Why have ebikes, electric mopeds and electric scooters largely disappeared from North American cities?

Who is "killing" the Electric Bike (aka Electric Scooter) in US and Canada? Many retail shops have closed, from Boston to Vancouver. North American manufacturers (Nova Cruz, Wavecrest, Bionx, Egovehicles) have gone under or are selling much less than they did before.

In comparison, in most of Asia, sales of ebikes are surging? Is it the economy collapse? Is it government? Is it the big auto companies? Is it battery companies? Is it some other factor?

All these smaller vehicles are disappearing mainly because of our affluence. As all the household get affluent they do not want smaller bikes and cars and go for bigger ones. Also it creates a fashion and so the not so affluent also aim to buy it. In due course there is no takers and they die a natural death.
Take the case of China where a decade ago there were thousands of cycles in the main cities and now they are all replaced with bikes and cars. So is the case of India. Once it was having a lot of 100 cc bikes but now it is n the decline. So it is the life style and not the government or oil companies who are responsible for it.

Absolutely, (as long as you're within 15 miles from your work) - any time we can find something that will save the environment - I say, go for it! Plus they're pretty nice looking.
But I would first check your state motor vehicle laws before buying it just to be sure that you can drive it on the roads. Some states are funny about electric mopeds and scooters.
If you're in Canada (at least in Ontario) some electric bikes/scooters that have operating pedals don't even have to be registered.
Also, don't pay much over $650 (with shipping). This site has the best deals and shipping is low,

You will find that in most places it is not legal to ride motorized vehicles on sidewalks. This would include an electric motorized vehicle.

The real question is weather it is enforced and how safe is it to do so? Is it being inconsiderate of pedestrians trying to use the sidewalk? Someday we may finally realize that there are lots of ways of traveling and not just walking or riding a car.

While there may not be so many places that you might get one from a shop nearby, you should easily be able to shop and get one on the web. This is a site below for an example.

I'd say no, they are not illegal. Mainly because they don't really exist so there would be no laws restricting them. You could possibly get a ticket for noise. Just like EV electric cars. There are so few of them that the government doesn't tax them for road usage. Yet....

Maybe in Canada - going 18 to 22 mph is good speed - but you'll not be able to take it on the street - you'd have to ride on the sidewalks! If you want to go that slow - get an electric bike - they've got kits now - under 400.00? I don't know - its a personal choice.

It depends upon what you mean by "full-electric car technology" and by asking "which countries"...

Electric cars are not a national phenomena. They are things. National policies can promote electric cars but to my knowledge no country has nationalized an electric car building company and is producing electric cars on their own. Corporations may give some a feeling of national pride or identity but many corporations are multi national and may hold allegiance to no country.

Countries and areas that promote electric cars with incentives are more likely to attract corporations that are making electric cars. Such companies are in some ways not very different than other corporations. If an area will provide certain grants, property, utilities, or tax incentives then companies are more likely to build a plant in that location. Having cheap labor and reasonable lines of supply are also a plus. Selling their products may require a different set of incentives to attract buyers.

A case in point may be "Better Place." http://www.betterplace.com/ This company does not make cars. They sell a battery swapping service. They have several international initial target locations including: Israel, Denmark, Australia and Hawaii, San Francisco and Canada. The nissan leaf was to be a part of their system and may be in the future. For now they are swapping batteries on the Renault Fluence ZE. http://www.betterplace.com/ By some measure this might be considered a "full-electric car technology," but to what country are you going to attribute this technology? Shai Agassi, the companies founder and CEO has lived in California and Israel.

The Tesla Roadster is an American company and a media success. It is now selling their cars internationally, but the actual number of vehicles sold is presently just over 1000.1 Their are many lessor known electric vehicle companies that may happily sell you a vehicle that is hardly a production run. For a full production run of a full electric vehicle (BEV: battery electric vehicle) that is fully highway capable in the US we are looking to the Nissan Leaf as a first. Zap vehicles have been built in China for years and sold by an American Company internationally as motorcycles but we might not necessarily put these in the same class as the Nissan Leaf. The same may be true of other of the ess expensive Chinese cars.

I would agree that the Volt is not a "full electric" vehicle, but it is more electric than the more parallel hybrid prius. From a purist point of view perhaps even a BEV is not a pure electric vehicle as it uses chemistry in the batteries. I'm not looking for the "official" or "sanctioned" response, I'm looking for an answer from just regular folks. Is it better to live in the US versus Canada? Is it better to live in Canada versus the US? What's it like to pay for heat, gasoline, food, etc.?

