Electric bicycle motor kit?

Q. So since I bought this completely crappy bike that sort of broke as far as the gears go, I was thinking it'd be fun to put an electric motor on it. I can't find many though, and when I find a kit it's like $2000. Are there any decent conversion kits so it's like a moped or something for a decent price?

Answer
Even if you find an electric motor kit at a better price, it is unlikely to be cheap. But the problem with your cheap bike will remain. The bike will be just as difficult to push along for the electric motor as it is for you. Adding the weight of the electric motor kit to an already heavy bike is going to make for an inefficient combination that probably won't have very much range, and when the battery runs down you are still going to have to be able to pedal, so the gears will have to be repaired. If you want an electric bike, buy one, trying to convert a clunker is probably a waste of money.

Electric bicycle conversion kit vs electric bicycle?

PETER P

Considering purchasing an electric bike kit. My main objective is it must be inconspicuous(I don't think their legal in NY?) and be able to tackle a 3mile hill on a 10mile trip to where I could recharge it. I think the kit less conspisious with the battery pack consealed in a back pack over the rear fender or saddle bags?

Answer
Personally I don't care much for motorised bicycles unless dealing with disabilities. A fit rider can usually ride about as quickly and for longer distances.

A kit is usually a better option since the motor can be removed with reasonable ease. And you can still ride the bike with it off. There are many different types of kits. Friction drives. Hub motors and one's that utilise the drive chain.

The friction drives tend to wear out your tyres quickly. The hub motors are a bit expensive and do not run efficiently at all speeds. The drive chain type are quite efficient and work through your gears so are more flexible. These ones are claimed to be greater than 95% efficient.

I know of similar designs but I don't think they are available in the U.S.

Still they are better than a car.

Bicycle and Pedestrian laws in the State of New York

MOTORIZED BICYCLES
Section 2268. Motor-assisted vehicle. Notwithstanding any other provision of this chapter, a vehicle which is primarily designed to be propelled by human power shall not be entitled to registration as a limited use vehicle because of the addition of a motor. The commissioner shall determine whether any vehicle is primarily designed to be propelled by human power.

http://www.oginski-law.com/library/bicycle-and-pedestria.cfm

The commissioners discretion. Here is a proposed bill that seems to outline the guidelines .You would have to be unlucky to get booked if you follow these.

??????NOT PASSED YET ??????

Section 1 of the bill adds a new Section 102-c to the vehicle and traffic law, defining electric assisted bicycles as:

A bicycle with two or three wheels which has a saddle and fully operative pedals for human propulsion, and also has an electric motor.

However, the electric motor should not have a power output of more than one thousand watts, and should be incapable of propelling the device at a speed of more than twenty miles per hour on level ground. The electric motor should also be incapable of further increasing the speed of the device when human power alone is used to propel the device at or more than twenty miles per hour.

Section 2 adds an exception in section 125 of the vehicle and traffic law to the statutory definition of motor vehicle for electric assisted bicycles.

Section 3 adds a new section 1240 to the vehicle and traffic law, making the rules, regulations and provisions of the vehicle and traffic law applicable to bicycles applicable to electric assisted bicycles; makes the federal equipment and manufacturing requirements for bicycles or motor driven cycles applicable to electric assisted bicycles; and adds the following operational and safety requirements for electric assisted bicycles: electric motor disengagement criteria; all operators and passengers are required to wear bicycle helmets; and no-one under the age of 16 may operate or as a passenger on an electric assisted bicycle and establishes the civil fine and enforcement procedures for failure to wear a helmet.

Section 4 is the effective date.

Are there any electric vehicles that don't require a driver's license?

wayfarer4

My mother, who is legally blind, wants a vehicle that she can drive, but that doesn't qualify as an automobile. She also won't consider garden tractors, golf carts or something similar. We've seen several electric cars out, but they all qualify as automobiles. Any ideas?

Answer
Try a mobility scooter
http://www.mobility-direct.co.uk/mobilityscooters.html

Most places in the world they need to be registered, but is a concessional registration (virtually free). There is no licence required.

Depending on the degree of visual impairment, another option could be a motorised bicycle or trike.(upright or recumbent.) Examples here
http://www.electric-bikes.com/trikes/trikes.html#TerraTrike

These are capable of quite high speeds (particularly recumbents) , but can be ridden slowly, within her limits.

Commonly an electric motor and a speed restriction are required to ensure they are considered the same as a bicycle. You will need to check your traffic act to see what restrictions apply to you.

Anyone with experience with A2B Electric Bikes or others?

Q. Anyone have any experience with the A2B Electric Bikes?
http://www.ultramotor.com/us/product/

I'm thinking of getting one (or other brands if you have any other recommendations to look at) to ride to work, I'm about 12 miles from work and with some power-assist it would help be get there faster and not as sweaty as if I completely rode 12 miles on my mountain bike. (I've ridden to work before but my old house was 4 miles from work, now I'll be 12 miles away)

Not sure yet if I want the Hybrid or Metro model..

But in general, I'm wondering how these bikes are on ONLY peddle power? For example, say I want to mainly ride on my own peddle power and then use the electric motor once I get tired (either with or without peddling, although peddling shouldn't be too hard if power-assisted even if I'm tired)

I'm concerned with the bike being heavy (55 lbs or so I believe) how hard it is to peddle..

Anyone with experience on these or other electric bikes?

I have a motorcycle so I'm not looking for only a scooter.. I want the exercise but at the same time 12 miles is too much for me to only peddle to work, especially here in the heat of South Florida.

Thanks

Answer
I would ride the motorcycle to work and buy a nice road bike for the $2,300 that bike would cost you. You can travel at 15 mph very easily on a road bike, that's the max speed on the hybrid and you would have a $1,000 or so left over. If you want to get exercise do it after work when it won't hurt to sweat a little.

how to build a electric bike using my old MTB mountain bike ?

Michael

loading: 100 kgs, speed: 70kph, and want to climbing. please tell me any ideas, thanks!

