Help with moving to the UK?

SomethingL

I am considering moving to the UK in a couple of years and was wondering what the living costs would be. I don't want to move to London because it's one of the most expensive cities to live in and was wondering what the cost of living would be in like Manchester, Leeds, Newcastle, Nottingham, Bristol or more if you can give some. Here are somethings I was wondering if you could help me.

> accommodation prices (how much does it cost to rent or to buy an accommodation in England?)

> public transportation fares (tube, bus etc ...)

> food prices(per month, how much does it cost you?)

> health prices (for those who need medical insurance)

> eduction prices (if you need to pay)

> energy prices (oil, electricity)

> common bills (Internet, television, telephone, mobile phone)

> prices of a good menu in a traditional restaurant

> prices of a beer and or a coffee in a regular pub

> price of the cinema

Did I forget something or is this list complete enough?
I have a EU Passport. Would that make any difference?

Answer
Ever considered Brighton? That's a nice place. Leeds in nice and cheapish, I wouldn't suggest Manchester, but everywhere else you have listed are decent.

Accommodation? Well they range between £80 a week to £5,000,000 to buy, you didn't really give us much info on that did you?
Right, you are better off buying as house prices (where I am in Birmingham anyway) are dirt cheap. My 3 bedroom, terrest, urban, inner city (not a great area) house with a back garden and drive way on a road just off a main road with central heating is about £140,000ish.

Public transport - if you are not in London don't worry about the tube as there are no underground trains anywhere else.
Adult bus ticked is £1.90, child 85p one way - £3.60 for a day saver (adult)
Adult train ticket is about the same for a short hop (1-2 stops) rises in price after that.

Food - for me, my mom and step dad it's about up to £100 a week. It really depends on how you eat. The more raw food you buy and cook instead, the cheaper it will be. You could EASILY bring that price down. Especially if you buy in cheaper supermarkets like Morrison's, Lidl, Aldi, Farmfoods, Iceland, Asda etc. Avoid Waitrose, Sainsburies, Co Op (I work there, trust me), Tesco, and other places like that.

Health - medical insurance, you kidding me right? Google 'NHS'.

Education - same as above. The only education you pay for in Britain is Higher education like University (basically anything 19+)

Energy is the scary one. Fuel poverty is big in the UK. I don't own a house myself or pay bills (too young) but it isn't cheap. Seriously hunt around for good deal. Only turn on heating if it is snowing. Put jumpers, socks and blankest on instead. A gas hob is better, and an electric oven is better too. Petrol is SO expensive. My step dad spends £80 a week. Get public transport (buses are cheaper). Walk it or bike it.

Again common bills - I don't pay. However I do know that landlines are very expensive and not worth it. Just buy a mobile phone, and try the company 'giffgaff' they are VERY good. Get a package that suits you. My mobile bill is £20 a month I think. Also, with tv, you can avoid costly bills by just having freeview, which is one payment, and then similar channels to have Sky or Virgin.

I don't know what a 'traditional restaurant' is. We don't really have them...
Pub grub and chip shops are cheap though. And other restaurants (Indians, Italians) vary in price.

A pint in the UK is on average £3-£4ish. Again varies.

Cinema is SO expensive - tickets are around £8 now, more for 3D etc. Pop corn is £5, drinks the same - illegally download them like the rest of the world and get a £1 bag of pop corn from pound land like normal people :)

Like others have said, make sure you are qualified and legally allowed to live and work in the UK. Immigration is tough here. A EU passport WILL make a lot of difference, but I think you will still need a visa...

Where can I buy a bike-powered generator?

I'm looking for either one of the following 2 things:

1. A bicycle light that is powered by the wheel but has a battery that kicks in if you're going too slow for the light to be bright.
-OR-
2. A bicycle generator that can store the generated electricity in a battery that can then be used to power a light.

Thanks.

Answer
Generators disappeared from bikes once batteries were commonplace. Now, with LED lights, a couple batteries will last 1500 hours. In any case, here you have a few.

How can i power a kettle with a bicycle?

Q. So I'm in college in Ireland and we're running a green week very soon and for fun I want to see if i could run a few electrical devices with the power of cycling. Anyone any ideas on how I could get my hands on the equipment to do that?

