should i buy an xb-500 electric bike to got to work?

Evan R

Answer
Absolutely, (as long as you're within 15 miles from your work) - any time we can find something that will save the environment - I say, go for it! Plus they're pretty nice looking.
But I would first check your state motor vehicle laws before buying it just to be sure that you can drive it on the roads. Some states are funny about electric mopeds and scooters.
If you're in Canada (at least in Ontario) some electric bikes/scooters that have operating pedals don't even have to be registered.
Also, don't pay much over $650 (with shipping). This site has the best deals and shipping is low,

Good luck to you!

Can anyone recommend an electric mini-bike?

DarkSerge5

I am newly interested in small recreational motor vehicles and am interested in purchasing a beginning minibike. I was looking at the Serengeti Badger 450, and wanted to try and find other bikes like it. Problem is, that seems to be the only electric one I came across with that look. Can anyone recommend to me any electric minibikes similar to the Badger and within the same price range?

Answer
Yamaha do an effective ( it works) electric bicycle, but it is pricy, however, it works and here in the UK it is being purchased.
Everything depends on the battery technology, which has a way to go yet.

I would wait about 5 years myself, then they could get good. Meantime, look at the Dutch diesel bikes this may be a better way to go

Has anyone ever come across electric bikes and mopeds? I have seen more and more people around with electric bikes and I saw that a few of my friends have got electric mopeds, £700!! what a bargain!!!? i was recommended this website... tell me what you think ?

www.2wheelelectric.co.uk
Well these bikes are my dads and they are fantastic! they sold out within the first week of import and a pre-order basis has half sold out the next container

Answer
I have an electric bike (my second). You need to buy quality in order to get reliability. Two reliable manufacturers are Giant (the most popular brand in Japan), and Schwinn. These bikes are not cheap.

I'll give you a hint: Hub motors have some disadvantages compared to motors that drive the bicycles chain, namely low speed thrust for climbing steep hills with heavy loads. But that never actually becomes a factor because your speed never drops too far when you ride an electric bike. The good outweighs the bad when it comes to hub motors.

I recommend Crystalyte 5000 series hub motors. And absolutely pay a little extra and get lithium batteries. The lighter weight means longer range and better performance, and they pay for themselves in the long run because they have a longer life span.

It's going to cost you some money if you want the best quality. If you don't like the sticker shock, walmart sells an electric bicycle you can search for on their website. It's dirt cheap and it will last a few years if you take care of it.

I would suggest MR CANADA IMPORTS - www.mrcanadaimports.com, they are a distributor and wholesaler of brand name model electric e-bikes, Mountain Electric Cycle, Folding Electric Bike, and city e-bike versions, including a popular model for use is the stb-mountain bike "Series E03, E01, F02 older clients" < very good seller for us.

No matter if your located in USA or CANADA or UK, i would contact these guys, these models are unlike regular store brand electric bikes, as you will see when you see them, they feature 36V 10Ah Li-ion battery as you requested and much more.. The Emode time is the best on the market, highest electric mileage then any other model currently sold.

These have helped our sales for this coming season since we have sold-out
all our first stock via pre-orders. If i was you i would order some samples now, display in your store and base your orders on the demand of that model.

good luck on your ventures..
you might want to provide free replacement tires with each purchase to obtain those sales, this is what we offer with the puncture resistant K-shield tires in 3 of our stores, and the response has been very good :)
the wait time including delivery for us was an average of 45 days for 460 units.

Are electric bicycle conversion kits worth it?

Filip N

I understand 750Watts and/or 20mph speed without pedaling is the limit in most U.S. but, if I have a kit like that, is it worth it? Is the quality very bad? Who are trusted/reliable vendors of such kits? If I am guaranteed that speed and reasonable distance to get to school and back 20+20mi should i do it? Gas is $3.49 here, even a 250cc bike is like, expensive :(

Answer
Worked on these for a few years in different shops.
Have seen some very sketchy products marketed from china that offgas chemicals
I would only recommend http://www.bionx.ca/en/ then http://crystalyte.com/

The Bionx kit is now built into a bike marketed through Trek,
http://www.trekbikes.com/us/en/bikes/electric_bikes/
They will do what is advertised but the batteries will not last long. I would honestly rather point you at a gas motor kit for the mileage your planning. It will be cheaper in the long run

Electric Bikes?

Q. Hi, for next christmas I was hoping to buy an electric bike.

However I dont know where I could get one from.

If you could please give me some links, advice, whats needed and costs for them I would be most greatful.

Thanks!
thanks alot...

Answer
There is no one "best" ebike for all situations, dont let anyone tell you different. There are many factors to consider, such as: the bicycle frame, your price range, your performance needs, your installation requirements, and after market service needs.

