time to hit Walmarts bicycle section and pick up the battery operated variety

How do i change my 47cc pocket bike into electric (keys) start and what do i buy?

Q. How do i change my 47cc pocket bike into electric start???

Answer
If it's not electric start now, it will probably be nearly as expensive to convert it to electric start as it would be to sell the bike and buy one with electric start. It's generally not at all easy to retrofit.

What is the best electric bicycle out there?

Tim

Looking for an electric bicycle for commuting...range isn't too crucial as long as it's greater than 10 miles. Affordability is important.

Answer
There are now many electric assist bicycles out there. Some come complete and some kits you adapt to your own bicycle. A great place to start might be here: http://www.electricbikesreviews.com/

There are two general types of electric assist bicycles. They are hub motors and friction motors. For either one the motor and batteries will add weight to the bicycle.

Features you will want to look for should include:

Light with a good power to weight ratio.
The added weight of the batteries should be well placed for the design of the bike and not simply put anywhere.
Ability to remove the battery for charging inside the home.

Regenerative braking captures inertial energy and tries to convert that back into electricity to charge the battery. Bicycles are much lighter than a car and so have less inertial energy to capture. Batteries can't accept a massive influx of energy at once. As a result batteries are not so good to capture inertial energy. The good news is that while this may not be an extremely useful feature it virtually comes free with an electric motor

A fairing of some sort will extend range probably more than regenerative braking. Because of its lower wind resistance an electric recumbant makes some sense: http://www.recumbents.com/wisil/e-bent/default.htm

does anybody have any experience with electric bikes?

Bruce (Bil

I' really interested in Schwins . . . . .

Answer
I have some experience with electric bikes. Here's what I know.

Any of the cheaper electrics, $500 or less, will not last a long time. If you take care of it, treat it nice, do EXACTLY what the instructions say regarding charging and riding, you'll probably get 2 years of regular use out of it. That's really not bad in my opinion for an inexpensive bike. It will probably save you that much in gas if you use it enough.

That being said, there are some more expensive electrics out there that are really good. The one I have experience with is the Giant Suede E. It's $1000, and will probably last years longer than those cheaper ones. You still have to take proper care of the battery, and try not to ride it through lakes, or into the ocean, but it's a quality bike, made to ride often and be durable.

Either way, you're getting something that will make it easier to bike, so you can get your workout, but not have to worry about getting home. If you use it for short trips around town it can save you tons in gas, not to mention the environment, and frankly, they're just fun to ride.

Can the pedaling energy charge the battery of an electric bike?

Drowzzy

Can the mechanical energy of pedaling be stored as electrical energy to be utilized later to run the bicycle automatically? I'm not talking about pure electric bikes that need regular charging, and not even about those that you pedal for a while as the bike stands still and then run it on electric power. I mean can you ride a bike and store the mechanical energy simultaneously? Will it be efficient? If so, then are such e-bikes available in the market, and what are they called so that I may Google for them?

Here's the scenario: I need a bicycle for regular commute, may be even for covering long distances. It's not feasible for a layman to pedal continuously for more than 5 to 10 miles. So I'm looking for a bike that you pedal for sometime, and when you're exhausted, you simply flick a button to make it run on electrical power which has been converted and stored from the mechanical energy of pedaling the bike; and then pedal again and auto-ride again and so forth. Will something like that be technically efficient, since you're moving the bike while pedaling as well as storing your spare energy?

Hope I haven't confused you. Thanks :)

Answer
Yes, it can!

Electric cycles are readily available. You normally charge them from a mains supply and then you can part-pedal / part-drive them on your commute. You can often adjust the amount of assistance to be supplied by the motor enabling you to go faster but less far or vice versa. If you want to pedal the bike and store 50% (say) of your energy for later you can do so but you will be doing double the work when pedalling, so your commute will be, so to say, twice as hard or half as fast and take twice as long. That doesn't seem to make much sense, especially since electric cycles are heavy and pedalling them (with no motor assistance) even without any of your energy going to storage, will be quite slow and tediously tough.

What an electric cycle does do is re-charge the batteries when you go downhill giving you back at least a good fraction of the energy expended in climbing up. But that produces a braking effect and the speed of descent is reduced. What inevitably goes lost is the energy taken by friction and wind resistance. Storing and using later is also subject to a degree of loss.

In short, if you don't want to use a commercial energy source to "fuel" your bicycle, get a conventional one - you'll do vastly better.

Can you run a CAR BATTERY on an ELECTRIC BIKE?

I'm Gumby

I have a AMPEDBIKE a Kit (it is a $400 hub motor placed on the rear wheel)
there is a small trailer hooked to my bike that holds my 3 small SLA batteries
12AH 12 volt
I was wondering what would happen if I replaced them all with a normal car battery
12 volts is 12 volts, is it not?
what am I missing here?

Answer
Check whether the 3 batteries are connected in series 12+12+12=36 volts or parallel (12 volts). I suspect that they are in series because that way the motor windings do not have to be as thick for the same power delivered, and it is cheaper to use higher voltage transistors in the controller than higher current types for the same performance. Also, the batteries need to be a deep cycle type (not automotive type) so they will have a reasonable life.

Answer
Maybe in Canada - going 18 to 22 mph is good speed - but you'll not be able to take it on the street - you'd have to ride on the sidewalks! If you want to go that slow - get an electric bike - they've got kits now - under 400.00? I don't know - its a personal choice.

If anyone knows anything about electric scooters can u HELP me?

JLLLLL

Hi, I'm from Canada, Alberta, Calgary and was wondering if there are any places that sell electric scooters near my area or ship to my area. What bikes are legal to ride on the sidewalks or streets of calgary? Is this a good model 600 Watt Comp Electric Scooter

Answer
You will find that in most places it is not legal to ride motorized vehicles on sidewalks. This would include an electric motorized vehicle.

