Most folks I know that have owned the little 250 Ninjettes say that it will get up to 100mph on the freeway, but it might take a bit to get there.

They are easily good for 70-80mph, plus they get good mileage.

Great starter bike and a good commuter, too.

Gotta stow that ego, though. It is not a fast bike. A decent rider will still embarrass a squid on an R1 in the canyon.

A 500 will be a little faster, and the mileage will be a little worse. A 650 like Suzuki's SV or Kawi's Versys is approaching serious performance, and is about the biggest bike I would recommend for most beginners. I own a 1st gen SV, and while a 600 race replica is better on paper, the SV is a formidable machine, that is enough bike for most people who aren't thinking with their dicks.

Electric Scooter or a Mountain Bike?

I'm a soon-to-be community college attendee, and I can't decide whether to get a bike or electric scooter for basic transit in the hillish areas of Reno. I loved my bike back home, but it was pretty much destroyed by a reckless friend of mine after I let him borrow it (he's making a speedy recovery). I don't have near enough for a car yet, and my license is invalid since I just moved. I just need something reliable and good for short-medium range transit around town.

Why is your driver's license invalid? Anyway, you need a driver's license for a motor scooter. And anyway, a mountain bike isn't the best commuter bike, a road bike is. If you're going to be riding gravel trails as well consider a cyclocross bike. If you primarily mountain bike on rocky singletrack a mountain bike can still be a commuter but you'll never be as efficient on roads as you would on a road bike. Of course the bicycle, whichever kind you decide you need, is the most efficient and cheapest form of transportation.

Not only are you comparing apples to oranges. You're comparing apples to oranges to bananas!

A "commuter bike" will have no suspension parts. Suspension parts are needed only on off-road trails.

A mountain bike would make for a terrible commuter bike. The suspension parts weigh the bike down & absorb or zap part of your energy with every stroke of the pedals. Nice off-road. Terrible on the streets. The knobby tires also slow you down.

Electric bikes or electric assist bicycles are B-A-D for any situation. #1) The high initial cost. #2) The high replacement cost of a battery. #3) Makes you fat & lazy. #4) What if the charge in the battery runs low or out in the wrong place at the wrong time. Then YOU get stuck pedaling a VERY heavy bicycle home.

What is the BEST Commuter Bicycle?

A few weeks back I posted a question pertaining to Scooters (gas-powered) and found them in essence to be more trouble than they are worth especially so in terms of their legality from state to state so I decided to look into alternative transportation. I am now seriously considering human-powered (pedal or other) as well as electric bicycles as a less aggravating alternative to solve my transportation needs, Would someone please recommend some excellent human-powered as well as some excellent electric bikes (powerful but inconspicuous to authorities in regards to electric bikes.) Also would someone please tell me (from their own experience) how they feel about "Trikkes" I need something for commuting a short distance (two miles) to work but I'd also like the option to commute a little further comfortably if I need to, Thanks for your Input!

Look for a commuter bike or a hybrid from the local bike shop. For a trip of only two miles an electric bike is not needed. For much less then am electric bike you can get a shop quality bikes that will last 10 times longer. Stay away from Walmart and other department store bikes. A 2 mile trip on a bike should take you less then 10 min on a hybrid. You can also ride them on smooth dirt bike paths like rail trails.

Check out Trek, Specialized, Fuji, Giant, Raleigh, Cannondale, Jamis, Breezer, Schwinn, and a few others.

I am designing an electric bike for commuters to use day in, day out. I am asking you guys who live on the outskirts of cities to give me what you want in the perfect personal transport. I've been working on the same thing for different clients for years, but I'll tell you what things designers are trying to overcome:

1) Weight. The current technologies simply do not allow an e-bike that weighs under 50 pounds. A good target weight should be in the mid-20s;

2) Battery size. The size of even the smallest battery right now takes up precious space for carrying other stuff, and if the battery gets too small the range is reduced tremendously. Right now, Mitsubishi probably makes the best battery/motor combination;

3) Loaded range. Put a rider and 35 pounds of gear on the bike and ride it up a 5% grade, 1 mile long hill two or three times. Nuff said.

What is the solution to Seattle's traffic woes?

Seattle area commuters are looking at billions of dollars in costs to replace 520 and the Alaskan Way Viaduct. But these megaprojects don't even increase capacity. What do we do to unjam our clogged freeways? Your ideas?

1. Build a bridge or tunnel from the Seattle waterfront to the ferry terminal in Winslow.

2. Replace the Viaduct with a tunnel, which would be tied into the new bridge or tunnel to Winslow.

The technology for both projects exists today.

