Would this be legal on uk roads/paths?

Hey, im wondering if this electric bicycle would be legal on UK's roads and paths?
http://stealthelectricbikesunitedkingdom.com/the-bikes.html
Top speed: 30mph or 50mph depending on which bike

Answer
Both are illegal for use on public roads and paths. An electric bike must be limited to 15 mph under power, although there is nothing to stop you peddling it (or free wheeling down hill) faster if you can. It also can not exceed 200w, the one you have linked to is 750w.
You must also be over 14 years old to ride one.

Yamaha MT-03 and Kawasaki Eliminator 250 - Electric problems?

ChiosNic

My partner is looking to buy either of these two bikes. Living on a Greek island he is concerned whether they have a reputation for problems with the electrics. We have an excellent mechanic nearby for 'nuts and bolts' problems but anything more 'technical' might be difficult.

Hands on experience with either greatly appreciated.

Thank you.
To MT03 BEN

Thanks for all the info. Its not goats we have to worry about in the village, its the wrinklies who are not expecting anything faster than a donkey and just cross the road anywhere!

Answer
Hi
I have an mt-03 great bike load of fun to throw about!
The problem is like most new bikes the MT has an ecu chip which does require a Yamaha dealer with a laptop/software to reset certain things like immoblisers etc.if they go wrong and since they are built in italy they can go wrong!
The engine is bullet proof as it's been around a longtime made by morini of italy.the valves need checking at 8000miles,oil filter needs changing at 600miles and every 4000miles after that or once a year,
also it's fuel injected not carb.
Electrics are simple really no different from any other bike, the odd fuse can go but easy to change.
but the things your partner should really think about is the tyres;
As they are 'road' tyres not meant for any kind of sand/grit or bad surfaces.... u'll slide off when the firstime a goat/donkey comes out of somewhere unexpectedly!
Then there's the warranty (2yrs) you get and "we" mt owners have had problems with the clocks and paint finish on the oiltank at the front/bottom of the bike and if it's not serviced by a yam dealer they can void your warranty (if your buying from new).
any way it's a gr8 bike have a look at the mtownersclub in the uk or if your greek i think they have 1 to.

thank you

Answer
I would suggest MR CANADA IMPORTS - www.mrcanadaimports.com, they are a distributor and wholesaler of brand name model electric e-bikes, Mountain Electric Cycle, Folding Electric Bike, and city e-bike versions, including a popular model for use is the stb-mountain bike "Series E03, E01, F02 older clients" < very good seller for us.

No matter if your located in USA or CANADA or UK, i would contact these guys, these models are unlike regular store brand electric bikes, as you will see when you see them, they feature 36V 10Ah Li-ion battery as you requested and much more.. The Emode time is the best on the market, highest electric mileage then any other model currently sold.

These have helped our sales for this coming season since we have sold-out
all our first stock via pre-orders. If i was you i would order some samples now, display in your store and base your orders on the demand of that model.

good luck on your ventures..
you might want to provide free replacement tires with each purchase to obtain those sales, this is what we offer with the puncture resistant K-shield tires in 3 of our stores, and the response has been very good :)
the wait time including delivery for us was an average of 45 days for 460 units.

contact: Jon Steveson, jon.steveson@mrcanadaimportsDOTcom

if you require good service, these are the guys to contact, and come Christmas you'll really enjoy their services and free gifts :) please tell jon, you spoke with me about their products, and your a close business partner of mine. He will do the rest. good luck again, RIDE HARD!!! WELL NOT REALLY ITS ELECTRIC! lol

Can anyone recommend an electric mini-bike?

DarkSerge5

I am newly interested in small recreational motor vehicles and am interested in purchasing a beginning minibike. I was looking at the Serengeti Badger 450, and wanted to try and find other bikes like it. Problem is, that seems to be the only electric one I came across with that look. Can anyone recommend to me any electric minibikes similar to the Badger and within the same price range?

Answer
Yamaha do an effective ( it works) electric bicycle, but it is pricy, however, it works and here in the UK it is being purchased.
Everything depends on the battery technology, which has a way to go yet.

I would wait about 5 years myself, then they could get good. Meantime, look at the Dutch diesel bikes this may be a better way to go

Has anyone ever come across electric bikes and mopeds? I have seen more and more people around with electric bikes and I saw that a few of my friends have got electric mopeds, £700!! what a bargain!!!? i was recommended this website... tell me what you think ?

www.2wheelelectric.co.uk
Well these bikes are my dads and they are fantastic! they sold out within the first week of import and a pre-order basis has half sold out the next container

Answer
I have an electric bike (my second). You need to buy quality in order to get reliability. Two reliable manufacturers are Giant (the most popular brand in Japan), and Schwinn. These bikes are not cheap.

