I'm thinking about buying a used one to mountain bike with for exercise. I would only use the motor if I get too tired to pedal back because I'm just breaking into mountain biking and I don't have the best stamina. Do you recommend this?

No. Mountain bikes are fairly heavy on their own. Much heavier than a road bike due to the fact they usually have suspension parts & some have disc brakes. Now add on an electric motor & you've got one heavy mother. The charge in electric bikes is usually short. It always seems to run out of power in the wrong place at the wrong time. Then what? You are stuck pedaling this behemoth back home under your own power. Yep...that'll give you your exercise for the day!

Do you even plan to go off-road at all? If not, look into a quality road bike or performance hybrid or even a straight hybrid. A person usually tires out from cycling by riding around in a gear that is too high. Thus they are "pushing" on the pedals instead of "spinning" at a rate of 70 - 90 rpm. This is called cadence. By using gears that are easier to "spin" rather than "push" you will last much longer on the bike, build stamina, build your heart, tone leg muscles & reduce body fat with a proper diet. An electric bicycle is basically a smaller scooter its a regular bike with an small engine to assist riders but its a lot heavier than regular bicycles . Your not going to notice the weight while riding because the motor is doing most the work for you if you want the exercise factor get a road/hybrid bicycle or a thinned tires on a MTB shall do it .

I am 230 lbs,and have ridden this bike 4K miles over 3 years and NO problems other than flat tires.

2.) How many miles can you typically travel on one without having to pedal? I have to pedal on this bike. I can go 30miles on this ebike designed in 2002 and costing $1300.

3.) When going up a steep hill, is the bike powerful enough to move upward without having to pedal at all?
Again, this ebike requires me to pedal, as you should on most ebikes. I have arthritis and asthma, but I can make it up a 7% hill at 7mph carrying 20lbs of groceries

upgrading an electric scooter any advice?

I drive a 500 watt TaoTao ATE 501 and it only has a top speed of 20 to 21 miles per hour and only drives 10 miles per charge(I think) Is there any upgrade parts I can get for this scooter so that it can drive 30 maybe 35 miles per hour and get better battery life? I'm tired of being on a street legal scooter/moped and not being able to keep up with average city traffic flow. I hate being tailgated because I'm driving slower. I think it runs on 48 volt batteries and uses three of them. Not sure about the control box because its kinda hard to get to.

First you have to realize that those 500 watt electric scooters are really just heavy cheap electric assisted bikes. The TaoTao ATE 501 weighs about 200 lbs and that's why it's so slow. If you want any reasonable performance, you use the fold out pedals at least for acceleration, it also recharges the batteries slightly.

I suspect you have a 36 volt system with three 12 v lead acid batteries wired in series. It would be a good idea to have each of those batteries checked out separately. Lead acid batteries can be tricky and it only takes one to be in poor shape for the whole bike to suffer.

The most obvious upgrade you could do is wire in another three lead acid batteries in parallel. Nothing else would need changing but you would have to find a location to put the batteries.

The next possible upgrade is to replace the batteries with expensive lithium ion or lithium polymer batteries which are convenient because they are available in similar voltage levels. Their charging procedures are similar but not identical so you may be able to get away with not changing any of the charging mechanisms. The biggest problem with this is the cost.

A larger motor probably won't do you much good and may require custom fabrication of the motor mounts but you may be able to find a more powerful motor in the same form factor. In general, most electric motors can be operated at higher voltages with the only consequence being overheating of the motor and wires, the wires can be increased to thicker wires and you could try to get more cooling to the motor but this would really only allow you to have short bursts with the possibility of burning something out. Of course doing so means changing the battery layout and adding more batteries.

The best solution would be to upgrade to a proper light weight electric assisted bike but they run about $2,000 or more, roughly double what the scooters cost. Maybe find a used bike and put in a 500 watt conversion kit... At least with the bikes, everyone expects you to be slow.

The 500 watt scooters are not what I would call street legal, just exempt from regulations. It takes a 150 cc scooter to be freeway legal and a 250 cc scooter to actually be safe at freeway speeds and any scooter with more than 50 cc's must be licensed and registered as a motor vehicle. Those I would call street legal once licensed. You might be better off with a 50 cc gasoline scooter, those are usually exempt from regulation too. The old smoky two cylinder ones had a lot of power, about double what the new four cylinder ones have but even the new 4 cylinder ones would be four times the power of the 500 watt electric scooter. If you want to be environmentally friendly, make ethanol from rotten fruits that you get from the grocers for free.

Bike tire inflation?

Hi,

I have a racing bike with 700c tires (120 psi max) and the tubes packaging say not to inflate with a compressor. I have a hand pump but no way can I get that high, I can't even get it high enough for a proper ride (it's an old pump).

So I was wondering, why does my tube packaging say not to pump with an air compressor? Is there a special reason and what would happen if I do? I need to put air in my tire and don't feel like buying a expensive air pump.

Compressors intended for inflating car and truck tires can provide so much air so quickly that you can damage a bicycle tire and perhaps even the rim. Before I learned this from the bicycle pundits, I inflated my bike tires at the local filling station time after time without a problem. Be careful, because the pressure gauges on car/truck inflation compressors are not always accurate. The floor hand pump is best. Mine was about $20 at Performance. I also have a small electric home compressor that I've used for many years without a problem. The hand compressor is faster and easier for bikes.

