What type of motor should I be looking for my electric bike conversion?

Gaby

I've taken up the project of converting my bike into an electric one. But, unfortunately I'm not completely familiar with the voltage and watt hours of motors, and I wanted to double check with others before purchasing.

ATTENTION: I am asking what voltage or watt hour motor I should get, and I'd like it to be an electric scooter motor or something of the sort. And yes I've looked into the motor hub, but to me that's cheating. I want to start from scratch completely. Not buy something that makes it too easy.

-My bike is an Octane 24 Diamondback that weighs about 30 pounds if I am correct.
-I weigh about 120 pounds (Don't worry, this bike is about 4 years old and I'm 14 as of now and
since it's such an old one I thought about converting it).
-So roughly 150 pounds all together.

With this weight in mind, I wasn't sure what to purchase.

-I'm not going to be traveling very far with this bike. Maybe 10-15 miles at the most, but often way less than that on most days.
-Yet I don't want to get in the process of having to charge it so constantly (If that has anything to do
with the motor, seems more battery wise).
-I would like to travel at a nice pace. Not slow or too fast but medium.
-Also I would be riding this bike up and down many small hills because of the roads and terrain in
my community.

So this is mainly all the info I think is needed for this assessment of my situation.
Please, help me out. I would like to have this project finished soon because of the changing seasons.

ATTENTION (Making sure you understand this): I am asking what voltage or watt hour motor I should get, and I'd like it to be an electric scooter motor or something of the sort. And yes I've looked into the motor hub, but to me that's cheating. I want to start from scratch completely. Not buy something that makes it too easy.

Also, if you have any other info or tips on this conversion it would be a great help and I would greatly, greatly appreciate it.

Thank you!

Answer
look for electric car clubs near you, talk to the members and ask questions. check out the sites provided. research is very important before you start your project. my hybrid electric motorcycle is listed at EV Album. I used a 48 volt battery system. have fun with your project

Electric Vehicle - Bike?

Hello, I'm doing a science fair project on an electric bike conversion, and I'm planning to convert it by myself. But I'm a relative beginner, so can anybody advise me on what battery/motor to use in order to produce the most efficiency? How many batteries? How much would the battery and motor cost?

Also, do I have anything else to buy?
Thank you for your time.

Answer
If you want to take the easy route, there are kits available to convert a regular bike to electric.

You can use sealed lead acid (SLA), nickel metal hydride (NiMh), or lithium ion batteries. SLA are cheapest and have the shortest lifespan, lithium ion are most expensive and last longest. They generally use something on the order of one 36V12ah battery.

Generally the motor is in the neighborhood of 400-500 Watts.

Depending mostly on what kind of battery you choose, the whole thing can cost anywhere from $300 to $2000.