Answer
hi, i recommend buy a electric bike conversion kits to convert it . But please note some notes,
1. Does the motor fit for your bike ? I mean that you need to measure your bike drop out , and confirm it with the seller .
2. Confirm the right wheel size with your seller . You can confirm your bike wheel size according to your bike tires , such 26 x .... , 700c x ... It means your bike is 26inch, or your bike wheel is 700c .
3. The speed 70kph is very fast, so you need to make sure that your bike frame is good enough .
I recommend that the 1500w hub motor for your bike . Its speed is about 70kph with 26inch wheel, and the controller max current is about 40 amp .

Does anybody know of a cool electric vehicle conversion kit?

Electric bike??? does an electric bike or motor cycle require license to drive on?

Q.

Answer
It depends on two basic things. One, where you live. The rules are different around the world. Two, what size bike or motorcycle it is. A bicycle with an electric motor is still a bicycle in my state. Electric motorcycles are available that go about 80 or 90 miles per hour. Those are classified as, and require the same licensing as gas motorcycles.

Electric scooter or electric bike?

I would like to have an electric scooter or an electric bike. The scooters I like are the Ezip 500, and the Ezip 750. They both can go about 17mph with my weight. The ezip 500 only has an 8 mile range. The Ezip 750 has a 12 mile range but is more expensive. I am trying to decide if I might like an electric bike better(I'm a guy so i don't know if that might look wierd). It goes the same speed as the scooters and has a 15 mile range. I only will go on short 5 mile rides. I love how the scooters ride but the bike goes farther. Also I havn't ever riden an electric bike. I don't know any1 that has one. Which one would be easier to maintain. Are there any other electric vehicles UNDER 400$. Are there any other brands. What is best for me???

Answer
These guys specialise in electric bikes
http://www.electricvehiclesnw.com/

If you can I would go for one that uses a hub motor they last much longer, currie have a bad reputation as they use a cog system which wears out pretty quickly, currie are the cheapest for a reason.
The cheapest place I have seen hub motor kits is ebay $200-400 a retail one is more like 800-1000.
http://shop.ebay.com/?_from=R40&_trksid=p3907.m570.l1313&_nkw=electric+bicycle+kit&_sacat=See-All-Categories

At the extreme end of the market there is this for $2600
http://www.greenspeed.us/e_%2B_plus_electric_bicycle.htm
For that you get speeds of 30 mph unassisted and a range of about 30miles

Can anybody tell me how is the performance of electric bikes & cars .How much economical differece?

ROCKY

is there as compared to petrol bikes & cars

Answer
"Performance" has several factors. We generally think of this on the basis of an IC engine. As a result we tend to think of acceleration, handling and fuel economy. With battery electric vehicles there is also a reference to the vehicle range on a charge. While "range anxiety" is not usually a consideration in an ICE vehicle I do recall a time in the Australian outback where I would have given almost anything for a petrol station.

Generally it takes longer for electrons to flow into a battery than for gasoline to fill a gas tank. Electrons will flow into an ultracapacitor far more quickly and development of ultracapacitors that can hold sufficient charge will resolve the issue. Alternatively if they can be made cheaply enough they could be included with batteries and will extend the life of batteries and enable the vehicle to be quickly charged with energy (from ultracapacitors at "fueling" stations. Presently the best that an electric vehicle can offer is less concentration on fueling. You fuel at home. It takes seconds to start and stop a charge. The rest of the time you can be doing other things. Alternatively you must make special trips to fueling stations where someone must pay attention to the fueling process.

Batteries in an BEV (battery electric vehicle) are typically low in the vehicle. This improves handling as it lowers the center of gravity. Acceleration in electric vehicles is better than ICE vehicles due to full torque starting from 0 RPM in electric motors.1

Under present economic conditions an electric vehicle can save its owner approximately $1000 to $1400 per year in fueling costs in addition to the increase in performance.2 The vehicle except for batteries has a projected life many times that of ICE vehicles, possibly as much as 80 years as compared to the life expectancy of an ICE vehicle of about 10 years. Present batteries have a life expectancy of between 5 to 10 years and may represent 1/2 the investment in the vehicle. Ultra capacitors would have an expected life that exceeds the rest of the vehicle. There is some question about whether the electric vehicle will depreciate very rapidly with little residual value or if the addition of newer battery packs or even ultracapacitors would be like adding an addition to real estate and possibly restore or even exceed the original value of the vehicle. It may be possible that the vehicles will appreciate rather than depreciate like a very few of the classic ICE vehicles. 3

what is a good electric assist bicycle?

Q. Im kinda plump and find it hard to ride a reg bike, makes my legs/back hurt...anysuggestions?

Answer
There are no "good" electric assist bicycles. Th cost is astronomical, the price of battery replacement is also sky high & the charge in the battery may run low or OUT at the wrong time at the wrong place. Then you are stuck pedaling a VERY heavy bicycle home under your own power.

Please don't give me that "I'm kinda plump" routine either. I started out several years ago at 315 lbs. I also have degenerative disc disease in the lower back and arthritic knees. By using the proper cycling posture & "spinning" the pedals at a "cadence" of around 70-90 rpm (if not more) at all times, you can do it too. If I can - anybody can.

Trek Electric Assist Bicycles - lowest priced one - $2,299.99 - http://www.trekbikes.com/us/en/collections/electric_assist/models/

My 2011 Raleigh Touring Road Bike - cost - $1,200 - http://www.raleighusa.com/archive/2011-steel-road/sojourn-11/

Started off on a straight hybrid with the upright sitting/riding position. Switched to road bikes about a year ago. Love 'em!!! Today I rode 26 miles! Again...don't give me that "I'm kinda plump" routine. If I can get fit & shed pounds - anyone can. Links below from the late Sheldon Brown. Please read.

Answer
Legal Low Powered Electric Assist bikes are now becoming a great alternative for tens of thousands of commuters in the US. Use an ebike for commuting and save the price of the ebike in insurance savings and service costs, And still get a workout- no more time on that dreaded treadmill at the spa.

Some young fit folks may never need one, but, if you are one of the folks that really does not want to take their car EVERYWHERE, especially to just get a loaf of bread, Ebikes may be the thing for you.