The real question is weather it is enforced and how safe is it to do so? Is it being inconsiderate of pedestrians trying to use the sidewalk? Someday we may finally realize that there are lots of ways of traveling and not just walking or riding a car.

While there may not be so many places that you might get one from a shop nearby, you should easily be able to shop and get one on the web. This is a site below for an example.

Questions about electric bike?

JK

Hi, I just got this electric bike second hand on craigslist - and it's working fine, but I have a few questions about it.

1. Do you remove batteries when you have the bike on the public bike rack to prevent theft? Or do you think that the lock mechanism is good enough to deter the theft? Of course I put U-shape lock on the bike body itself, but I wasn't sure what to do with the battery. It's removable, so for today, (first time out), I removed the battery and brought it with me to the office.

2. how long does this battery last? The previous owner told me she used the bike for two years. How do you know the battery is no good any more? She used it to climb up a hill (gradual, a short steep part, but not so terrible) daily about 1.5 miles. When should I consider getting new battery pack (and how much does it cost?)

3. Is there way to adjust the positioning of the switch to turn the power on because it's in a little awkward place to reach as of right now. (I like to turn it on and off to save battery as I climb up the hill).

Thanks!
to the first responder: I live in upstate NY and the town is full of hills. I dare you to climb the two large hills I just went down and climbed this morning. I'm a middle aged woman with shaky knees and I'm not going to put up with your nonsense. Perhaps you should think about what you say before you post it - and save some embarrassment. You won't dare say that to me in person.

to the second person: I want to turn it on and off because, if you've ever rode bike on a long hill, the incline is not even. Some parts are almost level, and I don't need the assist, but some other parts are steep, then I need assist.
And please only answer if you actually know anything about electric bike.
Also, this is the bike I got: http://www.giant-bicycles.com/en-us/bikes/model/twist.express/7335/44074/ I forgot to add this link in the initial post.

Answer
I would remove the battery. The battery life is determined by the type and the number of recharge cycles. If you turn it off to climb hills why bother with an electric bike. There is a good chance that you already need a new battery. The cost will depend on the type, Google is your friend.

Edit:
You replied without giving any more information about the bike. Most have a Controller that determines how much energy you use.

1.) How long do they last before "burning out"
2.) How many miles can you typically travel on one without having to pedal?
3.) When going up a steep hill, is the bike powerful enough to move upward without having to pedal at all?

Answer
We will just use my Giant Lafree Lite as a sample"

1)How long do they last before "burning out"?
I am 230 lbs,and have ridden this bike 4K miles over 3 years and NO problems other than flat tires.

2.) How many miles can you typically travel on one without having to pedal? I have to pedal on this bike. I can go 30miles on this ebike designed in 2002 and costing $1300.

3.) When going up a steep hill, is the bike powerful enough to move upward without having to pedal at all?
Again, this ebike requires me to pedal, as you should on most ebikes. I have arthritis and asthma, but I can make it up a 7% hill at 7mph carrying 20lbs of groceries

ELECTRIC START VS. KICK START?

Sam K

I LOOKING TO BUY A USED CRF 150F WITH AN ELECTRIC START AND THEY ARE HARD TO FIND AND USUALLY MORE EXPENSIVE. I AM WONDERING WHICH STARTING METHOD IS MORE RELIABLE IN ANY SITUATION. CAN A ELECTRIC START FAIL WHEN WATER HITS IT? WILL BE DOING TRAIL RIDING AND A LITTLE TRACK.

Answer
The ideal thing, would be for the bike to have both electric start, and, a kick starter. So, if one or the other would fail, you could still fall back on the one that would still operate. By the way you will be using it, I am going to assume, that, it is a dirt bike, rather than a motorcycle. Generally, most trail bikes have both electric start, and a kick start. as a back up, in case of trouble. Although, some do only have just the electric start, or, some only have just the kick start. But, the ones I have seen, have both electric start, and, kick start. If the one that you are looking to buy doesn't have both the electric start, and, the kick start, I would leave it be, and, try to find one, with both electric start, and, kick start. I know, that they are made this way, and shouldn't be all too hard to find, either. The reason I say you should have both, is this... Say you are out on the trail... Miles from anyone, or anywhere... And, you get some water into your electric starter... Or, for that matter, the ignition system, itself... Once water splashes in there... You could be in trouble. The engine may quit, and, when you try to restart it, nothing happens... Cause the water has ruined the electric starter. Or, the entire ignition system, itself. It doesn't usually happen, but, it could, and, that would be just when it would happen, was when you were miles from no where. At least, having the kick start could save you the trip of having to walk a long distance. Generally, the bikes that are used for trail riding, and track use, usually are kick started, but your foot can get real tired... Having to push that lever, all day. And, there is always the chance, that the kick start lever could break, as well. Then, you would have to rely on the electric starter. So, what is a person to do ? Either way, you could get stranded. There are many things that can, and, do go wrong, at the least possible best time. If it were me buying the bike, I would try to find one with both electric start, and kick start. If that wasn't possible, then, I would opt for the kick start. There is less of a chance of water ruining vital electric parts. And, a kick start lever is going to be way less expensive to replace, than a electric starter. However, if you do get the electric starter, apply sicilone caulk to all areas where water and other stuff can get in. The clear colored sicilone cailk works best.

dirt bike hard to start?

i have an 08 yamaha ttr 125 dirt bike and the electric starter sucks so i normally kick it and it usually takes only about three kicks when not hot. but yesterday and today both when i tried starting it, it took about fourty kicks each time. any ideas of what could be causeing this? thanks

Answer
first i would just go through the bike and change the oil, air filter, spark plug.. and then try starting it.. if it still gives you trouble:
once you get it started turn the gas petcock off and let the bike run out of gas in the carb.. cuz there may be a little crap in there.. and if it still is giving you problems bring it to a yamaha dealer cuz they normally stand behind there bikes and will fix it for cheep.. it could be something like a broken needle valve in the carb which was like a $125 fix on most bikes

electric bike???

