Dirt bike question?!?

best electric bikes of 2013 on Five infant car seats that balance price and performance
best electric bikes of 2013 image

Amanda

I was wondering if anyone experienced in dirt bikes could help me out.

I am looking to buy a dirt bike but im not sure what one I should get.
I mostly want the back for track riding and not for trail riding. I am a female 5'1 and 100 pounds. I do not want to get a beginners bike but would rather have one I can keep for years to come. I do have a small amount of experience in riding. I was looking more towards a Yamaha but any brand could work.
I want a fast back with a good amount of power. Any help would be much appreciated.
Oh and im 19 almost 20 if that makes any difference.
What about something like a YZ 250F or YZ 250?? Not sure whats better though 2-stroke or 4.

Answer
The seat height on the YZ 125s and 250s will be too much for you. They are almost 40 inches. You will never be able to touch the ground. The ideal situation is sit on the seat and at least be able to touch your toes to the ground on both sides.

Check out the 2013 TTR125 LE 34" seat height, front disc brake, 4 stroke and electric start. Probably would work good for you.

Who will make plans now to purchase an extended range vehicle, electric, or hydrogen car by 2013 (5 years)?

Chi Guy

To greatly reduce US dependency on oil?

At this time the $30,000 extended range vehicle (300 Mpg), Aptera (ready in 2010) is on my list. By then their may be more options available.

Also, FORD has accepted my concept for another type of extended range vehicle. After all of the paper work and waivers I signed, I hope that it comes into fruition within the next five years.

Will you make plans (plan your budget) to purchase a high miledge (80 Mpg or more) OR alt fuel vehicle within the next five years?

Can I use motorcycle batteries with electric bicycle?

Valerka

Just want to save money on gas by going to work and back home (almost 40 miles per day) I don't mind putting a few batteries onto the electric bike (to meet the voltage). Do you think that is possible?

Answer
You will have to do a little research yourself, but a quick look it seems that a electric hub on a regular bicycle, capable of 15-20 mph, capable of 10 miles, would take a pair of 10AH 12V SLA batteries. For your capacity you will be looking at a pair of automobile batteries.

I cannot decide if I want to wait one more year and get a car, or convert another car to electric like I had planned to do. I am afraid that if my dad and I buy the car for conversion, he will not be as willing to put in as much money for my first real car (we have already decided that he will help pay). Which way should I go?

Answer
What do you want to achieve? How much budget do you have? What sort of driving do you do?

If most of your journeys are long distance, or high speed, then forget electric cars right now: they're not the right power source for the job. If most of your journeys are short and on slower roads, then an electric car is in its ideal environment.

If you are converting a car, you'll probably end up with a car with a range of 40-60 miles and a top speed of 55-60mph (depending, of course, on what budget you have). You will end up with something that is unique, but it will probably be fairly slow.

If most of your driving is in a built up area, then that probably isn't an issue for you. In which case, you can go the self-build route if you want an electric car. If you are using new components, then budget $3-4000 for the conversion, on top of the price of the car: more if you want the latest lithium batteries (between you and me, don't go there: they're troublesome. Stick with lead acid batteries which are a lot easier to implement for a home conversion).

If you want a more practical car, that will have great performance and a decent range, you'll have to go the purchase route. Mitsubishi will have their 'i' electric car out in the US very shortly. I've used one in Europe for a year and it is a very good car. Nissan have their LEAF electric car out now, and again that is a superb car: in Europe, it won 'European Car of the Year' award, as voted by the top automotive journalists across Europe.

I've been driving various different electric cars over the past five years, and before that ran a company selling electric bikes. I am the author of 'The 2011 Electric Car Guide'.

Some people think that natural gas could be the fuel of choice in some countries in the future as it burns cleaner and is more abundant in the US and others. Answer
NO! The extra weight of the battery & motor will just make it more difficult to learn balance. For the price of just one electric assist bicycle - you could buy three to four really good pedal bicycles.

Electric assist bike - http://www.trekbikes.com/us/en/collections/electric_assist/t80_plus_gl/#
Fitness bike - http://www.trekbikes.com/us/en/bikes/road/fitness/fx/7_2_fx/#

$2,099.99 or $549.99? Your choice. I'd take the $550 bike. It'll last longer too.