They all have on/off switches and a way to control the level of assist. People might use maximum assist going to work, but minimum assist going home for a workout. If you have asthma or arthritis, an ebike makes the bicycling world yours again- on good days- minimum assist, on bad days - you still don't have to get in the car- just use more assist.

Fifty percent of households own bicyles but less than 5% of them use them regularly. Over 50% of households with ebikes use them on a regular basis.

Some people use their $2,000 racing bike as a roof ornament and a badge of being a yuppie. Other people take ebikes every where, saving lots of money, helping the environment, and stayiing quite fit. YOU DO HAVE TO PEDAL, other wise your range is really shortened.

Right now you can get an ebike that will go 30 miles, (with your pedal assist) make it up most any hill in most cities, feels like a normal bike, can bring home 40 lbs of groceries and has no more service issues than a normal bicycle -for about $1500. And have local service in MANY US cities.

There are today some really great ebikes, much better than 3 years ago. The Bionx, www.bionx.ca , has the most bicycle like feel, and great range. Cyclone, www.cyclone-usa.com , has the most power.
Crystalyte system kits have pretty good value
http://www.poweridestore.com .

In most US states, Ebikes are legally limited to 20mph under electric power, must have pedals that work, less than 750 watts of power, and 2 or 3 wheels (not 4), and are legal where other bikes are legal. Check your state though.

For reasons of test riding and long term support, it is highly suggested that you buy your first one from a local dealer, unless you like to work on such things your self.

The average ebike rider puts on more miles than the average regular bike rider. Why? Ebikes are more fun, less hassle, and there are just less excuses to take the car.

Many ebikes are also light enough to be put on many city busses and trains- helping with "multi-mode" commuting.

(But be careful, there is some junk out there)

What is the best kind of bicycle? The one you will ride.

Try the following yahoo discussion group for indepth information on specific ebikes:

http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/power-assist/

There are great ebike dealers in Texas, Colorado, Seattle, Georgia, New York, California, Kansas, Illinois, Utah, Nevada; the list goes on and on.

can i use a pocket bike battery to power a amp for a sound system
can i use a pocket bike battery to power a amp for a little sound system. nothing really big just like one small speaker big enough to fit on a bicycle

Answer
Those batteries don't have a lot of power to give. You can use it, sure, but it may only give you 100 watts of power for one hour, if it's a 10 amp battery. You might not even draw that much power, depending on how small an amp you have. A 5 watt amp might run for more than 10-15 hours, and then start sounding weak. Those batteries are kind of heavy and you might spend $30-$50 for one.

E-Bike battery questions?

im currently looking to get a motor for my bike that's 500w, 650w or 1000w. The battery i have been told to get are far too expensive. they are 24V 10AH headway Lifepo4 battery's. but they are £250 quid i however found some batteries that where only £45 for 16 here are the specs 1.2v each , 10000mah each max discharge current 30 A max, they are NiMH rechargeable battery's, what i need to know is how long will these 16 batteries power either a 500w, 650w or 1000w motor if i connect them all up. im hoping to get around 5 hours or around 50 miles from them. all i know about the motors are the watts. it would be great if you could help me. thanks !

Answer
In physics, power (in watts) = amperage x voltage.

The 24-volt, 10-amp-hour battery gives you 240 watt-hours max.

The battery with 16 1.2-volt 10,000milliamp-hour cells gives you 16 x 1.2v x 10A-H = 192 watt-hours max.

You will NEVER get anywhere near 5 hours out of either battery running those motors at full power. Even the 24V/10A-H battery (capable of releasing just a maximum of 240 watts of power for one hour before it dies) will only give you less than 30 minutes of running on a motor putting out 500 watts of power.

Remember that electric-assisted bicycles (such as Trek's Ride+ e-bike) are not designed to run on just electric all the time. The electric motor and battery is only there to help you accelerate up to speed, then you must take over with good old fashioned pedal power.

hi guys i was curious about a few things and thought, "well i might as well ask", so here i am. lets say you dont finish your battery, are you still supposed to charge it every night? ar am i supposed ot let the battery drain out? and what type of brake should i have, the regular v brake or the disk? ive been told both ways so im not sure which one is better... last but not least, i was told that the company "Gold Model" was very good but not so known, but i was wondering is mabye someone knew if it is good and what are its bad sides? the more information the better:)

thanks
Eddie

Answer
Batteries in an electric assist bike are similar to those in a cell phone. They will last a LOT longer if you drain them down to near zero & then recharge again.

For general purpose riding, disc brakes are NOT needed. Disc brakes are only needed under the most adverse conditions - such as mud, muck & a LOT of rain.

Good electric assist bicycles cost about 2K or more. For that same amount of money, you could buy 3 or more really good "fitness bikes".
http://www.raleighusa.com/bikes-road-fitness-cadent-cadent-2

I wouldn't own an electric assist bike. What happens if the battery should go down miles from home? You are stuck pedaling a VERY heavy bicycle home again. Meanwhile...a fitness bike or even a road bike is very light & geared to climb hills easily.

Electric Bikes?

Q. Hi, for next christmas I was hoping to buy an electric bike.

However I dont know where I could get one from.

If you could please give me some links, advice, whats needed and costs for them I would be most greatful.

Thanks!
thanks alot...

Answer
There is no one "best" ebike for all situations, dont let anyone tell you different. There are many factors to consider, such as: the bicycle frame, your price range, your performance needs, your installation requirements, and after market service needs.

So lets take some well rated ebikes (all of which I have sold and still service) and compare them:

Giant suede-e (no longer sold, a few still available new, still have service and parts) a little low on power for big guys hauling large loads in tough terrain, BUT VERY Reliable and pretty light weight. Un modifiable. Turnkey- no installation issues and no service or parts issue. $1.1k

Cyclone Kit currrently sold on the internet and a few places across the US (Including me in Colorado) GREAT power. Can be a pain to install, so you have to have a specific bike for it to fit, and someone to help with or do the install unless you are pretty darn good with tools. good value, can make slight modifications, parts available, but not much service.

Bionx Kit, 36v more power than than Giant suede-e, lots of nifty hard to find features, Very bicycle-like for a kit, fairly pricy, easy install, parts available, some service. unmodifiable.