So lets take some well rated ebikes (all of which I have sold and still service) and compare them:

Giant suede-e (no longer sold, a few still available new, still have service and parts) a little low on power for big guys hauling large loads in tough terrain, BUT VERY Reliable and pretty light weight. Un modifiable. Turnkey- no installation issues and no service or parts issue. $1.1k

Cyclone Kit currrently sold on the internet and a few places across the US (Including me in Colorado) GREAT power. Can be a pain to install, so you have to have a specific bike for it to fit, and someone to help with or do the install unless you are pretty darn good with tools. good value, can make slight modifications, parts available, but not much service.

Bionx Kit, 36v more power than than Giant suede-e, lots of nifty hard to find features, Very bicycle-like for a kit, fairly pricy, easy install, parts available, some service. unmodifiable.

EZee bikes and kits, pretty reliable, good parts, some service, can be either a kit or a turnkey bike. moderate performance. a little pricey, but not a lot. minor mods.

Crystalyte. can be anything you want it to be, not real bicyle like. Lots of parts and internet service advise. reasonable price, controller less than the most reliable. You install- easier than a cyclone, harder than a bionx.

If you need the best performance for the money and you can work with tools and pick out your bike, then Cyclone might be best.

For today total turnkey, maybe an EZEE.

Really want to retain the bicyle feel & arent having extremes of demands- try Bionx.

With all ebikes, all connections are the biggest reliability issue, next are throttles then controllers unless stated above.

You will need to look at some discussion groups to get the best lowdown for your situation.

Is there a way electric magnets can be used to make hovering automobiles?

Little Mon

Maybe we could use powerful electric magnets like they use in junk yards to propel them and maybe we could use high speed fans or magnets to move them.

I was thinking of magnets in the roads maybe? Or better yet there may be a way we could use the earths natural magnetisation.

These things should exist. This is 2012 and I'm sick of people dreaming about the future. It's time we get off of our аsses and made hovering cars, printers that print objects rather than sheets of paper, robots that cook for us and answer questions faster than google can.

Anyway, do you think theres a way we can use magnetisation to propel human carriers?

I personally think we should ditch automobiles and use subways, buses (hovering buses), bicycles, and cabs for emergencies.

Answer
The future is here already...we already have maglev trains that operate in some countries on the principle of magnetic levitation. The problem with doing so with cars/trucks/buses is the cost of installing such systems on freeways/roads and equipping vehicles with the system...too expensive but some cities have proposed plans for such systems. But for now, mass transit Maglev trains will do and are much more efficient at transporting people/cargo than cars/trucks/buses. Even conventional trains are more efficient...a train can carry 1 ton of product or people some 436 miles on 1 gallon of fuel. Barges and ships are even better.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maglev_(transport)
http://old.post-gazette.com/maglev/maglev01.asp

We also have 3D printers that print entire objects as you say and Japan is a world leader in robotics due to their rapidly aging population...fewer young people to take care of the elderly so their plan is to create robotic assistants for the elderly....cooking, serving, vacuuming, shopping, etc..Look up ASIMO for one. Israel as well is developing robotics for military purposes since they have a small population compared to their enemy neighbors.

What's considered a "low price" for new cars? Nissan Leaf?

Choua T

I'm planning on saving up for a Nissan Leaf. I have a few questions about it. When i looked it up, I see that the steering wheel is on the right side. I can't find any that are on the left side. Is that how the Nissan LEAF's are supposed to be? It's said to be $32,780. Is that considered low? I've been looking at the 2010-2011 ones. Also, what's the ball thing that looks like it's a replacement for the PRNDL? I've been looking it up, but nothing is coming up! Help please!

Answer
You have to get your deposit in right away on the leaf web site and have your house checked for charging starion. A dedicated 20 amp plug will be needed that might mean calling a electrician to run wires to your circuit breaker box and placing a outlet where you would like to plug in your car. There will not be any sale prices on Leaf for quite some time. American Leaf will be left hand drive Leaf is a larger car than it appears 5 passengers Mid-size. Biggest thing is electric drive Knob shifts reverse or forward. No gears electric motor is direct drive and extremely quiet. Your starting very late to get one of the first year leaf. I think at the dealership we'll see the first cars around late December early January 2011. Electricians were checking The dealership where I work A couple days ago. Also check your electrical power provider it would be nice if they have lower rates at night. Personally I want a total electric car I ride a electric Bicycle I will wait a year or two. My commute is only 11 miles to and from work 90 to 100 range will be just right for 99% of my driving. But I will keep MY 2006 GTO fire breathing internal combustion car. Chevrolet says Volt plug in Hybrid will be over $40,000. Go Green

dirt bike hard to start?

i have an 08 yamaha ttr 125 dirt bike and the electric starter sucks so i normally kick it and it usually takes only about three kicks when not hot. but yesterday and today both when i tried starting it, it took about fourty kicks each time. any ideas of what could be causeing this? thanks

Answer
first i would just go through the bike and change the oil, air filter, spark plug.. and then try starting it.. if it still gives you trouble:
once you get it started turn the gas petcock off and let the bike run out of gas in the carb.. cuz there may be a little crap in there.. and if it still is giving you problems bring it to a yamaha dealer cuz they normally stand behind there bikes and will fix it for cheep.. it could be something like a broken needle valve in the carb which was like a $125 fix on most bikes

Electric-start Yamaha dirt bike won't start... help please.?