I am almost 16 and I weigh about 130 lbs. I am 5ft 6in. i dont want a small bike, but i dont want it to be too big. i was thinking the seat should be about 39 in from the ground little more little less. help me out?

Answer
first thing is if you want a motocross dirt bike there are 2 strokes and 4 strokes. think of a 2 stroke as being half the cc of a 4 stroke with the same power.
so a 125cc 2stroke to 250 cc 4 stroke are similar
and a 250cc 2 stroke to 450cc 4 stroke are similar

the 125-250 class motocross bikes have about the same seat height as the 250-450 class motocross bikes, 35-40 inches.
a 125-250 class motocross bike is a good bike for a rider with some experience or at least willingness to learn. a 250cc-450cc motocross bike is much better for an experienced rider with a good health care coverage plan. they are not for beginners.

so if you want a motocross bike with a 39" seat height you can choose between any 125-250 or 250-450 motocross because the seat heights are all close to the same and offer adjust-ability through lowering the rear shock anyway. one of my friends is about your size and rides a 450cc 4 stroke no problem, but i am 6'2 and on his bike i have to lean over to put a foot flat on the ground.

i think youll be ok with a 125-250cc motocross bike if you have some motorcycle skills. plus youll be able to grow into the bike instead of out grow it like a smaller bike. if you want a bigger bike with a good amount of power, but not a monster dirtbike a 125-250 motocross might be just what your looking for.

one thing you need to consider is that a 250-450 cc motocross bike will likely be a kick start only bike, and are extremely hard to kick start in most cases. and a 125-250cc motocross will be far from easy also.

if you want electric start you can consider a trail bike in the 200cc +- class. they are not as racy and powerfull as the motocross bikes but tend to be more mellow for long rides and you can find them with electric start more easily than a motocross bike. they have enough power to keep you interested for sure. they are usually more reliable and require less maintenance in most cases too. the seat heights will be about 35 inches give or take an inch and in most cases are adjustable up or down like the motocross bikes. they are usually A LOT cheaper too. they sometimes if not always are heavier than a motocross bike with a similar engine size. They often have a headlight which is a huge plus for off road riding, but you can get trail versions of many motocross bikes too, they are just harder to find and will be more expensive. i had a motocross bike for a trail bike with no headlight and i just taped a strong flashlight to my handlebars or helmet. not the best but it works in an emergency.

here is a site link to Yamaha's 2011 dirt bike lineup and it include motocross and trail bikes for you to have a look at. there is a lot of specs and info plus pictures. have a look at seat heights, bikes with headlights, the weight of bikes, etc to help you make a decision on which bike will suit your needs. if you look around at the different brands websites you can find out what dirt bikes they make and the specs of each.

if i where to recommend two trail bikes from yamaha for you they would be the ttr 230 for a trail bike, or the wr250f if you want to spend more for a trail oriented motocross bike.
in the motocross race bike 125-250 class you could choose a yz125 or yz250f. i dont think with your size and weight you will be comfortable with the power of a 250-450cc bike.

Report: Sales of ebikes will reach 130 million yearly before 2025

Recent Submissions
Norway Orthopedic Devices Investment Opportunities, Analysis and Forecasts to 2017 - new market research report:
The LEV industry is growing fast, with greatest strength in China today, but also clearly emerging fast in the rest of the world. Up until the last couple of years, ebike sales were concentrated in China, Japan, and the EU. In the last few years, nearly every nation has bought ebikes from China, and in some cases, the volumes are now significant. Sales will reach 130 million yearly before 2025, make it one of the world's largest industries. The 206 page report encompassing over 70 brands gives forecasts of sales numbers, unit prices and total market value for 2011-2021. 13 market drivers are balanced against many negative factors that are discussed in the report, which has 69 figures and tables and detail on standards and legislation.

LEVs are one of the largest and fastest growing electric vehicle markets. A Light Electric Vehicle LEV is a land vehicle propelled by an electric motor that uses an energy storage device such as a battery or fuel cell, has two or three wheels, and typically weighs less than 100kg. Most LEVs are and will remain ebikes. These are Power on Demand bikes controlled with a throttle. A significant percentage of ebikes sold are scooters in that they have the driver's feet rest on a platform - they are not straddled by the driver.

