upgrading an electric scooter any advice?

darkstar11

I drive a 500 watt TaoTao ATE 501 and it only has a top speed of 20 to 21 miles per hour and only drives 10 miles per charge(I think) Is there any upgrade parts I can get for this scooter so that it can drive 30 maybe 35 miles per hour and get better battery life? I'm tired of being on a street legal scooter/moped and not being able to keep up with average city traffic flow. I hate being tailgated because I'm driving slower. I think it runs on 48 volt batteries and uses three of them. Not sure about the control box because its kinda hard to get to.

Answer
First you have to realize that those 500 watt electric scooters are really just heavy cheap electric assisted bikes. The TaoTao ATE 501 weighs about 200 lbs and that's why it's so slow. If you want any reasonable performance, you use the fold out pedals at least for acceleration, it also recharges the batteries slightly.

I suspect you have a 36 volt system with three 12 v lead acid batteries wired in series. It would be a good idea to have each of those batteries checked out separately. Lead acid batteries can be tricky and it only takes one to be in poor shape for the whole bike to suffer.

The most obvious upgrade you could do is wire in another three lead acid batteries in parallel. Nothing else would need changing but you would have to find a location to put the batteries.

The next possible upgrade is to replace the batteries with expensive lithium ion or lithium polymer batteries which are convenient because they are available in similar voltage levels. Their charging procedures are similar but not identical so you may be able to get away with not changing any of the charging mechanisms. The biggest problem with this is the cost.

A larger motor probably won't do you much good and may require custom fabrication of the motor mounts but you may be able to find a more powerful motor in the same form factor. In general, most electric motors can be operated at higher voltages with the only consequence being overheating of the motor and wires, the wires can be increased to thicker wires and you could try to get more cooling to the motor but this would really only allow you to have short bursts with the possibility of burning something out. Of course doing so means changing the battery layout and adding more batteries.

The best solution would be to upgrade to a proper light weight electric assisted bike but they run about $2,000 or more, roughly double what the scooters cost. Maybe find a used bike and put in a 500 watt conversion kit... At least with the bikes, everyone expects you to be slow.

The 500 watt scooters are not what I would call street legal, just exempt from regulations. It takes a 150 cc scooter to be freeway legal and a 250 cc scooter to actually be safe at freeway speeds and any scooter with more than 50 cc's must be licensed and registered as a motor vehicle. Those I would call street legal once licensed. You might be better off with a 50 cc gasoline scooter, those are usually exempt from regulation too. The old smoky two cylinder ones had a lot of power, about double what the new four cylinder ones have but even the new 4 cylinder ones would be four times the power of the 500 watt electric scooter. If you want to be environmentally friendly, make ethanol from rotten fruits that you get from the grocers for free.

Are electric dirt bikes safe for 10 year olds?

Aaron

i want to know if electric dirt bikes are safe for 10 year old boys

Answer
Yes, they are very safe they have a top speed of 10-15 mph and they are very low to the ground and you can out run one easily. They are very good training bikes to get them ready for the bigger ones. But i would suggest them to a 10 year old.

How old do you have to be to take scooter lessons?

Q. I am 14 and was wondering if I am able to take scooter lessons to get my licence when I'm 16? Simple answer with good information will be best answer :-) thank you.

Answer
At 14 you can legally ride a 200W electic scooter ( with pedals) or an electric bike on the road, you do not need a license or mot or insurance ( though advisable) they do not need DVLA reg and you can legally ride them on cycle routes
Top speed is limited to 12 mph. But this is faster than the cars driving through central london

it has to be the 200W to be legal for a 14 year old in UK

Here is a unique idea for a solar powered bike using photovoltaics in the wheels: http://www.treehugger.com/files/2006/05/solar_powered_e_1.php
and the typical: http://www.cisolar.com/catSolarebike.html

With respect to converting your bike to electric, you have 3 ways to go:

A hub motor kit
a sneaky crank motor kit
or a friction motor kit

There are also many home made conversions that use the chain drives:

Which countries now have full-electric car technology besides China and Japan?

Q. BYD e6 electric full-size SUV: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BYD_e6

Nissan LEAF compact electric car: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nissan_Leaf

* Chevrolet Volt is not full-electric besides it needs gasoline as fuel.

Answer
It depends upon what you mean by "full-electric car technology" and by asking "which countries"...

Electric cars are not a national phenomena. They are things. National policies can promote electric cars but to my knowledge no country has nationalized an electric car building company and is producing electric cars on their own. Corporations may give some a feeling of national pride or identity but many corporations are multi national and may hold allegiance to no country.

Countries and areas that promote electric cars with incentives are more likely to attract corporations that are making electric cars. Such companies are in some ways not very different than other corporations. If an area will provide certain grants, property, utilities, or tax incentives then companies are more likely to build a plant in that location. Having cheap labor and reasonable lines of supply are also a plus. Selling their products may require a different set of incentives to attract buyers.

A case in point may be "Better Place." http://www.betterplace.com/ This company does not make cars. They sell a battery swapping service. They have several international initial target locations including: Israel, Denmark, Australia and Hawaii, San Francisco and Canada. The nissan leaf was to be a part of their system and may be in the future. For now they are swapping batteries on the Renault Fluence ZE. http://www.betterplace.com/ By some measure this might be considered a "full-electric car technology," but to what country are you going to attribute this technology? Shai Agassi, the companies founder and CEO has lived in California and Israel.

The Tesla Roadster is an American company and a media success. It is now selling their cars internationally, but the actual number of vehicles sold is presently just over 1000.1 Their are many lessor known electric vehicle companies that may happily sell you a vehicle that is hardly a production run. For a full production run of a full electric vehicle (BEV: battery electric vehicle) that is fully highway capable in the US we are looking to the Nissan Leaf as a first. Zap vehicles have been built in China for years and sold by an American Company internationally as motorcycles but we might not necessarily put these in the same class as the Nissan Leaf. The same may be true of other of the ess expensive Chinese cars.