Answer
You really have two choices the '12 volt route' or the '240 volt route'.

There are small kettles that run on 12v that plug into a car lighter socket - so you could charge the car battery from an old bike dynamo and run the 12v kettle from that (by propping up the back of the bike so its off the ground, or (even using a smaller sealed gel battery that could be put into e.g a saddlebag).

To use a mains 240v kettle is more tricky- but possible, here you will need a substantial car battery ( charged from the bike - maybe get hold of an old car alternator and run a pully system off the back wheel? ) and an inverter that will cope with the wattage of the kettle, most modern kettles are very high wattage but you can get 1,000 watt versions. The problem is that a 1000 watt inverter can be expensive, probably around £70 but check ebay?

These are only ideas, don't do it or mess with mains voltages if you don't know exactly what your are doing and can do it safely, better still take the advice of qualified electrician!

All the kit needed can be found on ebay

best bikes for electric conversion image

Dylan R

The bike may need a little work but I was wondering if this bike would be suitable for commuting and touring. I am planning on using this bike for commuting to work and then this summer to do a little tour. After this tour I may also try doing the electric conversion, but my question is if this bike is suitable for commuting to work and for touring.

Thanks, for any answers, insight, or suggestions that you can give me.

Answer
It is capable of commuting and touring. "Suitable" depends on whether or not if the particular bike is reliable. You says it needs a little work -- cosmetics? Or it is something that will strand you 50 miles in the middle of nowhere?

how do I build an electric motor for my bike?

Cookie

I want to make my bike electric, how can I do that? Sites would be great, pictures would also be awesome. Anything helps! Thanks!

Answer
I would suggest the excellent engineering text on the subject:
Electric Bicycles, A Guide to Design and Use - Morchin & Oman 2006

It covers the trade-offs between brush and brushless motors and has good graphs for determining the torque-speed characteristic based on the output of the motor.

Best conversion is probably to just buy a good hub motor from a place like ebikes and then consider how you will power it and if you want only an assist when pedaling or an all-electric option. If you have access to a simulation program like PSIM Simulation for power electronics and motor control that can take a lot of guess work out of the various non-linearities involved with the contol of motors especially if you are going to design your own electronics and do your own boards.

What kind of motorbike should I get?

I'm 14, about 1.68m and 65kgs. I want to get a dirt bike to learn to ride on, and to ride around my farm. I was thinking something like a Honda CRF 230F, or something like that. I have never ridden before, but I'm a fast learner, and am pretty good at driving quad bikes. Also, if it matters at all, I'm a girl.
Please help?

Answer
You could go for a 230... They are big bikes though and have a lot of bottom end power.. but not much top end... great if you want to slowly power up a steep hill.. not so good if you want a bit more speed and power at the top end.. I personally would get like a Suzuki RM 125... they are light, fast, ALOT of power.. especially at top end.. cheaper, easy and cheaper to fix... the 230 is big and heavy.. the upsides of it are electric start and you are less likely to flip it on a steep hill... but for fun (disregarding safety) id go for a light two stroke machine :)... You will probably flip the 125 up a steep hill though.. especially at first.. but yeah.. its alot cheaper and easy to fix.. lighter as well.. just be sure to get the fuel to two stroke oil mix correct and dont use a cheap oil.. it will wear out your piston rings... To be honest ive ridden plenty 230's... i got board real quick.. but if you dont mind a bit less speed and adrenaline.. go for it :) hope i helped.

im looking to get a new 250 dirt bike and i want to know when the 2013s come out. I am looking at honda, kawasaki, suzuki, ktm, yamaha...all the major brands.

Answer
All the bikes come out the same time, around the end of 2012. All the bikes are very similar, you're going to have to ride each of the bikes to find your preference.

KTM is way too much money, currency between Austria and the US isn't good. Yamaha is too advanced, their 2013 models are going to look like a futuristic robot, and it might even have electric start, which adds around 20 lbs.