Today, the LEV industry is dominated by large bicycle companies, due to their access to distribution. We explain why, in the future, these companies will face major competition from, and may be pushed aside by car, motorcycle, and car parts companies. Supply chains for motors, batteries, chassis parts, and nearly every LEV component exist in Asia, primarily in China, Taiwan, Japan, and newly emerging South Korea. We reveal where the highest profits will be obtained in future and the opportunities in components as these change with lithium-ion batteries of several generations and supercapacitors being increasingly employed, for example. The more demanding future technical requirements of users and standards are investigated.

Adjoining sectors are also discussed such as heavy electric motorcycles and the bigger sector of mobility vehicles for the disabled, where ten year forecasts are presented. New crossover vehicles between LEVs and these sectors are presented.

Seniors - What generation do we deem responsible for making the green thing necessary?

best electric bike gadget show on Canada Auto Sales: January Sees Huge Jump, But February Might Be ...
best electric bike gadget show image

DeeJay

I showed this to my oldest daughter (53) and my youngest daughter(45). Each wanted a copy to show their children. The oldest could completely identify with it. The youngest could remember some of how we once lived life.

âTHE GREEN THINGâ
Checking out at the store, the young cashier suggested to the older woman, that she should bring her own grocery bags because plastic bags werenât good for the environment.

The woman apologized and explained, âWe didnât have this green thing back in my earlier days.â

The clerk responded, âThatâs our problem today. Your generation did not care enough to save our environment for future generations.

She was right â our generation didnât have the green thing in our day.

Back then, we returned milk bottles, soda bottles and beer bottles to the store. The store sent them back to the plant to be washed and sterilized and refilled, so it could use the same bottles over and over. So they really were recycled. But we didnât have the green thing back in our day.

We walked up stairs, because we didnât have an escalator in every store or elevator in every office building. We walked to the grocery store and didnât climb into a 300-horsepower machine every time we had to go two blocks away. But she was right. We didnât have the green thing back in our day.

Back then, we washed the babyâs diapers because we didnât have the throw away kind. We dried clothes on a clothes line, not in an energy gobbling machine burning up 22 volts â wind and solar power really did dry our clothes back in our early days. But that young lady is right: we didnât have the green thing back in our day.

Back then, we had one TV, or just a radio in the house â not a TV in every room. And the TV had a small screen the size of a handkerchief. Remember them? Not a screen the size of the state of Montana. In the kitchen, we blended and stirred by hand because we didnât have electric machines to do everything for us. When we packaged a fragile item to send in the mail, we used wadded up old newspapers we saved, to cushion it, no Styrofoam or bubble wrap back then. We didnât fire up an engine and burn gasoline, just to cut the lawn. We used a push mower that ran on human/manpower. We exercised by working so we didnât need to go to a health
club to run on treadmills that operate on electricity. But sheâs right: we didnât have the green thing back then.

We drank from a water fountain when we were thirsty instead of using a throw away cup or plastic bottle every time we had a drink of water. We refilled writing pens with ink instead of buying a new pen, and we replaced the razor blades in a razor instead of throwing away the whole razor just because the blade got dull. But we didnât have the green thing back then.

Back then people took the streetcar or a bus and kids rode their bikes to school or walked instead of turning their moms into a 24 hour taxi service. We had one electrical outlet in a room, not an entire bank of sockets to power a dozen appliances. And we didnât need a computerized gadget to receive a signal beamed from satellites 2,000 miles out in space in order to find the nearest pizza joint.

But isnât it sad the current generation laments how wasteful we old folks were just because we didnât have the green thing back then.
Justin - Thanks for answering. Maybe I should have asked, for thoughts on - what all created it?
ROXY - I didnât post this for a reason to - blame.
I posted it so it could be shared.

My children want to share it with their children and hope to wake them up to the reality of the problem. Sometimes knowing is believing. Iâm still doing my share of conserving and hope everyone will do so.

Answer
You are totally correct, DeeJay.