I would agree that the Volt is not a "full electric" vehicle, but it is more electric than the more parallel hybrid prius. From a purist point of view perhaps even a BEV is not a pure electric vehicle as it uses chemistry in the batteries. A pure electric might use ultracapacitors for storage or something like this: http://electric-vehicles-cars-bikes.blogspot.com/2009/08/korean-researchers-develop-electric.html

What's your opinion about the electric car?

donutdan41

I was thinking about it today, and I find it to be a real shame that the US hasn't really adopted the electric car yet. What scares me most, is that the US is pushing for the hydrogen car, even though the technology for the electric car is much more promising...
So, would you buy one if it cost the exact same price as a normal car, assuming that it can only go 60 miles on a single charge, takes 8 hours to charge, and let's say it has tires that never need to be changed?

Answer
Quiet, smooth, smell free,, refuel at home or work, low maintenance,
yes I have bought one (an old fashioned conversion) http://www.batteryvehiclesociety.org.uk/

Moden batteries will give a range of 200 miles http://www.teslamotors.com and out perform a ferrari
and can be recharged in 10 minutes http://www.phonixmotorcars.com

and the batteries will last 20 years and are fully recyclable (unlike most of an infernal combustion engine)

And even if you don't have your own home generator, well to wheel electric is stilll more efficient & less polluting because large generators using unrefined fuel, close to source, constantly monitored & maintained , running at optimm load & temperature, & distributed via a 90% efficient grid, then electric motors give max torque from 0rpm from cold, plus regenerative braking & no consumption when idle.

But driving an electric car is just a much more pleasent, fun & strees free experience than an old clunky infernal combustion fossil.

The tyres still wear out though, and require about 8 gallons of oil to make. (the higher torque/acceleration could even mean that you could wear them out faster if you want to drive fast) see the drag bike burn outs at http://www.killacycle.com

How much would it cost to get a moped?

Richiboi

I'm 16, live in the UK and want to get a moped. How much would this cost?

So far I've found four main costs

1)The Moped itself
2)Driving lessons/test
3)Helmet and gloves
4)Insurance

Can anyone give me some average prices for these things?

Answer
In the U.K the best price to get yourself a descent moped (50cc) is around £650!

My CBT (Moped Training) took one day from 9am untill 3pm and it cost me £120 but the prices range from roughly £90 to £130... The test is very easy though, provided you do it on a automatic and not a manual!

Helmet will cost you £50 but i dont know anyone who wears motorcycle gloves on a moped cause it looks kind of cheesy, you know wearing a motorcycle costume on a little scooter!

Insurance costs me £28 a month on third party (the cover only the other driver and not you) and fully comp was about £60... The cheapest third party insurance company for me was motorcycles direct.

Also when you buy your bike do a few checks:
>If its liquid cooled, take the cap off the coolant tank and smell it; if it smells like exhaust fumes, the gasket is gone
>Check the frame numbers, on my bike its on the bottom right hand side under the foot rests; and if the frame numbers looks welded in any way and not properly indented in there, the bike is most probably a ringer
>Check the electrics for example the electric start, indicators, lights etc.
>And if the suspension appears to be leaking oil then do not buy unless they are upright forks and u can get the fork seals changed

when do the 2013 dirt bikes come out?

Linda

im looking to get a new 250 dirt bike and i want to know when the 2013s come out. I am looking at honda, kawasaki, suzuki, ktm, yamaha...all the major brands.

Answer
All the bikes come out the same time, around the end of 2012. All the bikes are very similar, you're going to have to ride each of the bikes to find your preference.

KTM is way too much money, currency between Austria and the US isn't good. Yamaha is too advanced, their 2013 models are going to look like a futuristic robot, and it might even have electric start, which adds around 20 lbs.

Kawasaki is great as the 2012 model almost dominates the other bikes. I prefer the Suzuki, but it's all rider preference. Suzuki isn't over designed, it's the best bike in my opinion. Next years bikes could go from $8,000, but the KTMs... (Keep Throwing Money). Could go up to $10,000.

What should I add to my electric scooter?

Nathan

In November of 2012, I became the proud owner of a currie tech ezip 4.5 electric scooter. I haven't crashed it once! But I am in the time were I think mini motorcycles are neat, but I'm going to stick to my electric scooter/bike. It's a motorcycle to me because it has a seat. But is there any way to make it cooler? Should I get a full head helmet like guys on crotch rockets do? Are there any accessories I should add to it to make it look nicer? All it has is a mini license plate with my name (thank you grandma) lol, a light, and a red light in the back I added. But anything fun and cool I could add is what I'm looking for thanks!

Answer
Get an interesting special horn for it. Maybe a musical horn, or one with an old fashioned oogah sound.

should i buy an xb-500 electric bike to got to work?

Answer
Absolutely, (as long as you're within 15 miles from your work) - any time we can find something that will save the environment - I say, go for it! Plus they're pretty nice looking.
But I would first check your state motor vehicle laws before buying it just to be sure that you can drive it on the roads. Some states are funny about electric mopeds and scooters.
If you're in Canada (at least in Ontario) some electric bikes/scooters that have operating pedals don't even have to be registered.
Also, don't pay much over $650 (with shipping). This site has the best deals and shipping is low,

Are electric motorcycles cool?

BobbleColo

So, I am shopping for my first motorcycle. I was looking at a few bikes. A Ducati Monster 696, a Ninja 600, and a 2013 Zero S (not 2012). The 2013 Zeros have different motors and batteries that give it near 600cc equivalent performance and a 130+ mile range at a top speed of 95MPH. I am a huge EV enthusiast and I currently drive an all-electric car. I'd love an EV motorcycle like the Zero S, but there is one very important factor to consider... the "cool" factor. Do you think EV bikes like the 2013 Zero S are as cool as those other petrol bikes? Or, would the ladies be more inclined to hop on the back of a noisy ICE bike?

Answer
You have an all-electric car -- you are already totally un-cool. Nothing could make you cool so you might as well get a Zero.