Kawasaki is great as the 2012 model almost dominates the other bikes. I prefer the Suzuki, but it's all rider preference. Suzuki isn't over designed, it's the best bike in my opinion. Next years bikes could go from $8,000, but the KTMs... (Keep Throwing Money). Could go up to $10,000.

looking at the smoky mountains/ Gatlinburg area. tent camping, but with electric hook ups and bath houses with showers.. in the mountains, near water. anyone familiar with camping in this area with a nice campground to recommend would be a great help!! thank you :)

Answer
Cades Cove combines the feel of primitive camping with the modern convenience of flush toilets, drinking water and electric hook-ups. A camp store provides visitors with basic necessities as well as bike rentals.

The Great Smoky Mountains are a hikers paradise and visitors to Cades Cove Campground love the 5-mile roundtrip hike to Abram Falls. From Cades Cove Loop Road, follow the signage at the turnoff for directions to the trailhead.

Although Abrams Falls is only 20 feet high, the large volume of water rushing over falls more than makes up for its lack of height. The long, deep pool at its base is very picturesque. The trail to the falls traverses pine-oak forest on the ridges and hemlock and rhododendron forest along the creek. The waterfall and creek are named for Cherokee Chief Abram or Abraham whose village once stood several miles downstream.

A nearby horse stable provides one-hour horseback rides as well as hay rides and carriage rides from March through October, offering recreational activities for the entire family.

Campers can also enjoy high-quality backcountry fishing in the cool waters of the countless streams and rivers that snake through the mountains, with trout available in abundance.

China (PRC)’s falling economy, what would happen next?

Studying the history of Chinese dynasties, according to an academian, there are always 8 step transition as below.
1. Establish a new dynasty
2. Purge followers
3. Conduct wars of aggression
4. Modify Chinese characters and fabricate the history
5. Surroundings and bureaucrats become corrupt
6. Arise many secret societies and farmer riots
7. Military clique intrude to the capital
8. Return to 1

As they have constructed a huge number of ghost towns, local governments and PLAs could not have earned cash flow, however they have to make interest payments, they put varnish on the export amount in order to get fake funds. This is the reason why the export amount to HK and Taiwan shows exponential increase even though the import amount of HK and Taiwan from China are decreasing.
To make out with rollover, inter-bankâs short-term interest rate âovernight rateâ once spiked up to 13.4% temporarily. It was really crazy.

Chinese local government and PLAs have to dress up their balance sheet, hence they produce high yield âwealth management productâ via èè³å¹³å°( finance platform) equivalent term for shadow bank, that could change the fake bond to real money for them, however the people who bought those products would drop their money. No one could forecast the total amount of those uncollectible loans. But it is estimated 1.55 trillion US Dollar minimum to 3.2 trillion US Dollar, those figure exceeds Chinaâs foreign currency holdings. CCP, at last, decided to hide the economic figures such as amount of steel deals, electric consumption amount and so onâ¦
CCP also forced Chinese medium not to report about the fund shortage which cause of rising interest ratesâ¦

Paul Krugman mentioned in a commentary article in the New York Times, âChinaâs low-consumption, high-investment economy is a kind of Ponzi scheme. Chinaâs economy as working like a bicycle, it falls over if it stops moving forward. Right now, Chinaâs Ponzi bicycle is running into a brick wallâ.

Since Chinese Yuan holds dollar peg system, Quantitative Easing of FRB is a must for CCP, because they could print Yuan only keeping pace with FRBâs QE in order to increase money supply to the market, that the reason why CCP begged US like a dog not to stop their QE at Moscow G20 in July. But this might cause a dramatic inflation, people would suffer from it.
On the other hand, if CCP decrease money supply to avoid intensive inflation, a lot of big companies might be bankrupted.
What do you think?
@Mr. Liu -- Thank you for your great answer, especially in the problem of unemployment. Do you have any trusted figures of unemployment rate? I hardly saw it in the news. @eiji -- No, "what happen to china right now" derive from China's internal plobrems, not (or small) from "external factor".
You must reap what you have sown.
But I doubt you actually understand Chinese situation well.

Answer
Yes you are right, the inflation rate and the rampant corruption in China creating so many problems in China right now. CCP has been so long launching the unfair trading policy which makes China suffer its own consequence. China has to suffer the consequence of its own mistake for not playing fair trade like the rest of the world does. Overproducing and dumping policy of China contributes to the trading deficit of China. As the result of trading deficit, China cannot sustain its economy anymore and economy of China will be collapse.