I am not sure when it started exactly, but the people who
push it, seem to think that it is all their idea and that no
other generation re-used materials.
Apart from milk bottles here in the UK, there is very little
that we do send back to source for re-use today.
Things like Tetra-Pak who gave the world the waxy coated
box/package for liquids thought that they would be doing
the world a favour by saving on glass, but they have simply
added to landfill or incineration plants.
At least glass could be recycled to make more glass containers.
It is a crazy world.!

Can the pedaling energy charge the battery of an electric bike?

best batteries for electric bikes on Electric Bike Manufacturers Directory | Electric Bicycle Companies ...
best batteries for electric bikes image

Drowzzy

Can the mechanical energy of pedaling be stored as electrical energy to be utilized later to run the bicycle automatically? I'm not talking about pure electric bikes that need regular charging, and not even about those that you pedal for a while as the bike stands still and then run it on electric power. I mean can you ride a bike and store the mechanical energy simultaneously? Will it be efficient? If so, then are such e-bikes available in the market, and what are they called so that I may Google for them?

Here's the scenario: I need a bicycle for regular commute, may be even for covering long distances. It's not feasible for a layman to pedal continuously for more than 5 to 10 miles. So I'm looking for a bike that you pedal for sometime, and when you're exhausted, you simply flick a button to make it run on electrical power which has been converted and stored from the mechanical energy of pedaling the bike; and then pedal again and auto-ride again and so forth. Will something like that be technically efficient, since you're moving the bike while pedaling as well as storing your spare energy?

Hope I haven't confused you. Thanks :)

Answer
Yes, it can!

Electric cycles are readily available. You normally charge them from a mains supply and then you can part-pedal / part-drive them on your commute. You can often adjust the amount of assistance to be supplied by the motor enabling you to go faster but less far or vice versa. If you want to pedal the bike and store 50% (say) of your energy for later you can do so but you will be doing double the work when pedalling, so your commute will be, so to say, twice as hard or half as fast and take twice as long. That doesn't seem to make much sense, especially since electric cycles are heavy and pedalling them (with no motor assistance) even without any of your energy going to storage, will be quite slow and tediously tough.

What an electric cycle does do is re-charge the batteries when you go downhill giving you back at least a good fraction of the energy expended in climbing up. But that produces a braking effect and the speed of descent is reduced. What inevitably goes lost is the energy taken by friction and wind resistance. Storing and using later is also subject to a degree of loss.

In short, if you don't want to use a commercial energy source to "fuel" your bicycle, get a conventional one - you'll do vastly better.

Answer
There is already such a motor on the market. The name escapes me right now but it is a hub built into the rear wheel and it costs about $2000... not the Erbike hub motor... I think it is Electricrider or something like that.

To your request, yes, it is possible and a project I am working on right now. No, I can't and won't divulge details but CAN tell you that you'll see it relatively soon and it WILL be expensive- more expensive than a small motorcycle at this point.

By the way... I typically commute 24 miles (one way) to work on a bicycle, no problem. 5-10 mile commute is simple for most committed riders.

Are electric motorcycles cool?

best electric bikes for 2013 on Top 10 Colleges in India by Times Higher Education - Oneindia ...
best electric bikes for 2013 image

BobbleColo

So, I am shopping for my first motorcycle. I was looking at a few bikes. A Ducati Monster 696, a Ninja 600, and a 2013 Zero S (not 2012). The 2013 Zeros have different motors and batteries that give it near 600cc equivalent performance and a 130+ mile range at a top speed of 95MPH. I am a huge EV enthusiast and I currently drive an all-electric car. I'd love an EV motorcycle like the Zero S, but there is one very important factor to consider... the "cool" factor. Do you think EV bikes like the 2013 Zero S are as cool as those other petrol bikes? Or, would the ladies be more inclined to hop on the back of a noisy ICE bike?

Answer
You have an all-electric car -- you are already totally un-cool. Nothing could make you cool so you might as well get a Zero.

Answer
Liberals don't care how much we pay for gas... They want us all to ride bikes, electric scooters, fly on magic carpets and whatever else liberals do. Gas prices suck and so does this state. Sick of this state and its controlling govt with high taxes to pay for more dumb programs and have them tell what I need and don't need. California needs to split 3 ways, north, south, and Bay Area. All the libs can stay in the bay and have their way, republicans up top, dems down below, everyone's happy and the libs aren't making legislature for anyone but themselves.