Kelso M

It's a 230 cc, and the battery is new and charged. It was used a month ago, but the starter only clicks when I press the starter button. The fuses are all fine. The engine doesn't even turn over. It just clicks once.

Tried to arc the solenoid terminals ( my dad did... he connected the two with a screw driver) and it sparked, but I don't think he knew what he was doing. I don't know if this is relevant.

Anyway, any suggestions?
The battery is charged, connections are good... I checked all this stuff. Does a dirtbike have brushes? Could they be going bad?

Answer
Either a bad connection or the battery is not really charged. A click is a sign of a dead battery. Clean the terminals and try again.
Bump start it if you have to. Ride it for 20 minutes and then try the starter again.
Did you just charge the battery or was it charged a month ago when it was installed? Bikes can drain a battery when sitting.

electric bike recommendation?

I am looking for an electric bike for exercise for under $500. I want electric because my area is very hilly and I want to get exercise but I'm just not in shape enough to make it up the hills without some help. Ideas for the best in my price range?

Answer
Forget the electric bike they are hard to pedal and using the motor wont give you any exercise. If you want exercise get a used stationary bike off of Craig's list or better yet go to the local bike shop and get a good hybrid bike. It will take time to be able to climb hills, if you have to get off and walk.

electric pocket bikes!!?

Tanner C

I Want a Electric pocket bike for my birthday and i cant decide which one to get!! I have seen the Xp-700 rice pocket bike and the minimoto maxii 400.Which one is better? If there are faster ones than those please tell me!!
ok never mind!! I am loking at gas ones now and i want one that goes around 30 mph. It needs to have a speedometer and lights and stuff. Needs 20 be between 100$ and 350$ Thanks!!!

Answer
I got an X1 Ninja 49cc pocket bike and my brother got a Giovanni pocket bike. Mine fit great and was big enough to be comfortable and not feel like you're riding a rollerskate, but had poor acceleration because of the clutch. His, on the other hand, had great speed, but was so tiny that the smallest bump made the name "krotch rocket" live up to its potential. Ended up buying my brothers, and with some modifications put the racing motor in mine.
BEST pocket bike ever. Worked well even offroad, and went about 45 tops. If you are looking for the bike like the one I made, you need to be good at modifying things. If not, and you want the fastest, most powerful, the 110cc pocket bikes are FAST, up to 75mph.
I would choose the ninja X series (x1, x2, x7, ect(the one that looks like an actual street bike)) style pocket bikes and simply upgrade the clutch. Not that hard to do, and would leave you with a sturdy, fast, strong bike.

Answer
Legal Low Powered Electric Assist bikes are now becoming a great alternative for tens of thousands of commuters in the US. Use an ebike for commuting and save the price of the ebike in insurance savings and service costs, And still get a workout- no more time on that dreaded treadmill at the spa.

Some young fit folks may never need one, but, if you are one of the folks that really does not want to take their car EVERYWHERE, especially to just get a loaf of bread, Ebikes may be the thing for you.

They all have on/off switches and a way to control the level of assist. People might use maximum assist going to work, but minimum assist going home for a workout. If you have asthma or arthritis, an ebike makes the bicycling world yours again- on good days- minimum assist, on bad days - you still don't have to get in the car- just use more assist.

Fifty percent of households own bicyles but less than 5% of them use them regularly. Over 50% of households with ebikes use them on a regular basis.

Some people use their $2,000 racing bike as a roof ornament and a badge of being a yuppie. Other people take ebikes every where, saving lots of money, helping the environment, and stayiing quite fit. YOU DO HAVE TO PEDAL, other wise your range is really shortened.

Right now you can get an ebike that will go 30 miles, (with your pedal assist) make it up most any hill in most cities, feels like a normal bike, can bring home 40 lbs of groceries and has no more service issues than a normal bicycle -for about $1500. And have local service in MANY US cities.

There are today some really great ebikes, much better than 3 years ago. The Bionx, www.bionx.ca , has the most bicycle like feel, and great range. Cyclone, www.cyclone-usa.com , has the most power.
Crystalyte system kits have pretty good value
http://www.poweridestore.com .

In most US states, Ebikes are legally limited to 20mph under electric power, must have pedals that work, less than 750 watts of power, and 2 or 3 wheels (not 4), and are legal where other bikes are legal. Check your state though.

For reasons of test riding and long term support, it is highly suggested that you buy your first one from a local dealer, unless you like to work on such things your self.

