Will electric cars ever become realistic in the U.S.?

Take a look at these on the link below. They are all either way too expensive for most people to own or they don't have practical speeds and ranges. Are manufacturers just paying lip service or do you think they will soon become a viable alternative?
We've had the technology for over 40 years alternative transportation but we just never seem to get quite there. Always "just around the corner."

I saw the "Who killed the electric car" film. That's what I mean. Promises are made, folks find out that its all lies, and then the cycle starts again. We've been talking about this for decades.
I'll believe it when I see it. What's to keep those same folks who "killed the electric car" from just doing it again?
Just because the supporting technology exists doesn't necessarily mean that a product will appear on a mass scale. There has to be a political and economic will.

Yes, in fact some already are.

For example, the Green Vehicles Triac and Aptera 2e are examples of affordable ($20-30k) highway-speed electric cars with roughly 100 mile per charge range available within the next few months. There are a number of such cars which will be coming on the market within the next year or two (see link below).

There are also electric mopeds and motorcycles like the Vectrix. I've got an electric moped that can go 50 mph and 30 miles per charge, which I bought for $3600 and use to commute to work every day (except when I bike).

There will also be range-extended electric vehicles, which will be able to plug-in and go about 40 miles on pure electric power, then switch to hybrid mode. The most famous one is the Chevy Volt, expected to come out in late 2010.

The TTC provides more than 450 million passenger rides each year. Each work day, an average of 1.5 million people ride the system which results in 1 million fewer trips by car. Fewer vehicles on the road equals less greenhouse gas emissions. The City plans to complete a bikeway network to make it easier to get around by both bicycle and transit. The TTC will be putting bike racks on all buses by 2010 and is investigating the use of secure bicycle storage by subway stations. All bus purchases are planned to be diesel/electric hybrids. In 2007, the TTC operated 150 diesel/electric hybrid buses with 410 more to be added to the fleet in 2008, resulting in one third of the fleet being hybrids. By 2010, 45% of the fleet will be hybrids. Fuel efficiency is achieved through vehicle design, right-sizing, and by optimizing motor size. Operator training and operating procedures contribute to fuel efficiency as well. These principles apply to buses, streetcars, trains and non-revenue vehicles. Many vehicle improvements are included in the designs for both the New Subway Train (called the Toronto Rocket) and the New Low Floor Light Rail Vehicle to reduce energy consumption and to make the vehicles more environmentally sustainable. Automatic Train Operation is included in the design for the Toronto Rocket, which will improve energy efficiency. How do i drain my fuel tank?

Hi all, I need to drain my fuel tank, its off a 2010 hyosung gt250r efi model. How do I do it?

When I disconnected the fuel line some fuel came out if the fuel hose but none from the tank, as there is some sort if lock that opens when the fuel line is connected (so I was told by a friend)

Does anyone know how I empty it?
And also how would I wash it out? there is a lot if crap in the tank.

Take the tank off the bike (not too hard with simple tools), turn it over and dump out the fuel!

Since it has EFI it has an electric fuel pump in the tank that does not allow the gas to come out like an older bike with a carb. You can take the fuel hose off and turn the key on and it should pump the gas out but then again some don't.

I would like to know the real comparison between a high mileage gasoline car and an electric or hybrid car.

It would include the cost and environmental impact of manufacturing exotic batteries and rare earth materials for the magnets in the motors. and the costs of the charger and electricity to recharge.
AND don't forget a sinking fund to pay for the crushing cost of replacing the battery pack every so often (they always conveniently forget this one)

What is a "real" number may depend upon what you want to consider. In an effort to increase the apparent mileage some of the volt advertising only counted the actual gasoline used and not the energy in any electrical charge. This is how they made the "outrageous" claim of 230 miles per gallon. They have since backed off this number and the marketing attempt is not to their credit. More recently they are claiming around 70 to 100+ miles to a gallon. While this is more reasonable and some test drives have determined that they were getting a combined gasoline/electric "mileage equivalency" of around 90mpg, the credit goes to the electric motor and not the petrol engine.