EZee bikes and kits, pretty reliable, good parts, some service, can be either a kit or a turnkey bike. moderate performance. a little pricey, but not a lot. minor mods.

Crystalyte. can be anything you want it to be, not real bicyle like. Lots of parts and internet service advise. reasonable price, controller less than the most reliable. You install- easier than a cyclone, harder than a bionx.

If you need the best performance for the money and you can work with tools and pick out your bike, then Cyclone might be best.

For today total turnkey, maybe an EZEE.

Really want to retain the bicyle feel & arent having extremes of demands- try Bionx.

With all ebikes, all connections are the biggest reliability issue, next are throttles then controllers unless stated above.

You will need to look at some discussion groups to get the best lowdown for your situation.

There are great ebike dealers in Texas, Colorado, Seattle, Georgia, New York, California, Kansas, Illinois, Utah, Nevada; the list goes on and on.

electric bikes?

free_mark5

Anyone have a electric bike, i want one that looks like a mt. bike, and can also be used without the power on.

Answer
you have several options.

Giant will be coming out with a new model this spring, check out your Giant Ebike Dealer, or
Bird Ebike in Colorado if you don't have one.

Next is the Bionx ebike add on kit, can be added to most bikes.

Also Crystalyte hub motors can be added to most Mountain bikes.

Buy from a good dealer, locally if you can.

we have several ebikes including Giant bionx, Crystalyte and others.

Your best choice will depend on quite a few factors. but first make sure where they are legal in your locality. State of NY doesn't like them.

Legal electric assist Ebikes are generally considered bicycles if they comply with the federal law HR727- Max 750watts, pedals that work, maximum 3 wheels, maximum 20mph under power. but there are exceptions so check locally.

ELECTRIC BIKE QUESTION!!! ?

mike

Ok so I wanna convert my bike to a electric bike..I want to be able to travel like 30 or so miles on it at about 25mph is this possible under 300-350 dollars? I would even consider a used one on eBay
Oh ya and my bike just a regular comfort bike with 26 inch tires
Would it be better to buy one or use a electric bike conversion kit? Thanks!

Answer
I would take that $350 & look into a lighter hybrid or performance hybrid bicycle. Bikes with electric motors, either home built or store bought, always seem to drain the charge quickly and in the wrong place. Then what? You are stuck pedaling that behemoth home on leg power. The lighter the bicycle, the easier it usually is to pedal. Especially with the 700C tires found on hybrids & performance hybrids. They're taller & thinner than those found on your comfort bike.

Well this is a subject i believe that it is worth talking about and open a good conversation!
I was reading a few days ago that the Maya that predicted the "end" of the world they believed that it was a day of celebration!(Isn't that weird).
The most possible way that we will die is a rain of sun rays.If that happens for almost 8-10 years we wont have electric power but our planet will be saved from all the bad things,1rst of all we wont have
cars,we will have bicycles.Second if we don't have power we don't have tv or any other electric device 3rd is the same with the second..if we have no power we wont have any S.Markets to buy food, the only food that we will eat is Vegetables (and IF we can find any good)so no meat because all the animals are dead which is a good thing because we will become vegetarians(I AM AND I WILL SURVIVE :p) Forth well the half planet will freeze to death and maybe burn to death..it depends! So we will loose a lot of countries!
Fifth no water because all the pipes are controlled by electric so for a while we will be very dirty people :p
The worst is the 10year black out we wont have power or any light at all the nights so that wont be the best! That reminds of March 1989 something flamed appeared in the sky in Canada in Florida and Cuba the electric was shut down and 6 million people were without power for 9hours(because of the sun rays).Or the most violent rays in 1859 the called it the "Carrington event"from the name of the astrologist Richard Carrington who first understood what was happening. For 8 days the couldn't reach(Communicate)each other.Or in 1983 the Air Force One the plane of the yet American President(Reagan)couldnt reach the "ground"so they thought that it was a Russian sabotage and maybe now we would had third world war..
So i hope i did help you with the information i gave now i just want you to tell me your opinion..do you believe in our ending or no after all that??

Answer
Look at the show V that's on now...

1st of all the myans made a spiritual prophecy and were not promoting a movie...2012 is when demons will be let loose, not the worlds end on that date. 1st millions of people will vanish off the earth. . Then demons trick people with a false religion. Some people may have abilities and perform acts thru Satans powers. There will be 3.5 years of peace at first. Then in the final days 7years past 2012-2013 all will die as foretold who reject God/Christ and go for the false religion and new world leader.

Demons are fallen angels, angels who rebelled against God. Demons are evil, deceptive, and destructive. According to 2 Corinthians 11:14-15, demons masquerade as âangels of lightâ and as âservants of righteousness.â Appearing as a âghostâ and impersonating a deceased human being definitely is a disguise that demons use as well as other things like aliens and some types of lightships/ufos.

Abductions are suspect--In cases of alien abductions the person or persons abducted are not christians nor followers of Christ or religious for that matter. In many cases these persons can atest they called on the name of the Lord...and the abduction stopped immediately. Aliens are Satans demons and are here for no other purpose but to raise the possibility that there is no God and to debunk anything that has to do with the Lord. For instance, there is already a theory that when the rapture happens...everyone left here on earth will blame it on the aliens. The missing persons and the alien presence when released by the goverment will have the widespread teachings of creation by them and their ancestors as well as other lies. This is all a plan by Satan to deceive the masses.

I want to buy an electric bike please suggest me a best website for that!?

Muhammad K

Answer
Electric bikes are very heavy, almost 100 pounds. Shipping to your home might be quite expensive. In addition, bikes are shipped in boxes only partly assembled. For an electric bike, it would be very important that the bike be assembled by a qualified technician. All this shipping and assembly could easily cost as much as you would save over buying the bike from a dealer. It probably will not cost any more to buy a bike from a local shop and you will be assured the bike is properly built and the warranty will be honoured

It is good to buy electric bike?

Answer
Aki stated, "...it is good for you health." Exactly how is it good for your health to pedal home an EXTREMELY heavy bicycle after the charge in the battery runs low or out at the wrong time in the wrong place?