I would really love to start cycling this summer, but I honestly don't even know where to start. I'm female and 5' 4.5" and I need to know what kind of bike would suit me best. A specific bike or brand would help a lot or a website to go to. Thank you so much!

Answer
If you are going to really ride any miles, you want a dedicated road bike. You should invest in a good quality, aluminum-frame road bike if you want efficient transportation on pavement. I found that switching from a hybrid comfort bike to a low-end road bike increased my commuting speed 30% over my sixteen-mile daily ride.

I found a Trek 1500 that weighs about 20 pounds with narrow tires. I travel downhill at 42 MPH, level at 25 MPH, with an uphill speed of about 8 MPH. Total terrain average is 12 MPH.

I shopped around year-old models at 20% discount, but found a Trek 1500 demo model at a 40% discount in a 60 cm frame size. I am 6'2" at 195 pounds, a perfect fit. With accessories, I spent $800 with a tire repair kit, pump, and lock.

Within the first 1,000 miles, I had five flat tires. I replaced the tires with a Schwalbe Marathon Plus on the rear and a Continental Gator on the front. I had no flat tires over the second 1,000 miles. The tires cost about $100.

I spent more than $100 on Night Rider 15 watt headlight and rechargeable battery pack. I bought a back-up Cat Eye lamp with four rechargeable AA batteries. I also bought red flashers for the seat post and helmet, with a duct tape loop on the helmet to hold the LED lamp. Since I ride in below-zero windchills, I paid $160 for Hotronic electric footbed heaters in leather shoes that cost $100. I also wear layers of fleece with North Face waterproof pants and Spyder backpack cover, figure another $200.
So, I spent about $1,600 on everything that I needed for 2,000 miles of riding in the past year. Spread over five years, bicycle commuting will cost me less than $0.15 per mile, which is cheaper than driving a car and provides great fitness.

how good are dnepr motorcycles and how long have they stopped making them?

shoetou

I would like to buy a Dnepr motorcycle what year did they stop production and how good are they the one I am looking at is a kit bike he says itâs a 750 cc has electric start and seams to be all there. We had it started it runs. What kind of problems can I get in to? And can any body tell me about the switch under the seat and what itâs for.

Answer
Dnepr motorcycles were first made in 1970 and are still made today. There is more about them here: http://www.bikez.com/brand/index.php?brand=54

Dnepr motorcycles seem to have a common heritage with the Ural, based on the BMW R71. But the information I found is a bit scarce and sometimes conflicting. As near as I can tell, the Dnepr was the Russian military version of the old BMW, and it never, (at least until very recently) was offered for sale to civilians. It has much the same capabilities as the Ural offering two wheel drive with the sidecar, great off road capability and basically is what you would expect to find with a Russian military motorcycle based on old technology.

Since Ural has a longer history of civilian sales, fit, finish and overall quality are higher. The Dnepr is currently being imported into the U.S. by the Russian-American Motorbike Company in Seattle and are sold as kits.

Also, there are a couple of discussion groups on these bikes on yahoogroups.com. Put Dnepr in the search box at http://groups.yahoo.com/.

Q. ok, i got an idea to put a skillsaw motor on a bicycle and use lithium batteries off an electric wheelchair. you guys think it'll work?? any advice or cautions??

Answer
You can simply buy an electric bicycle conversion kit, which is basically just an electric motor you attach to your bicycle. There are many available, and they've been specifically designed for that purpose. Splicing something together might be a fun project, but no doubt it wouldn't work nearly as well.

Is there a kit I can buy to make my bike solar powered?

Chris Kemp

I want to make my bike solar powered. I would like to just be able to plug my bike into a solar panel and then unplug for use. It would also be cool if I could pedal and the bike charges from peddling. I want a price range of $50-$100 and not that astalian company. Thanks!

Answer
Search the web for electric bicycle conversion, and you'll find some kits. The price is going to be more like $500. Sorry, I know that's not what you wanted to hear. And that price does not include a solar panel.

The wall chargers for the bike batteries are often 24 or 36 volts, and might be replaced with a large solar panel with some tinkering. However, a better scheme would be to connect the solar to your house wiring through grid-tie, because then you would get the benefit of solar electricity every minute that the sun is shining, not just when the bike battery is plugged in. The bike could still be charged from the wall outlet.

