How long and how often should I trickle charge my motorcycle battery for?

best battery for bikes on Cygolite: Halogen Bike Lights
best battery for bikes image

Jason

I've bought a new battery for my bike. I only use it once a week for commuting to and from work which is only about 4 miles, so isn't really long enough for the alternator to charge the battery up.
So during the week when I'm not using it, how long should I charge my battery for and how often?

Answer
Trickle charge it with 1-2 amps for a couple of hours every two days. You don't want to overcharge it, as it will boil it dry,and ruin it. Or remove the neg cable from the battery, when not in use, or install a switch which will disconnect the power completely, when not in use.

Do you need a battery if you have a kick start?

Shane

Im about to buy a motorcycle and the guy said it could use a new battery but this bike dosnt really need a battery because its kickstart and it could do everything fine without one? Is this correct what does he mean?

Answer
If it's a street-bike, it needs the battery to run the lights and other electrical accessories. Otherwise, they will dim a nd brighten according to the RPM of the motor.
As others have mentioned, only a bike with magneto ignition will have an ignition spark without the battery. And many bikes will suffer damage to electrical components if run without a battery.

If I pair two 36v electric wheel hub bikes together, with a frame of some sort, (a quad bike) will I get the equivalent of 72v to go uphill? These hills require 72v for electric bikes. Or will it be just two 36v bikes coming to a stop 1/4 the way up the hill? Is it like two batteries in parallel, or two batteries in Series??? Anybody?

what do people look for in an electric bike?

Matthew

I am designing an electric bike for commuters to use day in, day out. I am asking you guys who live on the outskirts of cities to give me what you want in the perfect personal transport. This product is made for the masses and made by the masses. Any answers will be appreciated and taken into account. Thanks all!
May i add that this is a conceptual design project :)

Answer
I've been working on the same thing for different clients for years, but I'll tell you what things designers are trying to overcome:

1) Weight. The current technologies simply do not allow an e-bike that weighs under 50 pounds. A good target weight should be in the mid-20s;

2) Battery size. The size of even the smallest battery right now takes up precious space for carrying other stuff, and if the battery gets too small the range is reduced tremendously. Right now, Mitsubishi probably makes the best battery/motor combination;

3) Loaded range. Put a rider and 35 pounds of gear on the bike and ride it up a 5% grade, 1 mile long hill two or three times. Nuff said.

what engines are capable to run 100% on hho, h2, hydrogen gas for vehicles?

David Schw

Is there ideal engines for the conversion? I want to construct a van that holds enough hydrogen to operate 200 miles power day ++ and cover it with solar panels & a bracket to hold a1,500 watt windmill. Ideally,I would use an AC outlet to produce the hydrogen but with added options to make its own too. This is the ultimate bug out vehicle. I will probably wonder off into the wilderness forever once its complete.

Answer
Sounds like an interesting project. There are some car companies that make hydrogen internal combustion engines/cars but they are hugely expensive and conversions from gas to hydrogen has some problems. A propane engine design might be suitable for adaptation to hydrogen. The fuel/air mixture is much different for hydrogen requiring special carbs and engine timing changes and hydrogen embrittlement of engine parts or exhaust can lower engine life and other parts.
Storing hydrogen is another issue as it requires a large volume of gas under very high pressures to have a suitable range you're looking for.....special tanks, lines, valves, refueling, etc..

There are some new methods coming out to make on-demand low pressure hydrogen gas using chemical processes like sodium silicides or cobalt catalysts which could alleviate some of the problems with onboard storage/use. You can also make hydrogen from urine which has twice the hydrogen molecules as water and splits apart in electrolysis at lower voltages..

Chinese Jonway Scooter 50cc backfired and won't start?

Mike

I have a 2012 Jonway 50cc Chinese Scooter and just hit 1300 miles. I was having battery issues and was relying on the kickstarter. I was riding in the rain and was having some issues with the idling and it stalled. I kickstarted and got it up and running again when finally I heard a sound that sounded like fluid and was followed closely by a gunshot-like sound. The electricity gave out, lights, instrumentation, etc. and it would not start back up again and I was luckily close enough to walk the bike home.

I tried jump-starting it today and it did not want to turn over with the kick starter or electric starter. I had no sound whatsoever out of the electric starter where usually I will hear it trying to start. Also the spark plug was apparently loose, but I rettached it although the bronze or gold tip that sits in the ignition wire is missing the clip and it is not sitting tightly although there was definitely contact and it should have started up.

Any help would be appreciated as I rely on this for transportation and am just wondering what the list of parts to get would be.

Thanks!
Also the person that I purchased from had removed the "restrictor plate" which I believe was a restrictor tube that sits in the air intake case because there is no tube inside there. Apparently this can cause backfiring and all sorts of problems because there is a disproportionate amount of air going in to the engine.
I can get a whole new engine for about $200 on this so if that can save on labor I'd just drop a new one in there.
Thank you for the detailed answer, what I mean by not turning over is that the electric starter will not click whatsoever but the kickstarter will move and it sounds the way a lawnmower does that won't start when you can pull the cord but it won't start...

Answer
You should at least hear a click or something from the starter. What is your definition of turn over? Do you mean that the engine spins but does not fire. Or do you mean that the engine is completely locked? You can not move the kick starter and all the electric start does is click.