Q. does an electric bike or motor cycle (please tell me about both) require license to drive on the roads????

Answer
Electric assist only:

Since the passing of HR727, a federal law from 2003, most states have adopted the following:

If a bicycle of 2 or 3 wheels has a small electric helper motor of less than 750 watts ( 1 horsepower) , has working pedals and the motor cuts out at 20mph or less, then it is considered a bicycle, not a motor vehicle.

Most states (other than Hawaii, and New York) honor this, but check your state to be sure.

Some states are even more liberal and allow 1000 watts. Some states add a weight limitation of 100 pounds (Texas). some will add a minimum age, or mandatory helmets.

But the basics are in the first paragraph here and require no license.

Electric Bike?

Q. Hey I'm going to be moving a ways away from my kung fu school. So I will have to bike there but we are talking like 30 miles away at least. So my question is if anyone knows what that bike adapter kit is where it lets you switch between pedaling and driving?

Answer
there are allot of electric bikes and kits out there, but the problem is weight, performance, and distance per charge, remember, if you use those batteries for 10-20 Miles they are bone dry, and you have to pedal with an additional 80 pounds of weight, so you think, i ll add more batteries, but then you add more weight, then you need a bigger motor, so on and so forth, to have a more efficient setup you would need lighter batteries that last longer, lithium ion, or nickle metal hybrid, but they are very pricey, and you would need allot of them.

electric biking is not yet a transportation alternative, unless your going very short distance.

but if you wait, I'm currently working on a revolutionary concept for power assisted bicycles that will be available on the market for the summer of 2007 and will give you a 250 mile autonomy, and will only add 9.2lbs.

Any idea about R Martin Electric Bikes?

nitima_soo

I am planning to buy an electric vehicle; can you name any good suppliers in Austin, Texas area? I have heard much about R Martin Electric bikes, any idea how is it?
www.rmartinbikes.com

Answer
I'll look at the website. I've never heard of them. I have a Giant Lite electric bike that I like but like so many electric bikes, I think they stopped marketing them in the US. They are the most popular bike in Japan. Very dependable.

(Later) OK, I see that R Martin is the distributor, not the manufacturer. The bikes they have seem to be OK because their drive systems are connected through the bike's crankshaft rather than attached through a separate chain drive to the rear wheel. You need to decide if you want pedal assist which does not have a throttle and does not go unless you pedal, or whether you want one with a throttle, which you don't necessarily have to pedal.

Market size and growth scooters, electric scooters and E-bikes?

Paul L

Hi, I am desperate for help on this, I have spent many, many hours I cannot spare and am all searched out, I am desperate to find market details for unit sales (totals and growth rates) for Europe, China and Taiwan for gas powered scooters, electric scooters and e-bikes, also need USA figures for dirt bikes, I am trying to plug these figures into a very small part of my thesis and it sure seems no one will give this basic information unless I pay 3 grand or so to a market research company, it cannot be as hard as I am finding surely. I also need the details for reference on where the numbers came from.

Any help will be very much appreciated.

Best regards

Answer
you have two sources:
1- in the USA, check out the dirt bike magazines, they usually have the kind of info you are looking for
2- Out of the US, you have to call the marketing and sales departments for each manufacturer and ask your questions. Some of them post their numbers of their web sites
good luck

could there be a pedal charge electric Mountain bike Front wheel motor Back wheel generator Seat back Battery?

justbill

maybe your range would be what you want always so long as your not tired or is the pedaling going to be a lot of work You could have bike gears and shift down but that would cut power huh? have they ever tried to make one of these in scooter or mountain bike

Answer
Yes
http://www.greenspeed.us/bionx_motor_bike_kit.htm

Some motors can be used as a generator, and in such a case gererator mode will increase the effort required to pedal the bike. You can also use this added resistance as a mean of braking, this is called regenerative braking where energy used to slow the bike is converted to electricity to recharge the battery. Problem is that these braking periods are a small fraction of the way a bike is driven there would not be much recharging happening. Because of this it would most likely not be worth the expense to have regenerative braking on a bicycle. You would do much better to just recharge the batteries in a more traditional fashion from a power source. If you wanted to be green about it then use a solar panel to recharge an alternate set of batteries and swap battery packs.

Edit:

BTW in the above link you can mount that wheel motor on either the front or rear wheel Rear wheel mounting requires adding afree wheell gear pack. Most installations I have seen add a rear wheel mount motor. I once saw a chain saw engine retro'ed onto a bikes rear wheel via a secondary chain and sprocket.

electric bikes?

free_mark5

Anyone have a electric bike, i want one that looks like a mt. bike, and can also be used without the power on.

Answer
you have several options.

Giant will be coming out with a new model this spring, check out your Giant Ebike Dealer, or
Bird Ebike in Colorado if you don't have one.

Next is the Bionx ebike add on kit, can be added to most bikes.

Also Crystalyte hub motors can be added to most Mountain bikes.

Buy from a good dealer, locally if you can.

we have several ebikes including Giant bionx, Crystalyte and others.

Your best choice will depend on quite a few factors. but first make sure where they are legal in your locality. State of NY doesn't like them.

Legal electric assist Ebikes are generally considered bicycles if they comply with the federal law HR727- Max 750watts, pedals that work, maximum 3 wheels, maximum 20mph under power. but there are exceptions so check locally.

Where can I get a motor trike (3 wheel) in the Dallas / Ft. Worth area that I can make payments on?

The Pep Boys auto parts stores, as well as AutoZone and others, sell very cheap Chinese ATV's and small electric and gas bikes. They are priced under $1000 in most cases, and some are even under $500 so making payments wouldn't be needed unless you're really broke.

dirt bike for a 13 year old girl?

