I am 230 lbs,and have ridden this bike 4K miles over 3 years and NO problems other than flat tires.

2.) How many miles can you typically travel on one without having to pedal? I have to pedal on this bike. I can go 30miles on this ebike designed in 2002 and costing $1300.

3.) When going up a steep hill, is the bike powerful enough to move upward without having to pedal at all?
Again, this ebike requires me to pedal, as you should on most ebikes. I have arthritis and asthma, but I can make it up a 7% hill at 7mph carrying 20lbs of groceries

Solar Panel wattage for my Electric Bike?
I am looking to purchase an Electric Bike for transport to work. I work on an Organic farm and need to save some energy up those hills.

I need help figuring out what size solar panels would be needed to charge the battery, and whether its plausible.

I'm looking at Ebay in Australia as I am immigrating down there. I prefer to afford the foldable/portable solar panel system: 80 watt, 120 watt, 160 watt, but IF necessary a bit more.

300w 3 PHASE 36v ELECTRIC REAR WHEEL
THREE 12v 17ah SLA BATTERIES (Total 36v)

or

Motor: 250 Watt brush-less DC hub
Batteries: 24V/10Ah pack, valve regulated

can anyone out there help explain to me how to figure this out?

hi guys i was curious about a few things and thought, "well i might as well ask", so here i am. lets say you dont finish your battery, are you still supposed to charge it every night? ar am i supposed ot let the battery drain out? and what type of brake should i have, the regular v brake or the disk? ive been told both ways so im not sure which one is better... last but not least, i was told that the company "Gold Model" was very good but not so known, but i was wondering is mabye someone knew if it is good and what are its bad sides? the more information the better:)

Batteries in an electric assist bike are similar to those in a cell phone. They will last a LOT longer if you drain them down to near zero & then recharge again.

For general purpose riding, disc brakes are NOT needed. Disc brakes are only needed under the most adverse conditions - such as mud, muck & a LOT of rain.

Good electric assist bicycles cost about 2K or more. For that same amount of money, you could buy 3 or more really good "fitness bikes".

I wouldn't own an electric assist bike. What happens if the battery should go down miles from home? You are stuck pedaling a VERY heavy bicycle home again. Meanwhile...a fitness bike or even a road bike is very light & geared to climb hills easily.

The higher end electric bikes get like 40 (perhaps more) miles with assistance. I figure, if you carry two of those (maybe one in the backpack), theres really nowhere the *average* person goes on a regular basis that wouldnt fall within an 80 mile round trip. Hills are way easier, and you wont get sweaty (if you get sweaty on a normal bike commute, that is)

There are things cars are very good at, transporting big items or multiple people, but for every day - mundane situations, do you think electric bikes could be a good alternative for most people who arent morbidly obese?

I personally think so! Its also a very green way to go about things.

Absolutely! Electric bikes are a great alternative to cars for people who wouldn't ordinarily ride a bicycle. They could replace a great deal of car traffic. A bike trailer or cargo bike/trike configuration helps address cargo needs.

Child trailer with an electric bike?

Q. Can you attach a child trailer to an electric bike? Or a scooter? I'm trying to find something for me and my son, who is four and 40 lbs, that will work with me. I have been walking the 3.5 miles for the last month and just want to find something that will cut down my time. I just think using a regular bike with a trailer will be too much and I will be stuck pushing the bike with the trailer up hills. I've also found child carriers, look very similar to car seats, that can be attached as well. Can those be used? They are actually on the bike, not trailing behind

Questions about electric bike?

Q. Hi, I just got this electric bike second hand on craigslist - and it's working fine, but I have a few questions about it.

1. Do you remove batteries when you have the bike on the public bike rack to prevent theft? Or do you think that the lock mechanism is good enough to deter the theft? Of course I put U-shape lock on the bike body itself, but I wasn't sure what to do with the battery. It's removable, so for today, (first time out), I removed the battery and brought it with me to the office.

2. how long does this battery last? The previous owner told me she used the bike for two years. How do you know the battery is no good any more? She used it to climb up a hill (gradual, a short steep part, but not so terrible) daily about 1.5 miles. When should I consider getting new battery pack (and how much does it cost?)

3. Is there way to adjust the positioning of the switch to turn the power on because it's in a little awkward place to reach as of right now. (I like to turn it on and off to save battery as I climb up the hill).

to the first responder: I live in upstate NY and the town is full of hills. I dare you to climb the two large hills I just went down and climbed this morning. I'm a middle aged woman with shaky knees and I'm not going to put up with your nonsense. Perhaps you should think about what you say before you post it - and save some embarrassment. to the second person: I want to turn it on and off because, if you've ever rode bike on a long hill, the incline is not even. Some parts are almost level, and I don't need the assist, but some other parts are steep, then I need assist.

I would remove the battery. The battery life is determined by the type and the number of recharge cycles. If you turn it off to climb hills why bother with an electric bike. There is a good chance that you already need a new battery. The cost will depend on the type, Google is your friend.

Q. What is stopping people from just replacing a gas engine with an electric engine. I know a little bit about cars but not enough to know this answer. What makes an engine go from 8000 rpm or so down back to like 1 or 2 thousand rpm when you shift gears. Could you do the same thing with an electric engine?
Where would i be able to look at find motors with the type of power a car would call for?

If you want the equivalent of a golf cart, there are companies that will make the conversion for you. It will cost you thousands of dollars and you won't be able to go from L.A. to Anaheim on a charge.

The biggest barrier is batteries.