You forgot to mention that the CCP keeps over printing the Yuan which contributes to China's economic down fall, here is the prove:
http://www.nytimes.com/2011/01/12/business/global/12yuan.html?_r=0

And not even to mention that China lost its jobs to the other countries like Vietnam, Bangladesh, Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia, etc. due to the inflation and the labor wage increasement. As the result, the unemployment rate in China is staggering and many Chinese lost their jobs. More and more Chinese cannot find jobs because of the inflation rate, especially the poor migrant workers.

Property and housing bubble are also become problem due to the inflation, more and more Chinese cannot buy house and buy properties. As the result, more and more Chinese are homeless because they don't have enough money for buying house. More and more Chinese are getting poorer because they don't have enough money to buy the property.

Then, the gap between rich and poor in China is getting wider. Rich people getting richer, and the rich ones are going to the overseas to escape the madness in China. While the poor ones are still very poor, they suffer too much while they never get any care from the CCP. The poor ones are the ones who affected the most by the madness going own in China, poor people in China are treated unfairly by the CCP. The CCP only favor the rich ones while ignore the poor ones, poor people are often become the victim of CCP.

You can check the real figure of China unemployment rate here:

What are my best options for alternative energy?

Mitch

I'm looking to make it though a Canadian winter without paying my electric bill.
I only need to be able to power a laptop, my phone, and a lamp.
I'm looking for options under $200.
I've already thought about making a bike powered generator, and I'm also looking into the cost of a thermoelectric generator that runs off wood, but I'm still not sure what the best option might be...
Does anyone have any cheap but effective suggestions?

Answer
Well, under 200 dollars probably won't happen, sorry.

You can get a 600 watt wind turbine for under 500 dollars, but you'll also need some batteries, and the rest of the kit.

And in Canada, I'd worry about heat too.

I suppose if that's not an issue, you could rig up a mechanical generator from scratch, but that will take a fair bit of effort, and you'd probably want batteries to go with it.

How are you going to cope with higher fuel costs?

iamacarguy

I am looking into converting a car to electric, probably an electric car with an onboard alternator. I have taken steps to increase my fuel economy ie my driving habits, organizing my trips for running errands, making sure I have the correct air pressure (on the high end) in the tires, etc.

What are you doing?

Answer
To the first poster... It is cheaper to charge an electric car (both for you the consumer, and less pollution overall to generate the electricity). The cost of gasoline is more expensive compared to your electric bill to charge a car!!!

An electric car would be nice. An electric motorcycle would be even better (other than it would be heavy). A cruiser style would work well because they usually have a lower center of gravity by design.

What I'm doing...
All vehicle tires are pumped to max pressure (watching for tire wear issues, balding in the center).
Watch air filters closely.
Park in parking spots where I can pull through (so that I do not have to back out of the spot, less movement and idle time).
Slower cruising speeds. Running 80 consistantly in my truck I get 17-18. 75 = 18-19. Just did a 270mi trip runnin 70 and I got 21.5mpg. It will pay for itself over time, plus in the distance I drove, it cost me about 35min in travel time, but I had the time to spare...
i've been riding my motorcycle a lot when weather permits. I altered the final drive ratio by changing the sproket sizes (chain drive) and was able to gain 6mpg on my bike!

How do I make a motor for a electric bike what pieces do I need ?

Answer
To make a high-quality one that can go fairly fast, you probably couldn't.

On the other hand, if you don't want to go above 15-20mph, you could probably make one for under $100. Buy a cheap broken electric scooter. Chances are the motor on it still works and you can use that. Those motors can get you going close to 20mph with the right gear ratios.

A motor controller could also be obtained from a scooter, or, if the motor you are using is not significantly powerful (<36v), you could probably buy a brand new controller for fairly cheap.

Batteries may cost a little more, but you could get sealed lead acid batteries for under $100 for sure.

Plus, their are the little things like the throttle, which is generally a potentiometer. These can be very cheap on Ebay.