Q. i only know a little about them and i really want to ride them. my parents had them when they where younger and at my dads cousins house they have a track because he races. i don't want something slow and i don't want anything super fast just something in the middle. im about 5`2 if that helps at all. could you tell me the basics of riding and what do you think would fit me best by the way it would probably be used from craigslist and under 1000 i was looking at like something from 1997 or up but i wouldn't really trust one that old. also what gear would i need.

Answer
Since you have never had a dirtbike, I HIGHLY recommend you stay away from 2-strokes...they are cheaper in price...but they are harder to learn on and more difficult to get the hang of. You are one inch shorter than me...I am 5'3 and I ride a crf150rb. There are two types of 150's...the race and the trail. I'm not sure which kind of bike you are looking for to start on, or if you are even wanting to race. This bike is not cheap...but you can find them used and they are amazing to start on. The crf150f is the trail version, it will have an electric start and not be as fast as the race bike. It will also have a smaller price tag. The crf150r or rb ( note that they are the same bike...the rb is just a little taller...) is a race bike. It is a pretty fast bike, but since it is a 4-stroke it does not demand being on the powerband 24/7 making it also a pretty good bike to learn on. These bikes are also excellent for your size. The bike first came out in 06 for the race version, and I'm not sure about how far back the trail version of the bikes goes.
Besides the bike, you will need some riding boots. Try some Thor Women's or Fox Comp 5 boots.
You will need a helmet. Any major mx manufactuer makes a wide variety of helmets.
You will need mx gear ( pants and jersey, gloves, googles.) You can pick whatever brand you like best for these items. There is Fox, Thor, One Industries, Answer, O'Neal, MSR, etc.
Have fun girl! Welcome to the dirtbike world! Hope you enjoy whatever you decide to get!

Bike to work?

biker2b

I would like to start riding my bike to work, but the roads are less than prime condition. I mean, no shoulders or bike lanes and crazy drivers. Would this still be feasible? It's only about 5 miles one way, but what sort of precautions should I take? I was also considering getting an electric bike because parts of the route are hilly, do these makes hills easier?

Answer
My boyfriend wants to do the same thing....you're not him are you? Hmmm....

Anyway, its a good idea to wear a helmet and bright, reflective clothing.

The electric bike would make the hills much easier. I don't know from experience, but apparently you just pedal normally to charge it and you don't put forth any extra effort when going up hills. Just keep pedaling.

Also consider the weather. If it's not too hot where you are 5 miles would be ok...if you are in shape. You should do a practice ride when you don't need to go into work to see if you could make it. Also, will you have a backup plan if it's raining when it's time to go home? I would wear clothing specifically for the ride and have water and a backpack with clothes to change into once I got to work and a rain pancho just in case ...as well as some deodorant!

You could also ride your bike to a VIA bus stop and load up your bike.

Best electric bike for under $900?

Jon

I'm a senior and I'm about to go to college. I'm looking at getting an electric bike, because my college of choice discourages cars but has a large, hilly campus. I think that I've got a pretty good shot at getting my parents to buy me a bike, but I have to keep it under $900 (I may be able to push them up to around $1100, but that would be a tough sell).

I'd like it to look somewhat low-key, not unlike a typical street/mountain bike. It doesn't have to be crazy powerful, but it does need to be strong enough to tackle hills on a regular basis, and it needs batteries to match that usage pattern. I prefer the flexibility of a mid-drive mounted motor, since that would let the motor take advantage of the gears, and it would let me easily switch between power-assisted and all-electric pedaling, but I wouldn't mind a different setup. Finally, the university has a lot of fog and rain, so weather-resistance is probably important.

I already own a street-bike with 26" wheels and a diamond-frame body, so if a conversion kit would be a strong option, I'm also open to modifying my current bike.

Finally, if the bike most suitable for my needs falls outside of my price range, what would the price-range for that bike be, and what alternatives could I pursue? (I don't want a motorbike or a scooter/moped)

Thanks for reading this and considering my question. Let me know if I should include any additional information.

Answer
Hi John,

Instead of just broadly answering your question with an obvious sales related link, I would like to take the time to Recommend the Crystalyte line of electric bicycle conversion kits.

Since you already mentioned that you have a bicycle that you like, you can buy and apply this kit to your already purchased bicycle. 16", 20", 24", 26", and 700c sized wheels can all be built when you order the kit.

Some of the electric bikes look like motorcycles and attract a lot of attention (perceived as a motorcycle, not a bicycle). The Crystalyte motors are built into the rear hub of your bicycle wheel, so you will be seen as a regular pedaling cyclist.

There are different ranges and torque capabilities, and if you are going to be tackling hills on the regular, you will want to look into the Crystalyte Phoenix Brute electric bicycle conversion kit. The Phoenix Brute is the most powerful motor that Crystalyte makes and the torque is all in the bottom end of the power-band, so you will handle the hills with this selection.

If you would like to read about the different Crystalyte Electric Bike Conversion Kits, you can go here and read all the specifications, requirements, and installation instructions. I think that this motor is the best for your needs. Pedaling is not something that you "switch" between with the Crystalyte Motors too, because the bike drive and electric drive are separate. You can use just the pedals, pedals and motor, or just the motor at any time in your ride. :)

Answer
Legal Low Powered Electric Assist bikes are now becoming a great alternative for tens of thousands of commuters in the US. Use an ebike for commuting and save the price of the ebike in insurance savings and service costs, And still get a workout- no more time on that dreaded treadmill at the spa.

Some young fit folks may never need one, but, if you are one of the folks that really does not want to take their car EVERYWHERE, especially to just get a loaf of bread, Ebikes may be the thing for you.

They all have on/off switches and a way to control the level of assist. People might use maximum assist going to work, but minimum assist going home for a workout. If you have asthma or arthritis, an ebike makes the bicycling world yours again- on good days- minimum assist, on bad days - you still don't have to get in the car- just use more assist.