Get a nice test ride for speed and hill climbing.
Get all warranties in writing.

Try a Bionx Dealer, Bioinx is pretty reliable.

So here is a partial Bay area listing:

Try Santa Cruz, they have a bunch.

If my kill switch on my motorcycle was broke off will the motorcycle still start?

J P

Sorry guys... it is a 1982 kawasaki kz1100 .It was in storage and the key was lost also the kill switch on the throttle grip was broken i was wondering if after i get a key made if i am going to have problems with this switch being broken...

Answer
The kill switch on a motorcycle is basically exactly what it says. A means to kill the engine. It does so by shorting out the electric by grounding it to the handlebar.
If the switch was broke in such a way that the wire touched the handlebar it won't start. If it was broke and the wire didn't hit the bar it would start but render the switch inoperative.
As another said you didn't mention the make or style of the bike. If it has an ignition you can use it to shut off the bike. Some use the kill switch to shut them down. If this is the case you can make another switch easily by using what we did when racing. Attach the wire to a piece of metal, (we used a piece of hacksaw blade) wrap tape around the handlebar and the blade so that the blade has tape to keep it off the bar on one end and lays on the bar on the other. This shorts out the bike and it wont run. Now put a small piece of leather under the one end of the blade and the bike will start and run. Pull out the leather and it shorts out again. We used this in hill climbing and racing by attaching the leather by a strap wrapped around our wrist. If we left the bike the strap would pull out and the bike would kill.

How much does it cost to make a bike electronic?

I got a touring bike but I live on dirt roads and dirt roads make me really tired. Im looking to make my bike electric so I wont get tired on the dirt roads then pedal the rest of the way on paved roads. How much does the battery cost and the electric motor cost? Im only gonna use it for 4 miles on my dirt roads then the rest of the way I pedal.

Answer
before you try to make your bike electric (which I agree is probably prohibitively expensive), there are a few things that you can do to make your ride on dirt roads easier. First, are you using your lowest (easiest to pedal) gears, or are you using a high (difficult to pedal) gear? If it is the latter, start using your lowest gears. If you are using your lowest gears and it is still wearing you out too badly, go to your local bike shop and have your gearing changed so you have lower gears. With the right gearing, an electric bike should be unnecessary. Most bikes come with gearing that is too high anyway. You may also want to consider larger tires, if the reason you are tired out is from getting beaten up by an uncomfortable bike.

How to fix a flat tire on electric moped?

KZ

I got a mini electric moped from one of my friends just to screw around on. The back tire is messed up and will not even air up. Is there something i can put in is that will harden the whole thing or anything at all i can do. I dont really want to buy a whole new tire for it. I just want something to fix it or make it so it wont be flat. Any ideas?

Thank you

Answer
Kz, there should be a tube in the tire, remove the wheel first. Have someone who has patched a bike tire before show you how to remove the tube, and repair the tube with a glue patch.

Then air it up & check the tube for leaks with a spray bottle of soapy water, replace the tube & wheel, and go.

With respect to converting your bike to electric, you have 3 ways to go:

A hub motor kit
a sneaky crank motor kit
or a friction motor kit

There are also many home made conversions that use the chain drives:

What is the difference between a "bicycle working prototype" and a "bicycle market prototype"?

For the same bicycle product/concept there are many production phases to be accomplished until a market product get alife. During these phases different prototypes are built if required.

Answer
There can be a lot of difference. A working prototype is often cobbled together by a mechanic. A market prototype is more refined , and is an element in test marketing.
I have had experience with building prototype bicycles, and I have a few photos to share:

This is Type 3, which has a fairing made of Kevlar (Dupont trademark aramid fiber) built in 1987:
http://i134.photobucket.com/albums/q119/hotbike/00000008-1.jpg

After testing it on people, other suggestions were taken into consideration. The next photo is of the Type 9, built in 1993, and made of fiberglass. The fairing is smaller because testing the larger fairing in Florida revealed that the riders got to hot, it blocked off air. Also, the newer fairing has a storage compartment big enough for 12 x 12ounce beverage cans. And the new design has the fairing mounted to the frame, not the handlebars, so it is much more stable. This bike cost $270.00 to build and sold (Dutch Auction) for $1,200.00.
http://i134.photobucket.com/albums/q119/hotbike/00000023-1.jpg

This photo is of the Type 7, which I did not sell. The fairing was designed by the same women who designed the Type 9:
http://i134.photobucket.com/albums/q119/hotbike/photo003.jpg

I skipped using the number eight, because , like a game of pool, I want the eightball to be last.