Q. I want to convert my current bike to an electric bike for less than $200. I'm really not that handy with electronics, but if some instruction to put A into B I can do it, I just wouldn't be able to figure out that A goes into B with out the instructions. Anyways, does anyone have some tips? All the sites that I've found are very unprofessional or non-specific so it's really hard to figure out anything from them. I would be willing to buy a kit.

Answer
An electric bike has to have a motor, controller, throttle, and battery pack.
Hub motors are the easiest to install.
overview:
You remove your old front wheel, put the new wheel where the old one was, align the wheel in the slots, adjust the brakes, secure the controller and the battery pack on the rear rack, put the throttle on the handle bars, route the wires safely and tie-wrap, connect the connectors together, turn every thing on and test.

To be of much use, you have to have at least 250watts, and hopefully more.

Largo scooters has a decent kit (go Hub)for $600 and is nice. Every once in a while you can find a WE or BD36 for maybe $350.

A Largo kit has keyed connectors so you cannot hook it up wrong.

Answer
"Best" ? As an industry adviser, I hear this question all the time.

what is really important is what is best for your needs; some folks need mammoth hill climbing, others need great range, others want light weight.

The Ezee brand ebikes, and Bionx are pretty darn good.

I zip/schwinn is having warranty problems.

Giant if you need great range and nationwide service.

Be careful with crystalyte in the rain unless you get the go hub.

Make SURE that diagrams, skilled repair people, parts and a warranty are available.

many folks are disappointed that there is no service and their $1200 investment is useless after the first minor problems.

Can the pedaling energy charge the battery of an electric bike?

Drowzzy

Can the mechanical energy of pedaling be stored as electrical energy to be utilized later to run the bicycle automatically? I'm not talking about pure electric bikes that need regular charging, and not even about those that you pedal for a while as the bike stands still and then run it on electric power. I mean can you ride a bike and store the mechanical energy simultaneously? Will it be efficient? If so, then are such e-bikes available in the market, and what are they called so that I may Google for them?

Here's the scenario: I need a bicycle for regular commute, may be even for covering long distances. It's not feasible for a layman to pedal continuously for more than 5 to 10 miles. So I'm looking for a bike that you pedal for sometime, and when you're exhausted, you simply flick a button to make it run on electrical power which has been converted and stored from the mechanical energy of pedaling the bike; and then pedal again and auto-ride again and so forth. Will something like that be technically efficient, since you're moving the bike while pedaling as well as storing your spare energy?

Hope I haven't confused you. Thanks :)

Answer
There is already such a motor on the market. The name escapes me right now but it is a hub built into the rear wheel and it costs about $2000... not the Erbike hub motor... I think it is Electricrider or something like that.

To your request, yes, it is possible and a project I am working on right now. No, I can't and won't divulge details but CAN tell you that you'll see it relatively soon and it WILL be expensive- more expensive than a small motorcycle at this point.

By the way... I typically commute 24 miles (one way) to work on a bicycle, no problem. 5-10 mile commute is simple for most committed riders.

We are living in strange times. One exceptionally warm winter is enough--irrespective of the fact that in the course of the twentieth century the global temperature increased only by 0.6 percent--for the environmentalists and their followers to suggest radical measures to do something about the weather, and to do it right now.

Rational and freedom-loving people have to respond. The dictates of political correctness are strict and only one permitted truth, not for the first time in human history, is imposed on us. Everything else is denounced.

NewsAccording to the new data published by NASA, 1998 is no longer the hottest year ever. 1934 is.

Four of the top 10 years of US CONUS high temperature deviations are now from the 1930s: 1934, 1931, 1938 and 1939, while only 3 of the top 10 are from the last 10 years (1998, 2006, 1999). Several years (2000, 2002, 2003, 2004) fell well down the leaderboard, behind even 1900. (World rankings of temperature are calculated separately.)

what is the Future for motorcycles that haven't changed in style for years and same style motors?

stardancer

China makes a 3 wheel car that seats 4 and is a 4 door.India makes ans Selle's 3 wheel cars
that gets over 50 miles Gal.