3. Starting in Everett, have a light rail line that when not on former railroad right of way... bike trails... would run down the center of I - 5. starting at the Everett Mall, to Alderwood Mall, Northgate Mall, utilize the downtown tunnel, stop at the Sports Arenas, South Center Mall, SeaTac Airport, SeaTac Mall,link with the Tacoma light Rail, Tacoma Mall, swing along the new Rt 16, over the new Tacoma Narrows Bridge, and stop along the way at major Park & Rides and the Kitsap Mall in Silverdale.

It could have Park & Ride lots built all along the rt.
By stopping at Malls, you have a ridership base almost instanly. These are existing major destinations with parking as well.

4. Build a light rail line along the entirety of I-405, runing a loop service in both directions, linking to the line being built now, and extend the currently built on to Auburn along 167, then tru an existing abandoned Electric Rail Interurban Tunnel, connect to the Tacoma Trolley and the Everett/Silverdale line.

5. Replace some ferry crossings to bridge or tunnel, such as Edmonds - Kingston and Southworth - Fauntleroy

The ferries are nice as a tourist thing but are really obsolete.
They are expensive, slow and infrequent.

I will be going to school at Stephen F. Austin next year and was wondering if I need a license to drive a gas powered scooter(like a vespa) on campus. I know they're allowed on the campus but I don't know if I have to have a license for one.

License and helmet in Texas. The alternative is electric bicycles pedal assist machine like the Schwinn Campus, and World. My commuter bicycle is the Schwinn Continental 30 volt battery pack really great to silently ride around. On the bike paths it embarrasses many high performance riders. Vespas Are not cheep any more and the two stroke motors are dirty running at least you still get some exercise with a bike.

NO - for at least 2 reasons. #1 the bike will be a lot heavier & possibly top-heavy. Note the position of the battery pack on the bikes listed below. #2 the charge in the battery always seems to run low or OUT in the wrong place at the wrong time. Then you are stuck pedaling a very heavy bicycle home under your own power. And #3 - the initial cost of $2,000 or more plus buying new batteries all the time.

Just learn to ride a regular bicycle. Make it a good "commuter" type bicycle. You'll be healthier & have a faster bicycle.

I am looking for a bicycle for a commute to work of about 8-10 miles and would consider an electric model. Can anyone offer any specific models? There is so much out there to choose from. The area where I live can be fairly hilly, so higher number of speeds would be best, and I'm wondering how often there would have to be battery replacement on an electric bike. Any help would be appreciated, preferably from personal experience, but speculation from an experienced rider would also help. Thanks.

i know that sounds really stupid, but here's my thing: i'm really considering biking to work (in college, full time job, gas is out of hand) but obviously there's the sweaty issue. do you bike commuters all work where there's a shower in the building? why are you this lucky? or do you stop at a gym? i could stop at mine, but it's another 2 miles (down and up a hill) from there to my work. wouldn't that just negate my showering efforts?

I am looking for a bicycle for a commute to work of about 8-10 miles and would consider an electric model. Can anyone offer any specific models? There is so much out there to choose from. The area where I live can be fairly hilly, so higher number of speeds would be best, and I'm wondering how often there would have to be battery replacement on an electric bike. Any help would be appreciated, preferably from personal experience, but speculation from an experienced rider would also help. Thanks.

And this bike may just come factory equipped with fenders & a rear rack for under $400! You will get & stay fit. Electric assist bicycles make you fat & lazy. What if the charge in the battery runs low or out at the wrong time & in the wrong place? Then you are faced pedaling an extremely heavy bike home under your own power. See these two links...

Electric bike laws in Massachusetts?

I am planning to buy an electric bike. I dont have a license and dont want one as i live near a commuter rail station. Massachuetts law says I need a license for an electric bike. But federal laws says
U. S. Congress passed Public Law 107-319 which exempts electric bikes under 750 watts and limited to 20 mph (with operating pedals) from the legal definition of a motor vehicle

So am i free to get an electric bike as long as i get a bike under the federal law specifcations?

what's your solution for the sweaty part of biking to work?

i know that sounds really stupid, but here's my thing: i'm really considering biking to work (in college, full time job, gas is out of hand) but obviously there's the sweaty issue. do you bike commuters all work where there's a shower in the building? why are you this lucky? or do you stop at a gym? i could stop at mine, but it's another 2 miles (down and up a hill) from there to my work. wouldn't that just negate my showering efforts?

500 watts = 1/2 horsepower.

Electric mobility scooters and wheelchairs have about 1/2 horsepower motors.
Many recreational and commuter scooters also have 1/2 horsepower motors.

It's about gearing. You could easily use a 1/10 horsepower motor if you geared it to run a couple of miles per hour.