The average ebike rider puts on more miles than the average regular bike rider. Why? Ebikes are more fun, less hassle, and there are just less excuses to take the car.

Many ebikes are also light enough to be put on many city busses and trains- helping with "multi-mode" commuting.

(But be careful, there is some junk out there)

What is the best kind of bicycle? The one you will ride.

Try the following yahoo discussion group for indepth information on specific ebikes:

http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/power-assist/

There are great ebike dealers in Texas, Colorado, Seattle, Georgia, New York, California, Kansas, Illinois, Utah, Nevada; the list goes on and on.

Electric bike, permits, anything?

Justin

I have an electric bike and im wondering if i need any permits, papers, licenses, anything to operate, use, or drive this type of transportation around?

Answer
In the UK, there are requirements they must meet in order to be road legal:

Check out: http://www.powacycle.co.uk/Are-electric-bikes-legal.asp

The main thing is the pedals, as it would be classed as a bicycle. An electric bike without them, would be illegal to ride on a public road, without number plates, tax, insurance, type approval and proper lights.

I'd at least wear a cycle helmet, plus reflective clothing and bike lights (if not already fitted).

Depends on local, state and federal laws in the US, ask your local DMV.

What is the lifespan of an electric bike?

archa_pyus

Say you have an electric bicycle that is used daily, capable of a 30 mile range before needing re-fuelling and a speed range of 3-15mph.

What would be its likely lifespan, i.e. when would the whole thing have to be replaced?

I do not need exact measurements, just the general idea, as it is for a project for which i have to design an electric bike, which i know nothing about.

thank you!

Answer
The life span of an electric bike is mostly determined by the battery. Batteries can have a memory and if recharged before depleting it completely will reduce the capacity and can affect the range.

I would do some research on batteries. You can also look up motorized hubs to put on bikes, they make for the cleanest design.

Motors are rated in watts and most states have regulations that control the maximum amount of power that you can use.

How reliable are electric bikes?

bob

Answer
the biggest problem with electric anything is battery power. The technology is coming, but its not there yet, and the big reason is cost, it takes millions of dollars in research to make something small enough, with enough power that is stable (not likely to EXPLODE) THAT YOU CAN make portable, Right now range equates to wieght , and who wants to carry 1,500 lb battery packs around? not me.
The technology is coming, its not quite there yet, the next 10 years should be interesting, as the greedy oil strangling govornments fight over dwindeling oil supplies, where will the battery powerd technology take us Especially in the UNITED STATES. WE are making big advancements every day, but this must be met with caution, we are not where we need to be with battery technology yet.

Electric bike engine questions.?

ok so guys, recently iv thought hey, why not put an engine on a bike..
now my first problem was electric or fuel. iv chosen electric since it is quiet, no fuel, easier etc.
but.. i have no clue on what 'sort' of engine, whats big enough to push a bike along. i really dont need to go fast maybe 10km/h or 20km/h. Maybe even, just helpout my pedaling. i understand batteries, and connecting to the wheel. what engine do i need? hopefully under $50.

If i was you i would order some samples now, display in your store and base your orders on the demand of that model.

good luck on your ventures..
you might want to provide free replacement tires with each purchase to obtain those sales, this is what we offer with the puncture resistant K-shield tires in 3 of our stores, and the response has been very good :)
the wait time including delivery for us was an average of 45 days for 460 units.

contact: Jon Steveson, jon.steveson@mrcanadaimportsDOTcom

if you require good service, these are the guys to contact, and come Christmas you'll really enjoy their services and free gifts :) please tell jon, you spoke with me about their products, and your a close business partner of mine. He will do the rest. good luck again, RIDE HARD!!! WELL NOT REALLY ITS ELECTRIC! lol

Do I need a license to drive this Electric Bike in NYC?

John

I received this 100% electric motor cycle called a "Brammo Enertia" as a gift, however I'm 18 years old and only have a driver's permit, and I live in New York city. Will I need a special permit to drive this? Or can I drive this without a license? By the way I would be taking it on highways, and roads where mainly cars drive, also would I have to buy insurance for it?

Here's more info on the bike
http://www.motorcycle-usa.com/17/1609/Motorcycle-Article/2008-Brammo-Enertia-First-Ride.aspx

Answer
No and yes. As of now electric bikes with pedals that can NOT go faster than 18 miles per hour have no legislative laws in NY. This may or may not change in the near future. They are considering the issue in the NY State Senate as of now. Bikes, especially those without pedals, that can go faster must be registered and insured as if they were motorcycles. You will need a motorcycle licence. Besides it not a bad idea to have insurance anyway.

I live on a hill and need transportation to school/ Electric Scooter?

Joe M

I live on a hill and its is very difficult to come home. I can't drive and there are no bus or train stops near me. Biking isn't an option because coming home is the worst. Do you need a license to drive an electric scooter? Do need a helmet as well? How do they do on hills? How heavy are they? I was thinking about an electric or kick scooter. If I get a kick scooter I can carry it home because it only weighs 5 pounds. Please help me pick or suggest something new, by experience only please.