A nice lightweight road bike or performance hybrid will cost a LOT less. And using that type of bicycle will make you healthier. Electric bikes will turn you into a lazy bum with no money.

Example: Lowest priced Trek Electric Assist bicycle - $2,299.99. Good entry level road bike - Trek 1.1 - $729.99.

What is the BEST Commuter Bicycle?

Q. A few weeks back I posted a question pertaining to Scooters (gas-powered) and found them in essence to be more trouble than they are worth especially so in terms of their legality from state to state so I decided to look into alternative transportation. I am now seriously considering human-powered (pedal or other) as well as electric bicycles as a less aggravating alternative to solve my transportation needs, Would someone please recommend some excellent human-powered as well as some excellent electric bikes (powerful but inconspicuous to authorities in regards to electric bikes.) Also would someone please tell me (from their own experience) how they feel about "Trikkes" I need something for commuting a short distance (two miles) to work but I'd also like the option to commute a little further comfortably if I need to, Thanks for your Input!

Answer
Look for a commuter bike or a hybrid from the local bike shop. For a trip of only two miles an electric bike is not needed. For much less then am electric bike you can get a shop quality bikes that will last 10 times longer. Stay away from Walmart and other department store bikes. A 2 mile trip on a bike should take you less then 10 min on a hybrid. You can also ride them on smooth dirt bike paths like rail trails.

Check out Trek, Specialized, Fuji, Giant, Raleigh, Cannondale, Jamis, Breezer, Schwinn, and a few others.

how fast can average 250cc motor bike like a kawasaki ninja go? also 500cc, 650?

cp

how fast can supersport bikes and superbikes go. and can 1000cc bikes go faster than superbikes(aren't they around 850cc)

Answer
Most folks I know that have owned the little 250 Ninjettes say that it will get up to 100mph on the freeway, but it might take a bit to get there.

They are easily good for 70-80mph, plus they get good mileage.

Great starter bike and a good commuter, too.

Gotta stow that ego, though. It is not a fast bike. A decent rider will still embarrass a squid on an R1 in the canyon.

A 500 will be a little faster, and the mileage will be a little worse. A 650 like Suzuki's SV or Kawi's Versys is approaching serious performance, and is about the biggest bike I would recommend for most beginners. I own a 1st gen SV, and while a 600 race replica is better on paper, the SV is a formidable machine, that is enough bike for most people who aren't thinking with their dicks.

The supersport 600s are good for 160mph on the top end, litrebikes can do 180+ and of course the mega bikes like the ZX-14 and the HayBus can do 200 with electric altering.

hi guys i was curious about a few things and thought, "well i might as well ask", so here i am. lets say you dont finish your battery, are you still supposed to charge it every night? ar am i supposed ot let the battery drain out? and what type of brake should i have, the regular v brake or the disk? ive been told both ways so im not sure which one is better... last but not least, i was told that the company "Gold Model" was very good but not so known, but i was wondering is mabye someone knew if it is good and what are its bad sides? the more information the better:)

thanks
Eddie

Electric Bikes: Car replacements? Yes/No?

northernwi

The higher end electric bikes get like 40 (perhaps more) miles with assistance. I figure, if you carry two of those (maybe one in the backpack), theres really nowhere the *average* person goes on a regular basis that wouldnt fall within an 80 mile round trip. Hills are way easier, and you wont get sweaty (if you get sweaty on a normal bike commute, that is)

There are things cars are very good at, transporting big items or multiple people, but for every day - mundane situations, do you think electric bikes could be a good alternative for most people who arent morbidly obese?

I personally think so! Its also a very green way to go about things.

Answer
Absolutely! Electric bikes are a great alternative to cars for people who wouldn't ordinarily ride a bicycle. They could replace a great deal of car traffic. A bike trailer or cargo bike/trike configuration helps address cargo needs.

This is a dealer of electric bikes and vehicles near me...have a look to see what types of products are currently available and how they could be improved:

How can I fix my electric bike?

Jay

I got an electric bike off craigslist and thought it was just missing a battery. Turns out, the bike wont even pedal. Any ideas on how I can fix it, to where I can at least pedal it like a regular bike?
http://www.electrikmotion.com/Hebb%20Step%20Through%20Electric%20Bicycles.htm that's the link to the kind of bike I have. Thanks!
What I mean by the bike wont pedal is that when you pedal the bike while on it the pedals will rotate but the tire will not. If you're not on the bike and hold the tail end in the air and rotate the pedal the wheel turns, it's like it's slipping the gear. No I didn't test ride it, I know better for the next time. Thanks so much for pointing out the obvious.

I want an electric pocket bike!!!?

Ba Gurk

I want one fast, and so far I've only found one that go's 30 mph... but they have stopped selling it right now. i was hoping one of you could tell me a website or place that sells similar ELECTRIC POCKET BIKES.

Answer
"Pocket bikes", electric or gas, in many locations are legally classified as "toys" from a legal and traffic perspective. That means that they are illegal to operate on the streets. And on sidewalks and trails too.

Non-pocket ebikes that are legal on streets are full sized bikes and are limited to under 20mph, and 750 watts which very few have.

In many locations, one must be 16 years old and have a drivers license to operate a legal ebike on the streets.

So that is why you are having trouble finding them; good retailers don't like being sued for selling inappropriate products.

Some of the above will be true for gas and electric scooters and other products too.

Check your local laws for what are legal products (for you) before parting with your money and getting into problems because some dealer did not tell you what you needed to know..

Sorry.

which kind of bike advertisements you guys like most?????/?

akkash k

can u say breifly why do you like it?
guys which kind of bike(motor) advertisement u like . And tell me why do u lke it. and do u like stunt kind of advertisement or the advertisement which will show that to attract girls????