If the engine spins but does not start it could be any number of things. You say the gold cap is missing from the spark plug. What happens if you remove the spark plug, put it back on the wire, lay it on a metal piece of the engine, and spin the engine over? There should be a strong bluish white spark between the electrodes. No spark and the engine will not run. You may just simply need a new spark plug.

You should never ever jump start a scooter or motorcycle. Bad things can happen. It is very easy to fry the ignition system when you jump start. If the ignition box is fried the spark plug gets no spark. No spark and there is no way the engine will start.

If the engine is locked, you have some serious internal mechanical issues. You may want to look into that new engine.

You mention the disproportionate amount of air entering the engine. This is technically called running the engine lean. This is bad. Then the person removed this restrictor tube, he should have installed a larger main fuel jet in the carburetor. When the engine runs lean it can literally burn a hole in the piston. Molten metal can seize the piston rings to the cylinder wall. If this is what happened, look into that new engine.

The backfire could also cause the camshaft to jump time. However, there are usually other mechanical issues that go along with this.

What do you think about people riding their bikes instead of driving cars?

well i am 21. i dont have my license. i dont want a car unless it doesnt need oil. i dont mind riding my bike, but some places i cant ride my bike. i dont know how to chain up my car when i'm going to the mall, movies, or the grocery store. i feel in ways i am trapped into buying a car. anyone else feel like this? riding my bike helps with saving gas, but i can't ride my bike 30-40 miles. i can't ride my bike to work either.

Answer
At 21 Years old, insurance is going to be real expensive. At a point in your life when its hard to make decent money, Real smart people watch the value they get for their expenditures.

So, here are some tips:

consider bimodal transportation, using mass transit coupled with bike riding, either along with biking or instead of biking.

carpool and pay more than your share.

Make friends at the retailers you frequent, so they are supportive of you riding your bike.

Don't take your bike to the movies or any event schedule for multiple hours.

Join a bike club where people have learned how to overcome some of these obstacles. Tell your bike shop your goal, ask them to put you in touch trying the same things.

Dress nice, keep your hygiene outstanding. Have a little " travel care kit" for emergencies, (handy wipes, deodorant, even some cologne)

Share with your friends what you are trying to do as an experiment. gain their support.
Barter for combined shopping trips with them, maybe buying a lunch or a couple beers.

Make car shopping trips with them for heavy items, or frozen items. Make it easy and entertaining for them to support your efforts.

If this doesn't work take a cab or public transport for big/heavy items.

Learn bike mechanics and work on friends bikes for barter.

consider an electric assist bike, consider a trailer.

how do i find out the laws on importing goods from china to the usa?

randybates

i want to buy electric bikes in china, and sell them in america

Answer
You need a customs broker. They know relevant regulations for each commodity. Chances are the only things you'll need to confirm regulation-wise are (1) whether you need to pay duties to Uncle Sam when you bring electric bikes in from China; and (2) whether electric bicycles require UL (underwriter's laboratories) approval.

For info on duties check the US International Trade Commission's Tariff Information Center at the following link:
http://www.usitc.gov/tata/hts/bychapter/2005_supp.htm
See chapter 87 "Vehicles other than railway or tramway rolling stock, and parts and accessories thereof"

Frankly if you don't know the regulations governing the importation of electric bicycles from China into the U.S., then that means you probably have no experience in this industry, and there are more important questions you should be asking, such as:
Who is your target customer and how will you get their attention?
Who are your main competitors?
Why will your target customers buy your bikes and not your competitors'?
What advantage do you have selling electronic bicycles that your competitors don't have?
How will you find suppliers?
Do you have the capital to buy bikes, ship them to the U.S., inventory them, and invest in marketing to sell them?

Keep in mind that suppliers in China only sell large quantities. Unless you are prepared to import full container loads of electric bicycles there is no point buying direct from China. You should first find a domestic wholesaler or importer to buy from, that way you can get your business started with a low capital investment. Your COGs (cost of goods) will be higher, but you won't need to tie up cash in inventory. Focus on developing your customer base and growing sales. As long as you at least break even you are doing great. Then, once you have built up a customer base and have sufficient demand, you can think about finding a supplier in China. When you're at that point give me a call and I can help you - 212-847-7175. Good luck!

Can the pedaling energy charge the battery of an electric bike?

the best electric bikes on Best Buy to Start Selling Electric Bikes Next Month : TreeHugger

Can the mechanical energy of pedaling be stored as electrical energy to be utilized later to run the bicycle automatically? I'm not talking about pure electric bikes that need regular charging, and not even about those that you pedal for a while as the bike stands still and then run it on electric power. I mean can you ride a bike and store the mechanical energy simultaneously? Will it be efficient? If so, then are such e-bikes available in the market, and what are they called so that I may Google for them?

Here's the scenario: I need a bicycle for regular commute, may be even for covering long distances. It's not feasible for a layman to pedal continuously for more than 5 to 10 miles. So I'm looking for a bike that you pedal for sometime, and when you're exhausted, you simply flick a button to make it run on electrical power which has been converted and stored from the mechanical energy of pedaling the bike; and then pedal again and auto-ride again and so forth. Will something like that be technically efficient, since you're moving the bike while pedaling as well as storing your spare energy?