Tesla had calculated their electric drive train at over 6 times more efficient than a petrol engine.1 We say that a petrol engine is around 15% efficient but just starting out, standing in traffic or even in stop and go traffic it would probably be fortunate to achieve this. "Fuel efficient" cars are using the same tricks that an electric vehicle uses to extend its range: lighter vehicles, better aerodynamics, and less rolling resistance. What the gas vehicle does or cannot have is the more efficient drive train or regenerative braking.

So given the efficiency differences of the drive train if the average petrol vehicle gets around 20 mpg then the "average" electric vehicle should get about 6 times this or about 120 MPGe. Present electric vehicles are doing better than this.2

There are a number of ways to consider the cost of the battery pack. I would argue that you should not include it for the initial life of the original pack. When you buy a new electric car, you are paying for the battery pack. It depreciates until its useful life is gone in about 8 to 10 years. Both the Leaf and the Volt are warranty their packs for 8 years. To amortize the cost of a new pack over the initial miles is to consider the cost twice. Although you are asking for an analysis of battery chemistry's and motors these vary widely. The AC motor does not use rare earth magnets, there are many different battery chemistry's and technology is advancing rapidly. Ultracapacitors are already being used in some buses (4) as a means for energy storage and it is likely that they will increasingly be combined with some battery chemistry to produce a composite energy storage system.5 Such an extensive analysis would have to be compared to refinery pollution, transportation pollution, the overwhelming "oil spill" from improperly disposed of drain oil, gas station and highway run off each year.6

What kind of dirt bike should I get? I want something faster and more powerful.?

I'm 14 and have been riding for about 6 years. Im about 6 feet tall and about 200 or so pounds, im still growing.I really want to get something faster. Currently I have a Honda 150 that is custom made it is boarded out to about a 200 and has enough torque to do a no clutch wheely in second gear and a small wheely in 3rd. I want about the same amount of torque with a lot more speed, any suggestions?

Look at the crf250r or the crf250x. The 'r' being the mx race bike and the 'x' more of an enduro/trail bike but still with a lot more power than the basic trail bikes. The 'x' has things like larger fuel tank, electric start and is geared for enduro style riding. If you want the mx version just avoid the 2004 model as that was the first year of production and they had issues with valves and also the 2010 model as that was the first of the fuel injected models and they came with wiring loom issues and a few other small problems.

After realizing that building an ultra light weight aircraft would require time that i didn't care to spend, I decided it was maybe time to be a little more realistic. So I am now in the process of building an electric motorcycle, in the design of the "light Cycle" from the Tron movies. I've built the frame and have all the electronics.. buuut I haven't the slightest idea how to design the outer shell.

Sheet metal sounds ideal, but it DOES NOT like to be bent in multiple directions. I need a material that can be shaped without the need for an English-wheel or any other crazy machinery. Just keep in mind that it does not have to be hard or reliable, it's going to be more like a trophy than an actual drivable bike.

Oh and with this economy, lets keep the prices reasonable, okay?

As you are building a one-off I would recommend using the fiberglass over foam method. You carve a 3d mock up from conventional insulation foam and then laminate both sides with fiberglass. Then apply a little bondo then a gel coat over it. Unlike with carbon fiber or kevlar fiberglass does not require a pressurized mold, or any mold, and can be laid by hand. this works with any shape including compound curves. If touching resin doesn't appeal to you you might invest in a compressed air powered chopper gun. fiberglass over foam is by far the cheapest method, for something small like a motorcycle you probably wont spend more the 500 bucks for all the materials.
This is how most low budget movie props are made.

-- Regenerative suspension (shock absorbers that produce electricity)

It might be possible to park your vehicle at the top of a mountain each night. As you drive down the mountain the regenerative braking could charge the vehicle. However you would have to top off the charge before you climb the mountain again. As they say there is no free lunch.

--A stationary Wind Generator is just one method to produce electricity that can then be used to power the electric grid or an electric car directly.

In 2007, the TTC operated 150 diesel/electric hybrid buses with 410 more to be added to the fleet in 2008, resulting in one third of the fleet being hybrids. By 2010, 45% of the fleet will be hybrids. Fuel efficiency is achieved through vehicle design, right-sizing, and by optimizing motor size. Operator training and operating procedures contribute to fuel efficiency as well. These principles apply to buses, streetcars, trains and non-revenue vehicles. Many vehicle improvements are included in the designs for both the New Subway Train (called the Toronto Rocket) and the New Low Floor Light Rail Vehicle to reduce energy consumption and to make the vehicles more environmentally sustainable. How do i drain my fuel tank?