Answer
I've never owned an electric scooter, but I think it would be way too weak for your hill. Right now I ride a 70cc Honda scooter, and even that's a little weak for hill climbing. It'll get up the hill I have to climb, but everyone else is doing the speed limit, 45, while I'm doing 35 or 40. You might be lighter and more aerodynamic than me, but you should go with 100cc or more. And buy a Honda, Yamaha or Suzuki if you can afford it. Stay away from the Chinese garbage.

Electric Motorcyle Issue?!!??!?

Josh

I'll be using 4 lead acid deep cycle batteries that put out 875 CCA and 205 amps continuous and so forth but the motor only uses 133 amps and 48 volts, just want to know if the controller should be rated at 300 amps, 400 amps, 550 amps? I'm wanting to get a curtis controller off ebay and found all three but which one!???

Answer
In my opinion, any one of those would work fine. The main difference is in the level of performance you want out of this bike. A higher amp controller will give you let you climb hills faster, and give faster acceleration in general. The top speed is the same unless you go to a higher voltage. The trade off is, when you are running more amps through your motor & cables, they will heat up and fail if the motor doesn't have some means of cooling (usually a blower forcing air through it) and the cables need to be thicker.
If you have mostly flat land where you live, and an easy-going driving style, a 300A controller would be fine.
Once you are up to speed, you'll probably draw less than 200 amps cruising on flat land.
Definitely install a good ammeter and keep an eye on your motor amps. You might want to avoid several-mile uphill climbs and similar situations that will draw a lot of amps for extended amounts of time. If you draw 500A for more than about 2 minutes at a time, it's very likely that stuff will start burning up. If you anticipate a lot of hill climbs, you should have a blower forcing air through the motor, and a good heatsink/fan combo for the controller as well.

A 48v controller is appropriate for your system. The engineers at Curtis know that a fully charged 48v pack is more than 48v and they have built in the appropriate tolerance for over-voltage. The controller also is capable of feeding more current to the motor than it draws from the batteries, so even if it's giving 400 amps to the motor, it will be pulling much less than that amount of current from the batteries. If you want to have the option to add more batteries and run a higher voltage system, you could get something like a Curtis 1209B or an Alltrax 7245... both of those are rated from 48v-72v so you can run it on 48v now, and add more batteries later if you want to have a higher top speed. Those controllers are a lot more expensive than a regular 48v one, and also physically larger and heavier.

walmart razor pocket bike?

my 5 yr old nephews bday is coming up and i want to get him a really cool gift, and was wondering how fast it would acturally go with a 45 lb person - 150 lbs., still 15mph? and for taller ppl is it harder, or uncomfortable to drive? also after the 45min of riding does it just cut off, or just starts going slower?

Answer
electric pocket bikes or the dirt bike lookin gones also don't even last 45 min. more like 20-30 because it all depends on terrain and weight, it'll only go 15mph and with a heavier person it'll go slower, 150 pound rider would make it go slower about 10mph, it's an electric motor it's not going to be the best for anything, the batterys take forever to charge also, it'll be a cool gift but they'll hate that they only get to ride it a short while.

Difference between regular bike and electric bike?

Cassandra

Also I wanna buy like the cruiser one. Is it okay for a 17 year old girl?

Answer
An electric bicycle is basically a smaller scooter its a regular bike with an small engine to assist riders but its a lot heavier than regular bicycles . Your not going to notice the weight while riding because the motor is doing most the work for you if you want the exercise factor get a road/hybrid bicycle or a thinned tires on a MTB shall do it .

It will be cheaper in the long run

know any Electric Bicycle kits from ebay can go at least 20mph?

Maverick

sellers are giving me strange details like 200rpm or 50kpm and I'm pretty sure the rpm was counted with out weight. Also what do you think would be the best battery?

Answer
Your speed on level ground with no pedaling will vary. If you have more than 750 watts power or go over 20mph then the bike is not an electric assist bicycle, but rather legally considered a motorcycle.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electric_bicycle_laws

The best battery is Lithium Iron Phosphate, but those will cost as much as the whole bike. The standard ebike comes with a sealed lead acid battery.

http://www.walmart.com/ip/eZip-Trailz-Electric-Bicycle/11988713

Is about $500 shipped to a store you choose for pickup. That is usually less exensive than doing a conversion yourself. The price for this bike has gone up a lot. I paid $375 for it 2 years ago.

kx250f or 2012 sxf250? opinions please?