Hope I haven't confused you. Thanks :)

Answer
You will have to pedal extra hard to keep the bike going and to charge the battery. It could be done, but it would be easier and more efficient to pedal a regular (lighter) bike.

Maybe you could use a large solar panel to power the bike

Answer
Yes, it can!

Electric cycles are readily available. You normally charge them from a mains supply and then you can part-pedal / part-drive them on your commute. You can often adjust the amount of assistance to be supplied by the motor enabling you to go faster but less far or vice versa. If you want to pedal the bike and store 50% (say) of your energy for later you can do so but you will be doing double the work when pedalling, so your commute will be, so to say, twice as hard or half as fast and take twice as long. That doesn't seem to make much sense, especially since electric cycles are heavy and pedalling them (with no motor assistance) even without any of your energy going to storage, will be quite slow and tediously tough.

What an electric cycle does do is re-charge the batteries when you go downhill giving you back at least a good fraction of the energy expended in climbing up. But that produces a braking effect and the speed of descent is reduced. What inevitably goes lost is the energy taken by friction and wind resistance. Storing and using later is also subject to a degree of loss.

In short, if you don't want to use a commercial energy source to "fuel" your bicycle, get a conventional one - you'll do vastly better.

Norway Orthopedic Devices Investment Opportunities, Analysis and Forecasts to 2017 - new market research report:
The LEV industry is growing fast, with greatest strength in China today, but also clearly emerging fast in the rest of the world. Up until the last couple of years, ebike sales were concentrated in China, Japan, and the EU. In the last few years, nearly every nation has bought ebikes from China, and in some cases, the volumes are now significant. Sales will reach 130 million yearly before 2025, make it one of the world's largest industries. The 206 page report encompassing over 70 brands gives forecasts of sales numbers, unit prices and total market value for 2011-2021. 13 market drivers are balanced against many negative factors that are discussed in the report, which has 69 figures and tables and detail on standards and legislation.

LEVs are one of the largest and fastest growing electric vehicle markets. A Light Electric Vehicle LEV is a land vehicle propelled by an electric motor that uses an energy storage device such as a battery or fuel cell, has two or three wheels, and typically weighs less than 100kg. Most LEVs are and will remain ebikes. These are Power on Demand bikes controlled with a throttle. A significant percentage of ebikes sold are scooters in that they have the driver's feet rest on a platform - they are not straddled by the driver.

Today, the LEV industry is dominated by large bicycle companies, due to their access to distribution. We explain why, in the future, these companies will face major competition from, and may be pushed aside by car, motorcycle, and car parts companies. Supply chains for motors, batteries, chassis parts, and nearly every LEV component exist in Asia, primarily in China, Taiwan, Japan, and newly emerging South Korea. We reveal where the highest profits will be obtained in future and the opportunities in components as these change with lithium-ion batteries of several generations and supercapacitors being increasingly employed, for example. The more demanding future technical requirements of users and standards are investigated.

Adjoining sectors are also discussed such as heavy electric motorcycles and the bigger sector of mobility vehicles for the disabled, where ten year forecasts are presented. New crossover vehicles between LEVs and these sectors are presented.

Which yamaha dual sport bike is better?

Vertigo

I was looking the 2011 WR250X, the 2011 WR250R and the 2012 TW200. I prefer the TW2000 cause is cheaper and dont know it looks nice. But i will like to know the pros and cons of each one, nore concentrated in the TW200. Thanks

Answer
Rule out the wr250x as its street tires will not be good off road.

The wr250r is a dual sport, powerful for a 250 and tall, so you will want to sit on one and see if it fits. While it won't be too comfortable on a highway it is fast enough for one. It would be a good off road bike based on the power and tires.

The TW200 has been sold for years so its easy to find one used, though I think very early models had kick starting only, so check the one you are looking at has electric start. It will be about half the price of the 250, less if you are buying used. Its 200cc engine is not very powerful, so it will not be fast enough for highway driving (top speed is around 60mph). It will be ok on easy trails, but a bit underpowered on anything with steep hills. If it doesn't matter to you about the higher speed and power of the 250, or the 250 is too tall, then I think the TW200 would be a good in town and trail bike, and fine for country riding, and will get really good gas mileage.

How to remove scratch from my bike?

sourabh

I recently bought a Yamaha FZ-16. Lately when I checked my bike I saw that it had got a scratch for some other vehicle, probably from the foot rest of a scooter, on the silencer.I really love my bike and the scratch is irritating me. Is there a way to remove the black mark caused by the paint of the scooter's footrest paint or will the yamaha service center person can/will do anything about it or to get rid of the mark? I like my stuff, flawless. Please comment!

Answer
if it is on the alloy cover and is just a paint mark try a rag soaked in carb cleaner and gently rub the mark away.
If it is actually a scratch in the alloy
first try a light rub with a scotch pad.
You can buy lap wheels for your electric drill, get a cloth callico mop and some block french chalk and polish the whole surface.
alternately buy a new silencer cover.
Don't be too het up as in about six weeks you'll be buying an after market slip on can to make it sound better and perform a little better and improve the looks of the bike

For the same bicycle product/concept there are many production phases to be accomplished until a market product get alife. During these phases different prototypes are built if required.