Answer
Given that the internal combustion engine is so inefficient, even the most efficient lose more energy in radiation (heat) than they transfer to the back wheel, I think the next major step will be in electric motors with the advent of light(er)weight batteries. Of course these are not necessarily more environmentally friendly â creating the electricity creates greenhouse gases, even manufacturing the batteries is a dirty industry â but they have instant huge torque, have few moving parts, are reliable and simple, and can use forward movement and braking to claw back some charge. Would increasing the number of wheels or seats improve motorcycles? In many cases the compromise will enlarge the bike so much that it loses many of its advantages especially in towns.

Has anyone ridden the E-Zip Comfort Electric Bicycle?

best electric bicycle review image

SILVRSWT

I am looking for anyone who has ridden this bike and can comment on it's ability to climb hills, the difficulty of pedaling with the extra payload, etc.

I saw it while shopping for a new bike for moving around a busy college campus with lots of hills;

http://www.walmart.com/search/search-ng.do?search_constraint=0&search_query=e-zip&Continue.x=0&Continue.y=0&Continue=Find&ic=24_0

Answer
I recently bought the other bike on that page - the E-Zip Mountain Trailz bike. The two are almost identical. I wrote a pretty thorough review of it here on Amazon:

http://www.amazon.com/E%252dZip-Mountain-Trailz-Electric-Bicycle/dp/B000MSDKOI/ref=pd_bbs_1/104-0603160-1961532?ie=UTF8&s=sporting-goods&qid=1188436525&sr=8-1

Basically it makes going up hills much easier, as long as you're not going too far (because that will drain the battery pretty quickly). It's pretty hard to pedal with a dead battery because of the extra weight. Read my review for further details.

Need advice on these electric scooters?

lil miss

The description from the guys selling them was that they were Phanthom IV and Sola models but I can't find a review online anywhere. He wants $400 dollars for both of them... we live about three 4-5 miles from work and we just want a way to commute back and forth in a cheap way. Are these good?

http://s307.photobucket.com/albums/nn292/mrs_strawn/?action=view&current=small_1927961214682457.jpg

Answer
Well the price is certainly good. As grizz mentioned the problem will be getting a replacement battery for the Phantom IV. The Sola shouldn't be a problem.

http://www.batteriesplus.com/products/78-0/6111-Scooter-Batteries--Electric/253517-Sola-Scooters/Night-Rider/1.aspx

Bear in mind that both of these scooters have a top speed of about 15 mph, so they're not exactly speedy. That's about as fast as you can go on a decent bicycle.

But again, the price is really good. The only issue is that the batteries will eventually need replacing, and you're probably up a creek when the Phantom battery dies. A bicycle or even electric bicycle wouldn't be a bad option either.

Things that Denmark has contributed with:
- Carlsberg, the best beer in the entire world, the number one beer drinked by everybody even in the UK
- Lego, best entertainment in the world
- Best food in the world, lots of Danish restaurants even in the UK

Things that the UK has contributed with:
- Fat old men for thai women

I think Denmark wins, hands down.
Denmark is also more of a world power. Look at how much the elite soldiers of the kingdom of Denmark are contributing in Afghanistan while the British soldier do nothing. America knows that Denmark and Danish soldiers are amongst the best soldiers in the entire world.

What are some cities to avoid living California?

grr

I want to live in california and close to LA. I would be doing acting and modeling, I know LA is VERY expensive, but I am looking for something a little cheaper, preferrably a two bedroom for 1000-1400.

what are some cities I should avoid living in? I looked at hawthorne and Gardena, I dont want to live in the ghetto, I know its very dangerous.

Answer
I think for now, you should just avoid California, period.

Did you ever consider the fact that LA is not the cheapest place in the world?

Coastal California is the MOST COVETED area which means MORE $$$.

Affordability does not exist in Los Angeles. Starting prices begin at around $1000+/mo. and that's usually for a studio in a somewhat decent area. And those luxurious, modern looking condos you see in the movies and television programs are not common in a typical Los Angeles neighborhood. Common condos/apartments/studios in Los Angeles are old, ghetto-looking buildings, and those do not come cheap at all as mentioned above.

Jobs are also nonexistent at the moment. Unemployment rates have jumped to 13% so good luck finding a job. Even if you find a job, that job will barely pay the rent (or not even come close to paying the rent.)

