Buying a scooter -2 options electric or gas?

froggygeek

Hey I need help with a upcoming purchase I'm planning to make. I need a stand-up scooter to get to college/ back/ more every day next year. The state I live in does not permit a motorized bike/ moped ( or anything that is motorized with a seat) to be driven without a driver's or a motorcycle license- and I have neither.

I graduated early and because I'm going to college I have no money.. but because I don't need to pay for insurance on a car or motorcycle ( and I'm a young male so I'm glad ) I have managed to get a $1200 budget which is pretty fair I'd say.
----------------------------------------------
So I looked around online and found 2 respectable scooters - One is electric - On is petrol powered
and I would like to know which of these I should choose or if there is another option that would work better for me? -
The petrol version is a GoPed brand scooter - the GSr46R - Pretty fast 35 mph+ stock.. but because this is my little scooter, and like anyone with a car, I'm looking to tune it up.. and I have an arrangement that is just under 1200 dollars that will get this thing going upwards to 50+, of course I don't need that speed, but I figured if I'm spending this kinda money on a scooter, its gotta be nice, I also plan to use this as entertainment as well

The electric can be seen here - http://superscootersales.com/?wpsc-product=super-turbo-1000-lithium -
It took me quite a while to find a Lithium powered scooter for this price, and with this power... I refuse to get a Sealed Lead Acid battery because while I surely can do without the weight, and charging time.. the life span is what concerns me. This scooter company claims this thing will last upwards of 1000-1500 cycles which is pleasing... but with a top speed of (possibly) 32 mph its a little upsetting because again I don't need the speed for the general transportation, I would certainly use it if I could.

Pros & Cons of the Gas Scooter-
Pros first-
Name Brand, Well known, & Trusted Company (and site)
Speed - Tuned, I can ride this thing going (up to) 55 which may be illegal but I don't mind ;)
Life Span - Some Years, I will take care of it
Perfectly Priced & Customized

Cons
Noise - This is the reason these things are illegal in other states and I don't want that to happen here, because of me. Its louder with the expansion chamber I would apply but I've put many silencers and smoother mechanisms into the design I wish to buy (hopefully will help)
Gas/Oil - Surely Gas isn't a problem, I believe it gets about 60+ mpg and runs 21 miles per 1.5l tank.. which is good.. but its partially oil.. I'm not sure how much is used per tank, I haven't crunched the numbers but it may concern me if I need to buy specific oil every now and then just to use this thing- depends on how often
Electric---------
Pros
1000 watt Battery - Best you can get in a stock scooter
Lithium - Lasts Longer, Lighter, More powerful, Faster Charge
32 mph top speed - Great for electric .. Might be worth it
Rechargeable.. simplicity is nice :P
Silent - Perfect
Cons
Brand - Good Product Reviews & Customer Service - Not as known as GoPed
Stock- No customization/ personality :(
Speed - Good & Bad - can't decide - I just don't want to be disappointed . and I know I wont with the gas version

I know that's alot to read .. And if you did, you rock you'll definitely have a better answer ;D than others who didn't read this.

Answer
I'd say. Go for the electric. Because i think GSr46R has a 2 stroke engine. so it would be much nosier and will produce a lot of smoke. And a small scooter like that is not very stable when you reach 45-50

I'm wanting to buy an electric hybrid bicycle. looking at the Victory folding electric bike. anyone own one?

jane_doe_e

the whole product description is- Victory folding 6-speed 180W Power Assist 12"/16" electric bicycle. it is sould through amazon but absolutely no customer reviews can be found anywhere. not asking much for the price, just wonering if it is a complete lemon.

Answer
I did not see the ad, but I can tell you 180 watts is nothing. we have a 750 watt limit here in the USA for a reason.

Europe has a 250 watt limit and everyone is complaining there.

I80 watts is too small, it borders on being a toy.

found the ad:
However, for the price, if you are a smaller person (under 150lbs) and will pedal a lot with it, it just might be OK.

I like e-folders, and want one. I have every kind of ebike in the shop, if I was not in the trade, I would be tempted by this. Oh and wasn't 6'2" and 230lbs.

Electric motor for bike?

Q. I have a recumbent bike - E-Z Sport. I am looking for an electric motor for it - for a good price. The best I can find is an E4 for $700. Can anyone help me find a better deal? I love biking but have become disabled and need a motor in order to contine biking with family.
I can't use a moped on bike trails. I want to continue biking with my family on bike trails.

Answer
I assume your U.S. have a look at this kit. The motor is very efficient (>95%). This will give you the best range out of what ever batteries you choose.

http://www.cyclone-usa.com/store.php?crn=199
You can buy the kit or just the motor/gearbox.

Being a recumbent you should be able to mount the motor near your idler pulley and keep your original chainrings. The down side to this method will be that you need to pedal when the motor is on. Depending on your disability you may wish to go with the freewheeling chainring that they supply with the kit.

A front hub motor will not work so well on a recumbent (not enough weight on the wheel)

What are the best electric bicycles/brands on the market?