Answer
There can be a lot of difference. A working prototype is often cobbled together by a mechanic. A market prototype is more refined , and is an element in test marketing.
I have had experience with building prototype bicycles, and I have a few photos to share:

This is Type 3, which has a fairing made of Kevlar (Dupont trademark aramid fiber) built in 1987:
http://i134.photobucket.com/albums/q119/hotbike/00000008-1.jpg

After testing it on people, other suggestions were taken into consideration. The next photo is of the Type 9, built in 1993, and made of fiberglass. The fairing is smaller because testing the larger fairing in Florida revealed that the riders got to hot, it blocked off air. Also, the newer fairing has a storage compartment big enough for 12 x 12ounce beverage cans. And the new design has the fairing mounted to the frame, not the handlebars, so it is much more stable. This bike cost $270.00 to build and sold (Dutch Auction) for $1,200.00.
http://i134.photobucket.com/albums/q119/hotbike/00000023-1.jpg

This photo is of the Type 7, which I did not sell. The fairing was designed by the same women who designed the Type 9:
http://i134.photobucket.com/albums/q119/hotbike/photo003.jpg

I skipped using the number eight, because , like a game of pool, I want the eightball to be last.

Since building these bikes , there has been a lot of electric bikes going into production in China, some 16 million per year. So I would like to cut my losses by bringing in bikes from China. Maybe I will continue to build my own on a one-time, custom basis, but the consumer is only concerned about cost.

What is the process and ingredients used to day to make ice cream commercially?

(links would be fine for answers)

Thanks in advance!

Answer
Before the development of modern refrigeration, ice cream was a luxury item reserved for special occasions. Making ice cream was quite laborious. Ice was cut from lakes and ponds during the winter and stored in large heaps, in holes in the ground, or in wood-frame ice houses, insulated by straw. Many farmers and plantation owners, including U.S. Presidents George Washington and Thomas Jefferson, cut and stored ice in the winter for use in the summer. Frederic Tudor of Boston turned ice harvesting and shipping into big business, cutting ice in New England and shipping it around the world.

Ice cream was made by hand in a large bowl placed inside a tub filled with ice and salt. This was called the pot-freezer method. French confectioners refined the pot-freezer method, making ice cream in a sorbtierre (a covered pail with a handle attached to the lid). In the pot-freezer method, the temperature of the ingredients is reduced by the mixture of crushed ice and salt. The salt water is cooled by the ice, and the action of the salt on the ice causes it to (partially) melt, absorbing latent heat and bringing the mixture below the freezing point of pure water. The immersed container can also make better thermal contact with the salty water and ice mixture than it could with ice alone.

The hand-cranked churn, which also uses ice and salt for cooling, replaced the pot-freezer method. The exact origin of the hand-cranked freezer is unknown, but the first U.S. patent for one was #3254 issued to Nancy Johnson on September 9, 1843. The hand-cranked churn produced smoother ice cream than the pot freezer and did it quicker. Many inventors patented improvements on Johnson's design.

In Europe and early America, ice cream was made and sold by small businesses, mostly confectioners and caterers. Jacob Fussell of Baltimore, Maryland was the first to manufacture ice cream on a large scale. Fussell bought fresh dairy products from farmers in York County, Pennsylvania, and sold them in Baltimore. An unstable demand for his dairy products often left him with a surplus of cream, which he made into ice cream. He built his first ice cream factory in Seven Valleys, Pennsylvania, in 1851. Two years later, he moved his factory to Baltimore. Later, he opened factories in several other cities and taught the business to others, who operated their own plants. Mass production reduced the cost of ice cream and added to its popularity.
An electric ice cream maker

The development of industrial refrigeration by German engineer Carl von Linde during the 1870s eliminated the need to cut and store natural ice and when the continuous-process freezer was perfected in 1926, it allowed commercial mass production of ice cream and the birth of the modern ice cream industry.

The most common method for producing ice cream at home is to use an ice cream maker, in modern times generally an electrical device that churns the ice cream mixture while cooled inside a household freezer, or using a solution of pre-frozen salt and water, which gradually melts while the ice cream freezes. Some more expensive models have an inbuilt freezing element. A newer method of making home-made ice cream is to add liquid nitrogen to the mixture while stirring it using a spoon or spatula. Some ice cream recipes call for making a custard, folding in whipped cream, and immediately freezing the mixture.

Commercial delivery
A bicycle-based ice cream vendor in Indonesia

Ice cream can be mass-produced and thus is widely available in developed parts of the world. Ice cream can be purchased in large cartons (vats and squrounds) from supermarkets and grocery stores, in smaller quantities from ice cream shops, convenience stores, and milk bars, and in individual servings from small carts or vans at public events. In Turkey and Australia, ice cream is sometimes sold to beach-goers from small powerboats equipped with chest freezers. Some ice cream distributors sell ice cream products from traveling refrigerated vans or carts (commonly referred to in the US as "ice cream trucks"), sometimes equipped with speakers playing children's music. Traditionally, ice cream vans in the United Kingdom make a music box noise rather than actual music.

what is the cost of living in new zealand compared to the u.s.?