I'm 19, 5'5 , 140lbs and im looking for a next dirtbike for trail riding but have troubles if i dump the bike getting on and starting it because of seat hight. its very fustrating. The bikes i have ridden are 1st-1982 mx175, 2nd- 2002 yz125, 3rd-2008 crf150rb, 4th- 2007 kx100. experienced seat hight trouble with yz 125 (seat hight-39in)
kx250f seat hight 37in and have considered shaving seat and lowering by forks but the new 2012 ktm sxf250 has electric start which would make things much easyer but seat hight is 39in as well. Not sure what too do or what would be the reasonable choice.

Answer
If your wanting to save some money and your stuck between the 2 id say the kawi. ktm's are the most spendy for sure (KTM = Kost Too Much.) Although I love mine but i ride woods and nothing else really. They do make a great bike but you'll be spending more... I'd also look into the CRF's if I were you. I had a CRF250f and LOVED it. As for the height problem.... You'll get more comfortable the more you ride and theres ways of lowering your rear shock and front forks but its kinda spendy. You could also cut some seat foam but i personally prefer a nice seat and not hard plastic.

Which yamaha dual sport bike is better?

Vertigo

I was looking the 2011 WR250X, the 2011 WR250R and the 2012 TW200. I prefer the TW2000 cause is cheaper and dont know it looks nice. But i will like to know the pros and cons of each one, nore concentrated in the TW200. Thanks

Answer
Rule out the wr250x as its street tires will not be good off road.

The wr250r is a dual sport, powerful for a 250 and tall, so you will want to sit on one and see if it fits. While it won't be too comfortable on a highway it is fast enough for one. It would be a good off road bike based on the power and tires.

The TW200 has been sold for years so its easy to find one used, though I think very early models had kick starting only, so check the one you are looking at has electric start. It will be about half the price of the 250, less if you are buying used. Its 200cc engine is not very powerful, so it will not be fast enough for highway driving (top speed is around 60mph). It will be ok on easy trails, but a bit underpowered on anything with steep hills. If it doesn't matter to you about the higher speed and power of the 250, or the 250 is too tall, then I think the TW200 would be a good in town and trail bike, and fine for country riding, and will get really good gas mileage.

how do i get electric bike to spin the chain?

csmuch41

i wanted to make an electric bike but i dont know how to make the chain spin... how does it work?

does electricity and battery make it spin or what how does this all work?

Answer
You are right. An electric motor and battery are what is needed.

But most electric motors are either direct drive in the rear hub OR there is a roller that drives the front wheel directly. With your level of expertise I'd recommend getting a kit. Australia do some good ones.

a standalone modular low cost electric motor set for existing bicycles?

thehighlan

I am from India ..and we sell abt 10 Million Bicycles in India every year

I am looking for a low cost modular motor kit..which can be charged by simply plugging in to the AC mains..and can be attached to our bicycles by simple tools..nothing too complicated is gonna work here

i searched online and found one or two products..but they were prohibitively expensive

is there ne one out there who can help me

thanx in advance

Answer
There are a wide variety of electric bike kits available. Most include hub motors which are pre-installed on a rear or front wheel. You simply install the wheel, run the wiring along the bike to a controller and battery, and you're all set. Here are a few of the different options available:

http://www.eco-wheelz.com/catalog/electric-bike-kits-c-1_11.php

On average, you can expect to pay between $300-$400 for an electric bike kit (without battery). Then batteries will vary depending on the battery type, but can cost from $125 -$500+

Solar Panel wattage for my Electric Bike?

www.jkrish

I am looking to purchase an Electric Bike for transport to work. I work on an Organic farm and need to save some energy up those hills.

I need help figuring out what size solar panels would be needed to charge the battery, and whether its plausible.

I'm looking at Ebay in Australia as I am immigrating down there. I prefer to afford the foldable/portable solar panel system: 80 watt, 120 watt, 160 watt, but IF necessary a bit more.

300w 3 PHASE 36v ELECTRIC REAR WHEEL
THREE 12v 17ah SLA BATTERIES (Total 36v)

or

Motor: 250 Watt brush-less DC hub
Batteries: 24V/10Ah pack, valve regulated

can anyone out there help explain to me how to figure this out?

thanks :)

Answer
You will want to have some sort of voltage regulation.
If the panel voltage drops off you don't want to discharge the batteries on your bike.
And you would not want to overcharge your batteries.

Harbor Freight has a fold out 18 to 24 vdc solar recharger.(see link)

For a work/home commute you might not want to haul the charger around everyday.
Ask the folks at the farm if you could set up a solar charging station. They might even help.
I'd suggest a bicycle locker that has the panel on top and a couple spaces for bicycles with charging stations inside, out of the elements. Your employers may like the idea.

Electric Bikes: Car replacements? Yes/No?

northernwi

The higher end electric bikes get like 40 (perhaps more) miles with assistance. I figure, if you carry two of those (maybe one in the backpack), theres really nowhere the *average* person goes on a regular basis that wouldnt fall within an 80 mile round trip. Hills are way easier, and you wont get sweaty (if you get sweaty on a normal bike commute, that is)

There are things cars are very good at, transporting big items or multiple people, but for every day - mundane situations, do you think electric bikes could be a good alternative for most people who arent morbidly obese?