Q. I've heard about I-Zip so far but they are the only ones I know of. Are there any other good brands?

Answer
"Best" ? As an industry adviser, I hear this question all the time.

what is really important is what is best for your needs; some folks need mammoth hill climbing, others need great range, others want light weight.

The Ezee brand ebikes, and Bionx are pretty darn good.

I zip/schwinn is having warranty problems.

Giant if you need great range and nationwide service.

Be careful with crystalyte in the rain unless you get the go hub.

Make SURE that diagrams, skilled repair people, parts and a warranty are available.

many folks are disappointed that there is no service and their $1200 investment is useless after the first minor problems.

Which is the best Bike among Bajaj Discover & Yamaha Gladiator ?

anil s

In terms of Mileage ,Performence, cost, technical etc.?

In 125 CC class of bike.

Answer
discover...

The Bajaj Discover DTS-i is one of the more powerful bikes amongst the choice currently available in the 125cc class. In terms of peak power it beats all the current 125cc bikes and is also a shade more powerful than the Hero Honda Ambition.

But taking the Discover's package as a whole for comparison with bikes that are either in the higher or lower engine capacity will mean taking into account the expectations and priorities of the potential buyer.

In the looks and fit and finish department, there are a number of bikes that would tie in the rankings list. In a face off with the Discover, these will include the Hero Honda Passion Plus, the TVS Victor GLX 125, the Yamaha Fazer and to some extent the Bajaj Wind 125.

Of these, the Hero Honda Passion Plus is clearly the odd one out if you consider the bike's smaller 97.2cc engine capacity and its lower peak power. Among the Fazer, the Discover, the Wind 125 and the TVS Victor GLX, the Yamaha bike is a shade less powerful at about 10.8bhp, as would be the Bajaj Wind 125. The TVS Victor GLX's peak power at about 9.7bhp is clearly the lower of the four 125cc bikes. All the three new bikes in this class â the Fazer, the Victor GLX and the Discover â are pretty similar in terms of their low-end torque characteristics.

The Fazer, the Victor GLX and the Bajaj Discover feature only four-speed gearboxes, while the Hero Honda Ambition and the Bajaj Wind 125 offer five-speed shifters.

Though we did feel that the Discover's gearbox could have been a tad bit more refined and missed the fifth gear slot on the highway, the bike was slick enough during our in-city sorties (see Auto Focus story above). To that extent a predominantly city rider may not really be able to settle down in the fifth gear slot. Vibrations were also low in the Discover and the bit that was felt was only after the bike crossed the 70 kms per hour speed marker.

Comparing the prices of the three new bikes in the 125cc category, while the Yamaha Fazer and the TVS Victor GLX retail for about Rs 44,000 and Rs 44,300 respectively (ex-showroom Chennai), the Discover is priced at about Rs 43,700.

All the three prices are for the drum brake versions. But the added advantage of the Bajaj Discover is that this mid-level version comes fitted with an electric start, while the other two makes only come with a primary kick-start mechanism.

The thumb starter in the Discover has also been refined to offer a more efficient quick start experience. This new Bajaj bike can be expected to come up with a mileage of 50-55 kmpl in city conditions in the long run depending on whether the ride control switch is on or off.

On the highway that would go up to 60-65 kmpl. So, for buyers who are extremely fuel efficiency conscious, the TVS Centra or the Hero Honda Splendor Plus may be the better option. For others the Discover will be an attractive, value-for-money choice.

Disc brakes dramatically improve the bike's braking performance. Disc brakes are inherently more effective than drum brakes. But that will be the case with higher-powered bikes and the difference may not be that significant with smaller engine, lower-powered motorcycles.

Disc brakes use calipers that apply pressure on a perforated disc attached to the wheel frame, unlike drum brakes that feature an expanding shoe that applies pressure to the drum, which in turn slows the speed of the wheel.

Hence, the braking distance is reduced by a large margin with the use of disc brakes compared to drum brakes. But the disc brake on the front wheel has to be applied cautiously and simultaneously along with the drum brakes at the rear (as is the case with most bikes in India) to be most effective and safe.

An abrupt, sharp application of the front disc brake alone can lead to a potentially dangerous situation where the rider could get thrown off the bike. Disc brakes should be opted for if the bike's maximum speeds go past the 80 km per hour.

The disc brake version of the Discover is not available nationwide yet. And yes, Hero Honda is said to be working on a new 125cc bike. More details are awaited.

Need advice on these electric scooters?

lil miss

The description from the guys selling them was that they were Phanthom IV and Sola models but I can't find a review online anywhere. He wants $400 dollars for both of them... we live about three 4-5 miles from work and we just want a way to commute back and forth in a cheap way. Are these good?

http://s307.photobucket.com/albums/nn292/mrs_strawn/?action=view&current=small_1927961214682457.jpg

Answer
Well the price is certainly good. As grizz mentioned the problem will be getting a replacement battery for the Phantom IV. The Sola shouldn't be a problem.

http://www.batteriesplus.com/products/78-0/6111-Scooter-Batteries--Electric/253517-Sola-Scooters/Night-Rider/1.aspx

Bear in mind that both of these scooters have a top speed of about 15 mph, so they're not exactly speedy. That's about as fast as you can go on a decent bicycle.