Hi all, I need to drain my fuel tank, its off a 2010 hyosung gt250r efi model. How do I do it?

When I disconnected the fuel line some fuel came out if the fuel hose but none from the tank, as there is some sort if lock that opens when the fuel line is connected (so I was told by a friend)

Does anyone know how I empty it?
And also how would I wash it out? there is a lot if crap in the tank.

Take the tank off the bike (not too hard with simple tools), turn it over and dump out the fuel!

Since it has EFI it has an electric fuel pump in the tank that does not allow the gas to come out like an older bike with a carb. You can take the fuel hose off and turn the key on and it should pump the gas out but then again some don't.

Assuming I have a plugin port in my parking area but the parking is NOT secured parking, meaning anyone can walk up to the car, how will I be able to use plugin vehicles? What stops someone from walking up and A) unplugging the car B) stealing the plug C) cutting the cord? Do I need a secure parking lot and/or a garage?

You might ask the same thing about a motorcycle parked in the same lot. Easily someone with a front end loader or a crane could take the bike. The same is true for someone smashing your vehicle windows or taking it with a tow truck. You may not consider these likely events in your neighborhood, or you may... Your sense of security is based upon how likely you foresee the unfortunate concern. Much of this is an assessment of neighborhood rather than the potential with the vehicle.

The same is true for an electric vehicle. Is it possible? Yes. And of 365 days in a year how many times might this happen? Probably less than you might imagine.

I would be more concerned with the possibility of someone accidentally cutting or tripping over the cord. There are several possible ways to work around this:

1. The cord could be armored just as there is armored but somewhat flexible electrical cable called "bx" which is used for electrical wiring.

2. The lid of the charging port could be configured to close and lock over the plug or some aftermarket device could be applied to lock in the cord.

3. The charging circuit could be alarmed with either a silent (app?) or audible alarm to warn when an incomplete charge has been interrupted or cord disturbed. Some cars have perimeter alarms on them.

4. The system for charging could be switched to a wireless charger. This is essentially a pad you could drive over that would then charge your vehicle wirelessly. AND don't forget a sinking fund to pay for the crushing cost of replacing the battery pack every so often (they always conveniently forget this one)

What is a "real" number may depend upon what you want to consider. In an effort to increase the apparent mileage some of the volt advertising only counted the actual gasoline used and not the energy in any electrical charge. This is how they made the "outrageous" claim of 230 miles per gallon. They have since backed off this number and the marketing attempt is not to their credit. More recently they are claiming around 70 to 100+ miles to a gallon. While this is more reasonable and some test drives have determined that they were getting a combined gasoline/electric "mileage equivalency" of around 90mpg, the credit goes to the electric motor and not the petrol engine.

Tesla had calculated their electric drive train at over 6 times more efficient than a petrol engine.1 We say that a petrol engine is around 15% efficient but just starting out, standing in traffic or even in stop and go traffic it would probably be fortunate to achieve this. "Fuel efficient" cars are using the same tricks that an electric vehicle uses to extend its range: lighter vehicles, better aerodynamics, and less rolling resistance. What the gas vehicle does or cannot have is the more efficient drive train or regenerative braking.

So given the efficiency differences of the drive train if the average petrol vehicle gets around 20 mpg then the "average" electric vehicle should get about 6 times this or about 120 MPGe. Present electric vehicles are doing better than this.2

There are a number of ways to consider the cost of the battery pack. I would argue that you should not include it for the initial life of the original pack. When you buy a new electric car, you are paying for the battery pack. It depreciates until its useful life is gone in about 8 to 10 years. Both the Leaf and the Volt are warranty their packs for 8 years. To amortize the cost of a new pack over the initial miles is to consider the cost twice. I've only heard of a few, but how many are there really? What's your take on each one of them, from best to worst? I'm in the market for one in 1 year or so...

I hope it's not a pain to be remembering to charge/re-charge. It's all too new to me...

There are several battery electric motorcycles (Lightning.) And there are several companies that offer three wheeled battery electric vehicles that are registered as motorcycles, (Zap.) Other offerings that are expected to reach market within the next year include the B6, IMiev, aptera, think city and quite a few others.