I personally think so! Its also a very green way to go about things.

Answer
Absolutely! Electric bikes are a great alternative to cars for people who wouldn't ordinarily ride a bicycle. They could replace a great deal of car traffic. A bike trailer or cargo bike/trike configuration helps address cargo needs.

This is a dealer of electric bikes and vehicles near me...have a look to see what types of products are currently available and how they could be improved:

convert my motorcycle to electric power?

fishrcutba

I would like to put a rechargeable electric motor on one of my motorcycles. "Becoming more Green", How do I convert a 7000 lb 110 electric boat wench to accomplish this task? The bike is an 1980 Suzuki GS 1000 L.

Answer
Great Idea! I am doing something similar right now, only smaller and less expensive.

First: Have $5,000 for the conversion.

Now find a motor:
Check this out on Ebay:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Scooter-Kart-Boat-Bike-ev-electric-motor-36v-DC-PM-new_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQ_trksidZp1742Q2em153Q2el1262QQcategoryZ84149QQihZ004QQitemZ140274181592
That's $300 for 3HP...

http://www.robotmarketplace.com/products/EMS-PMG132.html
That's $1000 for 34HP...

Then you need a controller. Lets assume you need the 34 HP brushless motor.
http://www.kellycontroller.com/shop/?mod=product&cat_id=26,15&product_id=432
That's $1300 for a controller that will handle your motor.

Then you need 72V of batteries. I would recommend using either Lithium Polymer or Nickel Metal Hydride.

The Lithium cells I reccomend are:
http://www.all-battery.com/37volt-10000mah5cli-polycell-1.aspx
These are $35 each at 3.7V and 10Ah. You need 72V so that would be 20 cells for 74V and 10Ah.

But you need more capacity than 10Ah. That would only get you maybe 10 miles. In order to have a 100 mile range you would need more like 200 cells, which would be $7000 for 74V ans 100Ah (all-battery.com will give you a huge discount for an order like that if you call sales).

Here is a NiMH alternative:
http://www.all-battery.com/25pcsfsize12v14000mahnimhrechargeablebattery.aspx
For a battery comparable to the 100 mile range Lithium one above, it would be about for 450 F size batteries. $5563 These weigh a lot more.

Then you need a charger. Good luck.

I bought a Hyperion DUO smart charger for my 12 cell LiPoly pack for a scooter but if you have 200 cells you can't just buy 17 Hyperion chargers (they are $230 each and each require at least a $100 DC power source).

So it's going to be expensive and possibly very educational.

good price range for this bike?

mojo

what would be a good price range for a 1999 yamaha ttr250 dirt bike? it is in very good condition, has a headlight and taillight, electric start, key, and always starts right up.

Answer
A brand new 2009 Yamaha TTR250 is selling for $2499
a fair price range for a 1999 would be between $1000 to $1200

also used dirt bikes are way down in price, dealers don't want them on trade in, the sales of used dirt bikes are so down that many dealers are stripping them down and selling them for parts.

Fat People & Electric Wheelchairs?!?

Girly

Ok...
Now I understand that some people are overweight and even obese for medical conditions... But today while I was at the beach I saw this fat lady she must have been pushing 350, going towards the boardwalk... when she tried to go up the ramp her little motor couldn't take it and stopped. So she hopped off the Jazzy and pushed it up the ramp.. now this ramp is pretty steep, and I have trouble riding a bike up it. Then she she reached the top of it she plopped her fat @$$ back into the seat and went over to the Boardwalk Fries, ordered a large, then proceded to eat them as she cruised down the boards... now the question is... if she could walk that thing up a huge ramp with no problems.. why can't she just stop being lazy and walk like a normal person??
Look i'm not trying to offend people and I even said that I understand that sometimes people are obese becase of medical conditions... but this chick was just plain fat, and since she rode her way right over to the french fries (and not just any fries, the biggest size they had!), she obviously has no inclination to help herself. And I'm sure us taxpayers paid for that Jazzy, when really it would do her more good if we paid for a muzzle and a gym membership.

can u say breifly why do you like it?
guys which kind of bike(motor) advertisement u like . And tell me why do u lke it. and do u like stunt kind of advertisement or the advertisement which will show that to attract girls????