But again, the price is really good. The only issue is that the batteries will eventually need replacing, and you're probably up a creek when the Phantom battery dies. A bicycle or even electric bicycle wouldn't be a bad option either.

Solar Panel wattage for my Electric Bike?
I am looking to purchase an Electric Bike for transport to work. I work on an Organic farm and need to save some energy up those hills.

I'm looking at Ebay in Australia as I am immigrating down there. I prefer to afford the foldable/portable solar panel system: 80 watt, 120 watt, 160 watt, but IF necessary a bit more.

Electric bike??? does an electric bike or motor cycle require license to drive on?

Md

Answer
It depends on two basic things. One, where you live. The rules are different around the world. Two, what size bike or motorcycle it is. A bicycle with an electric motor is still a bicycle in my state. Electric motorcycles are available that go about 80 or 90 miles per hour. Those are classified as, and require the same licensing as gas motorcycles.

How can I fix my electric bike?

Jay

I got an electric bike off craigslist and thought it was just missing a battery. Turns out, the bike wont even pedal. Any ideas on how I can fix it, to where I can at least pedal it like a regular bike?
http://www.electrikmotion.com/Hebb%20Step%20Through%20Electric%20Bicycles.htm that's the link to the kind of bike I have. Thanks!
What I mean by the bike wont pedal is that when you pedal the bike while on it the pedals will rotate but the tire will not. If you're not on the bike and hold the tail end in the air and rotate the pedal the wheel turns, it's like it's slipping the gear. No I didn't test ride it, I know better for the next time. Thanks so much for pointing out the obvious.

I Want a Electric pocket bike for my birthday and i cant decide which one to get!! I have seen the Xp-700 rice pocket bike and the minimoto maxii 400.Which one is better? If there are faster ones than those please tell me!!
ok never mind!! I am loking at gas ones now and i want one that goes around 30 mph. It needs to have a speedometer and lights and stuff. Needs 20 be between 100$ and 350$ Thanks!!!

Answer
I got an X1 Ninja 49cc pocket bike and my brother got a Giovanni pocket bike. Mine fit great and was big enough to be comfortable and not feel like you're riding a rollerskate, but had poor acceleration because of the clutch. His, on the other hand, had great speed, but was so tiny that the smallest bump made the name "krotch rocket" live up to its potential. Ended up buying my brothers, and with some modifications put the racing motor in mine.
BEST pocket bike ever. Worked well even offroad, and went about 45 tops. If you are looking for the bike like the one I made, you need to be good at modifying things. If not, and you want the fastest, most powerful, the 110cc pocket bikes are FAST, up to 75mph.
I would choose the ninja X series (x1, x2, x7, ect(the one that looks like an actual street bike)) style pocket bikes and simply upgrade the clutch. Not that hard to do, and would leave you with a sturdy, fast, strong bike.

what are the laws regarding electric bikesincuding eastcleveland euclid

Answer
Depends what kind of bikes you're talking about.

Electric bicycles have the same laws as regular bicycles.

For electric scooters and mopeds, it depends on your local laws. In California, if you have a stand-up scooter that doesn't go faster than 20 mph, anyone can ride it and you just need a helmet. The same is true for a sit-down moped with pedals that only goes 20 mph. If you have a moped without pedals and/or can go faster than 20 mph, you need a Class M motorcycle license. But that's just California.

Electric Bike?

Q. Hey I'm going to be moving a ways away from my kung fu school. So I will have to bike there but we are talking like 30 miles away at least. So my question is if anyone knows what that bike adapter kit is where it lets you switch between pedaling and driving?

Answer
there are allot of electric bikes and kits out there, but the problem is weight, performance, and distance per charge, remember, if you use those batteries for 10-20 Miles they are bone dry, and you have to pedal with an additional 80 pounds of weight, so you think, i ll add more batteries, but then you add more weight, then you need a bigger motor, so on and so forth, to have a more efficient setup you would need lighter batteries that last longer, lithium ion, or nickle metal hybrid, but they are very pricey, and you would need allot of them.

electric biking is not yet a transportation alternative, unless your going very short distance.

but if you wait, I'm currently working on a revolutionary concept for power assisted bicycles that will be available on the market for the summer of 2007 and will give you a 250 mile autonomy, and will only add 9.2lbs.

Would an electric moped scooter make it 75 miles without dying?

[Oris] [

I work at the United States Post Office and deliver mail to about 50 mailboxes a day on average. The mail route is about 72 miles a day total. Since I am only a part-time employee at the post office, they don't pay for my gas, thus, I end up spending about $200-$270 a month on it. I was seriously considering buying an electric moped scooter or something of the sort. However, how long can they go for before they need to be charged up again? Would the moped handle going about 72 miles Tuesday - Friday? Also, I deliver in a place with winding roads and two very steep hills, would it be able to go up them?

I'm really on the fence about exactly what I want. I live in Berkeley, California, and I really don't know what I want, except that it should go at LEAST 18-20mph, and have at LEAST a 10 mile range per charge. Pedalling combo might be good too, but I'm not sure. Give me as much concise information as you can.

Answer
It depends how much you're willing to spend. I owned one (in fact I'm currently trying to sell it) that had a range of about 13 miles and top speed of 20 mph that initially cost about $1300.

Now I own one which has a range of 30 miles and top speed of 50 mph which cost $3600.

I also owned an electric bike which would have worked well in Berkeley (that's where I went to college, btw) and only cost $350.

Bike to work?

biker2b

I would like to start riding my bike to work, but the roads are less than prime condition. I mean, no shoulders or bike lanes and crazy drivers. Would this still be feasible? It's only about 5 miles one way, but what sort of precautions should I take? I was also considering getting an electric bike because parts of the route are hilly, do these makes hills easier?

Answer
My boyfriend wants to do the same thing....you're not him are you? Hmmm....

Anyway, its a good idea to wear a helmet and bright, reflective clothing.

The electric bike would make the hills much easier. I don't know from experience, but apparently you just pedal normally to charge it and you don't put forth any extra effort when going up hills. Just keep pedaling.

Also consider the weather. If it's not too hot where you are 5 miles would be ok...if you are in shape. You should do a practice ride when you don't need to go into work to see if you could make it. Also, will you have a backup plan if it's raining when it's time to go home? I would wear clothing specifically for the ride and have water and a backpack with clothes to change into once I got to work and a rain pancho just in case ...as well as some deodorant!

You could also ride your bike to a VIA bus stop and load up your bike.

I don't know how close you are to a Walmart in india, but you can order a izip or ezip electric bike for around 25000 to 45000 rs.

Order it off their website and have it shipped to the nearest store location for free. It does have pedals but it is actually better transportation then an equally priced scooter.

how much does an 1200w electric bike cost if u charge it all day?

Q. an roomate of mine has an electric bike an the electric bill jump from 280$-420 is that possible

Answer
Hi, walker. The answer u wanted depends on the cost per unit kilowatt in your country. Because, electrical energy=w*t where w is the power consumed and t is the time in seconds. If you charge your bike a whole day,it consumes 1728 kwh. If your rate per unit is 1, you have to pay 1728 for it. If u were in india, rate per unit is Rs.0.75 and you will be paying Rs.1298 for it. Did i confuse you buddy? If u want more mail me at contact me.sundar@yahoo.in

there are allot of electric bikes and kits out there, but the problem is weight, performance, and distance per charge, remember, if you use those batteries for 10-20 Miles they are bone dry, and you have to pedal with an additional 80 pounds of weight, so you think, i ll add more batteries, but then you add more weight, then you need a bigger motor, so on and so forth, to have a more efficient setup you would need lighter batteries that last longer, lithium ion, or nickle metal hybrid, but they are very pricey, and you would need allot of them.

electric biking is not yet a transportation alternative, unless your going very short distance.

but if you wait, I'm currently working on a revolutionary concept for power assisted bicycles that will be available on the market for the summer of 2007 and will give you a 250 mile autonomy, and will only add 9.2lbs.

Which is the best buy? YO Bikes or Scooty Pep+90cc in India?

spaharionl

Answer
The YO because it is an electric bike can not be compared to the TVS Scooty Pep gas bike.

I believe the Scooty Pep is better because it has petrol motor.

i want to buy a electric bike ranging between 30000 to 40000 rs . it should be electric moped with no pedals.?

ashu

it should be economical.no need to wear helmet and need no licence

Answer
I don't know how close you are to a Walmart in india, but you can order a izip or ezip electric bike for around 25000 to 45000 rs.

Order it off their website and have it shipped to the nearest store location for free. It does have pedals but it is actually better transportation then an equally priced scooter.

does anybody have any experience with electric bikes?

Bruce (Bil

I' really interested in Schwins . . . . .

Answer
I have some experience with electric bikes. Here's what I know.

Any of the cheaper electrics, $500 or less, will not last a long time. If you take care of it, treat it nice, do EXACTLY what the instructions say regarding charging and riding, you'll probably get 2 years of regular use out of it. That's really not bad in my opinion for an inexpensive bike. It will probably save you that much in gas if you use it enough.

That being said, there are some more expensive electrics out there that are really good. The one I have experience with is the Giant Suede E. It's $1000, and will probably last years longer than those cheaper ones. You still have to take proper care of the battery, and try not to ride it through lakes, or into the ocean, but it's a quality bike, made to ride often and be durable.

Either way, you're getting something that will make it easier to bike, so you can get your workout, but not have to worry about getting home. If you use it for short trips around town it can save you tons in gas, not to mention the environment, and frankly, they're just fun to ride.

Electric bike- I want to buy one that is top quality and easy to use?

irunwithbu

Any suggestions on a great electric bike?
I want to get a bike that I can pedal and goes maybe 20 mph??

Answer
I bought one recently, but it wasn't top quality - actually it was the cheapest I could find. The E-Zip Mountain Trailz. It's actually pretty good, but the realistic range is only about 13 miles.

I've heard that Giant makes some really good ones:

http://nycewheels.com/giant-electric-bike.html

As does Currie Technologies. They make both the E-Zip (cheap version) and the i-Zip (higher quality).

http://www.currietech.com/html/07_ezip_main_prod.html
http://www.izipusa.com/

The main things you want to look at are range, battery type, and weight. Obviously lighter and longer range are better. Mine claims to go 15-22 miles/charge and only gets 13, so performance may not meet the claims. I think the range claims are based on biking pretty slowly.

Sealed lead acid batteries are the cheapest and most economical, but only last about a year. Bikes with NiMh batteries last about twice as long, but the battery costs about 3 times as much as a SLA battery. Lithium ion batteries are very expensive but last a very long time.

Good luck.

I need a quality electric bike, anyone know anything about Pietzo?

Peter

I found this company and their bikes sound like what I am looking for. They have some good customer reviews but I thought I would ask if anyone else had experience with them before I made the purchase.

http://electric-bicycle-store.pietzo.com/

Answer
The only experience I have with electric bikes is watching the riders run out of their electrical charge way too fast. Then they are stuck pedaling an extremely heavy bicycle home.

I've met only one person (a lady) who owned one & was happy with it. But, she also stated she was never any more than 1/2 to maybe 1 mile from home on it.

What's wrong with a real bicycle? You'll get a work-out & be healthier.

What is the best electric bicycle out there?

Tim

Looking for an electric bicycle for commuting...range isn't too crucial as long as it's greater than 10 miles. Affordability is important.

Answer
There are now many electric assist bicycles out there. Some come complete and some kits you adapt to your own bicycle. A great place to start might be here: http://www.electricbikesreviews.com/

There are two general types of electric assist bicycles. They are hub motors and friction motors. For either one the motor and batteries will add weight to the bicycle.

Features you will want to look for should include:

Light with a good power to weight ratio.
The added weight of the batteries should be well placed for the design of the bike and not simply put anywhere.
Ability to remove the battery for charging inside the home.

Regenerative braking captures inertial energy and tries to convert that back into electricity to charge the battery. Bicycles are much lighter than a car and so have less inertial energy to capture. Batteries can't accept a massive influx of energy at once. As a result batteries are not so good to capture inertial energy. The good news is that while this may not be an extremely useful feature it virtually comes free with an electric motor

A fairing of some sort will extend range probably more than regenerative braking. Because of its lower wind resistance an electric recumbant makes some sense: http://www.recumbents.com/wisil/e-bent/default.htm

It is good to buy electric bike?

Answer
Aki stated, "...it is good for you health." Exactly how is it good for your health to pedal home an EXTREMELY heavy bicycle after the charge in the battery runs low or out at the wrong time in the wrong place?

A nice lightweight road bike or performance hybrid will cost a LOT less. And using that type of bicycle will make you healthier. Electric bikes will turn you into a lazy bum with no money.

Example: Lowest priced Trek Electric Assist bicycle - $2,299.99. Good entry level road bike - Trek 1.1 - $729.99.

Electric Vehicle - Bike?

ffww72

Hello, I'm doing a science fair project on an electric bike conversion, and I'm planning to convert it by myself. But I'm a relative beginner, so can anybody advise me on what battery/motor to use in order to produce the most efficiency? How many batteries? How much would the battery and motor cost?

Also, do I have anything else to buy?
Thank you for your time.

Answer
If you want to take the easy route, there are kits available to convert a regular bike to electric.

You can use sealed lead acid (SLA), nickel metal hydride (NiMh), or lithium ion batteries. SLA are cheapest and have the shortest lifespan, lithium ion are most expensive and last longest. They generally use something on the order of one 36V12ah battery.

Generally the motor is in the neighborhood of 400-500 Watts.

Depending mostly on what kind of battery you choose, the whole thing can cost anywhere from $300 to $2000.

What is the lifespan of an electric bike?

archa_pyus

Say you have an electric bicycle that is used daily, capable of a 30 mile range before needing re-fuelling and a speed range of 3-15mph.

What would be its likely lifespan, i.e. when would the whole thing have to be replaced?

I do not need exact measurements, just the general idea, as it is for a project for which i have to design an electric bike, which i know nothing about.

thank you!

Answer
The life span of an electric bike is mostly determined by the battery. Batteries can have a memory and if recharged before depleting it completely will reduce the capacity and can affect the range.

I would do some research on batteries. You can also look up motorized hubs to put on bikes, they make for the cleanest design.

Motors are rated in watts and most states have regulations that control the maximum amount of power that you can use.

how much does an 1200w electric bike cost if u charge it all day?

Q. an roomate of mine has an electric bike an the electric bill jump from 280$-420 is that possible

Answer
Where can I buy an electric dirt bike?

SuperNik7

I am 14 years old and I want an electric dirt bike to ride around my neighborhood or the woods. In Ohio where I live, I can`t find any place that sells them, or online besides Zero but they are way too expensive and little big for me. I don`t want a little kid one that is tiny, I want a good one my size. I am 5'5" and looking for something like this. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=scasEb2D4DI

I don`t think I am able to build one either because I have no experience in building electric dirt bikes neither do I have the money to do so. I do not want a gas powered dirt bike because it would require a licence plate, gasoline, and i cant ride it on side walks :/ plus it`s a little loud too.

10pts for best answer! Thanks!

Answer
you dont need a license to ride a off road dirt bike. You just need the off road registration in order to ride on public lands that allow these bikes. Otherwise you can ride all you want on private property. Also an electric one will be a hassle how are you going to charge it when you are away from home in the woods or out and about?

Electric starter for a Honda xr250r dirt bike?

motoboy2

I have a 2004 honda xr250r, does anyone know if they make an electric starter for? If so where can i buy one?

Answer
They don't, sorry man. It would be really dificult to do that anyway because you would need to install a full electric system, which would include mounting batteries. you would have to get a starter motor off a different bike and hope by some chance that it fit, making a full seal against the gasket, whouch would be a one in a million.

I tried the same thing with a pocket bike and wasted my time and money to find out that it was wishfull thinking.

Just sell it and buy one that does.

Is an electric scooter with under 50cc in California considered a moped or a bike?

Speranza

Hi, I am choosing to sell my car that is 400 dollars every couple of weeks for repairs.
I want to have a moped instead, and I do not intend to go at a high speed or travel far. I solely want to use one to commute to college, which is 3 miles from my house.

I was wondering if I'd register the following as bikes or mopeds at the DMV because some come with pedals...

Answer
What *IS* a "moped" -- http://www.leginfo.ca.gov/cgi-bin/calawquery?codesection=veh
---quote---
406. (a) A "motorized bicycle" or "moped" is any two-wheeled or three-wheeled device having fully operative pedals for propulsion by human power, or having no pedals if powered solely by electrical
energy, and an automatic transmission and a motor which produces less than 2 gross brake horsepower and is capable of propelling the device at a maximum speed of not more than 30 miles per hour on level ground.
---end quote ---
The first vehicle has a 500 watt motor, it is legally a "moped." Problem -- http://taotao.us/index.cfm/electric-vehicles/ate-501/ -- it is only capable of 20 mph. You can ride a pedal bicycle faster. To ride legally you need to have a Class-M2 (or Class M1) endorsement on your driver's license. You must have to take and pass the CMSP Basic Ridercourse class.

The second vehicle can hit 50 mph. It is *NOT* a "moped." It is a motorcycle, same as my 652cc cruiser. To ride legally you need to have a Class-M1 endorsement on your driver's license. You must have to take and pass the CMSP Basic Ridercourse class.

The requirements for an M2 license are *exactly* for an M1 license. You can a Moped (M2), or a Moped or motorcycle (M1) license. Since it takes the *same* to get an M2 license, you might as well get the M1.

The BAD: Either is Cheap Chinese Crap. Neither is reliable. Neither has parts. Neither have a dealer for service. Buy one and in less than 6 months you will likely have to toss into the trash and buy another.

The GOOD: You can click on Craigslist and find a used 50cc Japanese scooter for under $1000 -- with a dealer nearby that will service and have parts available.

Could a person under 16 operate a motorized vehicle on a roadway or sidewalk?

Culley

my son is 14 going on 15 and I was wondering if it was legal for him to operate one of the following vehicles on the road or sidewalk:
- Go cart
- Moped (less than 50cc)
- Motorbike (less than 50cc)
- electric motorbike
- A bike converted to run off a chainsaw engine

Just for reference we live in Loudon County, Va. in a suburban bordering on rural area. Also if you know any other street or sidewalk legal vehicles he could operate, could you suggest them? I have a price limit of around $1000, but willing to spring for something if you recommend it. Thanks!!

Answer
Motor vehicle laws are local and this forum is National with international visitors. Your best source of information will be you state DMV which may have some FAQ you could check on a website like this one: http://www.dmv.state.va.us/drivers/#teen.asp

You also might look for your specific question relative to your state

Go carts seem to be available for off road use: http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20090707204036AAnwhK5 contact those in business for the relative regulations

Mopeds in Va: http://www.scootrichmond.com/shopping-tools/virginia-moped-and-motorcycle-laws

motorized bicycles at less than 49cc would come under the moped exemptions/restrictions: http://www.motoredbikes.com/showthread.php?36692-Motorized-bikes-in-Virginia

Electric bikes seems to also fall under moped rules: http://www.electricvehiclemall.com/pdf/Virginia_E-Bike_Law.pdf

The fatal exclusion is that your son must be 16.

Should China move the capital from Beijing to somewhere in the interior heartland because of overcrowding?

Q. I know that South Korea is looking to move their capital out of Seoul because of the same reason.
I read this article on the BBC News about the proliferation of electric bicycles in Beijing:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/asia-pacific/8538221.stm

Then I thought, wouldn't moving the capital to an interior location help in economic development there?
Would you support such a move?

Answer
Most traditional capitals tend to be the largest city around. Though some countries, like Australia, have their capital in the what amounts to the countryside (canberra).

China has a huge government, moving it would be difficult. Certainly many of the government people might not want to go.

In addition, beijing is one of the traditional capitals. They could move the capital to Nanjing (another traditional capital). While nanjing is smaller, it is much more crowded than Beijing.

Finally, I really have not seen many reasonably sized cities that were overcrowded. For this reason many citis are moving their government functions out of the city to the surrounding countryside.

Curious about solar powered cars?

~Fish Go P

I have been wondering for a few weeks off and on about solar powered cars. How come we dont have them yet? So far the only thing i have seen solar powered on a car is the air conditioner and as great as it is im not too impressed.. this has stemmed off from solar powered cars to alt fuels to why we still rely on fossil fuels so badly when the offshore drillings slowly killing our oceans and animals in those oceans who rely on it to be clean for them to live in.. which went to nuclear power plants STILL in existence.. these will put us in so much danger its inconceivable the impact it would have if something were to go terribly wrong.. which.. never drop your guard.. it could always happen .. has no one else heard of the giant chernobyl accident? Use windwills.. something other than what we use now.. We could be so much more energy efficient without killing the planet of people animals plants and what have you and yet we do nothing about it..

blah anyways off topic there.. but yes.. why do we not have solar powered cars.. with all the major bankruptcy going on i think they could find a good way to fix that and at the same time help the environment.. sadly im sure they would overprice the living crap out of them.. its always money before anything else with the bald heads..

i would like to know anyone elses opinions about this topic..

thanks a bunch

environmentalist pook :P
im sure this questions been asked a lot in this part of the forum.. sorry if it happens often

Answer
Solar power is not efficient enough to directly power a car (Especially if raining or overcast all day). In Australia, and other places there are solar powered auto races but all the "cars" are not much more than slow moving 3 wheeled bicycles with flat tops covered with solar cells. They only carry one lightweight person. Large utility sized solar plants are planned for the southwestern part of the US. But we don't yet have the battery technology to store this solar energy and move it around with us in a car.
Hoi yik also asked this question a few minutes ago. My answer to him was: People want to travel more than the 40 miles on batteries today's affordable electric cars can give (read up on Chevy's Volt, it only goes 40 miles before the gas engine kicks in). Tesla Motors has an electric car that runs on lithium metal oxide batteries, and the car can go one to two hundred miles before it needs a charge (problem - how long to recharge it), BUT the car cost over $100,000. Not affordable to most people.
Check out the web sites: http://earth2tech.com/2009/03/26/zenn-mo... and zenncars.com. The hope to soon sell a car that goes 500 miles on a 5 minute charge, and be affordable. EEstor's combined battery/ultracapacitor does not seem to be ready (or they don't have the money to ramp up production) yet. EEstor isn't saying much. PS The "special equipment" need to recharge these batteries will be very easy to install in current gas stations, office parking lots, etc.
PS: Besides the Russians, nobody uses the type of reactor used to build Chernobyl. And even their similar reactors have been improved upon safety wise. Since the last reactor was built, technology has greatly improved.
And with desert solar power plants, people are against them because the turtles in the desert have survived in the sunlight for thousands of years. The environmentalists are afraid of what the effect of shade from the solar collectors will have on the desert life.
Todays wind mills (vertical, large slow moving blades) may not kill as many birds, but they still cause a decrease in air pressure which destroys the lungs (and kills) insect eating bats.
Millions of dollars have been spend on improving the safety of nuke plants and oil wells. When was the last time you read about a massive oil spill from an offshore well? They are all from old ships used to transport oil around the world.
So now, who can say one energy production method is safer than another?

why gas prices are so high?

ronilo

we have a car and we suffer of this gas crisis. Im wondering why, nature does not get money from those oil miners, they get gases underground for free!!!!and why do they increase the prices of these FREE gases underground???

high demand??? what a heck, why the dont suck gas underground to make millions and millions and billions of gallons of gas. or get a underground gas-sucking device???

im mad of those high prices.

or, mother nature makes it high to reduce global warming??? oh men, go back to bicycle...

and i expect that the prices WONT get down when it higher.

Answer
we cant do anything but to reduce the usage. china and other countries use more gases and we pay for it. bikes? electric cars are better. if the gas prices become low, i think it will be in 2012, or something like that.... and i think that we already sucked the rest of the underground gas. go electric!!!!

Has the "BP"(ARCO) oil spill made the 2012 destruction of planet Earth a reality?

guitarohol

Is it possible the global corporate community is hiding the devastating truth?
Will the destroyed eco systems cause all of the others to fail?
How many new jobs will be created to get the cleanup done?
Where is the public outrage?
Would a boycott of ARCO gas stations wake up British Petroleum?
Wow! Impressive answers. Seriously, I appreciate all of the answers because they tell me good people are concerned. I award thumbs up to all answers and will choose the best one... Thanks again.

Answer
No, the "BP"(ARCO) oil spill has not made the 2012 destruction of planet Earth a reality.

When someone says, âI want to boycott BP,â the person you wind up hurting is the guy who lives in the community, buys the pages in the high school year book, and the cookies from the girl scouts.

What I think they ought to do instead isâ¦start walking.

In other words, boycotting certain gas stations only stands to harm individual gas station owners, not the larger company. Thatâs because individual stations that have the BP logo on them may or may not buy from a BP gas distributor. More importantly, stations that donât have the BP logo are just as likely to buy from a BP distributor. A host of liberal media outlets, from the New York Times to Time magazine, have pointed out the futility of a boycott.

the only way to really ensure environmental safety is to boycott oil entirely.

But it doesn't even end there. So you buy a plug-in electric car. But that energy you're charging it with could come from a power plant burning natural gas. And, oh wait -- according to BP's website: http://www.bp.com/sectiongenericarticle.do?categoryId=3050046&contentId=3050873

Today, natural gas makes up more than half of BP's energy production, making us the largest producer and supplier in the U.S. In fact, the metro busses here in DC run on natural gas, so perhaps public transportation is out of the question as well. That leaves your bicycle and feet. An inconvenient truth, indeed.

In the real world, no matter how careful you are, accidents happen. There's always the possibility of human error, and sometimes even machines and computers malfunction. So long as an ecological disaster is possible, no matter how improbable, you have to be comfortable with the fact that it could happen.

That's not to say that BP (and probably others) shouldn't have done a better job in identifying more effective disaster containment. It just means that if we want to live in a world where we consume energy and resources in the way we do, we must accept the possibility that, from time to time, things go very badly. We certainly don't have to like it, but we can't pretend that boycotting one company will change very much. o_O

best starter/intermediate moto bike?

Hi, I'm 6'5" and 210 lbs and am looking for a reasonably priced bike to use for some moto (nothing too crazy).

I don't have any experince with dirtbikes, but have ridden mountain trails on mountain bikes & quads for long time and tend to catch on quick. What's a good bike that will have decent power, actually fit me (6'5"), and yet not kill me?

Answer
Here are some bikes that I would go with:

- KTM 530 EXC: Has kick and electric starter, 510 cc, liquid cooled, 6 gears, wont kill ya', big bike for a big guy :)

- Honda CRF 450X: Has electric start and kick start has 13.7 in. ground clearance, 450cc, 3.5 ft tall at seat. Another great bike.

- Yamaha WR 450F: Has electric and kick start, 450cc, both front and rear suspension has 12 in. of travel. Yet again, another great bike.

- Kawasaki KLX 450R: Has electric and kick start, 450cc, liquid cooled, 5 speed, 37 in. seat height, 12.6 in. ground clearance, 12 in. travel on both front and back suspension. 2.1 gallon fuel tank.

- Suzuki RM-Z450: Has electric and kick start, 400cc, front head light, seat is 3 ft. tall, has a 2.6 gallon tank. Not as big, but still a very nice bike.

All of these bike's will fit your height and weight, and all of them are the "off-road" edition's so they are not the "high-performance" get-on-it and-kill-yourself bikes.

Good Luck!!

I have a quad-bike that only turns on if i put it in gear and roll it forward, whats going on??

Can rechargeable AA batteries be used in bike lights?

Wally

The brand is "Planet".

Answer
Yes, that is all I use.

Edit:
Rechargeable batteries can get a memory if recharge them too soon before they run down. I have a light that uses 4 AA batteries and when they start to get dim I turn the light on and run them down even more before I recharge them. Topping the batteries off after every use will shorten their life.

If you have three of those small "button batteries" - they stack on top of each other all facing the same direction - usually with the positive end facing up.

Who will make plans now to purchase an extended range vehicle, electric, or hydrogen car by 2013 (5 years)?

Chi Guy

To greatly reduce US dependency on oil?

At this time the $30,000 extended range vehicle (300 Mpg), Aptera (ready in 2010) is on my list. By then their may be more options available.

Also, FORD has accepted my concept for another type of extended range vehicle. After all of the paper work and waivers I signed, I hope that it comes into fruition within the next five years.

Will you make plans (plan your budget) to purchase a high miledge (80 Mpg or more) OR alt fuel vehicle within the next five years?

Honda a few years ago made a CRF 230L. The thing got 90mpg! Weight 260lbs and came in black.

The new one: Honda CRF 250L weighs in at a porky 320 and gets less mpg.

Suzuki makes the DR 200 SE. It weighs in at 278lbs, but it has electric start. They also make a 400cc version.

Yamaha makes the TW 200. It weighs in at 278 and gets 78mpg.

Kawasaki makes the KLX 250S. It weighs in at 297lbs, gets 70mpg and has electric start.

If you got cash, then look at the KTM 350 EXC. This is a motocross bike with lights. It weighs 241lbs and has electric start.

The other motocross bike with lights is the Husqvarna TE 310R. It weights 247lbs and has electric start.

You got me by a few years. I know I am getting tired of kick starting a motorcycle, so you have to be really tired of it. That means you are going to have to go with the Suzuki or the Kawasaki. If you have the money, the KTM and Husqvarna are top of the line bikes. I got a 1982 Honda XL500R that I have to go through a starting ritual on or she won't fire up. It gets old real fast kick that beast over...lol

I would recommend going to the local dealerships and sitting on a bunch of different bikes. This way you can see what is out there and see what fits you best. Hell, I would look for an old late model 1970's 2-stroke enduro just to piss off the neighbors...lol You can find used bikes on Ebay, Craigslist, CycleTrader and BikeFinds.

You keep going old timer.
