Hi, I just wanted some help on which electric bicycle conversion kit works best. I've been looking around so I can turn my bike into an 'alternative vehicle' to get to work and save on gas and the environment.

is a motor hub or the motor that connects to the chain better to use?

I have not seen a link, advertisement, or hint for Electric motor parts available to me for under around $225.00. Some of these "kits" do not even include any batteries.

However, in my area, people are throwing bikes out all the time. Others will pick them up from the trash and make new bikes from the parts.

I haven't seen anyone throw out an electric bike yet. They are still too uncommon here.

Electric Chinese bicycles can be purchased in the US from 400 up USD. They should be cheaper in India. Other brands will cost up to 3000+ USD. With the Tata costing about 2600 USD there is probably still a market for a 400 USD bike. Good luck.

Electric bicycle conversion kit vs electric bicycle?

Considering purchasing an electric bike kit. My main objective is it must be inconspicuous(I don't think their legal in NY?) and be able to tackle a 3mile hill on a 10mile trip to where I could recharge it. I think the kit less conspisious with the battery pack consealed in a back pack over the rear fender or saddle bags?

Personally I don't care much for motorised bicycles unless dealing with disabilities. A fit rider can usually ride about as quickly and for longer distances.

A kit is usually a better option since the motor can be removed with reasonable ease. And you can still ride the bike with it off. There are many different types of kits. Friction drives. Hub motors and one's that utilise the drive chain.

The friction drives tend to wear out your tyres quickly. The hub motors are a bit expensive and do not run efficiently at all speeds. The drive chain type are quite efficient and work through your gears so are more flexible. These ones are claimed to be greater than 95% efficient.

I know of similar designs but I don't think they are available in the U.S.

Still they are better than a car.

Section 3 adds a new section 1240 to the vehicle and traffic law, making the rules, regulations and provisions of the vehicle and traffic law applicable to bicycles applicable to electric assisted bicycles; makes the federal equipment and manufacturing requirements for bicycles or motor driven cycles applicable to electric assisted bicycles; and adds the following operational and safety requirements for electric assisted bicycles: electric motor disengagement criteria; all operators and passengers are required to wear bicycle helmets; and no-one under the age of 16 may operate or as a passenger on an electric assisted bicycle and establishes the civil fine and enforcement procedures for failure to wear a helmet.

Section 4 is the effective date.

So since I bought this completely crappy bike that sort of broke as far as the gears go, I was thinking it'd be fun to put an electric motor on it. I can't find many though, and when I find a kit it's like $2000. Are there any decent conversion kits so it's like a moped or something for a decent price?

Even if you find an electric motor kit at a better price, it is unlikely to be cheap. But the problem with your cheap bike will remain. The bike will be just as difficult to push along for the electric motor as it is for you. Adding the weight of the electric motor kit to an already heavy bike is going to make for an inefficient combination that probably won't have very much range, and when the battery runs down you are still going to have to be able to pedal, so the gears will have to be repaired. If you want an electric bike, buy one, trying to convert a clunker is probably a waste of money.

I understand 750Watts and/or 20mph speed without pedaling is the limit in most U.S. but, if I have a kit like that, is it worth it? Is the quality very bad? Who are trusted/reliable vendors of such kits? If I am guaranteed that speed and reasonable distance to get to school and back 20+20mi should i do it? Gas is $3.49 here, even a 250cc bike is like, expensive :(

Have seen some very sketchy products marketed from china that offgas chemicals

Your speed on level ground with no pedaling will vary. If you have more than 750 watts power or go over 20mph then the bike is not an electric assist bicycle, but rather legally considered a motorcycle.

The best battery is Lithium Iron Phosphate, but those will cost as much as the whole bike. The standard ebike comes with a sealed lead acid battery.

Is about $500 shipped to a store you choose for pickup. That is usually less exensive than doing a conversion yourself. The price for this bike has gone up a lot. I paid $375 for it 2 years ago.

I understand 750Watts and/or 20mph speed without pedaling is the limit in most U.S. but, if I have a kit like that, is it worth it? Is the quality very bad? Who are trusted/reliable vendors of such kits? If I am guaranteed that speed and reasonable distance to get to school and back 20+20mi should i do it? Gas is $3.49 here, even a 250cc bike is like, expensive :(

Have seen some very sketchy products marketed from china that offgas chemicals

I bought an electric bicycle kit from a company in Taiwan. After two recharges of the battery I find that the battery is defective. I end up having to send the $300 Battery back to Taiwan to get it reserviced. Is there any way to get the $75.00 in shipping charges reimbursed?

I'm planning out a DIY electric bike, and I want to use a direct drive system. I'm thinking about using a couple angle grinder gear boxes instead of chains and gears, but I need a CVT or IVT transmission. That's Continuous Variable Transmission or Infinite Variable Transmission.
It would be great if there is a power tool or some other low-cost component I could dismantle to easily get one of these transmissions. Go Karts use them, and they are cheaper than I would spend at a bike shop, but they're built really beefy for the kind of strain a Go Kart motor would put on it. Does anyone have a suggestion?

i have built my own elec bicycle .. i used a " hub motor bicycle kit . total cost of $230 for the kit including charger . throttle , and controller box Then you have to buy the batteries separate or you can buy " chain driven elec bicycle kits " you dont need transmissions using DC elec motors because they ae Variable speed motors . the " throttle " controls the speed. The higher the voltage of system the faster it will go. mine is 36 volt. 500 watt. with 6 - 12 volt 12 amp hour batts to make 2 -36 volt battery banks. next time i will try a 48 volt 1000 kit.

also google " electric bicycle youtube " and " elec bike forums " to learn more. Hub motors are much more efficient and quiter too. .

Congratulations on considering your ebike purchase. It is one of the best transportation decisions you can make; you will be healthier and have more money in your pocket.

A recent case study:
An 8 mile commute to work, for a employee..desk job,. works out at the gym twice weekly.

has stoplights, hilly terrain. usually picks up odds and ends at store on way home from work.

fairly dry climate, 6 month fairly comfy riding season; mornings 45F or better, afternoons seldom above 90F, usually mid 80's.

married, 1 child, two car family. : Driving in town 9000 miles per year on car #2. Going to cut that in half --down by 4500 miles --- most trips under 10 miles each way.

Car averages about 15 mpg in town so that is an even 300 gallons of gas, figure 3.50/gal... $1050.

not taking the car to work much any more, will save about $100 for six months insurance.

that's $1150. plus an oil change or two,. for $1200.. maybe a little more. Also looses about 5 pounds per month.

What are the horror stories I hear:

People that dont respect that these are Electric ASSIST bicyles and require you to pedal (but not hard), they treat them like mopeds, and they dont last. (however there are many people that understand that these are e-assist bikes and get 8 + years out of them)

People that overestimate their mechanical ability and try to install complicated kits themselve- yet they could not change a tire.

People that get scammed on ebay by trying to get a bargain on something they know little about.

So good luck. If you do your research, honest about your needs, get references about the bike and the dealer before you buy, you will be happy.

I would like to know if I am going on a 10 mile trip how much battery life I have left so, for example I can know whether I need to charge it up on the return trip or whether I have sufficient charge to get me home.

Specs: 408 watt brushed, 36 volt, 25 amp hour motor.

get a 'carbon pile tester'...it's a resistance type tester that'll give you a reading based on resistance on the life of the battery set. I work around construction equipment and we use one daily to diagnose charging system and battery sets...they'll tell you the state of charge and the voltage that's being put out.

that is why i have an electric bike . if gas bike was legal i would have one..