Answer
You've left an open ended question. Do you mean motorcycles or bicycles? Do you mean television ads, radio ads, or print ads?
I build custom bicycles and electric mopeds, so I like *free* ads. My daughter designed a fiberglass ladies bicycle, and it was the number one Google result for "ladies bicycle" for over a year. I'm very happy with that because it was free advertizing. Here is a picture of the bike she designed:
http://i134.photobucket.com/albums/q119/hotbike/Type9Pink2.jpg
Here is a picture of her and her friend riding my earlier creation, the first electric moped in America:
http://i134.photobucket.com/albums/q119/hotbike/Type5withPassenger.jpg
So I ask another question; do you like ads with just a picture of the bike, or with somebody riding the bike?
I would rather see somebody riding the bike. Some bikes are artistic creations and people find it hard to believe that anyone can ride it.
I would like to take this opportunity to say that there are too many car advertismements. Bike dealers should get "equal time". They say that six thousand dollars from the sale of every new car goes to TV ads. It's unfair to the bike industry , because bikes don't cost that much.
I like all kinds of bike advertisements, and I want to see more of them.

Electric bicycle motor kit?

This is Da

Do you have an electric bike? Do you like it? Where did you get it?

Dee~Dee, h

Answer
I used to have an electric bicycle which I bought on Amazon. I reviewed it here:
http://www.ecohuddle.com/products/e-zip-mountan-trailz-elec-bike/reviews

It was pretty fun to ride. The only problem was that my commute to work is 13 miles, and the range of the battery was only around 10 miles. The weight of the battery made it hard to pedal once the charge was gone. So I just got a regular road bike and also an electric moped. But the electric bike was a fun, cheap option.

Would an electric moped scooter make it 75 miles without dying?

[Oris] [

I work at the United States Post Office and deliver mail to about 50 mailboxes a day on average. The mail route is about 72 miles a day total. Since I am only a part-time employee at the post office, they don't pay for my gas, thus, I end up spending about $200-$270 a month on it. I was seriously considering buying an electric moped scooter or something of the sort. However, how long can they go for before they need to be charged up again? Would the moped handle going about 72 miles Tuesday - Friday? Also, I deliver in a place with winding roads and two very steep hills, would it be able to go up them?

72 miles is beyond the range of the electric bikes currently available.

do you think the electric vehicle leasing scheme in hong kong will facilitate the use of electric vehicles?

Q.

Answer
You obviously are responding to a bit of news. It would be best to cite an article or other reference when asking a question like this. What I could find was this article form 2010 that referred to a leasing scheme in Hong Kong as an attempt to combat air pollution in one of the most traffic congested cities in the world. http://blogs.wsj.com/hong-kong/2011/01/31/why-electric-cars-arent-selling/

While electric vehicles should help with pollution issues it might be best to consider the traffic issues as well and then determine that the best EV would be one that is either computer controlled, part of a public transit system, or both.

In addition while the EV will reduce pollution, the gains will not be as great as possible where industry and residences rely upon coal fired power plants, the predominant electric producing facility in China.

China has also already embraced another electric vehicle solution: ebikes. http://www.fastcoexist.com/1681004/electric-bikes-have-invaded-china-is-the-us-next#1 with now more than 120 million on the roads. Because it is smaller, lighter more of them can fit on to a roadway, they are cheaper to own and to operate. Ebikes as an electric vehicle are already a success in China.

What is the best economically priced electric bike for hills ?

Fred E

Under $800

Answer
The better the battery the better the performance of an electric bike. Lead acid batteries are the mainstay to electric bikes in the lower echelon. Lead acid batteries tend to be heavy, bulky and good for relatively short bursts of power then they die. Nimh batteries can better sustain a drag on its power, it tends to be lighter, less cumbersome to manage and the service life of the charge out lasts lead acid batteries by a long shot. Then their are the lithium ion batteries. For the moment they are proven and the best of the best. Most laptop computers use lithium ion batteries. These batteries are better tied to higher performance, lower discharge rates, higher charging capacities, thus higher discharging capacities, not as bulky relatively slim and a reliably stronger pedaling assist as compared to its peers.

The price point for the electric bikes in the US is directly related to the type of battery. Electric bikes from Currie that can be purchased at a big box store can be purchase below the $800 price point with a lead acid battery. Giant and Trek both use lithium ion batteries. Their bikes are priced from $1800 to 2,600 USD. The long view would be how lucky are you to purchase a less expensive bike for $800 and you will get a trouble free 5 year service life. If you have to keep putting money into this great idea we know as an electric bike to keep it on the road, then the return on investment will be delayed or may never come. If you purchase two bikes at the $800 price point and allow for inflation of 5% or greater due to increased consumer demand and the product cycle of improvements; the cost of the two bikes within a 3-5 year period equals the original cost of a Giant or Trek sample from jump.

Best.

I am looking for an electric bike for exercise for under $500. I want electric because my area is very hilly and I want to get exercise but I'm just not in shape enough to make it up the hills without some help. Ideas for the best in my price range?

Answer
Forget the electric bike they are hard to pedal and using the motor wont give you any exercise. If you want exercise get a used stationary bike off of Craig's list or better yet go to the local bike shop and get a good hybrid bike. It will take time to be able to climb hills, if you have to get off and walk.

New mountain Bike...Help?

John

I am looking at buying a new mountain bike and converting it to electric...I was thinking about getting the Mongoose Status 3.0 but I couldn't find a single review except on Amazon...any suggestions?
I'm 13, about 120 (I know I'm a lightweight) and 5' 6"...
The reason that I want to convert a mountain bike to electric is because I do a lot of rough street riding, and a hybrid just won't do the trick. Also, I didn't mean full electric, just a lightweight hub motor for use on longer rides. So eff off about the Lego crap...it's a serious question.
Also, I don't really need advice about the electric components, I know my stuff about that.

Answer
Converting it to electric. No. Don't do this. Spend you money getting a nicer bike with less friction and you can go much faster. Or just buy a cheap, old scooter. Why are you doing this? Project?

If you're going to be using it as a mountain bike, it need not be electric, as that's dangerous. If you're using it as a scooter, it need not be a mountain bike: hybrid's. If this is a project and you're 13 and not rich, I'd pick a different project. One of the Lego Robots would make a good project with electricity(i.e. Lego's Mindstorm). Provide more info and I will too.

Kids get so angry these days.

Which is the best brand of best battery charger?

turtle mas

and what ampere rating battery charger should I use for a yamaha
yzf-R6? what difference does the ampere rating make?
I'm looking at battery doc, yuasa, battery tender, and they come in all ampere ratings from 750mA to 1.5A.
answers from any owner of these battery charger are appreciated.
Thank you in advance.