Bike guys love all bikes. I don't know anybody who thinks they're uncool.

They can never be what a gas bike is, but what they are is actually better and that will come to be understood as more people get to ride them.

The instant throttle response and hard acceleration give you the thrill of speed for carving up the canyon roads. But the 95 mph top speed means don't try racing a gas sport bike unless it's a drag race.

It will not make a lot of noise so if that's what you're into have a stereo system with a sub woofer installed.

Product Description
For aspiring little Grand Prix champs, this mini motorbike - complete with cool racing decals and realistic sounds - is the most excitement this side of the checkered flag!

My boys ages 2 and 4 love this bike! My two year old hadn't gotten the concept of steering in 1 year of owning his tricycle but in a few minutes on a motorized bike he figured it out after running into enough walls. Originally I purchased this bike for my older son only and got my 2 year old a three wheel smaller version from another company that was supposed to go the same speed...it didn't. My older son was running 3 laps around my younger son litterally as they rode around the house. I didn't think that my younger son would be able to handle the bigger bike but to our surprise when my oldest turned his back he jumped on his bike and took off!...so we sent his bike back and ordered him the mini motorcross as well. I like that they have to master coordinating their feet and steering and the switch of forward and reverse...very user friendly for the kids.

I like to know what is your thought on the Prodeco electric bicycle?

ChevalierC

I recently have an interest in mountain bike. I want to get a bike to commute to work on the weekday and use it for mountain biking on the weekend. Any feedback is greatly appreciated.

http://www.prodecotech.com/

Answer
Not only are you comparing apples to oranges. You're comparing apples to oranges to bananas!

A "commuter bike" will have no suspension parts. Suspension parts are needed only on off-road trails.

A mountain bike would make for a terrible commuter bike. The suspension parts weigh the bike down & absorb or zap part of your energy with every stroke of the pedals. Nice off-road. Terrible on the streets. The knobby tires also slow you down.

Electric bikes or electric assist bicycles are B-A-D for any situation. #1) The high initial cost. #2) The high replacement cost of a battery. #3) Makes you fat & lazy. #4) What if the charge in the battery runs low or out in the wrong place at the wrong time. Then YOU get stuck pedaling a VERY heavy bicycle home.

Buy a real bicycle from a real bicycle shop. Get fit & stay fit. R.E.I. sells a nice "commuter bike" on their outlet website. Link below. See 2nd link too - How to Choose a Bicycle

What is the BEST Commuter Bicycle?

Q. A few weeks back I posted a question pertaining to Scooters (gas-powered) and found them in essence to be more trouble than they are worth especially so in terms of their legality from state to state so I decided to look into alternative transportation. I am now seriously considering human-powered (pedal or other) as well as electric bicycles as a less aggravating alternative to solve my transportation needs, Would someone please recommend some excellent human-powered as well as some excellent electric bikes (powerful but inconspicuous to authorities in regards to electric bikes.) Also would someone please tell me (from their own experience) how they feel about "Trikkes" I need something for commuting a short distance (two miles) to work but I'd also like the option to commute a little further comfortably if I need to, Thanks for your Input!

Answer
Look for a commuter bike or a hybrid from the local bike shop. For a trip of only two miles an electric bike is not needed. For much less then am electric bike you can get a shop quality bikes that will last 10 times longer. Stay away from Walmart and other department store bikes. A 2 mile trip on a bike should take you less then 10 min on a hybrid. You can also ride them on smooth dirt bike paths like rail trails.

Check out Trek, Specialized, Fuji, Giant, Raleigh, Cannondale, Jamis, Breezer, Schwinn, and a few others.

Answer
Hey Joisey whatsamatter fingers broken? http://www.state.nj.us/mvc/

motorized bike (moped) is a pedal bicycle with a helper motor, electric or gas-powered, and is exempt from inspection requirements. For a vehicle to qualify as a moped, it must meet all four of the following conditions:

* Be classified as a pedal bicycle
* Have a motor with less than 50 CCs
* Cannot have more than 1.5 brake horsepower
* Maximum speed cannot be greater than 25 MPH on a flat surface

Vehicles without pedals that are less than 50 CCs, cannot be registered as mopeds. They must be registered as motorcycles, regardless of engine size.

Which is the best brand of best battery charger?

turtle mas

and what ampere rating battery charger should I use for a yamaha
yzf-R6? what difference does the ampere rating make?
I'm looking at battery doc, yuasa, battery tender, and they come in all ampere ratings from 750mA to 1.5A.
answers from any owner of these battery charger are appreciated.
Thank you in advance.

Answer
I agree with the other folks who've recommended the Battery Tender,,it's a good charger.

Your question about Amp Rating.....
In simplest terms,,Amp rating determines the SPEED at which a battery can be recharged.

A Higher Amperage will recharge a given battery Faster.

"Speed" or "Faster" is usually considered a GOOD THING.

NOT SO on Battery Charging!!!
SLOWER is Better,,for several reasons.

HEAT is a major concern.
Higher Amp /Charging Rate will always produce Higher Battery Temps,,,even if it's all within acceptable Specs.

The Lower Charging Temps can be,,the Longer the Battery Life.
The Trade off is SLOWER Charge rate.

Time to Full Charge is figured according to Battery Amp capacity.
Example:
A 1A Charger will Fully Charge a 6A Battery in 6Hours(approx)
A 2A Charger would do it in 3Hrs
A 12A would fully charge a 6A Batt in 1/2 Hr or less!!
The same 1Amp Charger would fully Charge an 80Amp Car Battery....in 80 Hours--about 3 1/2 DAYS.

So in Principle(an in practice) ANY 12Volt Charger will Charge ANY 12 Volt Battery.
It's TRUE that "1 Size Fits All".
But there's Huge Differences in the Performance/Effects amongst the various combos of Batt Size/Charger rates.
In REALITY,,,that "rule" includes a huge compromise.