Answer
You've left an open ended question. Do you mean motorcycles or bicycles? Do you mean television ads, radio ads, or print ads?
I build custom bicycles and electric mopeds, so I like *free* ads. My daughter designed a fiberglass ladies bicycle, and it was the number one Google result for "ladies bicycle" for over a year. I'm very happy with that because it was free advertizing. Here is a picture of the bike she designed:
http://i134.photobucket.com/albums/q119/hotbike/Type9Pink2.jpg
Here is a picture of her and her friend riding my earlier creation, the first electric moped in America:
http://i134.photobucket.com/albums/q119/hotbike/Type5withPassenger.jpg
So I ask another question; do you like ads with just a picture of the bike, or with somebody riding the bike?
I would rather see somebody riding the bike. Some bikes are artistic creations and people find it hard to believe that anyone can ride it.
I would like to take this opportunity to say that there are too many car advertismements. Bike dealers should get "equal time". They say that six thousand dollars from the sale of every new car goes to TV ads. It's unfair to the bike industry , because bikes don't cost that much.
I like all kinds of bike advertisements, and I want to see more of them.

Product Description
For aspiring little Grand Prix champs, this mini motorbike - complete with cool racing decals and realistic sounds - is the most excitement this side of the checkered flag!

My boys ages 2 and 4 love this bike! My two year old hadn't gotten the concept of steering in 1 year of owning his tricycle but in a few minutes on a motorized bike he figured it out after running into enough walls. Originally I purchased this bike for my older son only and got my 2 year old a three wheel smaller version from another company that was supposed to go the same speed...it didn't. My older son was running 3 laps around my younger son litterally as they rode around the house. I didn't think that my younger son would be able to handle the bigger bike but to our surprise when my oldest turned his back he jumped on his bike and took off!...so we sent his bike back and ordered him the mini motorcross as well. I like that they have to master coordinating their feet and steering and the switch of forward and reverse...very user friendly for the kids.

Questions about electric bike?

JK

Hi, I just got this electric bike second hand on craigslist - and it's working fine, but I have a few questions about it.

1. Do you remove batteries when you have the bike on the public bike rack to prevent theft? Or do you think that the lock mechanism is good enough to deter the theft? Of course I put U-shape lock on the bike body itself, but I wasn't sure what to do with the battery. It's removable, so for today, (first time out), I removed the battery and brought it with me to the office.

2. how long does this battery last? The previous owner told me she used the bike for two years. How do you know the battery is no good any more? She used it to climb up a hill (gradual, a short steep part, but not so terrible) daily about 1.5 miles. When should I consider getting new battery pack (and how much does it cost?)

3. Is there way to adjust the positioning of the switch to turn the power on because it's in a little awkward place to reach as of right now. (I like to turn it on and off to save battery as I climb up the hill).

Thanks!
to the first responder: I live in upstate NY and the town is full of hills. I dare you to climb the two large hills I just went down and climbed this morning. I'm a middle aged woman with shaky knees and I'm not going to put up with your nonsense. Perhaps you should think about what you say before you post it - and save some embarrassment. You won't dare say that to me in person.

to the second person: I want to turn it on and off because, if you've ever rode bike on a long hill, the incline is not even. Some parts are almost level, and I don't need the assist, but some other parts are steep, then I need assist.
And please only answer if you actually know anything about electric bike.
Also, this is the bike I got: http://www.giant-bicycles.com/en-us/bikes/model/twist.express/7335/44074/ I forgot to add this link in the initial post.

Answer
I would remove the battery. The battery life is determined by the type and the number of recharge cycles. If you turn it off to climb hills why bother with an electric bike. There is a good chance that you already need a new battery. The cost will depend on the type, Google is your friend.

Edit:
You replied without giving any more information about the bike. Most have a Controller that determines how much energy you use.

Looking for information on Voy electric bikes?

Karen J

Any info on parts, etc. would be appreciated.

Answer
I dunno if brand name is Voy, but here in Tucson there is "Ajo bikes" (a store) that carries an electric bicycle with the motor in the hub of the front wheel! a cable runs out from the axle, to the control in the handgrip, and to the battery on the rear luggage type rack.
I am thinking about buying just the front wheel assembly ($100 range) and install on my present bike.
I think the complete bike all set up is like $400 range.
1301 e ajo way, tucson, az. 85713
i hope its legal to give out their address.
Very trim design without all the gear clutter, but you can pedal the 10-speed (15? maybe) rear wheel.
i'd give you more info but this question closes in a few hours.

One of the founders posted on the electric motorcycle forum that they are looking for a strong US distributor because the business is tough to manage from Europe. You might want to post a reply and ask for an update. He should get a notification email that the thread has been updated.

Dealers/Retailers of Electric Bikes and Scooters

Here's a partial list of retailers/dealers/resellers in the United States by telephone area code. Or use your web browser's Edit:Search function to find a city or state. Many of these retailers also offer repair services - even on brands they don't sell. We also list a few dealers in Canada, Australia, and Europe. For a more extensive list of electric bike businesses in the world, click here (http://energy.sourceguides.com/businesses/byP/ev/eBike/byGeo/byC/byC.shtml).

If you don't find a nearby dealer on this list, check with the manufacturer for the address of a retailer near you. Some manufacturers offer a "dealer locator" online. Also, here are two others sources of retailer listings:
