My Electric Bike has been stolen.?

Alison B

I live in Ipswich, Suffolk, UK.
What do thieves do with stolen bikes? Where do they sell them? I have phoned all the local Bike shops just in case someone brings it in. It was locked and chained to the bike stand.
Where would they sell it?

Answer
They sell it to buy drugs

How can I fix my electric bike?

Jay

I got an electric bike off craigslist and thought it was just missing a battery. Turns out, the bike wont even pedal. Any ideas on how I can fix it, to where I can at least pedal it like a regular bike?
http://www.electrikmotion.com/Hebb%20Step%20Through%20Electric%20Bicycles.htm that's the link to the kind of bike I have. Thanks!
What I mean by the bike wont pedal is that when you pedal the bike while on it the pedals will rotate but the tire will not. If you're not on the bike and hold the tail end in the air and rotate the pedal the wheel turns, it's like it's slipping the gear. No I didn't test ride it, I know better for the next time. Thanks so much for pointing out the obvious.

Answer
Find a dealer that sells and/or services that make of electric bike.

I want an electric pocket bike!!!?

Ba Gurk

I want one fast, and so far I've only found one that go's 30 mph... but they have stopped selling it right now. i was hoping one of you could tell me a website or place that sells similar ELECTRIC POCKET BIKES.

Answer
"Pocket bikes", electric or gas, in many locations are legally classified as "toys" from a legal and traffic perspective. That means that they are illegal to operate on the streets. And on sidewalks and trails too.

Non-pocket ebikes that are legal on streets are full sized bikes and are limited to under 20mph, and 750 watts which very few have.

In many locations, one must be 16 years old and have a drivers license to operate a legal ebike on the streets.

So that is why you are having trouble finding them; good retailers don't like being sued for selling inappropriate products.

Some of the above will be true for gas and electric scooters and other products too.

Check your local laws for what are legal products (for you) before parting with your money and getting into problems because some dealer did not tell you what you needed to know..

Sorry.

Electric bicycle experiences?

Dana1981

I recently ordered an electric bicycle:

http://www.northerntool.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_6970_200333249_200333249?cm_sp=Customer%20driven-_-Recently%20Viewed-_-Product%20Page

for my commute to and from work. It's about 13 miles each way and takes me about an hour on my regular hybrid bike. Making this ride twice a day can wear me out by the end of the week, particularly since I often have to go against a stiff headwind. Plus it's gotten as hot as 108°F this summer during my ride home.

Basically I'd like to cut down on the time and work it takes to make this trip, while still getting exercise and minimizing my greenhouse gas emissions. I should be able to recharge the batteries at work, so that will prevent them from getting discharged much more than halfway. I did some research, and this particular bike seemed fine and is relatively very cheap.

So I was wondering if anyone with some electric bike experiences had any tips about electric bikes and biking.
Yes I'm planning on pedalling essentially the whole route. The electric motor is simply to make the pedalling easier and make the trip quicker.
Good tips 1x1, thanks.

Answer
I've sold many different kinds of electric bikes in the shop, and some are good and others are not so good. The batteries don't last long on the inexpensive ones, so take good care of it. Charge it exactly as long as they recommend, exactly as often as they recommend. The motors are usually pretty good, you probably won't have any problems with it. I'd try to get different tires, something like the Kenda Kwest, 26x1.5 would be good. It'll make the whole thing a little easier and faster than the inexpensive tires that come on the bike, and that's the whole point, right? Unless you're a pretty good mechanic, I'd also have a shop assemble the bike. If everything gets adjusted properly from the beginning, it'll last a lot longer.

Are cops stern with electric bike laws in NYC?

R-man

I'm planning to purchase one of those e-bikes/scooters. I know that they are illegal in NY but I really don't care. I just want to ask my fellow e-bikers how frequent do you get pulled over by the popo, are they even anal about this trivial law? And of course how much would it cost me if I was to receive a ticket for the violation?
By the way, I live the suburb areas in Queens. (bayside)

Answer
I run an Electric Bike Shop and have sold about 50 electric bikes to people in New York state. I have not heard a single thing from any of my customers about cops bothering them. This is always a question I get about the legality of electric bicycles in New York, but most electric bikes look just like regular bikes and no police ever bother with them, in fact there are a number of electric bike companies based in new york. Product Description
For aspiring little Grand Prix champs, this mini motorbike - complete with cool racing decals and realistic sounds - is the most excitement this side of the checkered flag!

My boys ages 2 and 4 love this bike! My two year old hadn't gotten the concept of steering in 1 year of owning his tricycle but in a few minutes on a motorized bike he figured it out after running into enough walls. Originally I purchased this bike for my older son only and got my 2 year old a three wheel smaller version from another company that was supposed to go the same speed...it didn't. My older son was running 3 laps around my younger son litterally as they rode around the house. I didn't think that my younger son would be able to handle the bigger bike but to our surprise when my oldest turned his back he jumped on his bike and took off!...so we sent his bike back and ordered him the mini motorcross as well. I like that they have to master coordinating their feet and steering and the switch of forward and reverse...very user friendly for the kids.

Electric Bikes?

Q. Hi, for next christmas I was hoping to buy an electric bike.

However I dont know where I could get one from.

If you could please give me some links, advice, whats needed and costs for them I would be most greatful.

Thanks!
thanks alot...

Answer
There is no one "best" ebike for all situations, dont let anyone tell you different. There are many factors to consider, such as: the bicycle frame, your price range, your performance needs, your installation requirements, and after market service needs.

So lets take some well rated ebikes (all of which I have sold and still service) and compare them:

Giant suede-e (no longer sold, a few still available new, still have service and parts) a little low on power for big guys hauling large loads in tough terrain, BUT VERY Reliable and pretty light weight. Un modifiable. Turnkey- no installation issues and no service or parts issue. $1.1k

Cyclone Kit currrently sold on the internet and a few places across the US (Including me in Colorado) GREAT power. Can be a pain to install, so you have to have a specific bike for it to fit, and someone to help with or do the install unless you are pretty darn good with tools. good value, can make slight modifications, parts available, but not much service.

Bionx Kit, 36v more power than than Giant suede-e, lots of nifty hard to find features, Very bicycle-like for a kit, fairly pricy, easy install, parts available, some service. unmodifiable.

EZee bikes and kits, pretty reliable, good parts, some service, can be either a kit or a turnkey bike. moderate performance. a little pricey, but not a lot. minor mods.

Crystalyte. can be anything you want it to be, not real bicyle like. Lots of parts and internet service advise. reasonable price, controller less than the most reliable. You install- easier than a cyclone, harder than a bionx.

If you need the best performance for the money and you can work with tools and pick out your bike, then Cyclone might be best.

For today total turnkey, maybe an EZEE.

Really want to retain the bicyle feel & arent having extremes of demands- try Bionx.

With all ebikes, all connections are the biggest reliability issue, next are throttles then controllers unless stated above.

You will need to look at some discussion groups to get the best lowdown for your situation.

What are the best electric bikes in the United States of America?

Itai

I want to buy an electric bike with pedal assistance Help (pedaling) but allude to ask you to give me the best recommendation in my purchase, and I want to get the best performance for my invercion or purchase. Please do not recommend the most expensive since I can not buy, that is the most economical, good quality and good performance.
Wear days on the web looking and deciding but I'm afraid to fail and I'm afraid to screw up and lose my little money.
Optional comment: I'm interested in more of the (twenty inches) (20 ") (20 inch), which has good performance and speed and has no grill or carpetera a box to put it to a little shopping in the store and follow or hir my work for me.
People who help me and those who seek to give them a million thanks for loving help and also I thank you all for darrme Yahoo and others the opportunity to be here.

Answer
I am sorry to say that e-bike quality increases as price increases. There are no exceptional values.

The main quality variation that can be noticed is the weight and quality of the battery. Many bikes that are low priced can have the trouble traced to it. Regrettably, one cannot simply swap to a better quality battery to take advantage of a low priced bike.

Please do NOT purchase an e-bike online. There are too many things that may require attention and many bike shops will not deal with bike they didn't sell. Take your time, find shops in your area that sell e-bikes, and discuss their features with the sales person.

Why have ebikes, electric mopeds and electric scooters largely disappeared from North American cities?

Who is "killing" the Electric Bike (aka Electric Scooter) in US and Canada? Many retail shops have closed, from Boston to Vancouver. North American manufacturers (Nova Cruz, Wavecrest, Bionx, Egovehicles) have gone under or are selling much less than they did before.

In comparison, in most of Asia, sales of ebikes are surging? Is it the economy collapse? Is it government? Is it the big auto companies? Is it battery companies? Is it some other factor?

Answer
All these smaller vehicles are disappearing mainly because of our affluence. As all the household get affluent they do not want smaller bikes and cars and go for bigger ones. Also it creates a fashion and so the not so affluent also aim to buy it. In due course there is no takers and they die a natural death.
Take the case of China where a decade ago there were thousands of cycles in the main cities and now they are all replaced with bikes and cars. So is the case of India. Once it was having a lot of 100 cc bikes but now it is n the decline. So it is the life style and not the government or oil companies who are responsible for it.