Fifty percent of households own bicyles but less than 5% of them use them regularly. Over 50% of households with ebikes use them on a regular basis.

Some people use their $2,000 racing bike as a roof ornament and a badge of being a yuppie. Other people take ebikes every where, saving lots of money, helping the environment, and stayiing quite fit. YOU DO HAVE TO PEDAL, other wise your range is really shortened.

Right now you can get an ebike that will go 30 miles, (with your pedal assist) make it up most any hill in most cities, feels like a normal bike, can bring home 40 lbs of groceries and has no more service issues than a normal bicycle -for about $1500. And have local service in MANY US cities.

There are today some really great ebikes, much better than 3 years ago. The Bionx, www.bionx.ca , has the most bicycle like feel, and great range. Cyclone, www.cyclone-usa.com , has the most power.
Crystalyte system kits have pretty good value
http://www.poweridestore.com .

In most US states, Ebikes are legally limited to 20mph under electric power, must have pedals that work, less than 750 watts of power, and 2 or 3 wheels (not 4), and are legal where other bikes are legal. Check your state though.

For reasons of test riding and long term support, it is highly suggested that you buy your first one from a local dealer, unless you like to work on such things your self.

The average ebike rider puts on more miles than the average regular bike rider. Why? Ebikes are more fun, less hassle, and there are just less excuses to take the car.

Many ebikes are also light enough to be put on many city busses and trains- helping with "multi-mode" commuting.

(But be careful, there is some junk out there)

What is the best kind of bicycle? The one you will ride.

Try the following yahoo discussion group for indepth information on specific ebikes:

http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/power-assist/

There are great ebike dealers in Texas, Colorado, Seattle, Georgia, New York, California, Kansas, Illinois, Utah, Nevada; the list goes on and on.

Electric moped/bike/scooter?

ls96

Is there any electric moped/bike/scooter that meets the specifications?

Seats: 2 people
Max Load: 250-300lbs
Speed: Less than or equal to 35mph. (don't want to go that fast, but enough so that 2 people won't make it go that slow)
Range: 30-40 miles
Charge time: Less than 10 hours.
-Price: Less than $2500.

Btw, I have done alot of research etc so I'm not just being lazy. I just can't find the right one :(

Thank you :D
Also, I've heard that X-Treme wasn't that great, so if I can I'd like to stay away from that company.

Thanks again.
BladeGirl:

The Commander SHO sounds good, but how much is it? I couldn't seem to find the price anywhere. I went to the my local dealer in Florida but they do not have the Commander SHO listed as a product. And how would 250lbs affect the range and mph?

Thanks.

Answer
Veloteq makes one that meets all of your requirements:

http://veloteq.com/

http://veloteq.com/veloteqgallery.com/news.htm
http://veloteq.com/veloteqgallery.com/commuter.htm
http://veloteq.com/veloteqgallery.com/challenger.htm

the Commander SHO has seating large enough
to comfortably carry two people. The Commuter and Challenger could, if the passenger is small and lighter in weight.

They have a top speed of about 27 mph.

I do NOT work for them or a distributor, but I too did a lot of research looking for an electric scooter that could carry two people for under $2000. These all fit the bill, but I wanted one with a top speed of 40 mph. I did get to see them in person and they were pretty neat. If you live in the Boston area, a local dealer where you can go see them is

Let me help you bring your carbon footprint down to absaolute zero...

Let me help you lower your carbon footprint down to absolute zero...

First, cut off your electrical breaker box. With you not using any electricity, this will bring your carbon footprint down dramatically.

Second, if you are using home heating oil or natural gas, turn the valve to off. Another great way to lower your carbon footprint.

Third, park your vehicles and use your bicycle to get to work and to wherever you need to go. Now you are really bringing your carbon footprint down.

Forth, do not mow or weed-eat your lawn. Since you have cut out your biggest carbon producers, this is the next in line.

Fifth, Stop using city supplied water. That takes electric pumps so if you can cut out your share, that will lower your carbon footprint even lower. Ride your bicycle down to the creek and get your daily water needs.

You are now on a roll. Don't stop now, we'll get your carbon footprint to ZERO yet.

Sixth, do not eat any animal products (meat). These animals not only produce CO2 but also methane.

Seventh, eat only home grown food since it takes trucks and warehouses to bring you food to market, by you only eating from your own backyard, you will not cause anybody else to produce greenhouse gasses to bring your food to market.

Now your carbon footprint is almost zero. There is one more way to cut your carbon footprint to absolute zero...

Place a plastic bag over your head and tie it tight to stop the exhaling of CO2 by your lungs.

YOU HAVE NOW DONE IT!!! Your carbon footprint is now at absolute zero and you have saved the world! Now, if we can just get all the other environmentalists to do the same we will save the world!

Is there a way electric magnets can be used to make hovering automobiles?

Little Mon

Maybe we could use powerful electric magnets like they use in junk yards to propel them and maybe we could use high speed fans or magnets to move them.

I was thinking of magnets in the roads maybe? Or better yet there may be a way we could use the earths natural magnetisation.

These things should exist. This is 2012 and I'm sick of people dreaming about the future. It's time we get off of our аsses and made hovering cars, printers that print objects rather than sheets of paper, robots that cook for us and answer questions faster than google can.

Anyway, do you think theres a way we can use magnetisation to propel human carriers?

I personally think we should ditch automobiles and use subways, buses (hovering buses), bicycles, and cabs for emergencies.

Answer
The future is here already...we already have maglev trains that operate in some countries on the principle of magnetic levitation. The problem with doing so with cars/trucks/buses is the cost of installing such systems on freeways/roads and equipping vehicles with the system...too expensive but some cities have proposed plans for such systems. But for now, mass transit Maglev trains will do and are much more efficient at transporting people/cargo than cars/trucks/buses. Even conventional trains are more efficient...a train can carry 1 ton of product or people some 436 miles on 1 gallon of fuel. Barges and ships are even better.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maglev_(transport)
http://old.post-gazette.com/maglev/maglev01.asp

We also have 3D printers that print entire objects as you say and Japan is a world leader in robotics due to their rapidly aging population...fewer young people to take care of the elderly so their plan is to create robotic assistants for the elderly....cooking, serving, vacuuming, shopping, etc..Look up ASIMO for one. Israel as well is developing robotics for military purposes since they have a small population compared to their enemy neighbors.