Answer
I agree with the other folks who've recommended the Battery Tender,,it's a good charger.

Your question about Amp Rating.....
In simplest terms,,Amp rating determines the SPEED at which a battery can be recharged.

A Higher Amperage will recharge a given battery Faster.

"Speed" or "Faster" is usually considered a GOOD THING.

NOT SO on Battery Charging!!!
SLOWER is Better,,for several reasons.

HEAT is a major concern.
Higher Amp /Charging Rate will always produce Higher Battery Temps,,,even if it's all within acceptable Specs.

The Lower Charging Temps can be,,the Longer the Battery Life.
The Trade off is SLOWER Charge rate.

Time to Full Charge is figured according to Battery Amp capacity.
Example:
A 1A Charger will Fully Charge a 6A Battery in 6Hours(approx)
A 2A Charger would do it in 3Hrs
A 12A would fully charge a 6A Batt in 1/2 Hr or less!!
The same 1Amp Charger would fully Charge an 80Amp Car Battery....in 80 Hours--about 3 1/2 DAYS.

So in Principle(an in practice) ANY 12Volt Charger will Charge ANY 12 Volt Battery.
It's TRUE that "1 Size Fits All".
But there's Huge Differences in the Performance/Effects amongst the various combos of Batt Size/Charger rates.
In REALITY,,,that "rule" includes a huge compromise.

The Trade-off ranges from extreme OVERCHARGING ,,OverHeating,,Boiling out the Electrolyte,& Reducing Battery LIFE,,,,,,
To being simply "TOO SLOW" to be Practical for most situations.
No one wants to wait 2~3 DAYS for their battery to ReCharge when they need to get to work the next morning.

So the matter of determining " Best SIZE Charger/charge rate"
comes down to considering The Intended Use.

The SMALLER/SLOWER the Charger,,the BETTER,,,for Battery Life,,and "personal safety".

The BIGGER/FASTER the charger,,the Better for quick charge,,getting going in a hurry,etc.

In Your instance,,,and choice of 1.5A vs 750mA(3/4A) it doesn't SEEM like that big a difference.
One is TWICE the charge rate of the Other,,
it will Charge TWICE as Fast.
But it'll also (theoretically) be able to Heat the Battery Twice as much,,boil electrolytes Twice as fast, and generate twice the sulfation rate.

I "THINK" Your battey is an 8 Amp job?
From Fully Dead,,a 1.5A charger will fully charge it in 5 Hrs approx.
That's NOT "overcharging" a 7A~12A range Battery,,,but it's nearing Borderline of what's BEST for Battery Life.

A 3/4A~~ .750mA Charger would take about 10 Hours.
That's SLOWER for YOU,,but Much Better for the Battery.

If you,,left lights on and totally Drained Battery,,,
EITHER would Fully recharge it "overnight".
Either would also recharge it "enough" in 20~30 minutes to allow Kickstarting...provided the battery is in decent physical condition.

Which is also a consideration.
You surely want to keep your battery as Healthy & Happy as possible.
But you also want the capability to deal with "worst case" of a Drained battery to be able to get going in a reasonable amount of time.
20 minutes,,to an Hour WAIT might be fine for YOU,,,while a 4hour wait would "ruin your day"...just for example.

It comes down to what an Individual NEEDS /Wants/Expects.
And the choice should be made with the awareness of the Compromises,,the trade-offs that are inevitable.

And as Contrary as it seems to "BIGGER is BETTER" thinking,,,
Smaller Chargers,,LOWER Charge Rates are BETTER for Battery Life and Reliability.

....................................................
I see you're in Illinois,,,and assume your Biking is limited during winter weather.

If that's so,,and you plan to keep your battery on maintenance charger for the several months of downtime,,,here's a suggestion.

Disconnect the battery cables,,to isolate it from the electrical system.

Keep an eye on the "water Level",,,and use ONLY Distilled Water if you need to add some.
Every grocery store,walmart,etc has it,,$1/gal
I know thats been said a Gazillion times over the last 50 million years,,,and we violate the "Distilled Water ONLY" Rule TWICE that many times and get away with it.
But it DOES make a Huge Difference, especially on Small Batteries.
The chemical/mineral elements in Tap Water/Mineral Water are "electrically" the equivalent of putting a steel screwdriver across the 2 battery terminals,,,,and/or Insulating the internal plates from electron flow.
It's a FAINT effect,,so the bad results take Time to kill the battery.
But it DOES have a distinct and CERTAIN bad effect on Batt Life & reliability.
A GOOD batt that wears out,,Gradually gets weakers and Declines in power,,,giving you "fair warning"

A "Bad" battery from effects of Overcharging,,improper maintenace,,and Wrong Water/Electrolytes--Tap Water,,,
They're "Fine" one day,,and DEAD the next...NO warning.
I dont mean run-down/discharged,,I mean DEAD>Deceased.

"Old News" on Distilled Water,we all know that,so just a reminder.

If you Do plan a "total shutdown" thru winter,,,of course you can Manually charge your battery occasionally during that time.
It's not that much hassle.

The Type of chargers your considering are made to be left on for extended periods anyway.

Ideal,,for both personal convenience And Battery health would be a TIMER that switches the Charger Itself on/off.
Switch charger ON a while,,,let the Charger's Circuitry do IT'S job,,then OFF and let both the charger & battery rest a few days.
YOUR requirement would only be maybe a monthly check of Batt's water level.

Multi-Day Timers are somewhat expensive.
You could buy a New battery next spring for "same price".
So it becomes a rather "false economy",,,any NEW battery is always gonna be better than even BEST-maintained one.

One alternative that tends to "split the difference" is the Single day/24 Hr Timers.
They're cheap enough ,,Under $10 at places like Walmart.
You can set them for a few hours of ON-time each day.
1~2 Hrs Daily Run-Time of the "Smart Chargers" will keep your Batt at Optimum Level,,,,while reduce Total Time of Charger operation.
Saves Energy,LegWork,Battery,,and Charger.
It also constitutes a sort of "extra safety" in the event the battery is "forgotten" on the charger.
Instead of Charger running on maintenance mode all day,,it gets switch OFF automatically.