BOB L

Answer
Kia Ora,

Here in NZ, the dollar is rising!
Not that long ago, a US dollar was worth about $1.50 NZ.
So keeping that in mind,
in comparison the cost of living is not that much different.

A liter of milk costs about $1.50;
a (plastic) bottle of soda (Coke or Pepsi) about $2.00;
wholemeal bread about $1.50 a loaf.

In turn, student flats can rent as low as $75/week.
My phone bill is about $55 a month (including broadband)
and the electric is around $45 month.

Some things are more expensive...
it's an island country in the far South Pacific.
Many things are imported in from Australia, Japan, and China.
Most clothes are moderately priced (no Wal Marts here)
but Levi 501's cost $125.00;
Hush Puppies shoes start at around $100;
and you'd be lucky to find New Balance or Nike shoes for less than $200.00.

Things you wouldn't think much about in the US are expensive--
a 2-pack of sticky notes cost me $12.00.
A coffee on campus is $3.40.
However, I can catch a bus to get home for just $1.80.

Cars, motorcycles, boats, and especially bicycles are more expensive.
Computers, CDs, DVDs, and other technology is comparable with the USA.

Overall, the prices probably even out...
the minimum wage is higher
and workers get four weeks vacation each year,
so that's a nice perk on top of everything.
Okay, so some of the things I pay more for here are trivial...
it's a small price to pay for living in paradise.

Hope that helps

Is a 2005-2006 kawasaki klx 125 a good dirt bike?

Tim

Im getting a klx 125 soon. Its either 05 or 06. I just didnt know if it was a good, fast dirt bike.

Answer
Hello,
I cannot answer about the performance of how fast or weight and handling.I can answer about the engine and mechanics of the bike.As you know it is Japanese made with pride and quality as good as any other Japanese bike like Honda Etc in my opinion because I am a certified mechanic and work mainly on all Japanese bikes. The 2006 model has only the kick start and some of these came only set up for dirt or meaning off road, make sure when you purchase you ask about the title in case it is or has been set up for the on road use.It has the mikuni carburetor with drum brakes front and back with cdi electronic ignition. The 2012 Klx 125 Kawasaki is a endure and off road bike meaning you can title the bike and drive it on the road legally or just use it off road your choice but it does come with all the federal regulated electronics like horn lights blinkers headlight and so on.It is a dual overhead cam putting out around 10.9 horsepower with fuel injection digital dc-cdi ignition meaning no carburetor or points to deal with and a 5 speed manual transmission electric start and kick start, twin caliper front brake system for exceptional braking a 1.85 gallon of fuel that will probably take you near 150 miles or more depending on how you drive it.The older model 2003 has all the same except it has a mikuni carburetor. The engines are your basic 4 stroke oil forced lubrication with a sinle piston and dual valves. These engines are bullet proof,I have worked on a few only to tune them up and install new rings and valve job.The top end is the only thing that really wears on the bike like all good Japanese bikes meaning after many miles of riding sometimes you have to install new rings and grind the valves to keep the horsepower up to where ir should be and a valve job with some new gaskets and your ready to put another several thousand miles on the bike. The parts are relatively inexpensive as well and very economical to maintain as a whole bike.It is a very nice bike to use on road and off.If you are a beginner rider then this bike would be for you because it is very easy to learn on easy to ride light in weight corners the road easily with excellent handling and braking power. You will not be disappointed if you purchase a Kawasaki klx 125,just remember to keep the oil changed at regular intervals along with the air cleaner filter fuel filter and you will have years of use with several thousand enjoyable inexpensive miles of riding.Good luck with your purchase and if you have anymore questions please ask and I'll answer them as I can. Please let us know your decision as I would like to know if you like the bike after your purchase.Take care ride safe and always wear a helmet.

Why doesnt the electric start on my motorcycle work?

It fires up if I push it down a hill and drop it in gear, but the electric start doesnt even attepmt to crank the engine. Its a 2003 lifan 250 and I have absolutly no idea where to start looking for a problem. However I did check the fuse inline with the starter, unfortunatly, it was fine. Any suggestions?

Answer
How old is the battery? Even if they are well cared for a motorcycle battery usually only lasts about 3 years. If the battery is more than 3 years old, maybe it's time for a new one.

Are you positive the battery has a full charge. Don't judge by the lights. They can deceive you.

A motorcycle battery in good condition will lose about 1% charge every day. It is also bad to let a motorcycle battery go below 50% charge. Letting the battery go below 50% charge and sulfation can happen. This is a condition where sulfur crystals from the sulfuric acid in the battery will form on the lead plates. When this happens the battery doesn't release the amount of energy it should and it will not accept a full charge like it should. They even make solar powered float chargers if a power source is not available.

Best to keep the battery fully charged in storage. If you intend to not use the bike for about 3 weeks or more connect a battery tender, sometimes called a float charger to the battery. This will maintain the battery at 100% charge without overcharging.

If you must use a battery charger charge at a rate of no more than 2 amps. Anything more than 2 amps will cause permanent damage to the battery.

Check the acid level in the battery. Motorcycle batteries are usually translucent with high and low acid level marks on the case. If needed, fill with distilled water only. Tap water contains minute amounts of minerals and chemicals that will harm your battery.