The Trade-off ranges from extreme OVERCHARGING ,,OverHeating,,Boiling out the Electrolyte,& Reducing Battery LIFE,,,,,,
To being simply "TOO SLOW" to be Practical for most situations.
No one wants to wait 2~3 DAYS for their battery to ReCharge when they need to get to work the next morning.

So the matter of determining " Best SIZE Charger/charge rate"
comes down to considering The Intended Use.

The SMALLER/SLOWER the Charger,,the BETTER,,,for Battery Life,,and "personal safety".

The BIGGER/FASTER the charger,,the Better for quick charge,,getting going in a hurry,etc.

In Your instance,,,and choice of 1.5A vs 750mA(3/4A) it doesn't SEEM like that big a difference.
One is TWICE the charge rate of the Other,,
it will Charge TWICE as Fast.
But it'll also (theoretically) be able to Heat the Battery Twice as much,,boil electrolytes Twice as fast, and generate twice the sulfation rate.

I "THINK" Your battey is an 8 Amp job?
From Fully Dead,,a 1.5A charger will fully charge it in 5 Hrs approx.
That's NOT "overcharging" a 7A~12A range Battery,,,but it's nearing Borderline of what's BEST for Battery Life.

A 3/4A~~ .750mA Charger would take about 10 Hours.
That's SLOWER for YOU,,but Much Better for the Battery.

If you,,left lights on and totally Drained Battery,,,
EITHER would Fully recharge it "overnight".
Either would also recharge it "enough" in 20~30 minutes to allow Kickstarting...provided the battery is in decent physical condition.

Which is also a consideration.
You surely want to keep your battery as Healthy & Happy as possible.
But you also want the capability to deal with "worst case" of a Drained battery to be able to get going in a reasonable amount of time.
20 minutes,,to an Hour WAIT might be fine for YOU,,,while a 4hour wait would "ruin your day"...just for example.

It comes down to what an Individual NEEDS /Wants/Expects.
And the choice should be made with the awareness of the Compromises,,the trade-offs that are inevitable.

And as Contrary as it seems to "BIGGER is BETTER" thinking,,,
Smaller Chargers,,LOWER Charge Rates are BETTER for Battery Life and Reliability.

....................................................
I see you're in Illinois,,,and assume your Biking is limited during winter weather.

If that's so,,and you plan to keep your battery on maintenance charger for the several months of downtime,,,here's a suggestion.

Disconnect the battery cables,,to isolate it from the electrical system.

Keep an eye on the "water Level",,,and use ONLY Distilled Water if you need to add some.
Every grocery store,walmart,etc has it,,$1/gal
I know thats been said a Gazillion times over the last 50 million years,,,and we violate the "Distilled Water ONLY" Rule TWICE that many times and get away with it.
But it DOES make a Huge Difference, especially on Small Batteries.
The chemical/mineral elements in Tap Water/Mineral Water are "electrically" the equivalent of putting a steel screwdriver across the 2 battery terminals,,,,and/or Insulating the internal plates from electron flow.
It's a FAINT effect,,so the bad results take Time to kill the battery.
But it DOES have a distinct and CERTAIN bad effect on Batt Life & reliability.
A GOOD batt that wears out,,Gradually gets weakers and Declines in power,,,giving you "fair warning"

A "Bad" battery from effects of Overcharging,,improper maintenace,,and Wrong Water/Electrolytes--Tap Water,,,
They're "Fine" one day,,and DEAD the next...NO warning.
I dont mean run-down/discharged,,I mean DEAD>Deceased.

"Old News" on Distilled Water,we all know that,so just a reminder.

If you Do plan a "total shutdown" thru winter,,,of course you can Manually charge your battery occasionally during that time.
It's not that much hassle.

The Type of chargers your considering are made to be left on for extended periods anyway.

Ideal,,for both personal convenience And Battery health would be a TIMER that switches the Charger Itself on/off.
Switch charger ON a while,,,let the Charger's Circuitry do IT'S job,,then OFF and let both the charger & battery rest a few days.
YOUR requirement would only be maybe a monthly check of Batt's water level.

Multi-Day Timers are somewhat expensive.
You could buy a New battery next spring for "same price".
So it becomes a rather "false economy",,,any NEW battery is always gonna be better than even BEST-maintained one.

One alternative that tends to "split the difference" is the Single day/24 Hr Timers.
They're cheap enough ,,Under $10 at places like Walmart.
You can set them for a few hours of ON-time each day.
1~2 Hrs Daily Run-Time of the "Smart Chargers" will keep your Batt at Optimum Level,,,,while reduce Total Time of Charger operation.
Saves Energy,LegWork,Battery,,and Charger.
It also constitutes a sort of "extra safety" in the event the battery is "forgotten" on the charger.
Instead of Charger running on maintenance mode all day,,it gets switch OFF automatically.

A Small,Frequent Charge will maintain a battery better than Less-Frequent,more extended charge.

Granted,,that may be a Moot Point,,or even Totally Pointless for many folks.
But a cheap, simple On/Off Timer can be a very useful "charging accessory" for SOME situations.

One example,,not "scientific" and not directly comparable is the "Seasonal" Boats down here on Gulf Coast area.
I know a Bunch of people who replace a SET of batteries every Year at season's beginning,,even after "charging them thru the Off-Season"(Innefectively,,Obviously)
Well,,the simple addition of a Timer & leaving the charger connected "Full Time",,,the batteries are now giving 2 and 3 Years of Reliable Service.
In THAT application,,it's a $10~$50 Timer ,,saving $150~200 Battery set annual expense---forestalling that expense a year or 2. They can "live in the boat shed" for 6 months unattended with no worries about ever overcharging,,or going dead & sulphating themselves to death.

.................
Last Small but important point.
Batt VENT HOSE.
Make sure it's open and not pinched anywhere,,obviously.
Also consider it's Routing path,,particulrly where the Open End is positioned.

Batts make a gas(Hydrogen) which gets "blown away" by airflow during riding.
But that gas also Condenses in the tube,,and some LIQUID "battery acid" exits the tube.
Very Corrosive,,so make sure and drips can't be blown onto Bike Parts while Riding.