A Small,Frequent Charge will maintain a battery better than Less-Frequent,more extended charge.

Granted,,that may be a Moot Point,,or even Totally Pointless for many folks.
But a cheap, simple On/Off Timer can be a very useful "charging accessory" for SOME situations.

One example,,not "scientific" and not directly comparable is the "Seasonal" Boats down here on Gulf Coast area.
I know a Bunch of people who replace a SET of batteries every Year at season's beginning,,even after "charging them thru the Off-Season"(Innefectively,,Obviously)
Well,,the simple addition of a Timer & leaving the charger connected "Full Time",,,the batteries are now giving 2 and 3 Years of Reliable Service.
In THAT application,,it's a $10~$50 Timer ,,saving $150~200 Battery set annual expense---forestalling that expense a year or 2. They can "live in the boat shed" for 6 months unattended with no worries about ever overcharging,,or going dead & sulphating themselves to death.

.................
Last Small but important point.
Batt VENT HOSE.
Make sure it's open and not pinched anywhere,,obviously.
Also consider it's Routing path,,particulrly where the Open End is positioned.

Batts make a gas(Hydrogen) which gets "blown away" by airflow during riding.
But that gas also Condenses in the tube,,and some LIQUID "battery acid" exits the tube.
Very Corrosive,,so make sure and drips can't be blown onto Bike Parts while Riding.

A Different environment and conditions exist while Charging the batt.
Any "drips" from the vent are gonna go SOMEWHERE.
With No Road Wind,,naturally they'll fall straight down.
If Damage to your FLOORING is a concern,,,use some kinda drip pan----something plastic is best,,,some common Baking Soda sprinkled in it both retains any acid,,And neutralizes it.

The GAS that exits the vent during charging is Hydrogen Gas.
That's not only Flammable,,it's Explosive.
It dont just Burn,,it DETONATES.
Like the difference between lighting a Candle and a Firecracker.

It's WAY lighter than Air,,Lighter than even Helium.
(You may be famliar with the HINDENBURG BLIMP which exloded/Burned in the '40's)It was filled with HYDROGEN.
I can't imagine of a better example.

The implication to a person charging their Battery on a bike is this:
Most all bikes have their Batt Vent Tubes routed Down and exitting at Bottom of Bike.

While sitting still,,and Batt being Charged,,and Hydrogen being produced,,,,
Where's the vented GAS going??
RIGHT,,it's wafting STRAIGHT BACK UP,,"through the Motorcycle".
Your Bike is like a chicken getting smoked on a grille,,,Except it Aint Hickory.
It's Corrosive,Acidic,Flammable Hydrogen Gas.

The "cure" is simple,,,get a length of tubing that'll slip snugly over your existing Batt Vent Tube,,,and route it AWAY from the bike.
Simply to avoid the fumes from drifting straight up back onto your bike.

The Volume of Gas produced by a charging battery is Very Small,as far as Flammability concerns.
In a normal garage,or storage shed,,,the AIR:Gas ratio is really too lean to support combustion.
BUT!!!!,,If You happen to use a COVER,,or Tarp,or whatever which DOESN'T "breathe Freely".....
It's POSSIBLE to Fill it with the extremely LIGHT Hydrogen Gas.
In effect,,a sorta "Hydrogen Balloon".
It WILL displace the Air under such a canopy.
You may not actually be creating a "Little Hindenburg Balloon-Bomb" under Your Bike's Cover,,,
But You would CERTAINLY be storing it in a Cloud of Corrosive Hydrogen Gas,,,at minimum.

Routing the Batt Vent AWAY from the Bike is a simple enough solution....and doesnt need to be anything fancy , elaborate,or expensive.

Zillions of batteries get charged doing "everything Wrong",,,and do just fine anyway,,or at least apparently Good Enough.

But a few small principles can be Better for Bike,it's Battery,,the Charger,the bike's Storage Area,,and owner's convenience ,safety,,and pocketbook.

Quick recap:
**Smaller/Slower Charger is generally Better
**Mind Batt Water Level,,stick with actual Distilled Water to add
**A cheap Timer MIGHT offer convenience & may add maintenance efficiency
**Mind the Battery Vent's Condition And Position
--Under Riding Conditions
--And,,under Parked > Batt-Charging conditions

So,,Just some ideas that may be of use in certain instances.

Take care.

Motorbike Battery Charger?

Duong H

I'm a complete noob who's just got a Honda CBR125r from another owner. This morning when I tried to ride it, the bike did not start. I supposed the cause was the battery, since the previous owner had warned me that the charge might be quite low.

Just want to know what I should do. Should I replace the battery? or should I get a charger? Please give your opinion. All comments will be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

By the way, I found a battery identical to mine on ebay.
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Battery-CTX5L-BS-YTX5L-BS-KTM-450-530-EXC-F-EXC-R-electric-start-2005-2011-/190727917308#ht_852wt_1163

and also a charger.
http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=290821746789

are they compatible?

Answer
You need low amps. around 2 would be fine. I use an old bag phone charger but you could hook it up in series with another system. too fast charging will ruin the battery. Does this bike have a kick start? Even if you have a tiny bit of juice in the battery it should still run and charge itself.

It is good to buy electric bike?

Fren

Electric Vehicle - Bike?

ffww72

Hello, I'm doing a science fair project on an electric bike conversion, and I'm planning to convert it by myself. But I'm a relative beginner, so can anybody advise me on what battery/motor to use in order to produce the most efficiency? How many batteries? How much would the battery and motor cost?

Also, do I have anything else to buy?
Thank you for your time.

Answer
If you want to take the easy route, there are kits available to convert a regular bike to electric.

You can use sealed lead acid (SLA), nickel metal hydride (NiMh), or lithium ion batteries. SLA are cheapest and have the shortest lifespan, lithium ion are most expensive and last longest. They generally use something on the order of one 36V12ah battery.

Generally the motor is in the neighborhood of 400-500 Watts.

Depending mostly on what kind of battery you choose, the whole thing can cost anywhere from $300 to $2000.