Make sure your battery terminal connections are clean and corrosion free. Clean with a wire brush. You can also use a mixture of baking soda and water.

Once you get the connections clean, put a little dielectric grease on the cable ends and terminals. This will prevent corrosion in the future.

How do I start a dirt bike without kicking it or without an electric start?

Q. Like while going down a hill you do something with the clutch..? Refresh my memory?

Answer
use 2nd gear or higher, it allows the motor to turn over easier because its in a higher gear when youre roll starting it.

Can I save on electricity by hooking up a generator to a car battery?

QnA

If I made a simple generator powered by a bike, would I be able to hook it up to a wet cell battery to recharge it, and then use the battery to power various appliances (lights, fans, microwave, computer, etc...?) How long do you think it would take to charge such a battery and how long would it last?

Answer
You could hook one up. It could only be used to power items which run on 12 volt DC, unless you use an inverter. Any battery you use would not last but a few minutes when powering more than a light or two. The effort you would have to expend in charging the battery would greatly outweigh the usefulness you would get out of it.

Why do people suggest new bikers start with a bike with lower engine displacement?

Dd

*Before anyone makes any assumptions, I am not looking to explain why I want a more powerful bike as my first. I haven't even taken a class yet; I've just been doing some reading to educate myself on the proper way to get into biking. I am not really considering any kind of bike until I take a class and see if I even enjoy riding, but I am leaning towards a small, light, low powered used bike to practice on first.

Virtually everything I have read has said first time bikers should stick to small, light bikes with lower cc. I've heard from a few people it depends on the person but the vast majority of the literature I've got my hands on has said its an accident waiting to happen because the bike is too "powerful" but they never elaborate on what they mean by "powerful". I understand that smaller and lighter bikes handle more easily in terms of making turns, but what exactly do they mean by "power"? Is it speed? Acceleration? Both?

I have gathered that bigger bikes tend to accelerate faster, and the logic is that if a beginner is on one of these more powerful bikes and accidentally accelerates too quickly, they could panic and lose control. Whereas if they were on a bike that accelerates slower, they would be able to recover more easily. Is that the concern, or am I misunderstanding something?

Other people who say it depends on the rider seem to believe that so long as the rider isn't trying to intentionally race or show off on the road they will be fine with a more powerful bike. Am I correctly understanding their argument?

Thanks for any clarification. One thing that stinks about books is you can't ask a question if the author isn't clear enough in their explanation.
@Candid That's exactly what I do not understand. What exactly do you mean by "limit"? I understand how physically larger and physically heavier bikes are harder to turn, so that makes sense. But can you explain why engine displacement matters? Hope that makes more sense, thanks

Answer
All the above good answers have there points. but I would like to add:

A larger displacement bike presents more opportunities for disaster. These potential disasters are overcome by acquired recovery skills. Either I've become more skilled or more mellowed out with age but; in my past I didn't come back from a ride on a 1,000cc sport bike without a recovery . (Now I can't recall a recent recovery.)

When I take the wife's 250 Ninja out to fill up the tank, charge battery, transit, etc. I in my memory have never had the power to break traction forcing my recovery skills into use. (that may just be fair weather or chance?) Years ago I gained recovery skills on a even smaller dirt bike but it required a wet surface.

Now I have experienced rides that I really don't care to repeat; being caught in the rain up in mountains and having to choose between going as fast as I can vs. deteriorating sunlight, being caught in snow and recovering, add loose debris on surfaces catching me by surprise and slipping and recovering. Throttle control and instinctive reactions must be correct! A larger bike has a wide window of error that isn't even present in a smaller displacement motorbike.

So what choice are you going to have for your introduction to a sport bike? A large displacement bike that will require finely honed skills to prevent or to recover from any slight speed or throttle error? Or will you choose to learn on a milder bike that will but rarely does present these issues that require fast correct responses to prevent a complete disaster?

I don't care how careful, cautious, mature,or responsible you are or call yourself you will place yourself in these situations that will require recovery skills. Wouldn't you prefer to experience them on the outside of the riding envelope instead of at every corner you enter too fast , apply too much throttle too early,or unseen surface debris on a turn with excessive throttle and need recovery skills to prevent a disaster?

Who is "killing" the Electric Bike (aka Electric Scooter) in US and Canada? Many retail shops have closed, from Boston to Vancouver. North American manufacturers (Nova Cruz, Wavecrest, Bionx, Egovehicles) have gone under or are selling much less than they did before.

In comparison, in most of Asia, sales of ebikes are surging? Is it the economy collapse? Is it government? Is it the big auto companies? Is it battery companies? Is it some other factor?

Answer
All these smaller vehicles are disappearing mainly because of our affluence. As all the household get affluent they do not want smaller bikes and cars and go for bigger ones. Also it creates a fashion and so the not so affluent also aim to buy it. In due course there is no takers and they die a natural death.
Take the case of China where a decade ago there were thousands of cycles in the main cities and now they are all replaced with bikes and cars. So is the case of India. Once it was having a lot of 100 cc bikes but now it is n the decline. So it is the life style and not the government or oil companies who are responsible for it.

Ok my bicycle has dual 55 watt fog lights on there i use at night (there VERY bright), and i was wondering what i could use that is self contained on the bike to keep the battery charged up?

Also i have a battery charger but i dont wanna be dependent on it for my bike lights.

Answer
for 29 dollars at Northern tool you can buy a solar battery charger that puts out 1.8 amps during the daytime. If you can park your bike in the sun or just the battery and charger...I have used this system successfully on 12volt boat batteries for years...but it is just a trickle charger

Just bought my first motorcycle, what maintenance is needed for the battery?

Joshua

bike-2009 Suzuki GS500F
Do I need to buy a battery charger for it?

Answer
You can buy a battery tender that will include connections that you screw on with your (+) and (-) connectors. Then the other end will have a plug on that. Install that (it is easy) and then tuck it where it wont get in the way of anything (zip ties work great). Then you can plug the battery tender in every time you park your bike. It will make you battery last longer if you get into the habit of placing the tender on it. I have two bikes and an atv... all three are on tenders everytime I put them away. Two of them are 2004's and one is a 2005 all with factory batteries.

If you do take the battery out of the bike as some have suggested. Do put it on a tender and place it on a piece of wood or something. Do NOT place it on the concrete. It is very hard on the battery.

What is the best way to purchase a moped / electric scooter?

best buy electric bike reviews image

StraightBa

I have decided to buy a moped (or electric scooter) to use casually around my neighborhood (not for extremely long hauls).

Since I don't know much about mopeds, the only place I went to was vespa.com. Most of their options are extremely expensive. I'm looking to spend no more than $1,000.

I'm looking for recommendations about obtaining one. Are their other good companies besides vespa? Are their moped/dealer shops that I could visit locally to actually see the different options.

Should I go and test drive one, like I do with cars? Or is this something I should simply buy online (and go that route).

Any other things I should be looking for?

Answer
Mopeds have pedals, scooters have floorboards.
Vespas are scooters, expensive scooters. You can get around just as well on other brands like Kymco, Genuine, Piaggio, Yamaha, Sym, and Honda but you aren't going to get any of those new for $1000.
You might be able to get a Chinese scooter new for that but even that is doubtful since scooter prices have gone up quite a bit. Also from what I hear many of shops are out of scooters these days so you might want to call around to see who has what.
I read a good review on a Velocity electric scooter but I don't know the cost.
As far as mopeds you might call some bicycle stores and see if they carry electric bikes. I have never seen one in a scooter or motorcycle dealer.
You might be able to find something used on Craigslist.
Other things....
Check into what your local laws are for licensing. In CA we have to have a M2 license even for mopeds. Some states don't require anything for up to 50cc scooters.
Figure out how fast you will need to go before you buy something. Don't get a scooter that top ends at 30 when you have to get on roads where traffic goes 45.
If you want to get more info on drop ship (online) scooters check out the scootdawg forum. A lot of the people there own Chinese scooters and might be able to point you towards better brands and dealers.

How can I live a more environmentally conscious life?

Q. I am learning more about global warming and the impact a family of four has on this earth versus 250 people in an undeveloped nation. Things like this really make me want to get more involved and lessen my footprint on the earth, but how? Where do I start? I want to vote for the right laws to help this but I don't understand them all. I can't afford an electric car or to start using a solar panel for energy, so how can I help?

Answer
The four corner stones of the current environmental movement are Reduce, Recycle, Re-use, and Re-purpose with a theme of Sustainability. The good news is that most of us have plenty of eco-friendly opportunities available to us with equally commiserate financial rewards. In some cases, it does take an investment of time or money before the savings can be realised.

I often suggest that people start scouring the "frugal living" sites and boards for as whole host of money saving ideas. Money is but one resource we use. What we spend our money on involves a whole host of additional resources. Saving resources is what the Reduce, Re-use, and Re-purposing cornerstones are all about. For a personal inventory of opportunity, start by peering into your garbage, recycle, and waste cans and bins. Do you see paper napkins, paper towels, disposable wipes, or individual serving containers in your waste stream? What types of chemical based items do you see in terms of cleaning, garden, and other non-food items? Start with those things that are easy to remedy even if they are a small, over all portion of your waste stream.

Another area to take a personal inventory from is your budgeting system, check book, credit card receipts, cash receipts, bills, etc... These also tell you what you spend your money on, buy, and consume. You may want to address utility bills and/or the resources used that generate those bills. This could be things like using less electricity or water, using less vehicle fuel through combined trips, and so on. Or you could discover that maybe off-road racing could be replaced by pedle bike racing for both an economic and an environmental savings. Some people take up visiting their local library more often for both an economic and environmental savings.

Reviewing one's spending habits also brings up the idea of doing more active purchasing decision making which can also reduce certain types of consumption and hence resource use. Doing things like taking an closet inventory before hitting the mall can help one realise that what they really need is a coordinating piece to something they already own versus a whole new outfit. Developing honest needs criteria and purchasing decisions on tools, equipment, and supplies for either the home or garage; you can add additional environmentally conscious criteria such as durability as you choose too.

For many, minimalist living is not particularly functional for most of us trying to also be environmentally conscious. You may see the need for better window treatments, different landscaping, or some just plain caulk even if you are "only a renter". Cloth linens like napkins, towels, and scrub rags may be an investment opportunity for both financial and enviornmental returns. Individual glass serving containers, a stainless water bottle, and so on may work for you. To be able to honestly Re-use and Re-purpose, most of us need some tools of the trade, to learn some skills, and be able to think outside of the box within the Do-It-Yourself (DYI) frame of mind too.

