Electric motor for bike?

Q. I have a recumbent bike - E-Z Sport. I am looking for an electric motor for it - for a good price. The best I can find is an E4 for $700. Can anyone help me find a better deal? I love biking but have become disabled and need a motor in order to contine biking with family.
I can't use a moped on bike trails. I want to continue biking with my family on bike trails.

Answer
I assume your U.S. have a look at this kit. The motor is very efficient (>95%). This will give you the best range out of what ever batteries you choose.

You can buy the kit or just the motor/gearbox.

Being a recumbent you should be able to mount the motor near your idler pulley and keep your original chainrings. The down side to this method will be that you need to pedal when the motor is on. Depending on your disability you may wish to go with the freewheeling chainring that they supply with the kit.

A front hub motor will not work so well on a recumbent (not enough weight on the wheel)

how would i mount an electric motor to a bike?

I plan on making an electric bike for a science project.

1.) my bike looks like this http://www.abikestore.com/Merchant2/graphics/00000002/escalade-bmx-black.jpg
just crappier.

2.) also, theres one spoke/sprocket/gear on the back wheel, how would i chain it up to it?

an please dont give me a philosophical answer like, just use some creativity and a wrench or something like that.

i was thinking drilling the motor to the bike or mounting the motor to a plate/board something flat and somehow put that on the bike.

just an idea.

Answer
The EASIEST install is an "in wheel hub motor"; you order the kit and replace the front wheel with a new one with a motor in it!

Then you hook up the hub motor wires to the controller, then the battery and throttle to the controller, and you are in business. all connectors would be keyed, so its kinda easy.

google on crystalyte, golden, or wilderness energy, the big three of ebike hub motors at a discount.

you could go with a rear Bionx, but that is about $1000 minimum.

good luck