Electric bike, permits, anything?

Justin

I have an electric bike and im wondering if i need any permits, papers, licenses, anything to operate, use, or drive this type of transportation around?

Answer
In the UK, there are requirements they must meet in order to be road legal:

Check out: http://www.powacycle.co.uk/Are-electric-bikes-legal.asp

The main thing is the pedals, as it would be classed as a bicycle. An electric bike without them, would be illegal to ride on a public road, without number plates, tax, insurance, type approval and proper lights.

I'd at least wear a cycle helmet, plus reflective clothing and bike lights (if not already fitted).

Depends on local, state and federal laws in the US, ask your local DMV.

What is the lifespan of an electric bike?

archa_pyus

Say you have an electric bicycle that is used daily, capable of a 30 mile range before needing re-fuelling and a speed range of 3-15mph.

What would be its likely lifespan, i.e. when would the whole thing have to be replaced?

I do not need exact measurements, just the general idea, as it is for a project for which i have to design an electric bike, which i know nothing about.

thank you!

Answer
The life span of an electric bike is mostly determined by the battery. Batteries can have a memory and if recharged before depleting it completely will reduce the capacity and can affect the range.

I would do some research on batteries. You can also look up motorized hubs to put on bikes, they make for the cleanest design.

Motors are rated in watts and most states have regulations that control the maximum amount of power that you can use.

How much would it cost to get a moped?

Richiboi

I'm 16, live in the UK and want to get a moped. How much would this cost?

So far I've found four main costs

1)The Moped itself
2)Driving lessons/test
3)Helmet and gloves
4)Insurance

Can anyone give me some average prices for these things?

Answer
In the U.K the best price to get yourself a descent moped (50cc) is around £650!

My CBT (Moped Training) took one day from 9am untill 3pm and it cost me £120 but the prices range from roughly £90 to £130... The test is very easy though, provided you do it on a automatic and not a manual!

Helmet will cost you £50 but i dont know anyone who wears motorcycle gloves on a moped cause it looks kind of cheesy, you know wearing a motorcycle costume on a little scooter!

Insurance costs me £28 a month on third party (the cover only the other driver and not you) and fully comp was about £60... The cheapest third party insurance company for me was motorcycles direct.

Also when you buy your bike do a few checks:
>If its liquid cooled, take the cap off the coolant tank and smell it; if it smells like exhaust fumes, the gasket is gone
>Check the frame numbers, on my bike its on the bottom right hand side under the foot rests; and if the frame numbers looks welded in any way and not properly indented in there, the bike is most probably a ringer
>Check the electrics for example the electric start, indicators, lights etc.
>And if the suspension appears to be leaking oil then do not buy unless they are upright forks and u can get the fork seals changed

I need a list of required components (preferably cheaplyl sourced) and tools required. Also any changes that will need to be made to the bike and the motor used. I'm a fast learner and want to try it but I have no technical knowledge. I want a pollution free transport method but I can't afford to buy an expensive new one (cost over GBP500!). Based in UK.

Answer
You can purchase a kit for about $200 with everything you need included. Including wheels if you ened them - with 16" through 26" wheels.

Kit includes self-contained removable power unit, mounting rack, and mounting hardware. The power unit is designed for easy installation and removal so the bicycle that it is attached to can be ridden as an electric bicycle with the power unit installed, or ridden as a regular bicycle with the power unit removed.

Powered by two fresh Universal Power Group® SLA batteries with a 12 month manufacturers warranty.

What type of cables do I use to connect 4 12volt batteries to my electric bike?

Q. Hi. I'm trying to connect four 12-volt batteries together (I think they're supposed to run parallel), so that I can power a 48volt, 500watt motor.
I'm not very electronically/mechanically minded....so I'm not sure what exactly to use to connect these batteries. Would some type of clamps work? The batteries have little prong ends, not the kind like car batteries with the hole ends for big screws.

Thank you for your help!

Answer
For a 48 volt motor, you will need to connect the batteries in series. + on one to - on the next one and so on (see series drawing here):

http://www.electricfence-online.co.uk/shop/renewable-energy/renewable-energy-advice-faqs/battery-bank-wiring.html

You will need heavy gauge (10 ga or larger) battery type wire with ring or spade lugs for attaching to the posts:

Answer
It's a bit tricky. I'm no expert by any means, but I know that an ordinary assisted electric bike which does away with the need for pedalling and doesn't go very fast is quite legal. However some forms of powered transport are not legal for use on anything other than private land, like segways (shame, cos I'd love one!) , motorized foot scooters, and I know the speed can make a difference. That is actually going to be the biggest hurdle - whether something is legal to use on the road or not. Maybe checking out the DVLA website might help.