I was thinking about putting a motor on an electric motocross bike so it goes faster, the only problem is is that the motorbike has suspension in the back and I was wondering if a chain driven motor can be mounted so when I hit a bump with the suspension the chain won't pop off or become stressed.

Answer
The sprocket needs to be roughly lined up with the center-line of the swing arm and not far from the pivot point. Just a random gas engine has nearly a zero percent chance of working since the output shaft is usually centered and too high on the engine. That, and you would have to find a clutch for it, make sure the sprockets line up perfectly, and fabricate a mounting system. You would also have to make a functional gas tank unless there was one mounted to the engine.

By the time you were done, you could have sold your old bike and bought a real dirt-bike. I see older used ones for sale in my local CL for $500-1000 all the time.

i am trying to make an electric bike for my granddaughter. can anyone give me some suggestions on how to accomplish this? what size motor would i use? can the battery be recharged while in use? any info would be appreciated.

Answer
To answer your question, 24 to 36V would be more realistic. 12V will be a very slow e-bike (maybe that's what you want?)

That said, this is a classic make-vs-buy proposition. Let me hazard a guess that you want this by Christmas, and it needs to work, right?

I suggest buy.

The reason is, motors for e-bikes are much more robust than those you might find in a hand tool, kid's ride-on toy or a starter. A typical e-bike motor will be 500W or more sustained duty, and so will have the extra mass and cooling to handle it. A tool or starter motor just isn't built for that kind of duty and will fail in short order.

Plus, the kit will come with a speed control - and if done right the controller will do regenerative charging too.

Lucky for you, there's lots of e-bike kits, both the in-hub style and chain drive. Looks like they run about $400, with the bulk of the cost being the motor and battery.

First link below is to a site that sells both parts and complete kits. (Lots more if you google "electric bike kit" - second link is just an example).

BONUS: sub-8 second electric drag bike (last link.) Just because.

Answer
Get your rpm ratios (drive to driven) figured out first. This may be a non-starter. You would be better off using a belt drive with a slip clutch pulley mounted on the drive shaft. Then ratios are not a big issue because the belt slips enough to give you variable and workable ratios as you vary the clutch tension.. A cobbled up chain drive can be bad news. Too much stress and it breaks. That could tear your leg open. As for the suspension, the idea would be to have new things follow the exact path and position as the old.things. If that is not possible, then you will need someone who can cut, reposition and weld. By the time that is done, you may wish you had just sold the bike and bought a bike with a gas engine. Back in the day, we did this with bicycles. Our rear wheel pulley was a second rim welded on the rear tire rim.

Good electric bikes start at around $1500 and go up from there. Even decent conversion kits are about $1000. Anything lower than that price point will be a slow, disappointing, heavy pile of junk.

Does anyone know where to get a good looking electric bike for around $400 in or close to philadelphia?

Shock

I need an electric bike for parking issues(tickets)..I am able to spend up to 400 but i also want a good looking bike hahaha..anyone know of a place in or close to the philadelphia area?

Answer
Good electric bikes start at around $1500 and go up from there. Even decent conversion kits are about $1000. Anything lower than that price point will be a slow, disappointing, heavy pile of junk.

Just sell your car, you aren't responsible with a motor vehicle anyway.

Why have ebikes, electric mopeds and electric scooters largely disappeared from North American cities?

sally

Who is "killing" the Electric Bike (aka Electric Scooter) in US and Canada? Many retail shops have closed, from Boston to Vancouver. North American manufacturers (Nova Cruz, Wavecrest, Bionx, Egovehicles) have gone under or are selling much less than they did before.

In comparison, in most of Asia, sales of ebikes are surging? Is it the economy collapse? Is it government? Is it the big auto companies? Is it battery companies? Is it some other factor?

is it poss to run a bicycle or small motorcycle on 12 volts dc?

oldfarrrrt

i am trying to make an electric bike for my granddaughter. can anyone give me some suggestions on how to accomplish this? what size motor would i use? can the battery be recharged while in use? any info would be appreciated.

Answer
99.9% sure you wont find someone byu you who wants one. Post on to Craigslist, you get great results.

How popular are electric bicycles or bikes now?

Awsome

Would it be worth it selling electric bicycles or bikes on a website? Give your opinions and how they compare to mopeds/scooters in sales. Thanks!

Answer
I think people are buying more scooter and mopeds then they are bikes. I'd say it probably wouldn't pay to sell bikes on the internet.