Since building these bikes , there has been a lot of electric bikes going into production in China, some 16 million per year. So I would like to cut my losses by bringing in bikes from China. Maybe I will continue to build my own on a one-time, custom basis, but the consumer is only concerned about cost.

Why do some women have kids just to dump them in daycare?

They ca

Now that I have your attention, I have a legit question. Why do people have children just to dump the child off in school once they turn 5 years old? We have these people making judgements about daycare, yet isn't school the same thing? Kids are in school for about the same amount of time. Just think we they get older and are involved in sports/band/choir/etc. How terrible that these children can't spend every second of everyday with their parents.
(note the sarcasm)
Kimberly, see where Isaid note the sarcasm?//I posted this because Ise daycae-bashing question every day. MY ids aren't in daycare but I know parents who have to put their kids in daycare. I've seen people say on here "Oh, those poor childrne have to be away from mommy 8 hours out of the day." Now remind me how many hours a child is in school? Isn't it 7 or 8. Then when they start with sports and then an after school job when they turn 15 or 16, that's even less time with mommy and daddy. Why don't these same people complain about this even though not sending your kid to school is illegal?

Answer
Like Ellie said, thank goodness you were being sarcastic, cause I was very tempted to give you a tongue lashing too! :)

I don't understand why either group, (the SAHM's or the working moms), feel it necessary to insult and put down others for the choice they have made. The comment that people have made, "Why have kids if you are going to have daycares raise the?" is just really rediculous! So basically, without just outright saying it, these people are saying that unless someone is financially able to stay at home with their children and not use a daycare or a private babysitter, then they don't deserve to be a parent. That is very judgemental and just plain hateful. Not every woman has the luxery of falling in love and marrying a man who makes $35-60,000 a year. I married one who only makes about $25,000 and brings home alot less after he pays child support on his children from his ex-wife and insurance premiums on all the kids. I don't think the fact that I didn't marry someone who made alot of money, means that I dont deserve to have children.

What about a woman who is widowed? My best friend was widowed with 2 young children, and had no choice but to work to support her kids. So I guess according to some of these women, she didn't deserve to have the kids, because she ended up having to put them in daycare. Point is, no woman, even these ones that are so freely judgeing working moms, know how their life will turn out and what might happen to them.

I don't know any woman who enjoys dropping her kids off at a daycare in the mornings, I certainly don't. But my husband and I live in an older house, and have had alot of things break, like our hot water heater, pipes, leaking roof. We have not had the money to repair these things outright, so we have had to charge them on a credit card. The motor on my car blew up and it cost over $2,000 to fix it, so again that went on the credit card. I was a SAHM for 18 months, and any unexpected large expense that came up, went on that cerdit card. So, I will be trying to pay all that off for years now. But it was either do that, or go without hot water, or no water, or have no vehicle. Which would have ended up hurting my kids more than me. So I did go back to work, and I do have to take my daughter to a babysitter during the day.

I do not live an extravagant life. I don't go shopping every month, I don't have a Coach purse, we don't have 4 wheelers or motor bikes, we don't go on vacations, we don't eat out every week, I don't buy new clothes for myself on even a monthly basis. If I have an extra money, from working over time or getting a bonus at work, I spend it on my husband or kids, not on myself. I took some extra money I had about 4 years ago, and bought my husband one of those $65.00 do-it-yourself outdoor pond kits, and some cheap 25 cent goldfish to go in it, and helped him make it, for fathers day, and I have had women on here tell me that was an expensive, frivolus expense and that is probably the reason I have to work, cause I am wasting money. I never knew buying my husband a fathers day gift would be considered "wasting money"!

