Do you use a key to start a motorcycle with an electric ignition?

I'm looking into getting this bike, a 2012 Suzuki DR-Z400S and I saw that it has an electric ignition (CDI) and I'm not exactly sure what this is or how it differs from the standard motorcycle ignition using a key. My question is; does a motorcycle with and electric ignition require a key to start?

2012 Yamaha Zuma not starting with the electric start?

My 2012 Yamaha Zuma 50 isn't starting with the electrical start it doesn't have a kickstart I live in Wisconsin and I'm a student and I haven't had it running since Thursday, February 29. I went to started yesterday on Monday and when I went to apply the front brake and press the electric start button the moped made a surging noise but didn't start I went to try and started again today and it's doing the same thing any ideas on how I can get this resolved? It's cold out here.

It appears to be the battery. The surging noise I would expect to be the solenoid. Just charge the battery or take it to a garage to be charged shouldn't cost much. This is why you always buy low displacement bikes with a kickstart. Hope this helped
