Can the pedaling energy charge the battery of an electric bike?

Can the mechanical energy of pedaling be stored as electrical energy to be utilized later to run the bicycle automatically? I'm not talking about pure electric bikes that need regular charging, and not even about those that you pedal for a while as the bike stands still and then run it on electric power. I mean can you ride a bike and store the mechanical energy simultaneously? Will it be efficient? If so, then are such e-bikes available in the market, and what are they called so that I may Google for them?

Here's the scenario: I need a bicycle for regular commute, may be even for covering long distances. It's not feasible for a layman to pedal continuously for more than 5 to 10 miles. So I'm looking for a bike that you pedal for sometime, and when you're exhausted, you simply flick a button to make it run on electrical power which has been converted and stored from the mechanical energy of pedaling the bike; and then pedal again and auto-ride again and so forth. Will something like that be technically efficient, since you're moving the bike while pedaling as well as storing your spare energy?

Hope I haven't confused you. Thanks :)

Answer
There is already such a motor on the market. The name escapes me right now but it is a hub built into the rear wheel and it costs about $2000... not the Erbike hub motor... I think it is Electricrider or something like that.

To your request, yes, it is possible and a project I am working on right now. No, I can't and won't divulge details but CAN tell you that you'll see it relatively soon and it WILL be expensive- more expensive than a small motorcycle at this point.

By the way... I typically commute 24 miles (one way) to work on a bicycle, no problem. 5-10 mile commute is simple for most committed riders.

Yes but you will go slower because you are turning the motor so basically there is no piont unless you modify it yourself

Answer
I used to have an electric bicycle which I bought on Amazon. I reviewed it here:
http://www.ecohuddle.com/products/e-zip-mountan-trailz-elec-bike/reviews

It was pretty fun to ride. The only problem was that my commute to work is 13 miles, and the range of the battery was only around 10 miles. The weight of the battery made it hard to pedal once the charge was gone. So I just got a regular road bike and also an electric moped. But the electric bike was a fun, cheap option.

Would an electric moped scooter make it 75 miles without dying?

[Oris] [

I work at the United States Post Office and deliver mail to about 50 mailboxes a day on average. The mail route is about 72 miles a day total. Since I am only a part-time employee at the post office, they don't pay for my gas, thus, I end up spending about $200-$270 a month on it. I was seriously considering buying an electric moped scooter or something of the sort. However, how long can they go for before they need to be charged up again? Would the moped handle going about 72 miles Tuesday - Friday? Also, I deliver in a place with winding roads and two very steep hills, would it be able to go up them?

Answer
72 miles is beyond the range of the electric bikes currently available.

is there as compared to petrol bikes & cars

Answer
"Performance" has several factors. We generally think of this on the basis of an IC engine. As a result we tend to think of acceleration, handling and fuel economy. With battery electric vehicles there is also a reference to the vehicle range on a charge. While "range anxiety" is not usually a consideration in an ICE vehicle I do recall a time in the Australian outback where I would have given almost anything for a petrol station.

Generally it takes longer for electrons to flow into a battery than for gasoline to fill a gas tank. Electrons will flow into an ultracapacitor far more quickly and development of ultracapacitors that can hold sufficient charge will resolve the issue. Alternatively if they can be made cheaply enough they could be included with batteries and will extend the life of batteries and enable the vehicle to be quickly charged with energy (from ultracapacitors at "fueling" stations. Presently the best that an electric vehicle can offer is less concentration on fueling. You fuel at home. It takes seconds to start and stop a charge. The rest of the time you can be doing other things. Alternatively you must make special trips to fueling stations where someone must pay attention to the fueling process.

Batteries in an BEV (battery electric vehicle) are typically low in the vehicle. This improves handling as it lowers the center of gravity. Acceleration in electric vehicles is better than ICE vehicles due to full torque starting from 0 RPM in electric motors.1

Under present economic conditions an electric vehicle can save its owner approximately $1000 to $1400 per year in fueling costs in addition to the increase in performance.2 The vehicle except for batteries has a projected life many times that of ICE vehicles, possibly as much as 80 years as compared to the life expectancy of an ICE vehicle of about 10 years. Present batteries have a life expectancy of between 5 to 10 years and may represent 1/2 the investment in the vehicle. Ultra capacitors would have an expected life that exceeds the rest of the vehicle. There is some question about whether the electric vehicle will depreciate very rapidly with little residual value or if the addition of newer battery packs or even ultracapacitors would be like adding an addition to real estate and possibly restore or even exceed the original value of the vehicle. It may be possible that the vehicles will appreciate rather than depreciate like a very few of the classic ICE vehicles. 3

Could a person under 16 operate a motorized vehicle on a roadway or sidewalk?

Culley

my son is 14 going on 15 and I was wondering if it was legal for him to operate one of the following vehicles on the road or sidewalk:
- Go cart
- Moped (less than 50cc)
- Motorbike (less than 50cc)
- electric motorbike
- A bike converted to run off a chainsaw engine

Just for reference we live in Loudon County, Va. in a suburban bordering on rural area. Also if you know any other street or sidewalk legal vehicles he could operate, could you suggest them? I have a price limit of around $1000, but willing to spring for something if you recommend it. Thanks!!

Answer
Motor vehicle laws are local and this forum is National with international visitors. Your best source of information will be you state DMV which may have some FAQ you could check on a website like this one: http://www.dmv.state.va.us/drivers/#teen.asp

You also might look for your specific question relative to your state

Go carts seem to be available for off road use: http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20090707204036AAnwhK5 contact those in business for the relative regulations

Mopeds in Va: http://www.scootrichmond.com/shopping-tools/virginia-moped-and-motorcycle-laws

motorized bicycles at less than 49cc would come under the moped exemptions/restrictions: http://www.motoredbikes.com/showthread.php?36692-Motorized-bikes-in-Virginia

Electric bikes seems to also fall under moped rules: http://www.electricvehiclemall.com/pdf/Virginia_E-Bike_Law.pdf

The fatal exclusion is that your son must be 16.

Where can I buy an electric dirt bike?

SuperNik7

I am 14 years old and I want an electric dirt bike to ride around my neighborhood or the woods. In Ohio where I live, I can`t find any place that sells them, or online besides Zero but they are way too expensive and little big for me. I don`t want a little kid one that is tiny, I want a good one my size. I am 5'5" and looking for something like this. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=scasEb2D4DI

I don`t think I am able to build one either because I have no experience in building electric dirt bikes neither do I have the money to do so. I do not want a gas powered dirt bike because it would require a licence plate, gasoline, and i cant ride it on side walks :/ plus it`s a little loud too.

10pts for best answer! Thanks!

Answer
you dont need a license to ride a off road dirt bike. You just need the off road registration in order to ride on public lands that allow these bikes. Otherwise you can ride all you want on private property. Also an electric one will be a hassle how are you going to charge it when you are away from home in the woods or out and about?

What kind of motorbike should I get?

I'm 14, about 1.68m and 65kgs. I want to get a dirt bike to learn to ride on, and to ride around my farm. I was thinking something like a Honda CRF 230F, or something like that. I have never ridden before, but I'm a fast learner, and am pretty good at driving quad bikes. Also, if it matters at all, I'm a girl.
Please help?

Answer
You could go for a 230... They are big bikes though and have a lot of bottom end power.. but not much top end... great if you want to slowly power up a steep hill.. not so good if you want a bit more speed and power at the top end.. I personally would get like a Suzuki RM 125... they are light, fast, ALOT of power.. especially at top end.. cheaper, easy and cheaper to fix... the 230 is big and heavy.. the upsides of it are electric start and you are less likely to flip it on a steep hill... but for fun (disregarding safety) id go for a light two stroke machine :)... You will probably flip the 125 up a steep hill though.. especially at first.. but yeah.. its alot cheaper and easy to fix.. lighter as well.. just be sure to get the fuel to two stroke oil mix correct and dont use a cheap oil.. it will wear out your piston rings... To be honest ive ridden plenty 230's... i got board real quick.. but if you dont mind a bit less speed and adrenaline.. go for it :) hope i helped.

How can I design an Electric Motor with 10,200rpm or more?

Abdulrahma

First like how many rpm will move a bicycle with a Human weighing 50kg on the bicycle?

Before I ask further questions I will reveal my secret, my teacher gave me an assignment to design a motor which can move a Bicycle instead of pedalling.

My problem is the only motor I ever designed is the simplest type.

Question:

1. Can a motor with 10,200rpm move a motor cycle (It drives Air Pumping Machines )

2. How to design? I have the Heavy Guage Magnet Wire

3. The only source of power which I have to run this device is just 12V and it'll work for 5 minutes probably. Please do you have any better Idea or any other simpler, smaller and better source or some kind of igniting device to make the motor continue running with out burning the out the 12V.

I found some informations on Discovery Channel and but it was more like an advert, it was talking about some modules. It was not clear.

Please, I need helps here.

Thanks.

Answer
There are applications where you need a high-RPM motor, but driving a bicycle is not one of them. Of much more importance is the power required: how fast does the thing need to move up a hill? Once the mechanical power is known, and you have some idea of the nature of the drive train (which will reduce the motor speed down to 100 RPM or so at the wheel), you can pick a power and speed which are appropriate.

Answer
At 21 Years old, insurance is going to be real expensive. At a point in your life when its hard to make decent money, Real smart people watch the value they get for their expenditures.

So, here are some tips:

consider bimodal transportation, using mass transit coupled with bike riding, either along with biking or instead of biking.

carpool and pay more than your share.

Make friends at the retailers you frequent, so they are supportive of you riding your bike.

Don't take your bike to the movies or any event schedule for multiple hours.

Join a bike club where people have learned how to overcome some of these obstacles. Tell your bike shop your goal, ask them to put you in touch trying the same things.

Dress nice, keep your hygiene outstanding. Have a little " travel care kit" for emergencies, (handy wipes, deodorant, even some cologne)

Share with your friends what you are trying to do as an experiment. gain their support.
Barter for combined shopping trips with them, maybe buying a lunch or a couple beers.

Make car shopping trips with them for heavy items, or frozen items. Make it easy and entertaining for them to support your efforts.

If this doesn't work take a cab or public transport for big/heavy items.

Learn bike mechanics and work on friends bikes for barter.

consider an electric assist bike, consider a trailer.

What Are Good Things To Cook in a Camping Stove?

iClimb_199

I am going camping/rock climbing this weekend and I have a Jetboil Flash stove, I would like to know some good meals that you guys cook while camping. And some things that are not really expensive or things that I will have to carry a lot to make.
Thank you guys so much!

Answer
Anything you can cook at home you can cook in the wilds. Bread, cakes, stews, soups, Indian, Chinese, French, anything ...even casseroles....yup, casseroles in an oven.
The oven is a biscuit tin. Nice over a slow burning heap of cinders but a camping stove will do it. Bit pricey on fuel though.
You can bake potatoes round a heap of cinders too wrapped in foil. And meat and fish. Does great for that. Or dig a pit for them and build the fire over it.
Cover the foil-wrapped goodies with an inch or two of earth first to get an even heat.
Pit oven. Good for rabbits, pheasant, partridge, briskets.
You can serve a three course meal on silver trays if you take some silver trays.
Extreme silver service gourmet dining anyone? We've done the ironing.
On bikes.. http://www.oneinchpunch.net/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2007/08/extreme-ironing-05.jpg . ..
From a rope..http://hovanitz.com/images_scc/2003ExtremeIroning.jpg . . . . .

Gourmet meals are easy outdoors.
Camp near a trout stream so you can cool the wine in it. Nice for catching dinner too....coming up.
And you can cook three lots at once if you take a couple of disposable barbeques.
They pack inside the biscuit tin and you don't have to barbeque things on them.
Boil stuff, use a frying pan, or your biscuit tin oven.
Bake bread or a cake in it, roast beef, lamb, fish, rice pudding, soufles (stand it the other way up for that...soufles rise). Fresh apple pie or banana loaf.
Use half what's provided to burn if you want. Empty half of it out and use it later.
Bacon and French omelettes for breakfast with camp bread, and a sweet and sour fish for lunch freshly cooked. Put the roast in the oven so it's cooking while you get up the White Lady or Jacob's Ladder.

Very good for camping is a wok...do a stir fry or steam fish or vegetables in it on a trivet. Fierce heat from a camp stove is better for stir fries than an electric cooker at home...get the heat up the side. Get the wok hot all over, not just the base. Tumble stuff around and everywhere it touches the wok cooks it. Light airy fried rice...not stodgy stuff cooked on the wok base instead of flying all over a very hot wok.
And done in half the time.
At home I use a big petrol stove outside for stir fries....proper stuff then. The electric stove is rubbish for it.
Done in seconds..extreme wok from an expert... hot
http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x75ei4_cuisine-au-wok-au-thai-village-a-au_travel . . . . .
See how quick this egg browns...30 seconds.
Hot wok...light and fluffy then like a French Omelette.
Plenty of space to work in and the shape helps too.
http://www.istockphoto.com/file_closeup/food-and-drink/7249188-frying-an-egg-in-a-wok.php?id=7249188 . . . .
It's just the same on the top of Ben Macdui cooked on a camp stove turned up to full power...no difference.

Heather baked trout is very nice if you're near a trout stream in the mountains.
Run your fingers along the heather stems to clean the leaves off. Just the tops but you soon get a tray full.
Lay the trout over the bed of freshly picked heather tops on a tray and seal it with foil so you don't lose any juices. They keep the heather soft then.
When cooked remove the trout and keep them warm in the oven while you prepare the sauce.
Add the water from the veg and thicken the juices and softly roasted heather tops the quick way with cornflour or properly as a roux sauce....butter and flour required for that but worth the trouble.
Do the same for loin chops or a small shoulder of lamb or a brisket but large briskets are best done overnight in the pit oven. Whisky (no e) in the heather works wonders.
Just take a few herbs and spices in small pots for the exotic things and for flavouring soups and casseroles.
Done it for years on mountains, in deserts and rain forest.
And on boats.
Catch it cook it and eat it. All in twenty minutes. Fresh fish that.
Example....on the rocks

One you might not want to know...Rainforest special breakfast.
You've seen moths round a light bulb. You just need a hotter one.
Put a tarpaulin on the ground when darkness comes.
Light a paraffin pressure lamp and hang it centrally over the tarpaulin.
Go to sleep.
In the morning get the hot oil going.

Fold the tarpaulin so it's got a central channel and pour all the fallen insects that got burnt round the lamp into a wide woven bamboo pan...all 2lbs of them.
4lbs if the night guard remembered to pump the lamp up half way through the night.
That's a bucketful.

Pick through it to get bits of muck and leaves out.
Oil is smoking hot now so pour all the lovely clean insects into it.
Deep fry for one minute or until crisp.
Scoop out, drain, and allow to cool.
While cooling prepare the milk from dry powder.
Distribute the crispy fried insects amongst the breakfast bowls
Pour on milk and add sugar.
Enjoy your delicious bowl of Camp Cornflakes a la Malayasia

Feeling well? O good.
Luncheon in three hours...Snake Cutlets poached in Jungle Juice....hic

How to get a trout without a fishing rod or a net...tickle it.
(Don't get caught doing it)
Lay on the bank and when you see a trout close to the bank where they lay resting and enjoying the scenery and all dozy and dreaming of the big tasty flies coming around when the sun goes down, gently put your hand in the water and under the trout....
...softly softly catchee trouteee
Softly stroke it's belly....hardly touching it....ickle trouty goes all Hmmmm that's nice....ahhh....gone all sleepy...ahh hmmmm..Ssshhhh....you're not there...ssshhh.
Trouty sleepy den? go sleepies....ahhhh
Gotcha!....cruel it is. Not as bad as some animals are....they play all sorts of tricks in nature...some plants do worse than that.
Big rivers you can be less stealthy sometimes...easy on this one....trout's away with the fairies, zonked...but he put it back in the water...public film. Trout tickling isn't legal.

What are some effective but easy ways people can save energy?

Answer
Monitor your electricity use by buying a Kill-A-Watt or other such monitor.

http://the-gadgeteer.com/review/kill_a_watt_electric_usage_monitor_review

'An average household uses about 4300kWh of electricity each year. This results in emissions of over 2 tonnes of CO2 per household, or ¾ tonne per person - just for domestic electricity supply. In comparison, total CO2 emissions per person in the UK are around 10 tonnes, and emissions per person in India are about 1 tonne. Luckily, it is possible to cut domestic electricity use in half with simple energy efficiency measures.
'This table shows how electricity use is divided up in an average house (excluding electric heating):

Lighting 19%
Cold Appliances 18%
Wet Appliancs 15%
Cooking 15%
Consumer Electronics 19%
ICT (computers, etc) 9%

How often should I check my tire pressure for my ATV?

I have a 2008 yamaha grizzly that I ride everyday of the week. How often should I check the tire pressure for it?

Answer
What is the recommended tire pressure as by the owner's manual for this vehicle? The higher the pressure, like in bicycles, the higher the rate of leakage. My bike pressure is 75 psi and I have to add air each and every time I ride it, just prior to starting, I have an electric pump powered from the cigarette lighter outlet. Smaller tires do have higher pressures. If you ride every week and you check the pressure each week and each week the pressure is OK then you can go to checking every two weeks. I would check the tires for damage, cuts, general condition as they do a lot of work over non paved trails before you ride it just to make sure they are OK to ride. Do you carry a spare and tools? Best to be safe before you get going. OK? Good question. Best regards.

I'm thinking of using my bikes orig tire with spockets in the rear and two smaller wheels in the front. Then I'll bolt in a 5 point harness (baby seat) onto the frame. I'll give it some whiskey bars and paint it flat black. Also if anyone could give me pointers on how the thottlw would work, that would be nice too. It will run off of a 12 volt. I've seen this size starter push a road king, so I assume that under light use, the starter could go a long way before burning up. FYI, this will be safe. I'm going to give it a 3 piston brake soft tail brake.
the first guy mentioned "because it has three speeds"...on the washing machine engine. I'd like to contoll the amperage that the motor is getting, so I will be contoling the speed and that is where I'm getting the idea that it will have a longer life span...whata u think?
I can weld.. and I have a welder. I'll stick weld it. It's not going to be pretty, but it will be strong. ...if I do it. Did the skateboard give out, or did you get a lot of life out of it. I know these things burn up fast, we are talking about using 5% of the power..and not for an extended amount of time. I really appreciate everyones responses.

Answer
A starter motor is incredibly powerful but not a great choice as the power requirements to make it run are atrocious, using a large lead acid would probabl only last about 2-3 minutes and lead acid is pretty much your only choice when running this much current. Your better bet is a DC motor that is higher voltage such as those used for electric bike kits,a dryer motor would be useless because its a DC motor. You may find a good powerful DC motor on ebay for less then a hundred bucks.

Which commute bicycle is best for me?

I am looking for a bicycle for a commute to work of about 8-10 miles and would consider an electric model. Can anyone offer any specific models? There is so much out there to choose from. The area where I live can be fairly hilly, so higher number of speeds would be best, and I'm wondering how often there would have to be battery replacement on an electric bike. Any help would be appreciated, preferably from personal experience, but speculation from an experienced rider would also help. Thanks.

Answer
You can get a good electric assist bicycle - for a few THOUSAND dollars. http://www.trekbikes.com/us/en/collections/electric_assist/models/ Or...you could take the initiative to get a nice entry level "performance hybrid" with the gears to pull hills under your own power. And this bike may just come factory equipped with fenders & a rear rack for under $400! You will get & stay fit. Electric assist bicycles make you fat & lazy. What if the charge in the battery runs low or out at the wrong time & in the wrong place? Then you are faced pedaling an extremely heavy bike home under your own power. See these two links...

What electric engine for my Pedal-Electric bike?

Francesco

Dear guys,
I'm going to turn my bike in a Pedal-Electric bike as a DIY work.
I saw there are a lot of motors:
250W
350W
500W
750W
1000W
Can you suggest me the best (couple or single) batteries (Watt and Ah) to bind with these motors?

Answer
You have to first ask yourself what kind of performance is required from your vehicle and what kind of budget you have to work with.

If you have lots of hills in your area of travel and / or think you might be packing quite a load you might want to consider a more powerful motor. The same might be true if you wanted to go faster but then you might want to consider a fairing to cut the wind resistance that is more of a factor at higher speed.

For a more powerful motor you will need to have batteries with a higher capacity for the same distance. Higher battery capacity will increase your distance you can travel. A too powerful motor will tend to drain your batteries unnecessarily.

You may also wish to consider the weight of the components as there may be times that you will be powering the bike without the benefit of the motor. A lighter weight will also extend your range.

I assume this will be your first project of this type. You are therefore likely going to want to gain from the experience while keeping the cost of the education to a minimum. I might suggest you go for a medium range of performance or cost. Good luck with it. If you document the conversion with pictures and a story you could post it on instructables.com or another site.

Kohler SV590 mower engine will not start.?

Have a troy-bilt rider with Kohler SV590S (SV590-0017, see below) that has been stored and unused last season (2012), i.e. stored fall 2011, with stabilizer treated gas. Now won't go. new gas, Fuel flow from tank to carb OK (through fuel filter), fires if carb sprayed with carb cleaner. Solenoid works (don't know if it was stuck at first before I pushed on it a couple of times).

Got the bowl off, ruined the gasket. Local repair shop pointed out that a disk (about 3/8 inch) was missing, probably due to freezing with water in gas. He had kit with gasket, disk and other pieces.

Cleaned carb with carb cleaner, which blew through all the various ports (3x so far). Reassembled, still dies when (jump) starting, but runs for a few seconds with some carb cleaner down the throat. Can hear solenoid click, bowl now has some gas in it when removed.

Each time I made sure that the various interlocks were OK - seat down or bypassed, brake on, PTO (blade) off, and jump started since battery is only good for a few tries if charged overnight.

Note there is no evidence of a fuel pump as shown in the manual as the gas line goes from fuel tank to filter to carburetor.

Now what? Any suggestions for troubleshooting & fix ups so that my son doesn't have to use the push mower again? Can't afford repair shop diagnostics - unemployed

(will probably have to replace battery again if this thing starts)

Kohler Courage 19 Engine SV590S (electric start) Spec no SV590-0017 (MTD) SN 3605950363 (found manuals online including service manual 20 690 01 Rev. G)
Troy-Bilt Model 6605 SN 1C026H20244 Manufactured 3/2006 13AX60TG766 (found manuals online)

BTW: Also when moving carburetor assembly noticed an extra spring on the ground - about 1 5/8 inches long with squared hook at one end and rounded "eye" at other, narrower coil at hook end to wider coil at "eye" end. Looks brand new and mower is 2006 so suspect spring is from something else, like a new bike that was being worked on a few days earlier. Also not in found in any of the parts diagrams related to the fuel & throttle assemblies. Hopefully it is not from the mower. Looked at Troy-Bilt mowers with Kohler engine in store with similar throttle/choke assembly and do not see any evdience of this spring.

I have the following online manuals obtained online over the last few days. Note that file names listed below have been prefixed with descriptive names

Answer
I think that you still have something in the carburetor that needs to come out. Sometimes it is difficult to get the things clean. I use a chem dip type cleaner that I got from the auto parts store specifically for carburetors. Comes in a gallon can for around $20.00 but last for years and is good for a lot of parts. You take the carb apart and soak for an hour or so, rinse it with water and blow it dry with compressed air. Works first time every time, except once on a outboard motor, but that is a different story. It is possible to get them cleaned out with spray carb cleaner once they are off and taken apart but it doesn't work as well as the soaking cleaner. When taking things apart that are somewhat complicated, a digital picture or two can save your bacon in the home stretch. Anyway, what you describe sounds to me like a dirty carburetor.

What CC dirtbike is right for me?

Kody

I am almost 16 and I weigh about 130 lbs. I am 5ft 6in. i dont want a small bike, but i dont want it to be too big. i was thinking the seat should be about 39 in from the ground little more little less. help me out?

Answer
first thing is if you want a motocross dirt bike there are 2 strokes and 4 strokes. think of a 2 stroke as being half the cc of a 4 stroke with the same power.
so a 125cc 2stroke to 250 cc 4 stroke are similar
and a 250cc 2 stroke to 450cc 4 stroke are similar

the 125-250 class motocross bikes have about the same seat height as the 250-450 class motocross bikes, 35-40 inches.
a 125-250 class motocross bike is a good bike for a rider with some experience or at least willingness to learn. a 250cc-450cc motocross bike is much better for an experienced rider with a good health care coverage plan. they are not for beginners.

so if you want a motocross bike with a 39" seat height you can choose between any 125-250 or 250-450 motocross because the seat heights are all close to the same and offer adjust-ability through lowering the rear shock anyway. one of my friends is about your size and rides a 450cc 4 stroke no problem, but i am 6'2 and on his bike i have to lean over to put a foot flat on the ground.

i think youll be ok with a 125-250cc motocross bike if you have some motorcycle skills. plus youll be able to grow into the bike instead of out grow it like a smaller bike. if you want a bigger bike with a good amount of power, but not a monster dirtbike a 125-250 motocross might be just what your looking for.

one thing you need to consider is that a 250-450 cc motocross bike will likely be a kick start only bike, and are extremely hard to kick start in most cases. and a 125-250cc motocross will be far from easy also.

if you want electric start you can consider a trail bike in the 200cc +- class. they are not as racy and powerfull as the motocross bikes but tend to be more mellow for long rides and you can find them with electric start more easily than a motocross bike. they have enough power to keep you interested for sure. they are usually more reliable and require less maintenance in most cases too. the seat heights will be about 35 inches give or take an inch and in most cases are adjustable up or down like the motocross bikes. they are usually A LOT cheaper too. they sometimes if not always are heavier than a motocross bike with a similar engine size. They often have a headlight which is a huge plus for off road riding, but you can get trail versions of many motocross bikes too, they are just harder to find and will be more expensive. i had a motocross bike for a trail bike with no headlight and i just taped a strong flashlight to my handlebars or helmet. not the best but it works in an emergency.

here is a site link to Yamaha's 2011 dirt bike lineup and it include motocross and trail bikes for you to have a look at. there is a lot of specs and info plus pictures. have a look at seat heights, bikes with headlights, the weight of bikes, etc to help you make a decision on which bike will suit your needs. if you look around at the different brands websites you can find out what dirt bikes they make and the specs of each.

if i where to recommend two trail bikes from yamaha for you they would be the ttr 230 for a trail bike, or the wr250f if you want to spend more for a trail oriented motocross bike.
in the motocross race bike 125-250 class you could choose a yz125 or yz250f. i dont think with your size and weight you will be comfortable with the power of a 250-450cc bike.

I am looking for an electric bike for exercise for under $500. I want electric because my area is very hilly and I want to get exercise but I'm just not in shape enough to make it up the hills without some help. Ideas for the best in my price range?

Answer
Forget the electric bike they are hard to pedal and using the motor wont give you any exercise. If you want exercise get a used stationary bike off of Craig's list or better yet go to the local bike shop and get a good hybrid bike. It will take time to be able to climb hills, if you have to get off and walk.

I'm thinking about buying a Toyota Prius. What is your experience with them?

christians

I'm about to buy my first car. I will put $6,000 down-payment but before I do this I want to make sure that the Prius is worth buying.

1) Does it really save you gas? Is it worth it?
2) When you drive it does it feel comfortable?
3) Does it break down often?
4) Have you had problems with the battery?
5) Is the car nice to drive?
6) Is it roomy?
7) Do you love it?
I'm getting such great answers. Please people give me more of your experience.

Answer
I get 50 mpg in mixed freeway/city driving from March to November, 60 mpg when I drive slower. Drops to around 43-46 in Michigan winter (gas is blended differently in winter, plus the heater causes engine to run even when the car is stopped). Driving 500 miles on a 10-gallon fillup is mighty handy. Twenty Priuses produce as much pollution as one ordinary car. Unfortunately, this is the only high-mileage vehicle made. The Honda Insight is no longer made, and all other hybrid vehicles are 'performance' vehicles or just not hybridized properly.
It's very comfortable, quiet, and has more rear seat legroom than any other car I've ever ever seen, big or small (except the Maybach). The only noise depends on the road surface; it's just about as quiet at 80 mph as it is at 20, unless the road is rough. There is some extremely minor wind noise at 80. And when you go downhill, it's quiet, since the engine shuts off (but even with the engine running, it's very hard to hear it). Ground clearance is 5 inches, so if you have a steep driveway with a nasty bump at the bottom, go slow and at an angle or you'll scrape the front end. Many cars are like this.
I've had two warranty claims; the dealer replaced the pushbutton for the lower glove box (there are two glove boxes) after a passenger carelessly scratched it with her shoe, and the rear cargo cover was replaced after I pulled on it too hard and popped a spring. Hurt me. No charge.
Traction batteries go for about $300 on eBay, pulled from wrecked cars, and the dealer gets $200 for an old one to recycle, so you can do the math. If a cell should fail, they replace the cell, not the whole darn battery pack of 170 cells. I've gone over 50,000 miles (of pretty hard driving) and don't expect to have any issues with the battery. The scuttlebutt is that it will outlast the car. I believe it. The only people worried about the battery don't drive a Prius.
It's a real dream to drive. Everything is very intuitive. Responsive steering and braking, traction control, ABS. My only complaint is that I can't gun the engine and rip-tear into traffic if there's a lot of snow on the ground, as the traction control kicks in to slow me down (can't turn it off). Throttle is not connected to the engine; it controls computers that change electricity and gasoline flows.
It's quick (not sports-car quick, but quicker than any other car I've owned, and I'm 55 yrs. old). Torque is 295 ft-lbs, more than most trucks. Electric motors have full torque even when they're not turning, and the engine doesn't have to rise to a screaming pitch and downshift twice just to pass another car -- it just takes off right now! You should not pull a trailer, but a bike rack is fine (and they sell small trailer hitches). Max load is just under 1200 lbs. If you put three full-size guys in the back seat, the middle one will probably sit a little forward. Three ordinary people will fit. A really big guy fits fine up front.
It is very roomy. The back seat has headroom that prevents anyone over 6' 2" from sitting comfortably for long trips. The windshield is huge, with minor blind spots on each side at the 'A' pillar, but I've gotten used to it. The rear view seemed a little cramped at first, but I've gotten used to that, and it's fine. Headlight glare from the car behind me is usually blocked by a feature between the two rear glasses (nice), and the lower one lets me see a car behind me very easily when parking (double-nice). The passenger's windshield wiper pivots on a special hinge that keeps it out of the driver's vision. (These guys thought of <everything>.) There's a hidden drawer under the console. It has explosive seat belts to tighten them snug against you if the air bags pop. Cabin air goes through a HEPA filter (I just vaccuum mine). The DVD navigation is intuitive and easy to use. Center touchscreen display for radio/discs/tape (6 discs in the dash), heater-A/C, navigation, calendar with notes, phone, maintenance records, and more, so dash is uncluttered but still has more features than you will ever use. Consider getting the hardware hack from ecoastaltech.com to let (the passenger) make map changes while moving. Bluetooth cellphone turns into a speakerphone and copies my phonebook to the car. It has voice commands for everything you can think of, and a few hundred more. All important controls are on the steering wheel. Leave the headlights on all the time -- they turn off when you Power down and exit the car. Get the 'loaded' version. Two 12-volt outlets, but no cigar lighter or ashtray, but you can buy one for one of the cup holders (two in front, two in rear). I put an MP3 player with an FM transmitter plugged into the 12 volt tap, all inside the console. No factory sunroof. New models have leather seats available, and a standard backup camera that shows in the center display when you put it in Reverse. I put my remote in a little velvet bag and stuff it in my sock each morning; no sense keeping it in my pocket, since I never take it out. The front of the car is so short you can't see it. Maintenance is just like any ordinary car, but it goes 100,000 miles on a radiator coolant change. There's no transmission or shifting. Turning radius is VERY small. No power steering pump or belt (power steering and air-conditioning are electric). No starter, starter relay, solenoid, or alternator and belt. You cannot cover a small grille on the extreme right side of the rear seat, as that's the air intake to cool the battery if it's worked hard.
I love it. I plan on keeping this one for 10 years, giving it to my son, and getting another one.

What is the best way to purchase a moped / electric scooter?

best brand electric bikes on Brand New Lithium Battery Electric Bicycle Moped Scooter Foldable E ...
best brand electric bikes image

StraightBa

I have decided to buy a moped (or electric scooter) to use casually around my neighborhood (not for extremely long hauls).

Since I don't know much about mopeds, the only place I went to was vespa.com. Most of their options are extremely expensive. I'm looking to spend no more than $1,000.

I'm looking for recommendations about obtaining one. Are their other good companies besides vespa? Are their moped/dealer shops that I could visit locally to actually see the different options.

Should I go and test drive one, like I do with cars? Or is this something I should simply buy online (and go that route).

Any other things I should be looking for?

Answer
Mopeds have pedals, scooters have floorboards.
Vespas are scooters, expensive scooters. You can get around just as well on other brands like Kymco, Genuine, Piaggio, Yamaha, Sym, and Honda but you aren't going to get any of those new for $1000.
You might be able to get a Chinese scooter new for that but even that is doubtful since scooter prices have gone up quite a bit. Also from what I hear many of shops are out of scooters these days so you might want to call around to see who has what.
I read a good review on a Velocity electric scooter but I don't know the cost.
As far as mopeds you might call some bicycle stores and see if they carry electric bikes. I have never seen one in a scooter or motorcycle dealer.
You might be able to find something used on Craigslist.
Other things....
Check into what your local laws are for licensing. In CA we have to have a M2 license even for mopeds. Some states don't require anything for up to 50cc scooters.
Figure out how fast you will need to go before you buy something. Don't get a scooter that top ends at 30 when you have to get on roads where traffic goes 45.
If you want to get more info on drop ship (online) scooters check out the scootdawg forum. A lot of the people there own Chinese scooters and might be able to point you towards better brands and dealers.

Information on purchasing an electric bicycle?

I'm thinking of getting an electric bicycle (to save on fuel costs)--does anyone have any personal information on electric bikes or recommendations on which brand?
Would also like to hear good/bad experiences any of you have had and especially what to avoid when purchasing one.

Answer
Congratulations on considering your ebike purchase. It is one of the best transportation decisions you can make; you will be healthier and have more money in your pocket.

A recent case study:
An 8 mile commute to work, for a employee..desk job,. works out at the gym twice weekly.

has stoplights, hilly terrain. usually picks up odds and ends at store on way home from work.

fairly dry climate, 6 month fairly comfy riding season; mornings 45F or better, afternoons seldom above 90F, usually mid 80's.

married, 1 child, two car family. : Driving in town 9000 miles per year on car #2. Going to cut that in half --down by 4500 miles --- most trips under 10 miles each way.

Car averages about 15 mpg in town so that is an even 300 gallons of gas, figure 3.50/gal... $1050.

not taking the car to work much any more, will save about $100 for six months insurance.

that's $1150. plus an oil change or two,. for $1200.. maybe a little more. Also looses about 5 pounds per month.

what can one getfor that?
You can get a top rated ebike kit a Bionx 350 w 36v NIMH kit for $1200!
A Bionx NIMH 36v 350w Ebike kit, judged one of the Best in the USA, to go on Your bike for $100 labor, or do the work yourself and save the$100.

http://www.birdrv.com/bionx-p350-electric-bicycle-kit.php
Dealer in Denver with service, parts, test rides, outstanding support.

Ok another well rated Ebike is the EZEE brand, Try Seattle or Oceanside:
http://www.electricvehiclesnw.com/main/contact.htm Cost a little more, but comes on a bike.

I support both of these and they are great in all respects.

East coast-- another good guy:
http://nycewheels.com/

What are the horror stories I hear:

People that dont respect that these are Electric ASSIST bicyles and require you to pedal (but not hard), they treat them like mopeds, and they dont last. (however there are many people that understand that these are e-assist bikes and get 8 + years out of them)

People that overestimate their mechanical ability and try to install complicated kits themselve- yet they could not change a tire.

People that get scammed on ebay by trying to get a bargain on something they know little about.

So good luck. If you do your research, honest about your needs, get references about the bike and the dealer before you buy, you will be happy.

there will be an ebike race In Portland OR. at the end of May. Email me for more info.

How can I make a relatively cheap motorized bicycle with either electric or gas motor?

Krazy Karl

I'm looking far into the future for a summer project and am thinking of trying to put together a motorized bicycle from home parts. I've been searching the net trying to find some guidance, just so I don't kill myself, but I'm having difficulties. I'm searching for ANY help, plans, possible parts, past experience, anything. Thanks!

Karl

Answer
Motorizing isn't the problem. The problem is that there isn't a bicycle out there that is safe at a speed faster than what you can pedal and mostly because of the poor quality of the brakes with which they're equipped. When I was stationed in 'Nam they had some hybrid bicycles which you started off pedaling and then pulled a lever which dropped a small motor down so the small wheel on the motors output shaft contacted the front wheel of the bike and turned it. Even though it had a better braking system than a standard bike I saw a lot of young ladies (which was mostly what rode them) taking some real nasty spills when they couldn't stop in time at intersections.
Also a buddy of mine, back in the early 50's had a motor bike which was built by the Schwinn Corp. It used a belt drive on the rear and had decent brakes, similar to a motor cycles.

Is it possible to put a motor on an ordinary bicycle?

Q. I have an ordinary 12-speed bicycle. Do they make electric motors for these kind of bikes? It looks like gas prices will be out of control this coming year, like 2008 all over again, and I would like to drive my car as little as possible. I like bike riding, but if I have to go a long distance quickly, I would like to have a motor as well. What would one of these cost, if they are available? How fast can they go?

Answer
Bicycles with electric motors are no faster than good lightweight bikes that run on pedal power alone, and they have limited range between charges. For the price of a good electric conversion kit, you could buy a bicycle that would have better performance. Remember, the more you ride, the stronger your legs will be, mechanical aids wear out, and battery packs have to be replaced.

How does an electric bicycle work?

Kavi Dessa

When my dad first mentioned them to me, I though that they would work just about the same as an electric scooter. But when I actually looked it up, I saw that they still had pedals and looked almost exactly the same as any other bike. So where does the electric part come in if you're still pedaling? How does it work?

Thank you kindly.
:)

Answer
The motor is connected either thru the chain drive or is a part of the wheel (hub motor).

some models are throttle based where you push the throttle more, and more power goes to the motor (Power on Demand 'POD'), or, power can be initiated by a sensor that detects you are pedalling pretty hard, so it sends power to the motor to help out (pedelec).

On some models you must pedal, (pedalec) others you have your choice whether or not to pedal. Even moderate pedalling helps with the performance and range.

If an ebike follows the U.S. Federal law HR 727, it is legal where bikes are legal:

To be legal in most states, an e-bike must have less than 750 watts of power, pedals that really work, 2 or 3 wheels (not 4 wheels) and the motor should cut out at 20mph.

turn key ebikes can be purchased from Giant bicycle, Target online, and other places depending on your locale. there are many kit vendors; Cyclone is a chain drive, Bionx is a fancy high end hub motor, and Crystalyte is a value hub motor, along with other companies.

The motor enables people that have physical limitations to still ride and manage hills and headwinds. It also allows people to show up for work a lot less sweaty and allows an alternative to car transportation while still getting decent exercise. Prices for decent stuff starts at about $400, and goes up to almost $10K for an electric enclosed trike that can virtually replace a car. Properly chosen many better ebikes have a range of 25+ miles before having to recharge the batteries.

I am 60 years old and can bring home 40lbs of groceries on my ebike, and can use it to go most anyplace in my medium sized (500,000 population) town.

some newer ebikes are quite lightweight and bicycle like.

Ebikes increase health, decrease pollution, decrease auto traffic, save transportation dollars and consume no petroleum. REcharging takes about 4 hours and costs about 10 cents.

turn key ebikes can be purchased from Giant bicycle, Target online, and other places depending on your locale. there are many kit vendors; Cyclone is a chain drive, Bionx is a fancy high end hub motor, and Crystalyte is a value hub motor, along with other companies.

I need an electric bike for parking issues(tickets)..I am able to spend up to 400 but i also want a good looking bike hahaha..anyone know of a place in or close to the philadelphia area?

Answer
Good electric bikes start at around $1500 and go up from there. Even decent conversion kits are about $1000. Anything lower than that price point will be a slow, disappointing, heavy pile of junk.

Just sell your car, you aren't responsible with a motor vehicle anyway.