I am an American living in Canada. There are pro's and con's to living in either country. Taxes are much higher in Canada, food is much higher, gas is much higher, going to the movies is more expensive well just about everything I can think of costs more here in Canada. That being said, Canada is much more environmentally progressive than the US, wages are typically higher in Canada, the health care is good in Canada, employee benefits are better for most jobs and crime is much lower in Canada. Canada is more geared to the outdoors and have more biking and walking trails than I have ever seen in the US. Yes, it is expensive to heat your home in the winter here but it is much cheaper to cool your home in the summer. Our home doesn't even have an AC unit as we would only need it 1 or 2 weeks per year. Our gas/electric bill is usually 300-325$ per month in the winter and it is about 60$ in the summer. Winter is harsh in some areas of Canada and can last for 6 months of the year.
I really don't prefer to live in one place over the other. I am here in Canada right now because my husband is working here. Day to day life is basically the same.
I can't really compare the school systems between Canada and the US because our son won't start school here until next fall. They do not have Pre-K here in Canada. I am interested to see what it is like here because I am a former school teacher from the US.

I am a Canadian and will be getting my Bachelor of Arts degree from York University in Toronto, Canada. I have always wanted to become a teacher but I really want to move to Whitehorse (yes I know it sounds crazy!). How much on average am I looking at to rent a 2 bedroom apartment? What is the cost of living like there (cable, phone, groceries, etc.)? Do you need a car up there?

You are not crazy for wanting to get out of Toronto and into the most beautiful part of our country.

I lived in Whitehorse for 6 years, and on average for a 2 bedroom apartment I spent between $650-$800 a month. When searching for an apartment make sure you find one that heat is included, or at least electricity is included if it has electric heat. As you can imagine the heating costs are quite expensive in the winter. Kontiki Coconut Apartments is a good place to start looking. They own quite a few buildings in Downtown and Riverdale (the closest subdivision to downtown)

As for other expenses, cable and phone are no more expensive than the provinces--you can price them out at nwtel.ca. Bell is the only reliable cell phone provider there, at least it was when I left last year. I think Telus is starting to make an appearance though. Rogers does not work at all.
I'm living in Nova Scotia right now, and I found that groceries were no different aside from fruits and vegetables. As long as you shop at the Superstore. Super A is the other grocery store there, and is much more expensive, although I always found that their fruits and vegetables were always better quality. So if you price things out at both stores, usually you can shop for a decent cost. Walmart also has a grocery section there, so you can find some great deals there too.

Depending on where you live in the city you'd need a car. As well as where the school is that you'll be teaching at. If the school is in Downtown or Riverdale, I'd say no you don't need a car. The bus system is ok and alot of things are within walking/biking distance from those areas. If you taught/lived in another part of the city it would get difficult to travel around for basic necessities. Whitehorse is one of Canada's largest cities by land mass...and the subdivisions/schools are spread out over a very large area. Each subdivision has a name, and the streets are themed (In Riverdale, all the streets are named after rivers) so it gets easy to know your way around all the subdivisions.

Everyone always says the cost of living is more expensive, and in some ways it is. But there are so many other advantages to living in the territory, like there is only 5% tax and you do get isolation pay on your tax return. Also you can claim one trip outside the territory a year on your taxes because the government encourages people to not isolate themselves. To register your car, there is no safety or emissions test, its $45 a year for your registration. And I've never waited more than 20 minutes in the DMV. And if you lose your license its only $3 to replace. So there are a lot of things like that that I really miss because paying a little extra for groceries is so worth the simplicity of life.

Motorcycle rim or bicycle rim? you noted electric road bike and the ones I've seen locally are large bicycles. As a bicycle rim- the 28 inch is available for 2.25/2.50 wide tires and a Raleigh(?) rim width shows as use able for a 3 inch commercial tire. Trek has a 28 inch on the 'large' adult cruiser cycles and three wheelers. check Raleigh dealer for that size 'postal/police' rim meant for the hard users, commercial rough road users. 36 spokes needed about 10 gauge? 40 spokes?
Huffy has 'large' rim 28 inch also with 40 spokes. Motorcycle rims with 28 inch -- now your talking pre WW2 antiques like Excelsiors and early Indians.

What will happen to NASCAR when the air pollution activists get their way?

It is coming... the environmentalists are going after NASCAR, Formula One, Grand Prix, and drag racing because they use a lot of fossil fuels and pollute the environment... what will happen to the sport if they place restrictions on air flow and fuel use?
I know some of you have answered that it doesn't use enough fuel, but some will argue that it does use too much fuel compared to average cars, and the amount of air pollution put out is not restricted in any way at all right now...

First of all, race cars cause little to no pollution, even on petrolium gasoline with alot of lead in it. There is a simple scientific explanation for this. The emissions from vehicles, industrial facilities etc., are infact the chemical components that do not get completely burned off in the prossesses. Because racing engines are more powerful than the rest, (even though the milleage is much worse because of this) they actually have a much more complete burn of the fuel, & the more the horsepower, the more this is true. Infact, some levels of petrolium gasoline burning race engines in Drag Racing (like in Pro Stock & Pro Modified for example) actually achieve complete burn of the gas, thus leaving zero emissions from thier exhaust. The Canadian federal government banned racing gas back in the '90's, but that didn't last long because they were wrong, & now we are allowed to use the high-lead racing gas here again. However, many Drag Racers who race in classes that do not have much restriction on what type of fuel you can use, actually are now using ethanol or methanol (both are types of alcohol) for thier fuel because it is only half the cost of the racing gas, runs cooler (meaning the engine temperatures are lower), & makes more horsepower than the petrolium gasoline does. I have been told that the gas is more consistant for indexed & bracket racing, but many people are opting for the alcohol due to the gas prices. There are a few classes where the petrolium gasoline is still required. These are Stock, Super Stock, Pro Stock, & some (if not all) of the classes in the NSCA-style "Fast Street Car Drag Racing" scene. That's mainly because the cars on the public roads are still mostly using conventional (tho now mostly unleaded) gas & these classes have to maintain a certain amount of similarity to what the public are driving. NASCAR is the same way. As for the Indy Cars, they have never, ever been forced to use alcohol for fuel. They have been running on alcohol for several decades now, by thier own choice, for some of the same reasons that kind of fuel is popular in Drag Racing (except for cost, as alcohol fuel used to be twice the price of racing gas at one time). There are alcohol-only classes in Drag Racing that have been around for several decades too. Top Fuel Dragsters run on rocket propellant-based fuel, believe it or not. As for the enviromentalist going after NASCAR etc., some of thes enviromentalists don't really know that much about the enviroment, & they can't force anyone to do anything anyways. Racing's sanctioning bodies (NASCAR, IRL, F1, NHRA, IHRA, etc.) are the governing bodies in racing, & the politicians can have some effect ofcourse, but they need to please as many of thier people as they can. Ofcourse facts are fact, tho sometimes facts can be ignored. I worry a little, as you never know what can happen. I worry about the future of antique & classic cars too. Will people still be able to restore cars to original & still be able to enjoy them in the future? Only time will tell. These cars too could also run on ethanol or methanol. All they need to do is use different materials for gaskets & fuel lines than the original materials. This does not visually look too different from the original look. They could change the jetting in the carburetors to run better on the alcohol, which is internal & does not effect the original look. The fuel lines could have a coating on the outside to look original. Sorry to get a little off topic there. Also of note, I have a buddy up here in Canada that races in NEDRA (National Electric Drag Racing Association) down in the states. This is not a scale model racing group. These folks actually drive full-sized electric cars, electric bikes, & electric-powered dragsters, competing in electric-powered Drag Racing events! Some people would like to have an excuse to put a stop to motorsports, especially Drag Racing, any excuse, just because they happen to be predjudice, or don't understand. I consider these people to have a serious lack of morals & I consider it as serious as racism. That is how I honestly feel. There are some people who believe that Drag Racing is sort of like "the sleeping giant of the sports, entertainment, & hobby industries", & it would not surprse me if someday in the future Drag Racing becomes bigger than soccer throughout the world. Motorcycle rim or bicycle rim? you noted electric road bike and the ones I've seen locally are large bicycles. As a bicycle rim- the 28 inch is available for 2.25/2.50 wide tires and a Raleigh(?) rim width shows as use able for a 3 inch commercial tire. Trek has a 28 inch on the 'large' adult cruiser cycles and three wheelers. check Raleigh dealer for that size 'postal/police' rim meant for the hard users, commercial rough road users. 36 spokes needed about 10 gauge? 40 spokes?
Huffy has 'large' rim 28 inch also with 40 spokes. Motorcycle rims with 28 inch -- now your talking pre WW2 antiques like Excelsiors and early Indians.

What are my best options for alternative energy?

I'm looking to make it though a Canadian winter without paying my electric bill.
I only need to be able to power a laptop, my phone, and a lamp.
I'm looking for options under $200.
I've already thought about making a bike powered generator, and I'm also looking into the cost of a thermoelectric generator that runs off wood, but I'm still not sure what the best option might be...
Does anyone have any cheap but effective suggestions?

Well, under 200 dollars probably won't happen, sorry.

You can get a 600 watt wind turbine for under 500 dollars, but you'll also need some batteries, and the rest of the kit.

And in Canada, I'd worry about heat too.

I suppose if that's not an issue, you could rig up a mechanical generator from scratch, but that will take a fair bit of effort, and you'd probably want batteries to go with it.