If a mom chooses to work, because she does not want to stay at home at her childrens expense, then I don't think that makes her selfish at all. In fact I think it makes her a loving, wonderful mom. If choosing to stay at home, means that you and your husband have to stretch and skrimp so much with his paycheck, that you find yourself telling your kids "No, you can't have that, we can't afford it." or not taking them out to eat or to the movies occasionally (cause you have to pay the electric bill), not being able to buy them new clothes or toys occasionally (and I don't mean the cheap $2.00 toys at the Dollar Store that fall apart within 3 days) or you just simply have no extra money for "extras", then I do think that the mom staying at home ends up affecting the kids in a not so

ROCKY

is there as compared to petrol bikes & cars

Answer
"Performance" has several factors. We generally think of this on the basis of an IC engine. As a result we tend to think of acceleration, handling and fuel economy. With battery electric vehicles there is also a reference to the vehicle range on a charge. While "range anxiety" is not usually a consideration in an ICE vehicle I do recall a time in the Australian outback where I would have given almost anything for a petrol station.

Generally it takes longer for electrons to flow into a battery than for gasoline to fill a gas tank. Electrons will flow into an ultracapacitor far more quickly and development of ultracapacitors that can hold sufficient charge will resolve the issue. Alternatively if they can be made cheaply enough they could be included with batteries and will extend the life of batteries and enable the vehicle to be quickly charged with energy (from ultracapacitors at "fueling" stations. Presently the best that an electric vehicle can offer is less concentration on fueling. You fuel at home. It takes seconds to start and stop a charge. The rest of the time you can be doing other things. Alternatively you must make special trips to fueling stations where someone must pay attention to the fueling process.

Batteries in an BEV (battery electric vehicle) are typically low in the vehicle. This improves handling as it lowers the center of gravity. Acceleration in electric vehicles is better than ICE vehicles due to full torque starting from 0 RPM in electric motors.1

Under present economic conditions an electric vehicle can save its owner approximately $1000 to $1400 per year in fueling costs in addition to the increase in performance.2 The vehicle except for batteries has a projected life many times that of ICE vehicles, possibly as much as 80 years as compared to the life expectancy of an ICE vehicle of about 10 years. Present batteries have a life expectancy of between 5 to 10 years and may represent 1/2 the investment in the vehicle. Ultra capacitors would have an expected life that exceeds the rest of the vehicle. There is some question about whether the electric vehicle will depreciate very rapidly with little residual value or if the addition of newer battery packs or even ultracapacitors would be like adding an addition to real estate and possibly restore or even exceed the original value of the vehicle. It may be possible that the vehicles will appreciate rather than depreciate like a very few of the classic ICE vehicles. 3

What is the best way to purchase a moped / electric scooter?

StraightBa

I have decided to buy a moped (or electric scooter) to use casually around my neighborhood (not for extremely long hauls).

Since I don't know much about mopeds, the only place I went to was vespa.com. Most of their options are extremely expensive. I'm looking to spend no more than $1,000.

I'm looking for recommendations about obtaining one. Are their other good companies besides vespa? Are their moped/dealer shops that I could visit locally to actually see the different options.

Should I go and test drive one, like I do with cars? Or is this something I should simply buy online (and go that route).

Any other things I should be looking for?

Answer
Mopeds have pedals, scooters have floorboards.
Vespas are scooters, expensive scooters. You can get around just as well on other brands like Kymco, Genuine, Piaggio, Yamaha, Sym, and Honda but you aren't going to get any of those new for $1000.
You might be able to get a Chinese scooter new for that but even that is doubtful since scooter prices have gone up quite a bit. Also from what I hear many of shops are out of scooters these days so you might want to call around to see who has what.
I read a good review on a Velocity electric scooter but I don't know the cost.
As far as mopeds you might call some bicycle stores and see if they carry electric bikes. I have never seen one in a scooter or motorcycle dealer.
You might be able to find something used on Craigslist.
Other things....
Check into what your local laws are for licensing. In CA we have to have a M2 license even for mopeds. Some states don't require anything for up to 50cc scooters.
Figure out how fast you will need to go before you buy something. Don't get a scooter that top ends at 30 when you have to get on roads where traffic goes 45.
If you want to get more info on drop ship (online) scooters check out the scootdawg forum. A lot of the people there own Chinese scooters and might be able to point you towards better brands and dealers.