A Different environment and conditions exist while Charging the batt.
Any "drips" from the vent are gonna go SOMEWHERE.
With No Road Wind,,naturally they'll fall straight down.
If Damage to your FLOORING is a concern,,,use some kinda drip pan----something plastic is best,,,some common Baking Soda sprinkled in it both retains any acid,,And neutralizes it.

The GAS that exits the vent during charging is Hydrogen Gas.
That's not only Flammable,,it's Explosive.
It dont just Burn,,it DETONATES.
Like the difference between lighting a Candle and a Firecracker.

It's WAY lighter than Air,,Lighter than even Helium.
(You may be famliar with the HINDENBURG BLIMP which exloded/Burned in the '40's)It was filled with HYDROGEN.
I can't imagine of a better example.

The implication to a person charging their Battery on a bike is this:
Most all bikes have their Batt Vent Tubes routed Down and exitting at Bottom of Bike.

While sitting still,,and Batt being Charged,,and Hydrogen being produced,,,,
Where's the vented GAS going??
RIGHT,,it's wafting STRAIGHT BACK UP,,"through the Motorcycle".
Your Bike is like a chicken getting smoked on a grille,,,Except it Aint Hickory.
It's Corrosive,Acidic,Flammable Hydrogen Gas.

The "cure" is simple,,,get a length of tubing that'll slip snugly over your existing Batt Vent Tube,,,and route it AWAY from the bike.
Simply to avoid the fumes from drifting straight up back onto your bike.

The Volume of Gas produced by a charging battery is Very Small,as far as Flammability concerns.
In a normal garage,or storage shed,,,the AIR:Gas ratio is really too lean to support combustion.
BUT!!!!,,If You happen to use a COVER,,or Tarp,or whatever which DOESN'T "breathe Freely".....
It's POSSIBLE to Fill it with the extremely LIGHT Hydrogen Gas.
In effect,,a sorta "Hydrogen Balloon".
It WILL displace the Air under such a canopy.
You may not actually be creating a "Little Hindenburg Balloon-Bomb" under Your Bike's Cover,,,
But You would CERTAINLY be storing it in a Cloud of Corrosive Hydrogen Gas,,,at minimum.

Routing the Batt Vent AWAY from the Bike is a simple enough solution....and doesnt need to be anything fancy , elaborate,or expensive.

Zillions of batteries get charged doing "everything Wrong",,,and do just fine anyway,,or at least apparently Good Enough.

But a few small principles can be Better for Bike,it's Battery,,the Charger,the bike's Storage Area,,and owner's convenience ,safety,,and pocketbook.

Quick recap:
**Smaller/Slower Charger is generally Better
**Mind Batt Water Level,,stick with actual Distilled Water to add
**A cheap Timer MIGHT offer convenience & may add maintenance efficiency
**Mind the Battery Vent's Condition And Position
--Under Riding Conditions
--And,,under Parked > Batt-Charging conditions

So,,Just some ideas that may be of use in certain instances.

Take care.

Motorbike Battery Charger?

Duong H

I'm a complete noob who's just got a Honda CBR125r from another owner. This morning when I tried to ride it, the bike did not start. I supposed the cause was the battery, since the previous owner had warned me that the charge might be quite low.

Just want to know what I should do. Should I replace the battery? or should I get a charger? Please give your opinion. All comments will be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

By the way, I found a battery identical to mine on ebay.
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Battery-CTX5L-BS-YTX5L-BS-KTM-450-530-EXC-F-EXC-R-electric-start-2005-2011-/190727917308#ht_852wt_1163

and also a charger.
http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=290821746789

are they compatible?

Answer
You need low amps. around 2 would be fine. I use an old bag phone charger but you could hook it up in series with another system. too fast charging will ruin the battery. Does this bike have a kick start? Even if you have a tiny bit of juice in the battery it should still run and charge itself.

i want to buy a electric bike ranging between 30000 to 40000 rs . it should be electric moped with no pedals.?

ashu

it should be economical.no need to wear helmet and need no licence

Answer
I don't know how close you are to a Walmart in india, but you can order a izip or ezip electric bike for around 25000 to 45000 rs.

Order it off their website and have it shipped to the nearest store location for free. It does have pedals but it is actually better transportation then an equally priced scooter.

how much does an 1200w electric bike cost if u charge it all day?

Q. an roomate of mine has an electric bike an the electric bill jump from 280$-420 is that possible

Answer
Hi, walker. The answer u wanted depends on the cost per unit kilowatt in your country. Because, electrical energy=w*t where w is the power consumed and t is the time in seconds. If you charge your bike a whole day,it consumes 1728 kwh. If your rate per unit is 1, you have to pay 1728 for it. If u were in india, rate per unit is Rs.0.75 and you will be paying Rs.1298 for it. Whats better 2012 kx250f or 2012 250 sxf?

I'm getting a new bike, i currently own a crf230f, and people tell me I am very skilled, I'm 14 and 6'3. Which bike would suit me, and please don't say get a yamaha or a honda, because I know I want one of these two bikes.
Cost doesn't matter btw.

Answer
you cant be very skilled if you ride a crf230. that bike will hold you back from you full potential. not baggin you just sayin, you can only get so good on a bike like that. KTM four strokes are behind the eight ball. the 11 isnt "better" than the 12 some people just prefer it over the newer model because they dont like the new linkage although the electric start is pretty mint. every seems to have different opinions and the general opinion is the kwaka is better. for 12 it has two injectors which gives heaps more power than the gutless 2011 model. they sorted the suspension and its pretty sweet. id say the kawi is better bike and cheaper to run. when you say money isnt a problem, you mean your parents are paying for every thing? 14 year olds dont have that type of money. when i was 14 the best i could do was a 2001 yz250f. the suzuki is probs the best bike and yamaha is mid way but is by far the most reliable. i bought a 2010 yamie for that reason only. no blocked injectors, no busted cranks like honda, and well over 100 hours out of piston and rings if you look after it. if just between green and orange, go the green. its better and way cheaper to run. the ktm is stupidly expensive to run if keeping it geniune. out of all bikes, go suzuki or yam. suzuki is the best, yamaha last the longest. to put ktm into perspective, dungey went to ktm and said the bike simply isnt competitive so he and roger built a hole no bike. dungey is not on a official ktm bike, it just has kato stickers on it. saying you are very skilled at 14 and on a 230 make you sound cocky by the way. you prob just ride fire trails. very skilled is lorreta lynn stuff. if you were skilled you would what you want from a bike. id just stay with any Japanese bike, since your comming off one, it takes slightly different ride style to get the kato working. oh and ktm has got pathetic bottom end so if ou ride tight stuff, stay away from kato.

best honda dirt bike for beginner?