Gasoline has an energy density of about 46.19 Newton-Meters per kilogram (energy units per unit of weight).

A lead acid battery (the cheapest kind) comes in at 0.11 NM/Kg. That means it takes more than 400 times as much lead-acid battery to get as much energy as the same weight of gas.

The next generation of battery, the nickel-metal-hydride (NMh) they use in most hybrids, has a better energy density, but it's still only twice as dense as a lead acid, or 200 times more weight for the same energy as gasoline. On an energy per cubic centimeter basis, it's a lot better, but still takes 100 times as much space per unit of energy.

The newest batteries, used in laptops and the all-electric Tesla sports car, are lithium-ion. An experimental Japanese sedan, the Eliica, with eight wheel motors and lithium-ion batteries ran 230 mph a few years ago, but it cost a fortune, and we haven't heard from it since. These batteries have an energy density by weight three times that of an NMh, and 5 times by volume. So gasoline is only18 times as dense by volume. Still, imagine having to find room for 18 gas tanks in your car!

As to gears, you need gears for mechanical advantage (like a lever) to allow the engine to remain in its most efficient operating range at varying speeds.

Most gas engines do their best work between about 2,400 rpms and 5,000 rpms. A high performance engine's range will be higher, but they all need gears, or else they either couldn't get going from rest (geared too high) or would run out of breath before they reached freeway speed (geared too low).

If you ever rode a ten-speed bike, you'll know that you need low gears for going up hills and high gears to keep up with the pedals going down. Same with a car.

the Tesla now has only one gear. That's because an electric motor produces its maximum torque (the force to move the car) at zero rpms (from a dead stop). If you want one, they are taking deposits. They only cost around $100,000.

BTW, if you want to avoid sounding uninformed, technically the electric unit is called a "motor" while the internal combustion one is called an "engine." It's an engineering distinction.

How old is the battery? Even if they are well cared for a motorcycle battery usually only lasts about 3 years. If the battery is more than 3 years old, maybe it's time for a new one.

Are you positive the battery has a full charge. Don't judge by the lights. They can deceive you.

A motorcycle battery in good condition will lose about 1% charge every day. It is also bad to let a motorcycle battery go below 50% charge. Letting the battery go below 50% charge and sulfation can happen. This is a condition where sulfur crystals from the sulfuric acid in the battery will form on the lead plates. When this happens the battery doesn't release the amount of energy it should and it will not accept a full charge like it should. They even make solar powered float chargers if a power source is not available.

Best to keep the battery fully charged in storage. If you intend to not use the bike for about 3 weeks or more connect a battery tender, sometimes called a float charger to the battery. This will maintain the battery at 100% charge without overcharging.

If you must use a battery charger charge at a rate of no more than 2 amps. Anything more than 2 amps will cause permanent damage to the battery.

Check the acid level in the battery. Motorcycle batteries are usually translucent with high and low acid level marks on the case. If needed, fill with distilled water only. Tap water contains minute amounts of minerals and chemicals that will harm your battery.

Make sure your battery terminal connections are clean and corrosion free. Clean with a wire brush. You can also use a mixture of baking soda and water.

Once you get the connections clean, put a little dielectric grease on the cable ends and terminals. This will prevent corrosion in the future.

You can buy a nice shop quality bike for the same price as a cheap electric bike. You will benefit from the exercise and be a lot healthier. Don't expect the batteries to last long on the cheap bikes so you end up with a 70 lb bicycle or ending up pedaling harder then a regular bike. Expect to buy a new battery pack every 6 months or so.

If you must use a battery charger charge at a rate of no more than 2 amps. Anything more than 2 amps will cause permanent damage to the battery.

Check the acid level in the battery. Motorcycle batteries are usually translucent with high and low acid level marks on the case. If needed, fill with distilled water only. Tap water contains minute amounts of minerals and chemicals that will harm your battery.

Make sure your battery terminal connections are clean and corrosion free. Clean with a wire brush. You can also use a mixture of baking soda and water.

Once you get the connections clean, put a little dielectric grease on the cable ends and terminals. This will prevent corrosion in the future.

I'm 19 and I have big legs i mean I'm skinny and everything and everyone loves my kegs but me. I've always had a issue w them.. Besides going to the gym or buying a electric bike or watever wat r other ways to tone or lose weight from my legs??

bikes are not good for legs, once you lose fat mass you increase muscle mass, mine are huge and I still hold my HS leg press record.

The best way to lose is to target muscles individually, do a lot of stretches. Also try endurance based activities.

Try and avoid hills while cycling or running and stay on the flats.

Swimming would be my best suggestion.

Will pairing two 36v electric wheel hub bikes together = 72v to go uphill?

If I pair two 36v electric wheel hub bikes together, with a frame of some sort, (a quad bike) will I get the equivalent of 72v to go uphill? These hills require 72v for electric bikes. Or will it be just two 36v bikes coming to a stop 1/4 the way up the hill? Is it like two batteries in parallel, or two batteries in Series??? Anybody?

or a bike generator (or is that the same as an alternator, im new at all this) im starting a project electric bike, and looking for ways to keep it running longer than the 3 or 4 hrs that it runs now...will this idea work or does anyone else have ant better ideas without breaking the bank.

It is simpler than that. If you go down hill the motor will generate and charge the battery. The problem is battery efficiency but if you use super capacitors instead of batteries you will be able to re-coupe some of your energy. With clever electronics you can get some power back when you brake but it is all a bit expensive. The simple bike is a really good mode of transport and has little room for improvement. I did assume you were not trying to invent a perpetual motion machine.