Start small and with the easy stuff; what may be easy for you is not necessarily going to be easy for me. It's a whole life style change with a number of economic and health benefits that simply happen in the process. And, the opportunities simply keep on coming in easier and easier modes as the rest of the community comes on board.

Answer
Where are you located? There are several electric bicycle dealers around the country. You can find a good list at http://e-bikedealers.com/ or at electric-bikes.com, or bicycle-power.com. Each dealer will carry a variety of lines and products. Options for electric-assist bicycle products include 1) electric bicycles, 2) do-it-yourself conversion kits to put on your existing bike, or 3) the motorized trailer that attaches to your existing bike when you want propulsion, then remove it in seconds when you just want to pedal. If you're interested in utility biking (using a bicycle for transportation rather than a car), any of these is a good solution.

Have a troy-bilt rider with Kohler SV590S (SV590-0017, see below) that has been stored and unused last season (2012), i.e. stored fall 2011, with stabilizer treated gas. Now won't go. new gas, Fuel flow from tank to carb OK (through fuel filter), fires if carb sprayed with carb cleaner. Solenoid works (don't know if it was stuck at first before I pushed on it a couple of times).

Got the bowl off, ruined the gasket. Local repair shop pointed out that a disk (about 3/8 inch) was missing, probably due to freezing with water in gas. He had kit with gasket, disk and other pieces.

Cleaned carb with carb cleaner, which blew through all the various ports (3x so far). Reassembled, still dies when (jump) starting, but runs for a few seconds with some carb cleaner down the throat. Can hear solenoid click, bowl now has some gas in it when removed.

Each time I made sure that the various interlocks were OK - seat down or bypassed, brake on, PTO (blade) off, and jump started since battery is only good for a few tries if charged overnight.

Note there is no evidence of a fuel pump as shown in the manual as the gas line goes from fuel tank to filter to carburetor.

Now what? Any suggestions for troubleshooting & fix ups so that my son doesn't have to use the push mower again? Can't afford repair shop diagnostics - unemployed

(will probably have to replace battery again if this thing starts)

Kohler Courage 19 Engine SV590S (electric start) Spec no SV590-0017 (MTD) SN 3605950363 (found manuals online including service manual 20 690 01 Rev. G)
Troy-Bilt Model 6605 SN 1C026H20244 Manufactured 3/2006 13AX60TG766 (found manuals online)

BTW: Also when moving carburetor assembly noticed an extra spring on the ground - about 1 5/8 inches long with squared hook at one end and rounded "eye" at other, narrower coil at hook end to wider coil at "eye" end. Looks brand new and mower is 2006 so suspect spring is from something else, like a new bike that was being worked on a few days earlier. Also not in found in any of the parts diagrams related to the fuel & throttle assemblies. Hopefully it is not from the mower. Looked at Troy-Bilt mowers with Kohler engine in store with similar throttle/choke assembly and do not see any evdience of this spring.

I have the following online manuals obtained online over the last few days. Note that file names listed below have been prefixed with descriptive names

Answer
I think that you still have something in the carburetor that needs to come out. Sometimes it is difficult to get the things clean. I use a chem dip type cleaner that I got from the auto parts store specifically for carburetors. Comes in a gallon can for around $20.00 but last for years and is good for a lot of parts. You take the carb apart and soak for an hour or so, rinse it with water and blow it dry with compressed air. Works first time every time, except once on a outboard motor, but that is a different story. It is possible to get them cleaned out with spray carb cleaner once they are off and taken apart but it doesn't work as well as the soaking cleaner. When taking things apart that are somewhat complicated, a digital picture or two can save your bacon in the home stretch. Anyway, what you describe sounds to me like a dirty carburetor.

Can I just buy a Fender fretboard/neck and use it with my Squier? Or is there something I can buy to make my fretboard and neck look this way without replacing it completely?

Answer
Hello there,

You can buy a Fender neck that has tinted lacquer finish. That should bolt onto your Squier Deluxe. May have to do a little shimming to get the strings to playable height. That is a common fitting technique when swapping necks. A amber tint (aged look) Fender neck will cost you $175 to $225. They are not cheap. I don't think any of the Squier necks have the amber tint lacquer. That is why you would have to get a Fender neck.

An alternative is to refinish your neck. Not that hard, but takes a some time and a lot of effort. You sand off the present finish. The do a fine sanding to prepare the neck for refinishing. Use 400 grit paper or finer. You want to remove any scratches that was put in while removing the old finish. Then you spray on a coat or two of amber tint lacquer. Wet sand with very fine grit paper (around 800) between coats for a nice smooth finish. The cover the amber with a couple coats of clear lacquer. Again wet sand between coats, but not after the final coat. After the final coat of clear has had time to cure, you can buff it to get a shinier gloss if you want.

A set of spray cans for the lacquer will run a little over $30.

You can have the neck professionally refinished. That will run you $150 and up depending on who does it. If you know anyone who does custom paint jobs on cars or bikes, they could do the job for you. Same paint, same tools and same process.