Is a 2005-2006 kawasaki klx 125 a good dirt bike?

Tim

Im getting a klx 125 soon. Its either 05 or 06. I just didnt know if it was a good, fast dirt bike.

Answer
Hello,
I cannot answer about the performance of how fast or weight and handling.I can answer about the engine and mechanics of the bike.As you know it is Japanese made with pride and quality as good as any other Japanese bike like Honda Etc in my opinion because I am a certified mechanic and work mainly on all Japanese bikes. The 2006 model has only the kick start and some of these came only set up for dirt or meaning off road, make sure when you purchase you ask about the title in case it is or has been set up for the on road use.It has the mikuni carburetor with drum brakes front and back with cdi electronic ignition. The 2012 Klx 125 Kawasaki is a endure and off road bike meaning you can title the bike and drive it on the road legally or just use it off road your choice but it does come with all the federal regulated electronics like horn lights blinkers headlight and so on.It is a dual overhead cam putting out around 10.9 horsepower with fuel injection digital dc-cdi ignition meaning no carburetor or points to deal with and a 5 speed manual transmission electric start and kick start, twin caliper front brake system for exceptional braking a 1.85 gallon of fuel that will probably take you near 150 miles or more depending on how you drive it.The older model 2003 has all the same except it has a mikuni carburetor. The engines are your basic 4 stroke oil forced lubrication with a sinle piston and dual valves. These engines are bullet proof,I have worked on a few only to tune them up and install new rings and valve job.The top end is the only thing that really wears on the bike like all good Japanese bikes meaning after many miles of riding sometimes you have to install new rings and grind the valves to keep the horsepower up to where ir should be and a valve job with some new gaskets and your ready to put another several thousand miles on the bike. The parts are relatively inexpensive as well and very economical to maintain as a whole bike.It is a very nice bike to use on road and off.If you are a beginner rider then this bike would be for you because it is very easy to learn on easy to ride light in weight corners the road easily with excellent handling and braking power. You will not be disappointed if you purchase a Kawasaki klx 125,just remember to keep the oil changed at regular intervals along with the air cleaner filter fuel filter and you will have years of use with several thousand enjoyable inexpensive miles of riding.Good luck with your purchase and if you have anymore questions please ask and I'll answer them as I can. Please let us know your decision as I would like to know if you like the bike after your purchase.Take care ride safe and always wear a helmet.

kx250f or 2012 sxf250? opinions please?

I'm 19, 5'5 , 140lbs and im looking for a next dirtbike for trail riding but have troubles if i dump the bike getting on and starting it because of seat hight. its very fustrating. The bikes i have ridden are 1st-1982 mx175, 2nd- 2002 yz125, 3rd-2008 crf150rb, 4th- 2007 kx100. experienced seat hight trouble with yz 125 (seat hight-39in)
kx250f seat hight 37in and have considered shaving seat and lowering by forks but the new 2012 ktm sxf250 has electric start which would make things much easyer but seat hight is 39in as well. Not sure what too do or what would be the reasonable choice.

Answer
If your wanting to save some money and your stuck between the 2 id say the kawi. ktm's are the most spendy for sure (KTM = Kost Too Much.) Although I love mine but i ride woods and nothing else really. They do make a great bike but you'll be spending more... I'd also look into the CRF's if I were you. I had a CRF250f and LOVED it. As for the height problem.... You'll get more comfortable the more you ride and theres ways of lowering your rear shock and front forks but its kinda spendy. You could also cut some seat foam but i personally prefer a nice seat and not hard plastic.

what is a good electric assist bicycle?

Rambo

Im kinda plump and find it hard to ride a reg bike, makes my legs/back hurt...anysuggestions?

Answer
There are no "good" electric assist bicycles. Th cost is astronomical, the price of battery replacement is also sky high & the charge in the battery may run low or OUT at the wrong time at the wrong place. Then you are stuck pedaling a VERY heavy bicycle home under your own power.

Please don't give me that "I'm kinda plump" routine either. I started out several years ago at 315 lbs. I also have degenerative disc disease in the lower back and arthritic knees. By using the proper cycling posture & "spinning" the pedals at a "cadence" of around 70-90 rpm (if not more) at all times, you can do it too. If I can - anybody can.

Trek Electric Assist Bicycles - lowest priced one - $2,299.99 - http://www.trekbikes.com/us/en/collections/electric_assist/models/

My 2011 Raleigh Touring Road Bike - cost - $1,200 - http://www.raleighusa.com/archive/2011-steel-road/sojourn-11/

Started off on a straight hybrid with the upright sitting/riding position. Switched to road bikes about a year ago. Love 'em!!! Today I rode 26 miles! Again...don't give me that "I'm kinda plump" routine. If I can get fit & shed pounds - anyone can. Links below from the late Sheldon Brown. Please read.

Answer
most pit bikes have 4 gears....

some of the descriptions on the power, exhaust, suspension, wheels are a bit weird.

like no manufacture would say the power is "Wheelies in 2nd and 3rd gear!!" unless there a joke.

but this does sound kinda legit but it does depend on the price$.

if it is under $1000 i would say that is okay. if its over that dont bother, go on ebay.

by the way pit bikes can get a bit boaring after a while. i suggest get a motocross bike.

Electric bike battery life?

vasu

For how many days electric bike batteries can work normally. What are the maintenance costs for that. In India is it registration for that.