I got a touring bike but I live on dirt roads and dirt roads make me really tired. Im looking to make my bike electric so I wont get tired on the dirt roads then pedal the rest of the way on paved roads. How much does the battery cost and the electric motor cost? Im only gonna use it for 4 miles on my dirt roads then the rest of the way I pedal.

before you try to make your bike electric (which I agree is probably prohibitively expensive), there are a few things that you can do to make your ride on dirt roads easier. First, are you using your lowest (easiest to pedal) gears, or are you using a high (difficult to pedal) gear? If it is the latter, start using your lowest gears. If you are using your lowest gears and it is still wearing you out too badly, go to your local bike shop and have your gearing changed so you have lower gears. With the right gearing, an electric bike should be unnecessary. Most bikes come with gearing that is too high anyway. You may also want to consider larger tires, if the reason you are tired out is from getting beaten up by an uncomfortable bike.

What is the recommended tire pressure as by the owner's manual for this vehicle? The higher the pressure, like in bicycles, the higher the rate of leakage. My bike pressure is 75 psi and I have to add air each and every time I ride it, just prior to starting, I have an electric pump powered from the cigarette lighter outlet. Smaller tires do have higher pressures. If you ride every week and you check the pressure each week and each week the pressure is OK then you can go to checking every two weeks. I would check the tires for damage, cuts, general condition as they do a lot of work over non paved trails before you ride it just to make sure they are OK to ride. Do you carry a spare and tools? Best to be safe before you get going. OK? Good question. Best regards.

How long do you think a starter engine will last if used to power a childs electric car.?

I have the bright idea to use a very powerful harley starter engine to power a car that I will weld together. I'm thinking of using my bikes orig tire with spockets in the rear and two smaller wheels in the front. Then I'll bolt in a 5 point harness (baby seat) onto the frame. I'll give it some whiskey bars and paint it flat black. Also if anyone could give me pointers on how the thottlw would work, that would be nice too. It will run off of a 12 volt. I've seen this size starter push a road king, so I assume that under light use, the starter could go a long way before burning up. FYI, this will be safe. I'm going to give it a 3 piston brake soft tail brake.
the first guy mentioned "because it has three speeds"...on the washing machine engine. I'd like to contoll the amperage that the motor is getting, so I will be contoling the speed and that is where I'm getting the idea that it will have a longer life span...whata u think?

A starter motor is incredibly powerful but not a great choice as the power requirements to make it run are atrocious, using a large lead acid would probabl only last about 2-3 minutes and lead acid is pretty much your only choice when running this much current. Your better bet is a DC motor that is higher voltage such as those used for electric bike kits,a dryer motor would be useless because its a DC motor. You may find a good powerful DC motor on ebay for less then a hundred bucks.

How to fix a flat tire on electric moped?

I got a mini electric moped from one of my friends just to screw around on. The back tire is messed up and will not even air up. Is there something i can put in is that will harden the whole thing or anything at all i can do. I dont really want to buy a whole new tire for it. I just want something to fix it or make it so it wont be flat. Any ideas?

Kz, there should be a tube in the tire, remove the wheel first. Have someone who has patched a bike tire before show you how to remove the tube, and repair the tube with a glue patch.

Then air it up & check the tube for leaks with a spray bottle of soapy water, replace the tube & wheel, and go.

How do you put a chain driven motor on a bike with suspension?

I was thinking about putting a motor on an electric motocross bike so it goes faster, the only problem is is that the motorbike has suspension in the back and I was wondering if a chain driven motor can be mounted so when I hit a bump with the suspension the chain won't pop off or become stressed.

Get your rpm ratios (drive to driven) figured out first. This may be a non-starter. You would be better off using a belt drive with a slip clutch pulley mounted on the drive shaft. Then ratios are not a big issue because the belt slips enough to give you variable and workable ratios as you vary the clutch tension.. A cobbled up chain drive can be bad news. Too much stress and it breaks. That could tear your leg open. As for the suspension, the idea would be to have new things follow the exact path and position as the old.things. If that is not possible, then you will need someone who can cut, reposition and weld. By the time that is done, you may wish you had just sold the bike and bought a bike with a gas engine. Back in the day, we did this with bicycles. Our rear wheel pulley was a second rim welded on the rear tire rim.

is it ok to put a 21 speed bike wheel on a 24 speed bike to replace the tire?

I need have 8 cogs on my rear wheel, can I use a different wheel that has 7 cogs? I would like to use this electric bike kit but it comes with the wheel being 7 speeds. Can I still shift all 7 speeds with this new wheel, just not the 8th, or will all the cogs be different sizes so I cant use the pedals at all?

It's a bit of a hack, and not something that's easy to just switch back and forth on.

7 and 8 speed both use the same size of chain, so you won't have any immediate problems just swapping the wheel. However, the distance between cogs is different, so your derailleur will not function correctly - it might jump two gears, it might not shift at all when you do, and it may throw your chain entirely. At a minimum, you'll need to adjust your limiter screws to keep it from throwing the chain, but ideally, you should be replacing the shifting mechanism.

A cruiser is different than a comfort bike. It usually has but one gear, sometimes 3. Often called beach cruisers because that's where they originated...on the boardwalk of beaches to ride on flat land - not needing any gears.

Comfort & Hybrid bikes are similar. The main difference being a comfort bike usually has the traditional 26" tires. Hybrids have taller & thinner 700C tires that roll easier & go a bit faster. Hybrid bikes have become very popular because they are versatile. You sit in a comfortable upright position, have many gears to handle hills, yet can go slightly off road on trails of packed earth or finely crushed gravel/stone. With a hybrid, you're basically getting a combination of a road bike, a mountain bike & a comfort bike. The best of all three. That's what I ride & recommend for most people looking for an all around good bike.