I am 10 and a very skilled biker.I am kinda good but need a electric start.I am 4 foot 5 and 60 pounds.
I need a good price and need a cool looking dirt bike.I been recommended to ride a 50 or 80 but that dosent matter if i could i would like it to have good stock gas tank,Good engine, good springs, and a nice good pair of brakes. Please only experienced riders. The profile picture is not me. its my mom.
please be a 2012.

Answer
Ummm... Kinda hard to say. Which 2012 Honda doesn't have a good stock gas tank, engine, springs (suspension right?), and a nice pair of brakes? I personally wouldn't buy a 2012 dirt bike simply because you can get one a few years old for darn near lot half the money. You need a good price, but it's got to be a 2012, right? Why not a used 2010? You need electric start, you're 4'5", so you automatically need a detuned trail bike, like a CRF80F. Oh, almost forgot, it's gotta be cool looking. I say get pops to buy a cheap used 2002-ish XR80R, or a 50, whatever fits you best, and get some seat time.

Should probably go with Cody on this one.

New mountain Bike...Help?

John

I am looking at buying a new mountain bike and converting it to electric...I was thinking about getting the Mongoose Status 3.0 but I couldn't find a single review except on Amazon...any suggestions?
I'm 13, about 120 (I know I'm a lightweight) and 5' 6"...
The reason that I want to convert a mountain bike to electric is because I do a lot of rough street riding, and a hybrid just won't do the trick. Also, I didn't mean full electric, just a lightweight hub motor for use on longer rides. So eff off about the Lego crap...it's a serious question.
Also, I don't really need advice about the electric components, I know my stuff about that.

Answer
Converting it to electric. No. Don't do this. Spend you money getting a nicer bike with less friction and you can go much faster. Or just buy a cheap, old scooter. Why are you doing this? Project?

If you're going to be using it as a mountain bike, it need not be electric, as that's dangerous. If you're using it as a scooter, it need not be a mountain bike: hybrid's. If this is a project and you're 13 and not rich, I'd pick a different project. One of the Lego Robots would make a good project with electricity(i.e. Lego's Mindstorm). Provide more info and I will too.

Kids get so angry these days.

I need to buy electric bikes online. I want a good site?

Dirt bike question?!?

Amanda

I was wondering if anyone experienced in dirt bikes could help me out.

I am looking to buy a dirt bike but im not sure what one I should get.
I mostly want the back for track riding and not for trail riding. I am a female 5'1 and 100 pounds. I do not want to get a beginners bike but would rather have one I can keep for years to come. I do have a small amount of experience in riding. I was looking more towards a Yamaha but any brand could work.
I want a fast back with a good amount of power. Any help would be much appreciated.
Oh and im 19 almost 20 if that makes any difference.
What about something like a YZ 250F or YZ 250?? Not sure whats better though 2-stroke or 4.

Answer
The seat height on the YZ 125s and 250s will be too much for you. They are almost 40 inches. You will never be able to touch the ground. The ideal situation is sit on the seat and at least be able to touch your toes to the ground on both sides.

Check out the 2013 TTR125 LE 34" seat height, front disc brake, 4 stroke and electric start. Probably would work good for you.

Answer
Both are fun little bikes and if taken care of, maintenance-wise, both will be fun little bikes for a long time.
Over the years I've found that while Yamaha brand is a bit cheaper to buy into their maintenance is a little higher, not so much as the cost per part but that they just wear a tad faster.

Go have fun on either.

I'll give you a hint: Hub motors have some disadvantages compared to motors that drive the bicycles chain, namely low speed thrust for climbing steep hills with heavy loads. But that never actually becomes a factor because your speed never drops too far when you ride an electric bike. The good outweighs the bad when it comes to hub motors.

I recommend Crystalyte 5000 series hub motors. And absolutely pay a little extra and get lithium batteries. The lighter weight means longer range and better performance, and they pay for themselves in the long run because they have a longer life span.

It's going to cost you some money if you want the best quality. If you don't like the sticker shock, walmart sells an electric bicycle you can search for on their website. It's dirt cheap and it will last a few years if you take care of it.

electric bike advice?

Eddie

hi guys i was curious about a few things and thought, "well i might as well ask", so here i am. lets say you dont finish your battery, are you still supposed to charge it every night? ar am i supposed ot let the battery drain out? and what type of brake should i have, the regular v brake or the disk? ive been told both ways so im not sure which one is better... last but not least, i was told that the company "Gold Model" was very good but not so known, but i was wondering is mabye someone knew if it is good and what are its bad sides? the more information the better:)

thanks
Eddie

Answer
Batteries in an electric assist bike are similar to those in a cell phone. They will last a LOT longer if you drain them down to near zero & then recharge again.

For general purpose riding, disc brakes are NOT needed. Disc brakes are only needed under the most adverse conditions - such as mud, muck & a LOT of rain.

Good electric assist bicycles cost about 2K or more. For that same amount of money, you could buy 3 or more really good "fitness bikes".
http://www.raleighusa.com/bikes-road-fitness-cadent-cadent-2

I wouldn't own an electric assist bike. What happens if the battery should go down miles from home? You are stuck pedaling a VERY heavy bicycle home again. Meanwhile...a fitness bike or even a road bike is very light & geared to climb hills easily.