Keep in mind you do NEED to buy groceries, hygiene products, clothes, gas, electric, water, insurance, car, etc. and none of that is going to be cheap neither. Also, you're going to need to save money for doctor visits and need to keep money in case something critical happens to you (you'll never know!)

Speaking of cars, you NEED a car in order to live in Los Angeles. The roads in Los Angeles are not bicycle friendly and things are not conveniently located, unfortunately. The insurance for the car is not going to be cheap since the rate in Los Angeles are high and the gas prices are going to make you want to move back to your hometown.

Also, keep in mind that there is NO SUCH THING as a "safe" place. You can live in a "safe" place and still have a looney neighbor that decided to get drunk and run over an innocent child playing outside with his car or a guy that has beef with another guy in your neighborhood and decides to pop a glock on his head.

And moving here to be an actor/actress is one sure way of saying, "You'll either be back home, in pornography, or dead on the streets in a few moths - to a year." There are literally MILLIONS of people who flock to Los Angeles for that dream and only less than 0.5% actually make it and only a small fraction of the millions that come actually have LOADS of experience.

Moving to Los Angeles is NOT going to increase your chances of becoming an actor/actress. All it means is that you live there. PERIOD. Take Fred as a perfect example. He's still currently living in Omaha, Nebraska and he's already got a contract with Nickelodeon.

Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake got contracts with Disney in the 90s and neither of them were living in California.

Usher started his career while living in Atlanta, GA.

Justin Bieber got launched in Canada.

Zac Efron already had his history and he was living in a small town of San Luis Obispo, CA then later in Arroyo Grande, CA (both are 200+ miles away from LA) while he was building up.

Also, major studios PREFER acting experience. If you have no experience, you can just forget about it. Those who have been acting since they were wearing diapers have a pretty slim chance, let alone those who now potty trained.

So please, spare us the details on how you want to live in Los Angeles, CA to become an actor/actress. The best way to do this is to get established at home and then when you get into bigger and better things, you can make the consideration of moving to Los Angeles.

Help me pick a motorcycle!?

best electric bikes for 2013 on Navigating the Greenway: 1,200-Mile Journey in an Electric Bicycle-Car
best electric bikes for 2013 image

Johnson

I am thinking about getting a motorcycle instead of a car for college. The university I am going to has a very large, closed in campus which isnt quite walkable, so I wanted to get a bike to get around quickly and efficiently, as well as go to the store for groceries (ill just get saddle bags, not a big deal). It will also be used to drive around a large city (Seattle), and taken on the I-5 highway occassionally, but not often. I dont need or want my bike to be very fast, just enough for the highway.

The Kawasaki Ninja 250 is a solid contender for me, mostly because of its price and positive reviews. I definitely want either a sport or naked bike, preferably under $3-4k, so it fits the bill. It isnt very fast either, which is frankly a plus for me. Is the Ninja a good bike for my uses? ie: every day use, commute, convenience in daily life, city riding.

The biggest concern for me is cost. I know the bike itself it cheap enough, but how about the insurance? What would I expect to pay with the good grades discount, being 18-19 years old, college student? Also on a family plan most likely, so some discounts can be expected there.

Thanks alot, I hope someone has some answers for me :)

Answer

Dirt bike question?!?

Amanda

I was wondering if anyone experienced in dirt bikes could help me out.

I am looking to buy a dirt bike but im not sure what one I should get.
I mostly want the back for track riding and not for trail riding. I am a female 5'1 and 100 pounds. I do not want to get a beginners bike but would rather have one I can keep for years to come. I do have a small amount of experience in riding. I was looking more towards a Yamaha but any brand could work.
I want a fast back with a good amount of power. Any help would be much appreciated.
Oh and im 19 almost 20 if that makes any difference.
What about something like a YZ 250F or YZ 250?? Not sure whats better though 2-stroke or 4.

Answer
The seat height on the YZ 125s and 250s will be too much for you. They are almost 40 inches. You will never be able to touch the ground. The ideal situation is sit on the seat and at least be able to touch your toes to the ground on both sides.

Check out the 2013 TTR125 LE 34" seat height, front disc brake, 4 stroke and electric start. Probably would work good for you.