Answer
It's not clear what you mean. There are 2 things:
1. How long the battery will run before recharging depends on its size, age & condition and how it is driven - the maker usually gives a figure for the bike's range (distance per charge), but this is an average based on a factory test. If the weather is very cold, if you drive faster or uphill, or with a heavy load, the distance will be shorter. If you drive more slowly, on level roads or downhill and are a small, light person the range will be more.
2. The lifetime of a battery depends on its type (lead-acid, lithium etc.) and how often it is charged/discharged. If a battery is stored in very hot conditions it will not last as long. Again the maker will advise the average lifetime.

Maintenance cost depends on a number of things:
1. If you charge the battery from mains electricity, the cost of charging. the easiest way to find this is to charge the battery ovenight and check your electricity meter, then you can calculate the cost.
If you have a solar panel or wind generator, the charging can be free but these chargers will cost you a lot of money to buy.
2. There will be other maintenance costs like servicing, new tyres and spare parts when the new ones wear out, you will only know these costs when you have used the bike for a long time, perhaps years.

I need an electric bike for parking issues(tickets)..I am able to spend up to 400 but i also want a good looking bike hahaha..anyone know of a place in or close to the philadelphia area?

Good electric bikes start at around $1500 and go up from there. Even decent conversion kits are about $1000. Anything lower than that price point will be a slow, disappointing, heavy pile of junk.

Solar Panel wattage for my Electric Bike?
I am looking to purchase an Electric Bike for transport to work. I work on an Organic farm and need to save some energy up those hills.

I need help figuring out what size solar panels would be needed to charge the battery, and whether its plausible.

I'm looking at Ebay in Australia as I am immigrating down there. I prefer to afford the foldable/portable solar panel system: 80 watt, 120 watt, 160 watt, but IF necessary a bit more.

300w 3 PHASE 36v ELECTRIC REAR WHEEL
THREE 12v 17ah SLA BATTERIES (Total 36v)

or

Motor: 250 Watt brush-less DC hub
Batteries: 24V/10Ah pack, valve regulated

can anyone out there help explain to me how to figure this out?

thanks :)

Answer
wow
i;d just say abandon all hope
get a regular bike and learn to ride it
get enough of your own juice to ride 'up hills'

you work in an organic farm and you want to get one of these silly heavy slow environment destroying resource wasting electric bikes?
dude

organic farm ===> real bike
seriously

otherwise you are in for some serious electrical engineering or spending about 3 times what a good, regular bike would cost

electric bike kit measurements?

My 3 girls

I bought an electric bike kit. Not the bike, yet. The motor is fitted on the front wheel. I need to have the hub fit the fork right. What do I measure on my new bike and how do I measure the hub on the the electric wheel. Or am I wrong and need to measure something else?
Thanks

Answer
You'll need to measure the 'over locknut' width of the hub. Could be either 130 or 135 mm. Make sure the bike you buy has the correct rear fork drop out width.

Would an electric moped scooter make it 75 miles without dying?

[Oris] [

I work at the United States Post Office and deliver mail to about 50 mailboxes a day on average. The mail route is about 72 miles a day total. Since I am only a part-time employee at the post office, they don't pay for my gas, thus, I end up spending about $200-$270 a month on it. I was seriously considering buying an electric moped scooter or something of the sort. However, how long can they go for before they need to be charged up again? Would the moped handle going about 72 miles Tuesday - Friday? Also, I deliver in a place with winding roads and two very steep hills, would it be able to go up them?

72 miles is beyond the range of the electric bikes currently available.

Can anyone recommend an electric mini-bike?

DarkSerge5

I am newly interested in small recreational motor vehicles and am interested in purchasing a beginning minibike. I was looking at the Serengeti Badger 450, and wanted to try and find other bikes like it. Problem is, that seems to be the only electric one I came across with that look. Can anyone recommend to me any electric minibikes similar to the Badger and within the same price range?

Answer
Yamaha do an effective ( it works) electric bicycle, but it is pricy, however, it works and here in the UK it is being purchased.
Everything depends on the battery technology, which has a way to go yet.

I would wait about 5 years myself, then they could get good. Meantime, look at the Dutch diesel bikes this may be a better way to go

canada-china?

Q. what are some products that we could trade with china

Answer
I Like "Cokewww's" Answer, and I love my country of Canada. GO CANADA !!

Anyways, I've been living in China for a bit now, and they sure have alot of electirc bicycles and scooters here. If you convert the cost of one of these in to Canadain funds, its really cheap too. I could buy one for about 300 CAN$, the problem is the shipping. It could be expensive and difficult to arrange. Anyways, I would love to take one of these electric scooters home to Canada. Although, I'm not sure if they are as practical for Canada as they are for China, since our cities are constructed around the use of vehicles. You couldn't take the electric scooter on the freeway, and it will be basically useless in the country.

As for trade, I'm not sure what else we could send to China that we already do. Cokewww has that covered. I would just like to see more electric bikes/scooters used in the big cities of Canada. Gas prices are too high.

Which countries now have full-electric car technology besides China and Japan?

Q. BYD e6 electric full-size SUV: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BYD_e6

Nissan LEAF compact electric car: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nissan_Leaf

* Chevrolet Volt is not full-electric besides it needs gasoline as fuel.

Answer
It depends upon what you mean by "full-electric car technology" and by asking "which countries"...

Electric cars are not a national phenomena. They are things. National policies can promote electric cars but to my knowledge no country has nationalized an electric car building company and is producing electric cars on their own. Corporations may give some a feeling of national pride or identity but many corporations are multi national and may hold allegiance to no country.

Countries and areas that promote electric cars with incentives are more likely to attract corporations that are making electric cars. Such companies are in some ways not very different than other corporations. If an area will provide certain grants, property, utilities, or tax incentives then companies are more likely to build a plant in that location. Having cheap labor and reasonable lines of supply are also a plus. Selling their products may require a different set of incentives to attract buyers.

A case in point may be "Better Place." http://www.betterplace.com/ This company does not make cars. They sell a battery swapping service. They have several international initial target locations including: Israel, Denmark, Australia and Hawaii, San Francisco and Canada. The nissan leaf was to be a part of their system and may be in the future. For now they are swapping batteries on the Renault Fluence ZE. http://www.betterplace.com/ By some measure this might be considered a "full-electric car technology," but to what country are you going to attribute this technology? Shai Agassi, the companies founder and CEO has lived in California and Israel.

The Tesla Roadster is an American company and a media success. It is now selling their cars internationally, but the actual number of vehicles sold is presently just over 1000.1 Their are many lessor known electric vehicle companies that may happily sell you a vehicle that is hardly a production run. For a full production run of a full electric vehicle (BEV: battery electric vehicle) that is fully highway capable in the US we are looking to the Nissan Leaf as a first. Zap vehicles have been built in China for years and sold by an American Company internationally as motorcycles but we might not necessarily put these in the same class as the Nissan Leaf. The same may be true of other of the ess expensive Chinese cars.

I would agree that the Volt is not a "full electric" vehicle, but it is more electric than the more parallel hybrid prius. From a purist point of view perhaps even a BEV is not a pure electric vehicle as it uses chemistry in the batteries. A pure electric might use ultracapacitors for storage or something like this: http://electric-vehicles-cars-bikes.blogspot.com/2009/08/korean-researchers-develop-electric.html

I am looking for an electric bike for exercise for under $500. I want electric because my area is very hilly and I want to get exercise but I'm just not in shape enough to make it up the hills without some help. Ideas for the best in my price range?

Answer
Forget the electric bike they are hard to pedal and using the motor wont give you any exercise. If you want exercise get a used stationary bike off of Craig's list or better yet go to the local bike shop and get a good hybrid bike. It will take time to be able to climb hills, if you have to get off and walk.

Electric Bikes: Car replacements? Yes/No?

northernwi

The higher end electric bikes get like 40 (perhaps more) miles with assistance. I figure, if you carry two of those (maybe one in the backpack), theres really nowhere the *average* person goes on a regular basis that wouldnt fall within an 80 mile round trip. Hills are way easier, and you wont get sweaty (if you get sweaty on a normal bike commute, that is)

There are things cars are very good at, transporting big items or multiple people, but for every day - mundane situations, do you think electric bikes could be a good alternative for most people who arent morbidly obese?

I personally think so! Its also a very green way to go about things.

Answer
Absolutely! Electric bikes are a great alternative to cars for people who wouldn't ordinarily ride a bicycle. They could replace a great deal of car traffic. A bike trailer or cargo bike/trike configuration helps address cargo needs.

This is a dealer of electric bikes and vehicles near me...have a look to see what types of products are currently available and how they could be improved:

vinny

Answer
Electric bikes usually have a limited range power limits and/or limited speed. Most cyclist find that they are not a great deal of help and after a relatively short distance they will actually slow them down.

There are many different versions of electric bike.most fall into these categories.

Friction drive.. They have a roller of some type that runs onto the tyre.

Hub motors electric motor built into either the front or rear wheel.

Chain or belt drives. Either feed into the crank system or drive one of the wheels separately.

To find a kit do a general search on electric bike kits.

Here is a few that I know of. (I'm biased toward the last group there are a bit more efficient)

Answer

should i buy an xb-500 electric bike to got to work?

Evan R

Answer
Absolutely, (as long as you're within 15 miles from your work) - any time we can find something that will save the environment - I say, go for it! Plus they're pretty nice looking.
But I would first check your state motor vehicle laws before buying it just to be sure that you can drive it on the roads. Some states are funny about electric mopeds and scooters.
If you're in Canada (at least in Ontario) some electric bikes/scooters that have operating pedals don't even have to be registered.
Also, don't pay much over $650 (with shipping). This site has the best deals and shipping is low,

Good luck to you!

What are some effective but easy ways people can save energy?

ksenia

Answer
Monitor your electricity use by buying a Kill-A-Watt or other such monitor.

http://the-gadgeteer.com/review/kill_a_watt_electric_usage_monitor_review

'An average household uses about 4300kWh of electricity each year. This results in emissions of over 2 tonnes of CO2 per household, or ¾ tonne per person - just for domestic electricity supply. In comparison, total CO2 emissions per person in the UK are around 10 tonnes, and emissions per person in India are about 1 tonne. Luckily, it is possible to cut domestic electricity use in half with simple energy efficiency measures.
'This table shows how electricity use is divided up in an average house (excluding electric heating):

Lighting 19%
Cold Appliances 18%
Wet Appliancs 15%
Cooking 15%
Consumer Electronics 19%
ICT (computers, etc) 9%
Other 5%'

kx250f or 2012 sxf250? opinions please?

Which yamaha dual sport bike is better?

Vertigo

I was looking the 2011 WR250X, the 2011 WR250R and the 2012 TW200. I prefer the TW2000 cause is cheaper and dont know it looks nice. But i will like to know the pros and cons of each one, nore concentrated in the TW200. Thanks

Answer
Rule out the wr250x as its street tires will not be good off road.

The wr250r is a dual sport, powerful for a 250 and tall, so you will want to sit on one and see if it fits. While it won't be too comfortable on a highway it is fast enough for one. It would be a good off road bike based on the power and tires.

The TW200 has been sold for years so its easy to find one used, though I think very early models had kick starting only, so check the one you are looking at has electric start. It will be about half the price of the 250, less if you are buying used. Its 200cc engine is not very powerful, so it will not be fast enough for highway driving (top speed is around 60mph). It will be ok on easy trails, but a bit underpowered on anything with steep hills. If it doesn't matter to you about the higher speed and power of the 250, or the 250 is too tall, then I think the TW200 would be a good in town and trail bike, and fine for country riding, and will get really good gas mileage.