I am looking for an electric bike for exercise for under $500. I want electric because my area is very hilly and I want to get exercise but I'm just not in shape enough to make it up the hills without some help. Ideas for the best in my price range?

Answer
Forget the electric bike they are hard to pedal and using the motor wont give you any exercise. If you want exercise get a used stationary bike off of Craig's list or better yet go to the local bike shop and get a good hybrid bike. It will take time to be able to climb hills, if you have to get off and walk.

With respect to converting your bike to electric, you have 3 ways to go:

A hub motor kit
a sneaky crank motor kit
or a friction motor kit

There are also many home made conversions that use the chain drives:

How old do you have to be to take scooter lessons?

Q. I am 14 and was wondering if I am able to take scooter lessons to get my licence when I'm 16? Simple answer with good information will be best answer :-) thank you.

Answer
At 14 you can legally ride a 200W electic scooter ( with pedals) or an electric bike on the road, you do not need a license or mot or insurance ( though advisable) they do not need DVLA reg and you can legally ride them on cycle routes
Top speed is limited to 12 mph. But this is faster than the cars driving through central london
http://morakot.b2bage.com/product-bicycle/778344/200-250-500w-48v20ah-electric-scooter-motorbike-with-pedals-ls1-3.html

it has to be the 200W to be legal for a 14 year old in UK

Is a motorcycle practical?

Have a GRE

My husband and I need a second vehicle and I really want a motorcycle, but is it practical? I think Im safe to assume that a motorcylce gets better gas mileage than a car right? But by how much? Of course we will still have the car to get groceries and to haul around stuff. The motorcylce is mainly for me to get back and forth from work and school because i work in the city and my husband works closer. Oh and by the way Ive been riding dirt bikes and motorcycles for years so yes I know what Im doing lol. So, what do you think?

Answer
As a 'motorcycle only' kinda guy, I may be biased! But looking at it logically, yes it is.

To answer your sub-question, yes motorcycles get better mileage than cars - although it has to be considered what bike you're talking about. An average 500cc twin for example can get 50-70mpg, but a litre sized sportsbike really isn't much better than your average 'sensible' car. It very much depends how you ride of course - burying the needle in the redline or using maximum exceleration doesn't help! The main benefit (fuel wise) is that you make more efficient use of the fuel, by safely filtering you're not sitting stationery while fuel is being pointlessly burned away.

The other issue is weather, you really need good gear if you're going to make a go of it. You can buy an average textile jacket for £70-140, it will last 3 months of British weather. A good investment is paying a little more for long lasting and quality gear, such as Rukka. For many years I bought cheap waterproof trousers for £60'ish and they lasted 3 to 6 months. I've had my Rukka trousers for 3 years now and they've never let me down - and that includes in severe downpours. They cost £180 BUT they're guarranteed for 5 years - so do the maths and they work out cheaper! As yet I've not managed to save up for one of their £400+ jackets...that's just too much in one lump!

If you didn't have children I would even suggest selling the car and just hiring one when you need it. For £25 you can get a reasonable sized car for a day, all taxed, mot'd and insured. That's not applicable for you so I won't go on!

In this petrol dependant world we live in, you may even want to save money by considering an electric scooter for the shorter journeys your husband makes. It's not macho but large cc's and short journeys are not a good mix for maintaining reliability. An example (top end) electric scooter is a Vectrix (I may have mis-spelt), here is the spec:

100% charge takes 3 hours (cost equivalent to boiling the kettle for a brew)
80% in 2 hours)
60-70mile range
62mph top speed
re-charges going downhill
has a reverse gear(possible due to weight)
Informative display (precise)
3metre charging cable with typical 3 pin UK plug
£0.00 Road TAX.
Battery lasts approx 10 years
downside is price tag: £5,500. :-(

Motorcycles do need more TLC than cars, for example a chain driven (shaft is easier to live with, but boring) bike needs regular lubing and adjustment - although the latter is a more regular thing for powerful bikes. Then there's tyres - bikes do wear them out quicker than cars - and you can't go and buy cheap rubber as you need stability and grip.

Then there's the safety - "everyone on the road is an idiot". To ensure your children continue to have parents I would advise you enroll in some sort of 'advanced' training. There are many organisations and the police organise this themselves, although there are others. IAM and RoSPA immediately come to mind, These are very different in skill levels and IAM is generally much much easier than RoSPA, but nonetheless beneficial.

Just something to consider, hope that helps!

Keep the rubber side down!

Electric motor for bike?

Q. I have a recumbent bike - E-Z Sport. I am looking for an electric motor for it - for a good price. The best I can find is an E4 for $700. Can anyone help me find a better deal? I love biking but have become disabled and need a motor in order to contine biking with family.
I can't use a moped on bike trails. I want to continue biking with my family on bike trails.

Answer
I assume your U.S. have a look at this kit. The motor is very efficient (>95%). This will give you the best range out of what ever batteries you choose.

http://www.cyclone-usa.com/store.php?crn=199
You can buy the kit or just the motor/gearbox.

Being a recumbent you should be able to mount the motor near your idler pulley and keep your original chainrings. The down side to this method will be that you need to pedal when the motor is on. Depending on your disability you may wish to go with the freewheeling chainring that they supply with the kit.

A front hub motor will not work so well on a recumbent (not enough weight on the wheel)

Electric Scooters/Bicycles?

Uncle Chuc

Can you recommend from personal experience either a razor type with fat tires, or an electric power scooter or bicycle that has decent range, low weight and OK power? I want something I can take on the LA subway.

Thank you, and unlike many, I will remember to come back & give 10 pts for best answer. Thanks again.

Answer
First, you'll need to decide whether you want an electric bike or an electric scooter. Although an electric scooter costs less and is normally more compact than a bike, an electric scooter will be limited to a specific range, so once it runs out of power, you'll have no other choice but to walk. An electric bike is a bit more flexible, since you can pedal it (just like a normal bike) if it runs out of "juice". So if you have a slightly longer range (over 5 miles) you'll probably be better off with an electric bike.

From my experience, the Razors have a very short range - often less than 5 miles. These scooters are also quite small (in size and power) and are more suitable for children and small teens. If you're looking for a scooter, you might consider an EZIP. They have several high-powered models which are much larger and more suitable for teenagers and adults, with ranges up to 12 miles. Here's a list of products:

http://www.eco-wheelz.com/catalog/ezip-electric-scooters-c-2_34.php

If you'd like more range and flexibility, you might prefer an electric bike instead. They'll obviously cost more, but the big advantage is that you can pedal. There's a wide variety of options and styles to choose from. Price points vary from $499 up to around $2000. There's even several "folding bikes" which might be ideal for the subway...

Solar Panel wattage for my Electric Bike?

Solar Panel wattage for my Electric Bike?
I am looking to purchase an Electric Bike for transport to work. I work on an Organic farm and need to save some energy up those hills.

I need help figuring out what size solar panels would be needed to charge the battery, and whether its plausible.

I'm looking at Ebay in Australia as I am immigrating down there. I prefer to afford the foldable/portable solar panel system: 80 watt, 120 watt, 160 watt, but IF necessary a bit more.

300w 3 PHASE 36v ELECTRIC REAR WHEEL
THREE 12v 17ah SLA BATTERIES (Total 36v)

or

Motor: 250 Watt brush-less DC hub
Batteries: 24V/10Ah pack, valve regulated

can anyone out there help explain to me how to figure this out?

thanks :)

Answer
wow
i;d just say abandon all hope
get a regular bike and learn to ride it
get enough of your own juice to ride 'up hills'

you work in an organic farm and you want to get one of these silly heavy slow environment destroying resource wasting electric bikes?
dude

organic farm ===> real bike
seriously

otherwise you are in for some serious electrical engineering or spending about 3 times what a good, regular bike would cost

Answer
You will want to have some sort of voltage regulation.
If the panel voltage drops off you don't want to discharge the batteries on your bike.
And you would not want to overcharge your batteries.

Harbor Freight has a fold out 18 to 24 vdc solar recharger.(see link)

For a work/home commute you might not want to haul the charger around everyday.
Ask the folks at the farm if you could set up a solar charging station. They might even help.
I'd suggest a bicycle locker that has the panel on top and a couple spaces for bicycles with charging stations inside, out of the elements. Your employers may like the idea.

Dealers/Retailers of Electric Bikes and Scooters

Here's a partial list of retailers/dealers/resellers in the United States by telephone area code. Or use your web browser's Edit:Search function to find a city or state. Many of these retailers also offer repair services - even on brands they don't sell. We also list a few dealers in Canada, Australia, and Europe. For a more extensive list of electric bike businesses in the world, click here (http://energy.sourceguides.com/businesses/byP/ev/eBike/byGeo/byC/byC.shtml).

If you don't find a nearby dealer on this list, check with the manufacturer for the address of a retailer near you. Some manufacturers offer a "dealer locator" online. Also, here are two others sources of retailer listings:

Can anybody tell me how is the performance of electric bikes & cars .How much economical differece?

ROCKY

is there as compared to petrol bikes & cars

Answer
"Performance" has several factors. We generally think of this on the basis of an IC engine. As a result we tend to think of acceleration, handling and fuel economy. With battery electric vehicles there is also a reference to the vehicle range on a charge. While "range anxiety" is not usually a consideration in an ICE vehicle I do recall a time in the Australian outback where I would have given almost anything for a petrol station.

Generally it takes longer for electrons to flow into a battery than for gasoline to fill a gas tank. Electrons will flow into an ultracapacitor far more quickly and development of ultracapacitors that can hold sufficient charge will resolve the issue. Alternatively if they can be made cheaply enough they could be included with batteries and will extend the life of batteries and enable the vehicle to be quickly charged with energy (from ultracapacitors at "fueling" stations. Presently the best that an electric vehicle can offer is less concentration on fueling. You fuel at home. It takes seconds to start and stop a charge. The rest of the time you can be doing other things. Alternatively you must make special trips to fueling stations where someone must pay attention to the fueling process.

Batteries in an BEV (battery electric vehicle) are typically low in the vehicle. This improves handling as it lowers the center of gravity. Acceleration in electric vehicles is better than ICE vehicles due to full torque starting from 0 RPM in electric motors.1

Under present economic conditions an electric vehicle can save its owner approximately $1000 to $1400 per year in fueling costs in addition to the increase in performance.2 The vehicle except for batteries has a projected life many times that of ICE vehicles, possibly as much as 80 years as compared to the life expectancy of an ICE vehicle of about 10 years. Present batteries have a life expectancy of between 5 to 10 years and may represent 1/2 the investment in the vehicle. Ultra capacitors would have an expected life that exceeds the rest of the vehicle. There is some question about whether the electric vehicle will depreciate very rapidly with little residual value or if the addition of newer battery packs or even ultracapacitors would be like adding an addition to real estate and possibly restore or even exceed the original value of the vehicle. It may be possible that the vehicles will appreciate rather than depreciate like a very few of the classic ICE vehicles. 3

Bikes like the razor mx650?

George

I'm 16 now and I am looking for miniature dirt bikes that are preferably electric (i don't want to have to pay for gas) and are also under 300-400 dollars. I am having trouble finding anything that goes fasterthan the razor mx650 that is under $1000. I am also 6'0'' if that helps with anything because I don't want to be too big for it. Thanks a bunch!!!!

Answer
George, you have run out of options, given your height you really have only two left. Step up to something in a dirt bike that is suitable for your height and there fore will be petrol powered or to take up another sport. OK, you are only 16 years old but you have outgrown "miniature" dirt bikes and already be confident on a full sized 125cc engine rather than a look like you are caught in a time warp on an underpowered electric bike suitable for a 6 year old, or younger.

Sorry to be blunt but you are 16 years old, it's time to step up to a 16 year olds dirt bike...
